Car Maintenance

Choosing the right filter for your vehicle In today’s economy it’s more important than ever to take care of your vehicle. Engine maintenance is critical when extending the life of your vehicle. There is a lot of information available about the differences in oils and other maintenance components, but what no one explains is what to look for in an oil filter. The oil filter serves as the lifeblood for your engine. It is important because it cleans the oil and is capable of filtering high volumes of oil with relatively low restriction. How do you know which filter to choose and what are the differences between styles? Royal Purple has provided the following inCourtesy of ARAContent formation to help you decide. Advanced micro-glass oil filters are designed to extend the life of vehicles and equipment.

Filter components The shell is the outside casing you see when the filter is installed. It keeps your filter safe during the wear and tear on your vehicle, and protects it from punctures. The media is the filtering component. Depending on the level of filter you chose, media can be described as a maze of cellulose, synthetics and/or microfibers that remove the harmful debris from your engine oil. The core is the part of the filter that helps the filter keep its shape and prevents it from collapsing under extreme pressure. It is inserted inside of the filter media and can be made of a variety of materials. The base plate is the threaded component of the oil filter. In addition to providing the threaded attachment for the filter, it directs the oil flow through the filter. The gasket is the rubber ring that seals the filter to the engine’s oil filter base. This gasket is typically made of flexible rubber.

The oil filter serves as the lifeblood for your engine. It is important because it cleans the oil and is capable of filtering high volumes of oil with relatively low restriction.

Key differences Now that you understand the components of an oil filter, it’s easy to see that not all oil filters are the same. There are some key differences in the quality of oil filter you are purchasing. Most “economy” filters are very basic and last for a limited time in comparison to the higher end filters. These filters use media of natural wood fibers to sort out the debris in your oil. The “better” filter contains media that is a blend of fibers. The majority of the fibers are cellulose with a minimal blend of synthetic fibers that enhance the media strength and efficiency performance. The “best” or premium level of filters - such as the new Royal Purple oil filters use micro-glass filter technology. Advanced microglass oil filters are designed to extend the life of vehicles and equipment. In addition to superior filtration media, the other internal and structural components are of higher quality materials, making for easier installation and removal as they are much less prone to crush while installing or removing. Royal Purple oil filters can extend change intervals up to 12,000 miles. Vehicles still under warranty should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended filter change intervals. —Courtesy of ARAContent

Mock-up 1.4 liter engines are displayed next to a Chevrolet Volt at the Flint Engine plant in Flint, Mich. General Motors announced a $163.2-million investment in its operations that will begin production of the Volt and Cruze engines at the plant in early 2011.

Investing in small cars $ 159/MO. FOR 39

As fuel economy standards creep closer, automakers think smaller. ■

By DEE-ANN DURBIN AP Auto Writer

LANSING, Mich. — U.S. automakers are thinking small. They’re investing in small cars by adding compacts to their lineups, overhauling factories and hiring workers as they prepare for government regulations due in 2016 that will require cars to go farther on a tank of gas. Even though U.S. small car sales have dropped lately, hurt by steadier gas prices that followed a huge runup two years ago, automakers don’t want to be caught without compacts when the new fuel standards arrive. On Thursday, General Motors Co. said it will add a new small car to its Cadillac lineup, the same day Chrysler Group LLC said it would invest $600 million in plant geared for small cars. GM plans to spend $190 million to upgrade its Lansing Grand River plant to build the car, and will add 600 jobs to the plant’s work force of 1,100. It didn’t name the car or say when it will go on sale. Chrysler will upgrade its Belvidere, Ill., assembly plant to build new cars starting in 2012. Chrysler didn’t say which cars will be built there, but at least one of them will likely be a small car to replace the Dodge Caliber, which is currently built at the site. The investment won’t create new jobs, but the company will retain the 2,349 jobs currently at the assembly plant and a nearby parts stamping plant. Those announcements were only the latest in the small car investment boom, which has also been encouraged by agreements to cut wages at some smallcar plants.

Small car boom Earlier this month, GM said it will start producing two new small cars — a revamped Chevrolet Aveo and the new Buick Verano — at a now-shuttered plant in

“Regardless of what people want to buy, this is what they’re going to have to buy. There’s a wholesale shift in mindset that’s going to have to happen.” Aaron bragman IHS Automotive

Orion Township, Mich. And Ford Motor Co. is spending $950 million to transform a Michigan truck plant into a factory that will make the Ford Focus. Ironically, U.S. small car sales have been anemic this year, overshadowed by bigger gains in the truck and sport utility segments. Small car sales were up 7.3 percent through September, compared to a 10.3 percent increase in overall sales, according to Autodata Corp. Large pickup sales were up 18.7 percent. Aaron Bragman, an analyst with IHS Automotive, said people tend to buy smaller cars when gas prices are seeing wild fluctuations, as they did in 2008. But since gas prices have stabilized this year, people have gravitated toward larger vehicles. As new fuel economy standards creep closer, however, automakers will have to get buyers to think smaller. Cars, pickups and SUVs will need to meet a new average of 35.5 mpg by 2016, up from 27.5 mpg today, and the government is developing plans for future vehicle models that could push the standards to between 47 mpg and 62 mpg by 2025. Bragman said the downsizing of cars, SUVs and trucks will be a necessity to meet those standards. “Regardless of what people want to buy, this is what they’re going to have to buy,” Bragman said. “There’s a wholesale shift in mindset that’s going to have to happen.” People worried they’ll have to trade comfort and style for fuel economy should consider how some small cars have changed. went on sale in the U.S. in 2002, proved to U.S. consumers that small cars didn’t have to be cheap and stripped of amenities, Bragman said. That car was made by Germany’s BMW AG, however. Now Detroit wants in on the high-end small car market. The new Ford Fiesta subcompact has options like heated leather seats, a moonroof and a hands-free entertainment system. The new Cadillac small car will be a sporty, rear-wheeldrive car that will compete head-on with the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series, said GM CEO Dan Akerson. “We’ve ceded this segment of the market to our foreign competitors for too long,” Akerson said. Another reason for the small-car investments is new labor agreements that make it profitable for automakers to build small cars at their U.S. plants. GM will be the only car company making a subcompact in the U.S. when it starts producing the Aveo in Lake Orion next year. The company said it can build the car profitably because of a new labor agreement that lowers the wages of 40 percent of the plant’s workers. United Auto Workers President Bob King said the Lansing Grand River plant, which will produce the new small Cadillac, won’t be cutting current workers’ pay. But any new hires at the plant will get about half that pay, or $15 an hour. “We know it’s pretty hard to support a family and everything on a $15 an hour wage, but we also know that we have to keep General Motors and Ford and Chrysler competitive,” King says.

Car buyers likely to find big deals DETROIT — If you’re holding out for a bargain on a car, you could be rewarded this month. Automakers are more likely to offer promotions on certain makes and models — particularly luxury cars, SUVs and trucks — to clear out their older models and improve their year-end numbers. Overall, the auto industry remains cautious about generous rebates and lowcost loans to lure customers. Newly lean and profitable carmakers don’t want to erode the bottom line by offering too many sweet deals that cut into profit margins. But as the end of the year approaches, some shoppers, including many Toyota buyers, could find bargains. Even a disciplined industry can’t resist end-of-theyear sales. So far this year, auto sales have held fairly steady, at a level well below what was considered normal before the recession. The automakers held back on rebates in July and August, which are typically big months for promotions, and results were mixed. July sales were slight-

ly better than a year earlier. August sales were the worst since 1983. Americans are still unsure about the economy, and hesitant to make a large purchase like buying a new car unless they absolutely need to or the deal is too good to pass up, says Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at consumer web site Edmunds.com. “People are on the sidelines waiting for that deal message to come,” she says. “When they hear it, generally during the holiday season, they might start buying again.” In general, automakers offered more incentives this October than last — about $2,800 per car, a 6 percent increase, according to the car price information service TrueCar. Final estimates won’t be available until Wednesday, when carmakers report U.S. auto sales for last month. Many automakers kept incentives flat, while others, such as Honda and Toyota, piled on the rebates. Honda’s incentives were double last year’s, and Toyota’s were up 50 percent. — Associated Press

2011 Toyota Sienna Minivan

Family utility vehicle moves on up To t h ose o f yo u wh o thought the minivan — a family shuttle that carries kids, hockey equipment, youthful soccer teams and diaper pails around the block or around the country — was dead, recent figures tell a different story. According to current statistics, minivan sales, which peaked in 2000 at 1.4 million and to 434,000 last year, have climbed to more than 600,000 vehicles sold in 2010. Among those box-shaped passenger vans enjoying the niche’s renaissance is the new 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan that sold 9920 units in September, 2010 compared to 6442 a year earlier — an increase of 54 percent. And projections for 2011 are as optimistic as the soccer moms and hockey moms who often drive them. Combines Luxury and Function The utility-oriented family van is a living room on wheels, and the Sienna LE version combines luxury with function and convenience, priced aggressively and packaged in upscale versions that appeal to those who want more than efficiency in their family movers. Toyota, which arguably put out the first minivan — the Toyota Van hit the market in 1984, several months before Chrysler coined the term “minivan” — replaced its small Previa with equally small Sienna in 1997 and redesigned the vehicle in 2004 making it larger to compete with its heftier competitors. This third-generation Sienna, manufactured in Princeton, Indiana, is currently the only minivan in its class to offer all-wheel-drive.

Fresh sporty look Offered in five trim levels, the new SE offers fresh bodywork, 19-inch wheels and a sportier ride. On another note, Toyota is the first

automaker to offer a factory-installed auto-access seat for disabled people. The one-touch rotating, power ascending/descending liftup seat can lower to within 19 inches of the ground. Available in 7- and 8-passenger configurations, my test Sienna LE was in 7-passenger mode and measured 200.2 inches long, 78.2 inches wide and 68.9 inches high on a 119.3-inch wheelbase, with 6.5 inches of ground clearance. Weighing in at 4310 lbs., Sienna has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. Outside, there is a certain sportiness to the otherwise buslike bread box personality we associate with slabsided minivans. The front grille and stance offer contemporary fluidity. Hidden tracks for the sliding doors, a hidden rear wiper and exterior detailing offer enough curvature to provide a look of motion. The demeanor still says minivan, but it says it in a contoured, newschool way, accented by color-keyed heated power outside mirrors, color-keyed bumpers, door handles and body side moldings, privacy glass, integrated colorkeyed rear spoiler with center high-mount stop lamp and concealed intermittent rear window wiper.

V-6 power Under the sculpted hood the all-wheel-drive LE powered up with an optional 3.5liter V-6 that produces 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque. Toyota also offers a 187hp/186 lbs-ft of torque, 2.7liter four-cylinder mated to a six-speed automatic that

returns 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, but could be underpowered for this application. The 3.5-liter is EPA rated 18/24 mpg with a 20-gallon tank, and a week of mixeduse tests produced an average of 19.7mpg for my test ride. Sienna’s TDI ignition and EFI fuel system provides the efficiency. The V-6 showed good acceleration on the track, sprinting from zero to 60mph in a surprising 8 seconds flat, while navigating a quarter-mile in 16 seconds. Pick-up at speed on the highway is generous despite some wheel over-rev, and while the ride is firm, the electric power steering responds heavily and cornering displays apparent but easily controllable body roll, a bit of top-wobble and some understeer. Independent McPherson struts up front with stabilizer bar, and a torsion beam rear suspension with a stabilizer bar, plus four-wheel anti-lock brake system with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution demonstrate a comfortable, secure experience for driver and those onboard.

Family room spacious The seven-passenger lounge-seating interior measures a family-room spacious 41 inches of front headroom (39.1 with a moonroof), 39.7 inches in the middle and 38.3 inches in the rear. Legroom is a comfortable 40.5 up front, 37.6 in row two and 36.3 in row three, while shoulder room comes in at 65.0, 64.6 and 61.1. Cargo volume is 87.1 cubic feet behind row two and 39.1 cubic feet behind the third row. My Salsa Pearl Red housein-motion was coupled with a light gray fabric inside and contained a push button start, rear-seat entertainment (option) with a 16.4inch LCD screen which op-

Also in the cabin are remote keyless entry with lock, twostage unlock, and panic function; fabric-trimmed six-way driver’s captain’s chair with seat back pocket; removable fabric-trimmed second row captain’s chairs with tip up and long slide features four-way front passenger captain’s chair with seat back pocket; trizone manual CFC-free air conditioning with air filter and rear control panel; tilt/ telescopic steering wheel, analog speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, LCD odometer, and trip meters; overhead console with map lights, door light setting, dome light control, conversation mirror, and sunglass holder; 10 cup holders and retractable assist grips at all outboard seating positions. Safety items include electronic brake assist; elec-

tronic stability and traction control systems, active frontal anti-whiplash head restraints; full-length curtain airbags overhead; side, head, passenger and depowered airbags and individual tire pressure monitoring system. The Sienna LE’s base price is set at $31,330. Options included: Towing prep option ($220); Paint protection film ($395); Roof rack cross bars ($185); Wheel locks ($67); Mudguards ($99); First aid kit ($29); Emergency assistance kit ($70) and Delivery, processing and han-

dling charges of $810 for a drive-off of $33,205 plus tax and license, but incentives abound, so check your local dealer. A luxury house on wheels for $33,205 is an aggressive buy in any market. ——— Mike Blake, former editor of KIT CAR magazine, joined Carlisle Events as senior automotive journalist in 2004. Honda minivan tops in fuel economy By ANN M. JOB For The Associated Press

The redesigned-for-2011 Honda Odyssey is longer and wider than other major minivans, but it’s still tops in fuel economy. With sleeker styling and lighter weight than its predecessor, the roomy, V-6powered 2011 Odyssey with six-speed automatic transmission is rated at 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway by the federal government. For 2011, Variable Cylinder Management, which can automatically deactivate engine cylinders when they’re not needed, such as when the van is coasting, is standard on all Odysseys. It previously was reserved for the top Odyssey models. Best of all, perhaps, for everyone riding long distances in this van, the Odyssey has voice recognition commands for navigation and song selection as well as a 16.2-inch, ultrawide, splitscreen-capable display that folds down from the ceiling aft of the front seats for good viewing by second- and third-row passengers. The system has HDMI technology, too, and because of its wide, rectangular shape, this screen does not block a driver’s view out the back of the vehicle. This rear entertainment system is on certain Odyssey models. But all Odysseys still have the one-hand, fold-and-flip down, split rear seats that fit smoothly into a recessed cavity to make way for a flat cargo load floor. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for the 2011 Odyssey is $28,580. The test model, a top-ofthe-line Odyssey Touring Elite with all available factory features already on it, was

All Odysseys come with a 248-horsepower V-6 and automatic transmission. Competitors include the 2011 Toyota Sienna, which has a starting retail price of $27,270 with 187-horsepower four cylinder and $29,910 with 266-horsepower V-6. Another top-selling van is the Dodge Grand Caravan with a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $25,830 for a passenger van.

Consistent top seller Minivans, as they’re still called, waned in popularity in the last 10 years as families moved to sport utility vehicles, which have become increasingly car-like in ride and amenities. But the Odyssey remains a consistent top seller, though quality ratings have slipped. In the latest J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study released in June, before the 2011 Odyssey was out, the predecessor Odyssey didn’t rank among the

Toyo- miles per gallon in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. ta’s Sienna, the Kia Sedona and the Grand Caravan held those spots. Still, it’s easy to see why families — young and old — can enjoy this new, fourthgeneration Odyssey. Interior space is generous and pleasant, and this includes a noteworthy 42.4 inches in the third row seats. Indeed, thanks to the lengthened body, passengers in all three rows have at least 40 inches of legroom. Middle seats — three separate sections in the test van — could move forward on their tracks by a decent 1.6 inches, so passengers can arrange seats so everyone shares good legroom. And the new, extra-wide sliding door openings were a dream as elderly, less mobile passengers entered and exited without fuss. Everyone liked that the passenger floor is flat, too. Passengers also commented about the nicely padded the leather-trimmed seats. They

don’t feel like thick, hard, foam but have some give in them as people sit down. Plus, the Odyssey has the most anchor and tether points for installation of child safety seats of any normal production vehicle — five. So families with quintuplets will have no problem.

Well thought out The wide front center console is well thought out. The covered storage area is large enough for most purses, and the top of the cover has a high enough lip to keep cell phones and other loose articles from tumbling out during turns. The console can even be removed entirely, if a driver needs to move from the front to the back seats without going outside. The navigation screen in the dashboard is large, and letters and numbers are good-sized and easy to read. The Odyssey is a tad bit lower to the ground now, so

the step up is a bit easier to make. But everyone continues to sit up well above the road, and the driver and front passenger, in particular, can see above cars and down the road. And the ride is quite smooth. I felt only big road bumps a bit harshly. To make the new Odyssey more aerodynamic, the windshield is more steeply raked than before, and the roof rack is gone. So wind noise is reduced. Passengers still hear a good amount of road noise from the tires, though, and sounds from a loud diesel semihauler came through readily into the test Odyssey. Driving the test van, I had ample power from the 3.5liter, single overhead cam V6 — no matter if I was merging into city traffic or passing on a highway. Torque peaks at 250 footpounds at 4,800 rpm, and since the new Odyssey is about 75 pounds lighter than

its predecessor, the vehicle moves right along. Shifts from the six-speed transmission were smooth, and while I could hear the engine as it accelerated, the sounds were pleasant, not strained, even when the van carried six people. Note that the six-speed is in Touring and Touring Elite trim level Odysseys. All others have a five-speed automatic, but even with that, the government mileage rating is class-leading among V-6 vans: 18/27 mpg. The bright green letters “ECO” illuminate every time the engine cylinders are deactivated to conserve fuel. Honest, that’s the only way a driver knows the van is saving fuel by using fewer engine cylinders. All Odysseys come with the usual standard safety features including curtain air bags, antilock brakes and stability and traction control.
