Consulate News Celebration of 71st Republic Day of India (January 26, 2020) 71st Republic Day 2020 was celebrated with great pride and fervor at Consulate General of India, Vancouver with members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India. The day commemorates coming into force of the Indian constitution, the longest written constitution in the world which guarantees fundamental rights as well as outlines fundamental duties for citizens of India.

Celebration of 71st Republic Day of India – Evening Reception (January 26, 2020) A reception to celebrate the 71st Republic Day of India was held in the evening of 26 January 2020, at Fraserview Banquet Hall. Hon’ble Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Provincial Government of British Columbia was the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Harry Bains, Minister of Labor, Deputy Speaker Hon’ble Raj Chauhan, Hon’ble MLAs Jinny Sims and Jagrup Brar graced the occasion along with some municipal Councilors, members of Consular Corps, representatives of gurdwaras, temples, cultural and community associations, academia, media persons and distinguished guests from all walks of life. Consul General Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi addressed the gathering and highlighted the friendly ties between India and Canada and recalled the contribution of the vibrant Indian origin diaspora as a living bridge between the two nations. Minister Bruce Ralston, conveying greetings from the Premier, spoke of the strong economic, cultural, commercial and academic relations between India and the province of BC. A congratulatory message by Hon’ble Kerry Lynne-Findlay, MP, was read out on the occasion by Consul Manjish Grover, who anchored the event. Guests were treated to a melodious sitar performance by Ms. Anju Bedi, graceful Bharatnatyam by Nandanum School of Dance and a high voltage Bhangra performance by the Royal Academy of Bhangra, showcasing the rich culture and diversity of India.

Presentation of Books to Vancouver Public Library (January 31, 2020) As part of an yearlong celebration of 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Consul General of India in Vancouver, Mrs. Abhilasha Joshi today presented to the Vancouver Public Library a gift of books on Sikhism and Sikh Heritage. The books were presented by Consul General Joshi to Ms. Jennifer Chan, VPL Board Chair at the Central branch in downtown Vancouver at 350 West Georgia. Also present on the occasion were Ms. Kay Cahill, Director, Collections & Technology at VPL and Ms. Inness Campbell, Manager, Collections & Technical Services at VPL. From the Consulate Manjish Grover, Consul (Commerce & Culture), Rajinder Kumar, Vice Consul (Commerce & Culture), Nikunj Nayak, Marketing Assistant and Gibson Mathew Jacob, Cultural Assistant were present at the occasion. After presenting the gift of books, Consul General in her address to the gathering highlighted the core message of oneness and harmony given by Guru Nanak Dev ji to mankind. She also mentioned that the Golden Temple is one of the most visited religious places in India. Consul General also made a special mention of the invaluable contributions of the Indian Diaspora in Canada. She expressed the hope that these books will prove to be a valuable addition to the Vancouver Public Library and will be used by scholars and regular readers alike.

InMobi: India’s first unicorn A mobile advertising technology start-up known as InMobi founded as mKhoj (mobile khoj) in 2007 by Naveen Tewari, Mohit Saxena, Amit Gupta and Abhay Singhal. InMobi is an Indian global provider of enterprise platforms for marketers. The platform enables consumers to discover new products and services by providing contextual, relevant, and curated recommendations on mobile apps and devices. Their mobile-first platform allows brands, developers and publishers to engage consumers through mobile advertising. InMobi has raised a total of US$215.6 million in three rounds of funding – US$0.5 million in 2007, US$7.1 million in Series A funding in 2008, US$8 million in Series B funding in 2010, US$200 million in Series C funding in 2011. The company’s valuation reached US$1 billion and became India’s first unicorn in 2014. Today, InMobi has 22 offices in 12 countries across 5 continents and employs around 1000 people. Indian Ecommerce Industry THE INDIAN E-COMMERCE industry has been on an upward growth trajectory and is expected to surpass the US to become the second largest e-commerce market in the world by 2034. Market Size: • • • •

Propelled by rising smartphone penetration, the launch of 4G networks and increasing consumer wealth, the Indian ecommerce market is expected to grow to US$ 200 billion by 2026 from US$ 38.5 billion in 2017. The ongoing digital transformation in the country is expected to increase India’s total internet user base to 829 million by 2021 from 636.73 million in FY19. India’s internet economy is expected to double from US$ 125 billion as of April 2017 to US$ 250 billion by 2020, majorly backed by ecommerce. India’s E-commerce revenue is expected to jump from US$ 39 billion in 2017 to US$ 120 billion in 2020, growing at an annual rate of 51 per cent, the highest in the world.

In August 2019, Amazon acquired 49 per cent stake in a unit of Future Group. Reliance to invest Rs 20,0000 crore (US$ 2.86 billion) in its telecom business to expand its broadband and E-commerce presence and to offer 5G services. In September 2019, PhonePe launched super-app platform 'Switch’ to provide a one stop solution for customers integrating several other merchants’ apps. • In November 2019, Nykaa opened its 55th offline store marking success in tier II and tier III cities. • Flipkart, after getting acquired by Walmart for US$ 16 billion, is expected to launch more offline retail stores in India to promote private labels in segments such as fashion and electronics. • As of March 2019, Flipkart launched its internal fund of about US$ 60-100 million to invest from early stage to seed innovations related to e-commerce industry. • Paytm has launched its bank - Paytm Payment Bank. Government e-Marketplace (GeM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Union Bank of India to facilitate a cashless, paperless and transparent payment system for an array of services in October 2019. In February 2019, the Government of India released the Draft National E-Commerce Policy which encourages FDI in the marketplace model of e-commerce In order to increase the participation of foreign players in the e-commerce field, the Indian Government hiked the limit of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the E-commerce marketplace model for up to 100 per cent (in B2B models). How is it celebrated: To celebrate the Guru's birthday, Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji, the holy book of the religion, is read by followers. A Nagar Kirtan possession is taken out and a special arti (a holy fire ritual) is performed. Devotees also take a customary dip in the water and offer prayers in the temples dedicated to the Guru. Shri Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Mandir, in Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi, sees a major celebration.

India To Unveil World’s Second Largest Gamma-Ray Telescope In 2020 The world’s second-largest gamma-ray telescope, known as the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment Telescope (MACE), will go live this year, reports The Print. The Cerenkov telescope is also the highest in the world, located in Hanle, Ladakh at an altitude of 4,300 meters above sea level. It has a 21-meter diameter, a few meters short of the world’s largest telescope of the same class — High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) located in Namibia. The telescope, which captures huge energy emitting gamma-ray photons, is a combined effort by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). 3. India tops clean energy investment rankings among emerging markets In a first, India has topped the clean energy investment rankings among 104 emerging markets worldwide in a Bloomberg NEF survey. In the top five, followed by India, were Chile, Brazil, China, and Kenya. The survey evaluated the ability of the emerging markets to attract capital for low-carbon energy sources while building a greener economy.
