ENCOUNTER FRANK TO Encounters of the other Kind. To encounter is to step into the unknown. It’s the sensation of experiencing something daring and sometimes the unfamiliar. Inspired by his research with the Perth Museum & Art Gallery permanent collection, this exhibition includes new large drawings by Frank and a new copper-plate gunpowder work for the collection. The exhibition focuses on the artist’s perception of the use of drawing as the traditional training method for artists, as well as the ‘encounter’ of studying the artworks of the Old Masters.

AGAINST THE FLOW – FILM PREMIERE HELEN MCCRORIE A new moving-image commission, inspired by moving stories of family photographs lost in local floods. How do we preserve our most precious memories and what is really worth keeping? What becomes of personal and local histories in the digital age? Based on research from Platform 2017, in collaboration with the community of Comrie, local narratives are intertwined with memories of a river in spate and the artist explores the value of archives that are marginalised or overlooked. In a unique film premiere and live event, Earnsong Community Choir will perform songs about rivers and memories. The Comrie choir will be led by renowned song leaders: folk pioneer Christine Kydd (www.christinekydd.com), Georgian song tutor Irene Railley and the choir’s musical director Adelaide Carlow (www.ashtreemusic.com.) Dr Sarah Neely, senior professor in media at Stirling University, will be guest speaker at the event. The film will also be shown in an exhibition in Comrie library. VENUE 3 Perth Playhouse PAGE 4

WASTE LAND - SUSIE JOHNSTON Perth based visual artist Susie Johnston has been in residence locally at Binn Group, Shore Road, accessing metal waste and creating a series of sculptural works to be realised for Platform 2018. Susie has used her newly acquired skills of mig welding to create works from the metal waste which she has been generously gifted by Binn Group for this project. Susie’s motivation behind making the work stems from challenging a linear economy model of ‘make, use, dispose’ to a circular economy model of ‘make, use, reuse and reuse again’ extracting the maximum value of an object whilst in use and then recovering and regenerating ultimately reducing waste.. He will also be travelling the bus routes of Perth and Perthshire to engage with passengers, bus staff and anyone impacted by the bus routes to pen some new poems but most importantly to encourage people to pen their own poems based on their travels. Using text, e-mail, scraps of paper persuade them to submit their words so they can be pulled together and displayed or even published later in the year.
