WELCOME
creative process with other artists and share new work with our audience. I believe the arts should be accessible to everyone, so the Crawl offers a variety of no-cost, engaging and vibrant arts programming opportunities for people of all ages.
Photo: Wendy D.
We are extremely pleased to offer the 27 th anniversary edition of the Culture Crawl Visual Art, Design and Crafts Festival as so many artists are ready to exhibit their new and exciting work and connect with the public eager to view it. We have added many events leading up to the Crawl, including: curated exhibits at the Pendulum Gallery, the CULTCH, Alternative Creations Gallery, and the Charles Clark Gallery at Strange Fellows Brewing; Talking Art featuring artists discussing their work; and, Moving Art which presents video/film artists in the Eastside Arts District. I am thrilled to play a part in bringing the Culture Crawl festival to the public which contributes to the audience’s enjoyment and appreciation of the arts through accessible exhibits and open studios. The arts are a catalyst to a better understanding of each other, allowing us to make new connections through the shared experience of appreciating the arts. The Crawl showcases local professional and emerging artists and acts as a springboard for new connections and opportunities. The festival bridges cultures, art forms, and disciplines. The Eastside

The EAS is grateful to gather on these lands and waters, and we work from a place of respect and responsibility to this gift. 2

As the Artistic & Executive Director of the Crawl, I have always been passionate about making opportunities to explore the
A few years back, we changed the name of our society to the Eastside Arts Society, which better reflects the breadth of programming and activities we are undertaking. Three years ago, we established the CREATE! Arts Festival and programmed art-making in Strathcona Park. It has been popular both with the artists and the public. We are already planning for next year and envision expanding the festival to other venues throughout the Eastside Arts District. And speaking of the Eastside Arts District (EAD), we have garnered tremendous support from all levels of government, and there is a great deal of enthusiasm and momentum for the community to advance this initiative. We are completing a business plan for the EAD and are starting the process of greater stakeholder engagement. I remain convinced the EAD will further the goals we have for artist space retention and development; for increasing awareness of the arts; and for providing the public with a unique experience and engagement with the arts. Special thanks to our incredibly hard-working team, Erin, Sam, Jenelle, Kris, Sierra and also to Jodie and Holly for stepping in at a critical time for us. Huge thanks to members of our Spaces and Development committees and our committed Board of Directors, who contribute greatly to advancing our vision and our programs and initiatives. I am truly grateful for your support. Last but not least, a thank you to all of the artists who continue to be creative regardless of the many and varied challenges they are confronted with. It is a privilege and inspiring to work with you. Enjoy and help us celebrate our 27 th year! ART HAPPENS HERE! Esther Rausenberg A R T IS T I C & E X EC U T I V E D I R EC TO R
Our dedicated team has been pivotal in crafting year-round public programming that empowers artists and cultivates a thriving arts and culture community. The annual Culture Crawl event serves as a vital connection between artists and the public, offering a platform to spotlight the remarkable and diverse talent that resides within this district.

Out Of Control 2023 Exhibit October 23–November 25, 2023
We are thrilled to be presenting once again, a multi-venue, salon-style curated exhibition at the Cultch, Alternative Creations Gallery, Strange Fellows Gallery, and the Pendulum Gallery. The theme of this year's exhibition is Out of Control and features 80 visual artists who have studios in the Eastside Arts District. It hints at breaking rules, being reckless, wild, and unrestricted, affecting our daily lives and the world at large. At a time when we start to celebrate our freedom from the pandemic restrictions, it's an opportunity to reclaim experiences that were denied, a chance to think outside the box and let go.

Moving Art 2023 Transmission: Message & Metamorphosis 10TH ANNUAL EASTSIDE CULTURE CRAWL FILM AND VIDEO EXHIBITION
Shirley Wiebe
“How meanings change/change us” In an age where communication has become inseparable from the tools that enable it, the mode of transmission has become inextricably linked to the mediums through which we receive messages. These conversations transform the ways we perceive the world, challenge our preconceptions, and inspire personal and societal change. This year’s selections connect one with the other: the subconscious with conscious, water with grief, and folklore to modern storytelling. Stairways that pull you backwards (and forwards) across borders, intersect artistic conversations, and reinterpret modern phrases. We speak to the animals and recognize them within ourselves. The message is the medium, and the medium is us.

This year’s series of Talking Art panels unveils the artistic expression and emotional connections behind the work of ten very different artists. Through medium and message, trial and error, and visible and invisible constraints, Crawl artists share the stories that shape their work across three distinct mediums—deepening the experience of their artworks and leading to greater connection for us all. Studio 101 Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program dedicated to supporting diverse and engaging artistic experiences for East Vancouver’s youth. Many Eastside schools have limited exposure to professional artists and arts experiences beyond the classroom. Studio 101 brings school children into participating Eastside Culture Crawl artist studio spaces for free, hands-on workshops. For many participants, it is their first time connecting with professional artists. The program provides students insights into the various phases of the creative process, while promoting creative confidence and fostering an appreciation of the visual arts.

The Eastside Arts District The Eastside Arts Society’s ongoing commitment is to build and strengthen capacity for artists and arts organizations within the geographic region of Vancouver’s Eastside and to enhance and promote the connectivity of the arts with the public. Vancouver’s Eastside is home to the highest concentration of artists of any neighbourhood across Canada and the birthplace of the annual Eastside Culture Crawl, which this year celebrates its 27 th anniversary. EAS has advanced the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in BC and provides artists, designers, craftspeople, and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. EAS strives to develop programming and initiatives that are open and inclusive to all artists, from emerging to established. It has done this by developing one of the first visual art, design and crafts festivals, the Eastside Culture Crawl, and in doing so has helped the visual arts to break away from traditional models governing the visual arts.
Following two incredible years of growing our new summertime art-making event, we were thrilled to welcome back the CREATE! Arts Festival for its third year this July, with even more offerings for people of all ages and abilities to explore their creative expression in collaboration with the Eastside Arts District community. In 2022, EAS released the Seizing the Moment report illustrating the history, landscape and plans for the development of the Eastside Arts District. The EAD is envisioned as a thriving, sustainable cultural ecology where the practice of arts and culture drives creativity, identity, celebration, and community. Located in Vancouver’s Eastside, we anticipate the EAD to be: an inclusive and collaborative neighborhood, a hub of artistic creation, innovation, economic activity, production and presentation; a driver of affordable, accessible permanent infrastructure and facilities designed for cultural activities; and uniquely branded and promoted to reflect its diverse communities.
To Our Volunteers! Our “Crawlunteers” are crucial to the operation of our organization. We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to each and every volunteer who graciously contributed their time and efforts to support the delivery of the 27 th anniversary Eastside Culture Crawl!
“I volunteer with the Crawl simply because I love the art and the creative people of my home town. I have met many amazing people, some of whom I now call friends! It is an amazing feeling being a part of something that is so big, and so uniquely East Vancouver.” —justin j.

FAQ HOW IS THE CR AWL FESTIVAL GOING TO WORK THIS YEAR? Artists will be opening their studios to welcome attendees once again and we will have an assortment of preview programming online, such as our Moving Art and Talking Art series, as well as in-person at our Preview Exhibits. WHAT ARE YOUR SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR THE FESTIVAL? As we continue to navigate life with COVID, we strongly encourage attendees to be up to date on their COVID vaccinations, practice hand hygiene, and stay home if sick. While masks are no longer required in indoor public spaces, artists and studio buildings can choose to require masks on their premises. We kindly ask that attendees follow all respective artists/ studio safety guidelines (if any) and be respectful and kind as you consider others' situations and comfort levels. You can find our Operational & Safety Guidelines for attendees here. WHAT ARE THE FESTIVAL HOURS? NOVEMBER 16–19 OPEN STUDIO FESTIVAL WEEKEND Thursday & Friday 5–10pm Saturday & Sunday 11am–6pm Some programming will be delivered online, such as Moving Art and Talking Art. Please check our Events page for complete details.
WHERE CAN I EAT AND DRINK? You don't have to go far to find amazing food around the Crawl area. We have a host of great food trucks at Parker Street Studios, including: Chickpea, Mom’s Grilled Cheese, Disco Cheetah, Hugs Minis, Green Coast, Bistrovan, Indish and Camion Café. Also, check out our map for some of our other favourites. IS THERE A CHARGE FOR THE EVENT? There is no charge to attend the festival. DO YOU HAVE AN ATM? There are no ATMs. Contactless methods of payments are strongly encouraged this year. Many artists have electronic payment devices. WHAT SHOULD I BRING? A comfortable pair of shoes, water, and an umbrella. Don’t be deterred by a little rain! CAN I TAKE PHOTOS? Please respect the artists and ask before taking photographs in any studio. Share your photos using our official hashtag #eastsideculturecrawl CAN I BRING MY KIDS? Kids love art and we encourage families to join us at this event. CAN I BRING MY PETS? Inconsideration of others, please leave your pets at home!
Getting Around We encourage everyone to walk, bike, take transit or use a car-share to get around the Culture Crawl. Many buildings are within easy walking distance from each other! BY BIKE SHARE Whether you're looking for a fun and convenient way to get to Eastside Culture Crawl events, commute to work, run errands or explore the city, navigate Vancouver by bike share! Get free access from Thursday, November 16–Sunday, November 19. To redeem, go to Choose a Plan, select the 24 Hour Pass and input the promo code culturecrawl23. For 24 hours, this pass entitles you to unlimited 30-minute classic bike rides and 25 cents/minute for the first 30 minutes for ebikes. The bikes can be unlocked from one station and returned to any one of the 250+ stations conveniently located across the city. PARKING Street parking is available around many of the studios. Generally, parking near the larger buildings such as Parker Street Studios is difficult.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTISTS IN THE CR AWL? Visit our Artists page to see participating Crawl artists. You can browse images, search for a specific artist or building, or filter by the medium(s) you are interested in. culturecrawl.ca
