EASTSIDE CULTURE CRAWL nov 17-20, 2022

Explore the Crawl!

WELCOME

The Eastside Arts Society (EAS) recognizes, with gratitude, that we are working on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the xw məθkw əy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. These areas are culturally significant sites in terms of their historic contexts, but also equally important as contemporary sites of gathering, learning and exchange. We are extremely pleased to offer the 26th anniversary edition of the Culture Crawl Visual Arts, Photo: Adam P.W. Smith Design and Crafts Festival as so many artists are ready to showcase their new and exciting work and welcome you into their studios. Every year, the “Crawl”, as it is affectionately known, reveals unknown treasures and keeps the flame of a vibrant arts scene alive. This year, we take great pleasure in presenting what we now refer to as the “Classic Crawl” ; the open studio program offering a confluence of artistic mediums, styles, and influences created by a combination of established artists and artists on the rise.

Welcome to the 26th annual Eastside Culture Crawl Festival. On behalf of the Eastside Arts Society (EAS) Board Photo: Adam P.W. Smith of Directors, I’d like to sincerely thank and acknowledge all the artists, members, staff, partners, and community for their ongoing dedication to the society. It’s with your support we continue to make art happen year after year in the Eastside Arts District. We believe in the vibrant power of arts, and the EAS is committed to the growth of our diverse arts community. Throughout the year, our dynamic public programming has been crafting new critical frameworks to bring regular programming to our arts and culture community and creating capacity for artists to thrive. The annual Culture Crawl event is a catalyst for connecting artists to the public, and a platform to share the incredible and diverse talent in this district. Art participation creates a virtuous cycle. The more we engage and appreciate the arts, the more our hearts and minds are open to new experiences – creating a deeper connection to our creative community that fosters a greater sense of belonging and a lifelong love of the arts. Together we are building a thriving arts community and we are so glad you are a part of it.

Eastside Arts Society The Eastside Arts Society’s ongoing commitment is to build and strengthen capacity for artists and arts organizations within the geographic region of Vancouver’s Eastside and to enhance the connectivity of arts with the public. Vancouver’s Eastside is home to the highest concentration of artists in any neighbourhood across Canada and the birthplace of the annual Eastside Culture Crawl, which celebrates its 26th anniversary in November 2022. For 26 years EAS has advanced the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in BC and provides artists, designers, craft artists and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. EAS strives to develop programming and initiatives that are open and inclusive to all artists from emerging to established. It has done this by developing one of the first visual arts, design and craft festivals in Vancouver, the Eastside Culture Crawl; a seminal event that breaks away from traditional models governing the visual arts.

This year, EAS presented the 2nd annual CREATE! Arts Festival, a two-day community arts-making festival, in July 2022. This year’s festival doubled in size from the pilot event in 2021 and featured art workshops, activities and demos, as well as a food and beer garden at its new home at Strathcona Park. The festival was a huge success with both artists and the community and it will return July 22nd and 23rd, 2023. In 2022, EAS released the Seizing the Moment report illustrating the history, landscape and plans for the development of the Eastside Arts District. Vancouver’s Eastside is a vibrant and distinct arts and culture ecology with the core characteristics that make a successful arts and cultural district. In formally establishing the Eastside Arts District, the Eastside Arts Society aims to lead and collectively advocate for the sustainability of all arts and culture on the Eastside.

The theme of this year's Crawl exhibitions is NEXT. After the extraordinary challenges of the last couple of years, there seems to be a longing for change or a sense of normalcy. For this exciting exhibit, Eastside Culture Crawl artists present opportunities to reach for something new, perhaps a fresh start, or maybe the progression of current practices. It will explore the aftereffects of living through a pandemic as we long for and ponder about what's NEXT. For exhibiting artists visit culturecrawl.ca/events. Moving Art: A Collective Point in Time 9th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl Film and Video Exhibition ONLINE PREMIERE

Monday, November 7 6pm

Still from Somos Shikilit (We Are Indigo) by Rosalina Libertad Cerritos

"You can't turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again." Bonnie Prudden A point in time, a rift in space. As the cloud of restrictions lifted, artists emerged from time machines of self-reflection to embrace time, space and travel. Histories were juxtaposed, pulled apart, and reinterpreted. Barriers expanded, contracted, and were transformed into signposts for community and opportunity. The personal became panoramic, diaspora domestic, and the common unique. A bison runs with an iron horse, cone worms break boundaries, and birds herald virtual worlds orbited by a new planet and explored by extraordinary lanterns. Alone, we peeled the orange of grief, but together we celebrate our collective force. This year’s selections reflect an awareness of our shared humanity buffeted by space, time, and the stardust that weaves us together and populates our genetic code. Moving Art is partnering with the Lumière Festival, where the film and video exhibition can be viewed on roving bicycle projections nightly from November 17-27. Check culturecrawl.ca/events for scheduled times.

This year’s Talking Art series focuses on perspectives of Form in Crawl art practices. In the first night of three panels, member artists talk about their work and relationships to creativity and its embodiment. The second night explores artists' works that use technology, such as artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, or question these new forms of artmaking. On the final night artists share their perspectives on art for mental health and wellness.

Alcohol ink is a translucent, acid free, highly pigmented fluid medium intended for applying to a nonporous surface. Alcohol ink is made of dye and alcohol; the alcohol gives the dye its fluid nature. With a hair dryer and pump, ink will be pushed and layered on canvas. Using the Stippling effect (creating small/big dots) we will create blooms and on the final step black/ white/silver/gold pen work will be added.

Abstract Landscape Painting with Cat Pino In my painting practice, I believe everything instinctively follows one path and should not be interfered with or altered. In other words, if you go with the flow, the images will come easily and effortlessly. If you disrupt the flow, the images will come with resistance and friction. I will demonstrate how this philosophy can be applied on abstract landscapes only using three colors and masking tape. OCTOPUS STUDIOS

much needed and valued opportunities to connect artists with the public. In addition to our cherished Culture Crawl, the EAS produced the 2nd annual CREATE! Arts Festival and continues our work to make the Eastside Arts District a reality. Through our expanded programming, we remain focused on supporting, protecting and celebrating the visual artists who have forged the unique and cherished creative cultural ecology of East Vancouver we all know and love.

Beyond the Culture Crawl festival, Eastside Arts Society (EAS) programs Studio 101; an educational initiative that explores the arts with students from Eastside schools and connects elementary school students with local artists for free hands-on projects, developing the next generation of artists and art lovers. For many of the 220 + youth we work with, Studio 101 is a vital point of connection during these uncertain times.

Studio 101 Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program dedicated to supporting diverse and engaging artistic experiences for Vancouver’s Eastside youth. Many Eastside schools have limited exposure to professional artists and arts experiences beyond the classroom. Studio 101 brings school children into participating Eastside Culture Crawl artist studio spaces for free, hands-on workshops. For many participants, it is their first time connecting with professional artists. The program provides students insights into the various phases of the creative process, while promoting creative confidence and fostering an appreciation of the visual arts.

Photos: Jodie Ponto

This year, the program will return fully in-person to offer classroom activities and small group visits to artists’ studios for immersive hands-on workshops. Elementary students from grades 4-7 from Britannia Elementary, Seymour Elementary, Strathcona and Xpey’ Elementary schools will take part in workshops to create ceramics, painting, and mixed media items. The program was conceived in 2007 and is proudly supported by the Eastside Arts Society, Herschel Supply Co., Opus Art Supplies, Vancouver Odd Fellows and made possible by the generous support of Jamie Kim, Franco Ferrari, Ruth Scheuing, Banveer Ghatora, Shannon Harris, Mina Laudan and Nancy Sweedler.

The Eastside Arts District Seizing the Moment Vancouver’s Eastside is a vibrant and distinct arts and culture ecology with the core characteristics that make a successful arts and cultural district. In formally establishing the Eastside Arts District, the Eastside Arts Society aims to lead and collectively advocate for the sustainability of all arts and culture on the Eastside. The Eastside has the highest concentration of artists, musicians, performers, and cultural producers in Vancouver and is known nationally and internationally as a vital part of Vancouver’s cultural identity. Much of the Eastside was historically a lower-

rent and primarily light industrial zone, but it is changing. Redevelopment and the economic consequences of the pandemic have exacerbated the financial burden on artists and cultural producers. We believe the local arts and culture economy will emerge from the pandemic with a passionate sense of the importance of gathering in physical space. This is the time to seize the moment of heightened public demand, celebrate Vancouver’s diverse creativity, and ensure this sector’s long-term sustainability. The Eastside Arts Society (formerly the Eastside Culture Crawl Society) has been a leader in shaping the area as a community, economic, and arts and cultural hub for over 25 years. In 2019, the Eastside Arts Society (EAS) published the award-winning report A City Without Art? No Net Loss, Plus!, which quantified the net loss of 400,000 ft2 of artist studio space on the Eastside in the preceding 10 years. However, the story of

unaffordability, displacement and erasure is not limited to the visual arts and is a common story shared by other artistic disciplines. Through capacity building initiatives, new and expanded policies, innovative funding opportunities, arts and cultural asset mapping, and inclusive governance, a formally established Eastside Arts District (EAD) will amplify the voices of Vancouver’s artistic community.

ThankYou TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!

Our “Crawlunteers” are crucial to the operation of our organization. We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to each and every volunteer who graciously contributed their time and efforts to support the delivery of the 26th anniversary Eastside Culture Crawl!

“I volunteer with the Crawl simply because I love the art and the creative people of my home town. I have met many amazing people, some of whom I now call friends! It is an amazing feeling being a part of something that is so big, and so uniquely East Vancouver.” -justin j.
