Welcome!

to the 25th Edition of the Eastside Culture Crawl! The Eastside Arts Society (EAS) gratefully recognizes that we are working on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. These areas are culturally significant sites in terms of their historic contexts, but also equally important as contemporary sites of gathering, learning and exchange.

On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I want to welcome everyone to the 25th Eastside Culture Crawl Visual Art, Design & Craft Festival.

On behalf of Premier John Horgan and the Government of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome you to the 25th annual Eastside Culture Crawl.

We are fortunate to have a strong and creative arts community here in Vancouver. I am proud of the many celebrations of art and culture that occur during the year and across the City. The Eastside Culture Crawl is certainly one of Vancouver’s cultural treasures. There are many talented artists boasting a variety of crafts in the Eastside neighbourhood who are eager to share their talents with cultural crawlers year after year. It is the unique character of our city that allows us to be able to appreciate and participate in a celebration of the arts such as the Eastside Culture Crawl.

Congratulations to the festival partners, artists, volunteers, and crew and thank you, for being a terrific example of 25 years of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the arts sector.

I want to thank the organizers of the Culture Crawl, the artists who are willing to showcase their talents, and everyone who makes this event such a success. I am sure everyone participating will enjoy another wonderful festival! Sincerely, mayor kennedy stewart

Every year, I look forward to the seeing the variety of art and crafts that shine a bright light on the talent in our neighbourhood and city. I am the proud daughter of East Vancouver, and I am incredibly proud to be the MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant and I send my gratitude to the attendees, crew and the arts community for their work and dedication to building lively, spirited, and resilient communities. Eastside Arts Society This year, the Eastside Culture Crawl Society (ECCS) rebranded and changed its name to the Eastside Arts Society (EAS), in recognition of the organization’s ongoing commitment to build and strengthen capacity for artists and arts organizations within the geographic region of Vancouver’s Eastside and to enhance the connectivity with the public.

This year, EAS presented the 1st annual CREATE! Arts Festival, a two-day community arts-making festival in August 2021—an idea widely supported by both local artists and the public. The festival was a huge success and sold-out all of the hands-on art making workshops led by local visual artists and craft makers.

Vancouver’s Eastside is home to the highest concentration of artists in any neighbourhood across Canada and the birthplace of the annual Eastside Culture Crawl, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in November 2021.

In 2021, EAS embarked on a pioneering new initiative: development of an Eastside Arts District (EAD). The EAD will transform the arts and cultural assets in the Eastside from an informal grassroots network of stakeholders into a formalized organization with stable funding and secure, long-term facilities for artists and cultural venues. Recognizing that artists are being squeezed out of affordable spaces, some key components of this initiative are to support the development and protection of cultural spaces, providing capacity building opportunities for artists and arts organizations, and promoting artists and arts organizations in this community.

For 25 years, EAS has advanced the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in BC and provides artists, designers, craft artists and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. EAS strives to develop programming and initiatives that are open and inclusive to all artists, from emerging to established. It has done this through developing one of the first visual art, design and craft festivals, the Eastside Culture Crawl, and in doing so has been a ground breaker for the visual arts to break away from traditional models governing the visual arts. 4 art happens here • culturecrawl.ca

We are so appreciative to Terry for the time he has spent curating this 138,000 square foot, 117-year-old warehouse, into a unique and thriving artistic hub, a renowned city landmark and the heart of the Eastside Culture Crawl. Terry has been pivotal in shepherding Parker Street studios into an eclectic mix of designers, builders and artisans. Through Terry’s knowledge and appreciation of the unique needs of the local art community, he ensured that the right mix of artists and builders would grow together at Parker Street, fostering a one-of-a-kind hub of collaboration and creativity. Terry helped connect budding artists with long-term established ones to create new opportunities, and networked with the local art groups to assist in the success of the Eastside Culture Crawl and the Parker Street Art Salon. Treasured Facilities Manager Terry Kaufenberg retired this year after a dedicated and humblyserved twenty-five years stewarding Parker Street Studios.

thoughtful and meaningful juxtaposition, Ken used "found and recycled materials" such as old glass, mirrors, metal, old jewelry, rust, toys, pieces of car emblems, wood, wire, photos, paper, broken taillights, neon, hubcaps, and other car related treasures and antiques. As a committed environmentalist, he believed in recycling and reusing everything possible, often citing that, in his work, "the medium WAS the message".

Perhaps equally as important, Terry has maintained an unwavering dedication to ensuring the foundations of Parker Street remain true

to their roots, and has managed to push back against potential changes to the neighbourhood that may have compromised the entire heart of what Parker Street is about. His quick-thinking and dedication have saved the building numerous times over the years from various challenges brought by floods, wind, rain, fires and all other types of human-driven catastrophes. As we all know, artist and maker spaces are becoming more difficult to come by as development continues to churn through the city, and Terry has been pivotal in standing up for Parker Street to remain exactly as it was intended by Keith Beedie when he purchased the building all those years ago. We can truly say Parker Street Studios would not be what it is today without Terry. We at the Crawl extend our deepest gratitude to Terry and wish him all the best as he enters the next phase of his life, one that is focused on his greatest passions: music and his family. culturecrawl.ca •

Surfacing: 2021 Exhibit

25th Anniversary Edition! November 1–November 30, 2021 The Preview Exhibitions are back in celebration of our 25th Anniversary! We are thrilled to be mounting a multi-venue, salon-style curated exhibition at the Cultch (online), the Firehall Arts Centre, Alternative Creations, and new this year, the Pendulum Gallery and Herschel Infinity Room. This year’s exhibition, Surfacing, will harness the creative force gestated in this pandemic period and chronicle the new directions of recent works. This pandemic has been a unique time of introspection and solitude, and artists have taken this opportunity to break complacency, reignite passions and discover unforeseen thematic and artistic possibilities. This exhibition will explore these challenging times through art created out of moments of frustration, vulnerability, strength, hope, and gratitude. Moving Art: Natural Analog/ues 8th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl Film and Video Exhibition ONLINE PREMIERE

Monday, November 8 7pm “Nature of and in the space” As quarters became closer and social connections dissolved, artists looked outward to forge new relationships with their local environments, both urban and wild alike. Boats that disappear in a torus of mist, the geometry of dissolution and demolition, bird song and the built environment, a meditation on light, 1000 different ducks, a calendar and a calendar of urine jars. This year’s selections reflect an ecological aesthetic theory that weighs our inherent love of nature against the tension of human progress to celebrate its tenuous balance in art.

Talking Art November 9–11

To mark 25 years of the Eastside Culture Crawl, this year’s Talking Art series focuses on a prime mover of Crawl art practices: exploration. In the first night of three panels, member artists talk about their works that begin with research into social histories. The second night is devoted to artists' works that explore physical material from their direct surroundings. On the final night artists share their journeys into the business of making a living through making.

Art Happens Here Many of us turn to art in times of uncertainty, and we know that the Culture Crawl holds a significant place in the hearts of the Vancouver community. This one-of-a-kind festival turns 25 this year and we have a goal to raise $25,000 in 2021 to support art happening here for decades to come.

connects art lovers with more than 500 artists, crafts people, and designers. Beyond the Culture Crawl festival, the Eastside Arts Society (EAS) provides professional development opportunities for artists, and arts education for youth through Studio 101, an initiative that explores the arts with students from inner city schools.

Your donation helps bring our community together through art and supports initiatives that keep our neighbourhood vibrant through events such as the Eastside Culture Crawl and the CREATE! Arts Festival.

For the Culture Crawl’s 25th anniversary, we are thrilled to be building on last year’s successes and continue to deliver safe and innovative programming to provide much needed and valued opportunities to connect artists with the public. In addition to our cherished Culture Crawl, the EAS has also developed a summer art-making festival, CREATE! Arts Festival, and continues our work to make the Eastside Arts District a reality. Through our expanded programming, we remain focused on supporting, protecting, and celebrating the visual artists who have forged the unique and cherished creative cultural ecology of East Vancouver we all know and love.

If you're an East Van craft beer and Culture Crawl lover, make sure to join us for our seventh annual tour and fundraiser in July 2022!

Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s Art, Bike, Beer, Crawl Tote & Tour fundraiser in support of the Eastside Arts Society and its programming! We may not have been able to get together and do a group tour of our local breweries this year, but we were very happy to have offered up the next best thing: a delicious tote bag of tasty beers, kombucha & treats and a lovely do-it-yourself tour map of some of East Vancouver’s amazing public art! We also auctioned off a stunning collection of Art Growlers generously crafted and donated by Crawl artists. The Art, Bike, Beer Crawl fundraiser helps support the Eastside Arts Society’s initiatives promoting local arts and culture through community engagement. Studio 101 Studio 101 is an Eastside Arts Society program dedicated to supporting diverse and engaging artistic experiences for Vancouver’s inner-city youth. Many Eastside schools are designated as inner-city and have limited exposure to professional artists and arts experiences beyond the classroom. Studio 101 brings school children into participating Eastside Culture Crawl artist studio spaces for free, hands-on workshops. For many participants, it is their first time connecting with professional artists. The program provides students insights into the various phases of the creative process, while promoting creative confidence and fostering an appreciation of the visual arts. This year, in order to adhere to provincial health guidelines, the program will take place both online, where students will be sent a workshop kit with all the required supplies and the workshops will be delivered by Crawl artists safely via video conferencing, and in-person small group visits to artists’ studios for workshops that will comply with all current public health and safety protocols.

Photos: Jodie Ponto

Elementary students from grades 4-7 from Britannia Elementary, Seymour Elementary, Strathcona and Xpey’ Elementary schools will take part in workshops to create photographic works, ceramics, textile arts and mixed media items. Studio 101 is coordinated by Matthew Holmstrom, Grace Lee, Laura Morrison and Erin Frizzell. The program was conceived in 2007 by longtime Crawl artists Mira Malatestinic, Richard Tetrault and Kathryn Youngs, and is proudly supported by the Eastside Arts Society, Herschel Supply Co., Ruth Scheuing in memory of Michael Lawlor and Opus Art Supplies.
