Scavo Glass Miniatures

Spring-Summer 2013 Wholesale Catalog

Miniatures

Greetings ! We’re a family owned glass-blowing studio specializing in the lost art of Scavo, and we’re proud to introduce our new line of ScavoGlass Miniatures. Our little hand-blown pieces are a great addition to any Glass Collection! We started blowing these unique small-scale vessels as color studies for our larger Ikebana Vases, but they became so popular that we’ve turned them into an exclusive line of their own. The Miniatures are difficult to form using our non-traditional techniques and take almost as long to complete as a larger vessel, but they’re so much fun to make that we love doing them. Here’s a little information about the techniques we use that make our Scavo Glass so distinctive, followed by our Spring-Summer 2013 line-up.

–Roger & Trevor Crosta, Glassblowers

One-of-a-Kind

When it comes to handmade, we set the bar high. Most glass and ceramic art on the market is reproduced using molds or high-production techniques, but not ours! When we say Scavo Glass Miniatures are hand-made and one-of-a-kind, we mean just that. We create each piece start to finish, without the use of molds or casts, then grind and sign the bottom of everyone, so you know it’s made by hand. We’ve learned how to replicate our special shapes without using molds or tools, so that while each piece is similar in shape and form, it’s also slightly different. It’s that subtle difference that gives our work it’s added value as an object of art. It takes a little longer, and our production will always remain limited, but to us, it’s worth it, because we love what we do!

Selling Our Work

Pricing: Of all the Scavo Glass items we’ve created, our Miniature Vessels have been the most popular by far. We designed this wholesale line specifically for easy selling at a retail price point of $125.00, based on several years of experimenting with pricing at shows, in galleries, and in high-end home furnishing & gift shops. The vessels sell extremely well at that uniform price, no matter what shape or color they are. We offer them at a 50% wholesale discount for $62.50 with a 6-piece minimum. Display: Displaying our work is easy. The Miniatures sell better in the open so customers can get close to them, rather than enclosing them in a case or recessed area–they are exceptionally durable and don’t break easily. We’ve also created a line of beautiful gift boxes to enhance the buying experience and make the vessels desirable as a gift purchase. They’re available as an option on the order form, and come in random colors and patterns we match to the each Vessel.

The Scavo Process

We are experts in Scavo, and very proud of our work! Here’s how we do it: Scavo means Unearthed in Italian and involves sifting a mix of organic compounds onto the surface of the miniature while forming it, allowing it to eat into the glass. The finished piece is annealed, cured for several days, soaked in water, and scrubbed gently to expose the corroded surface. The result is a vessel that looks as if it’s been dug up after centuries. We spent several years perfecting our exclusive Scavo recipes, and outside of a factory or two in Italy that still offer a few small collections, we are the only private glass art studio devoted exclusively to the Scavo process.

Inside-Out is a technique we use to achieve the roughness and asymmetry that makes our glass so distinctive. The last gather is rolled in various frits, shards, and powders (thus the term Inside Out), which produces a wide variety of colors and textures that remain exposed on the final surface. The rough, uneven exterior alters the elasticity of the molten glass and increases the effectiveness of the Scavo, giving our vessels a highly unique look and feel, much like a ceramic object. Scavo Glass Miniatures are very different from any other glass art on the market and stand out in any retail setting.

Non-Tocare (Hands-Off in Italian) means that all our glass is blown without the use of traditional glassblowing tools. When Scavo is applied to a vessel in progress, the use of tools to shape the piece will spoil the effect, so with the exception of jacks (used to form the neck), each piece is shaped using only gravity, breath, and centrifugal force. No tools can touch the surface of the glass or the piece is ruined.

Solo Blown! We also blow every vessel Solo–only one of us makes the vessel from start to finish. This ensures that each piece is a unique, one of a kind objet d’art, and all our miniatures are signed by us in the studio.

Spring-Summer 2013 Here is our newest collection of Scavo Glass Miniatures! We’ve created a variety of beautiful colors and finishes for these latest pieces. The blended blues and greens in our Ocean and Aqua miniatures are crisp and refreshing, our Amber and Ruby colors are warm and intimate, and our Celadon Nageiere-style mini makes a perfect bud vase. We’ve also added some new mixes using shards and frits to create our distinctive Bamboo, Granite, and Fossil series.

Ordering our Scavo Glass Miniature Vessels is easy. We offer four distinctive shapes and twelve different colors, all listed individually on the order form. We’ve also included a series of suggested collections to help you visualize your order, and a grid of every individual vessel shape and color with the corresponding item number listed below. You do not have to order a full collection–any shape or color vessel may be ordered individually to reach the minimum order of 6 vessels.
