The theme verse chosen by this year’s senior class encourages us to “set our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people” and to be an “example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (I Timothy 4:10, 12) In many of our chapel services this fall, we’ve explored what it means to set our hope in God our Savior and to set an example in all we do and say for fellow believers and for those outside the faith. In this issue of CUI Magazine, we thank our friends and donors for their commitment to the Christian mission of Concordia University and for the example they’ve set for all of us. Their faithful and generous support of Concordia makes such a difference in the lives of students, many of whom could not afford to attend Concordia without considerable financial assistance.

Cake-maker Extraordinaire F
rom a bright and airy bakery in Orange County, CUI alum Lindsey Sinatra ’07 has become one of the premiere cake-makers in California.
“My cakes are whimsical and have a lot of movement and small detail to them,” Sinatra says. “I’m known for the diversity and the fun nature of my cakes. They can be anything from a beautiful fashion cake to a fun, sculpted giraffe.” Sinatra has made spectacular cakes for movie premieres, celebrity birthday parties and many other special occasions. Her work has been featured on TV shows such as Food Network’s “The Challenge” and WE’s “Amazing Wedding Cakes.”
“I’ve gotten into projects and not known what I was undertaking, but that’s part of the challenge,” she says. “You’re never doing the same thing. I’m in it for the fun of figuring out how we’re going to do it. Every week is a new challenge. I’m happy I discovered cakes because it’s such a social job.”
Drawn to CUI Sinatra was attending a community college when she discovered CUI through her sister’s recommendation. “I toured the campus and was really drawn to it,” she says. She enrolled and “loved my experience at Concordia, especially campus life. I really enjoyed my

friends and activities. I was a peer advising leader where you lead freshmen orientation. I had really good professors in the art, English and psychology departments. It was the perfect school for me.”
“I’d never seen cake art before and I flipped out,” she says. “I have always loved cooking but didn’t want to be stuck in a hot line in a kitchen. This was the perfect combination of food and art.”
She was passionate about art, but wondered if she could make a career of it. That led to a defining moment with CUI professor Niclas Krüger.
The next day Sinatra showed up at the winning bakery, which happened to be local, to find out how to break into the industry. She brought her art portfolio from one of her classes at CUI and was offered an internship on the spot.
“Professor Krüger took a strong interest in my art and very much encouraged me as an artist,” she says. “He helped me with my confidence. I always thought my art was cutesy and not serious, but he said that it has whimsy and tells a story like children’s literature. He said I should think toward children’s literature and illustration. That gave my art more of a purpose. He helped me find who I am as an artist.” Sinatra looked into becoming an art teacher or doing art therapy for children but kept being drawn back to her first love: 3-D art. In the middle of her senior year at CUI she saw a show called “The Challenge” on the Food Network where competitors have eight hours to create a cake.
“It was completely amazing because within two days I’d gotten what I wanted,” she says. “It became the passion of my life.” While finishing her degree at CUI she went to work at 4:30 a.m., then attended classes and went back to work from 2 to 7 p.m. Nights were spent working on her senior portfolio. “I was taking eighteen units and working five days a week, but I was so stoked on life,” she says. “Being busy gave me energy because I loved it.” For five years she learned everything she could about baking, decorating cakes and running a small business.
Then she launched out on her own and A Wish and a Whisk was born. “It was terrifying,” she says. “I was making cakes out of rented commercial kitchen space or bakeries that would let me use their kitchens at night when they were closed. My car was basically a running bakery.”
Story-telling through cakes But the skills learned studying sculpture at Concordia translated well to cakes, she says. She decided she would be a specialist, making cakes by appointment only, no retail or walk-ins. And she would focus solely on cakes — no cookies, brownies or dessert stations. Within months she was hired to make a 6-foot long Paris Opera House replica cake for the closing of the world tour of Phantom of the Opera in Los Angeles. Three weeks later she was hired to create a 10-foot-tall cake for the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in New York. Both gigs came from television exposure. A Wish and a Whisk had competed twice on “The Challenge” and Sinatra had appeared on the Food Network with her previous bakery. Now she faced a tall order. “They gave me a picture of a cake from the Harry Potter movie and said, ‘Replicate this,’” she says. “I was completely unprepared for it. I was scrambling. They gave me ten days to make it and get it to New York City.”
“I enjoy the thrill of seeing it come together and the fact that you’re giving it to someone to celebrate a big moment in their life. It has such a purpose.” Since then, A Wish and a Whisk has churned out specialty cakes, each unique, for everything from weddings to corporate events. “I enjoy the thrill of seeing it come together and the fact that you’re giving it to someone to celebrate a big moment in their life. It has such a purpose,” Sinatra says. “A cake becomes a showpiece for that wedding or event. People love taking pictures with it, talking about it and eating it. I hear from clients, ‘People talked about my cake more than my wedding.’” A Wish and a Whisk moved into its own bakery in 2011, a shop full of windows and a skylight which brings natural
She created a steel and plexiglas structure, built the cake around it, packed it in pieces on a truck in dry ice and sent it to New York. The cake took nine buckets of fondant (a kind of cake icing). “They loved it,” she says. “It was right in the center of the room.”

“My cakes tell a story. That ties back to the art I did at Concordia.” light into the workspace so Sinatra and her employees can see true color when they work. The atmosphere is usually “six laughing girls,” she says. “I’m very picky,” says Sinatra. “I hire happy, spirited girls who are not competitive and who work as a team.” Before starting on a cake, she sits with a client for an interview, learning key details such as how a bride and groom met, or favorite hobbies. “My cakes tell a story,” she says. “I try to involve aspects of my clients and represent them as much as possible. That ties back to the art I did at Concordia. I find out what’s significant about this person’s life or this couple’s relationship and try to hide little elements of their story in the cake.” A wedding cake she made last year bore a number of tastefully hidden elements: a globe with two suitcases, golf clubs hidden in the flower arrangements and a film reel to symbolize that the couple had met at film school. “It’s not in-your-face obvious,” Sinatra says. “It looks like a wedding cake, but when you get closer you see these things.” Her cakes are labor-intensive, requiring 25 to 85 hours and costing as much as $16,000. She sketches the cake in pencil, outlines the sketch in black pen and finishes in watercolor and colored pencils. Fine elements, called “sugar details,” are made ahead of time out of sugar paste which has the consistency of Play-Doh but dries quickly as hard as a jawbreaker.
The cakes themselves are made of Italian merengue buttercream with whipped egg whites, heated sugar and butter. Cakes are refrigerated and pulled out for an hour or two at a time to be shaped and covered with details.
Unlike some decorative cakes, Sinatra’s actually taste good. “To me, if your cake doesn’t taste good I don’t see the point in creating it,” she says. “I take a lot of time and pride myself in my cakes tasting really good. They are all made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients. All my flavors are spins on classic comfort flavors.” Sinatra was hired to create 300 mini-cakes for the NBCtelevised ninetieth birthday of Golden Girl Betty White at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. “I got called by General Mills with less than two weeks’ notice,” she says. “We had to match their very specific colors. I only had two employees at the time and we did an assembly line and plowed through it. Everyone I knew was in here the last days painting pearls and boxing cakes. It was a lot of fun.” Sinatra says she has done just what she was aiming for when she started A Wish and a Whisk: “I’m living what I was going for. I’m not looking to achieve some TV show. I just wanted to have a successful bakery where I could create my cakes, so I’m really quite happy.”
Profs’ podcast goes viral CUI’s Dr. Jeffrey Mallinson ’96, associate professor of theology, and Dr. Dan van Voorhis ’02, chair of the History and Political Thought Department, created a podcast in July. Within weeks it gained national attention and thousands of listeners. “The response was overwhelmingly positive,” says van Voorhis. “In the first two months we had over 10,000 downloads just through word of mouth. We have listeners in all 50 states and 42 countries.” The podcast, called Virtue in the Wasteland, tackles popular topics from a Lutheran perspective. “I’d long wanted to capture the really good banter that happens between academics and friends,” says Mallinson. “I teach theology and we’re often in our own little world preaching to the choir.” Says van Voorhis, “We were complaining that all we do is talk to each other. Why aren’t we talking about things in the public square?”
An opportunity to do just that opened up when Mallinson became the director of a ministry called Faithful Masks. The first thing he did was create an hour-long weekly podcast. The first one, recorded at his house, took on the subject of evil. Instead of the typical fifty or so listeners for the average podcast, theirs received hundreds and then thousands of listeners. For about a month Virtue in the Wasteland was featured on the New and Noteworthy section at the iTunes Store and appeared on the main iTunes podcast page. In the sub-categories for philosophy, history and religion it has been in the top ten. “As professors we want to use our knowledge and bring it into the public square,” says van Voorhis. “We want to make people feel comfortable talking about what we think is lost: the art of excellence, being a good neighbor, and virtue.” Upcoming episodes will be recorded with live audiences and feature, among other guests, an ultimate fighter who does humanitarian work in the Congo. he CUI psychology department helps a significant number of students go on to graduate school. One of the department’s professors, Dr. Roberto Flores de Apodaca, left a tenured position at a large state school so he could invest in students’ lives more directly at CUI. Flores also enriches his classroom teaching with his ongoing experiences as a forensic psychologist, evaluating defendants in criminal cases in Southern California. “Coming to Concordia was probably the best professional decision I ever made,” says Flores. “I’ve been really happy. It integrated my work and personal life a lot better. I’m working in an environment surrounded by fellow Christians. It’s the most open-minded and truly free academic environment I’ve ever been familiar with. It feels like I’m involved in mission work in my professional practice and there isn’t this disconnect I had previously.” Flores had achieved a coveted tenured position at Cal State Long Beach when he felt increasing professional dissatisfaction. “My personal life and professional life were not completely in sync,” he says. “I was in a secular humanist-oriented institution. In a department of 35, I was the only Christian and the only political conservative. I would put the blinders on and go home.” His kids and wife were part of a Lutheran school in Orange where Flores met CUI assistant professor Katharine Borst. “Katharine was very encouraging and said, ‘Maybe you should come work for us,’” says Flores. “I discussed it with colleagues and they thought I was crazy. Who leaves a tenured position? But the more I thought about it, the more attractive it became.”
Criminal case expert witness Flores began a new era in his career and brought with him twenty years of experience as a forensic psychologist in California courts. Flores applies his clinical expertise to legal cases where the mental status of an individual is one of the issues being adjudicated. Flores is called in to decide if a defendant is competent to stand trial, or if a psychiatric condition constitutes a total disability requiring government support, or if a parent should have custody of a child given the parent’s past mental problems. He specializes in criminal cases. “Sometimes after fifteen minutes it’s clear they are delusional, out of touch and can’t communicate,” Flores says. “More often it’s 90 minutes and I use medical
records from jail and/or police reports. I have a passionate disinterest in the outcome of cases. You have to be able to disappoint your referral source. You can’t get typecast as pro-defense or pro-prosecution.” Some defendants try to “malinger,” that is present an inaccurate picture of themselves psychologically so they do not have to stand trial. “A couple of things help me in those situations,” Flores says. “Most people who malinger are bad actors. They typically overplay their part. Their fake symptoms are preposterous or completely inconsistent with what’s known of actual mental disorders.” Also helpful is a close familiarity with the Dictionary of Mental Disorders, and examination of mental health records, police reports and even text messages sent to friends and family members. “Forensics work suited me because it’s more of an intellectual task than an interpersonal task like counseling and is very productoriented: you produce a report or testify in court and you’re done. I like that,” says Flores. “It dovetails nicely with my course work at Concordia. One lends to the other. Students like hearing the horror stories of the cases, and teaching psychology helps me with the forensic work.”
“Helping students get where they want to go is by far the most personally rewarding experience I have, and Concordia affords me this so many times over.”
Though most cases are not sensational, the TV show Law and Order based one episode on a case Flores was involved in, in which a high-achieving girl tried to have her twin sister killed. “One thing that’s patently obvious in the criminal world is that the vast majority of folks that go awry, God is absent from their lives. They don’t have a spiritual component,” says Flores. “They don’t consider themselves answerable to a higher order and don’t subjugate their will to a moral and ethical system larger than themselves that’s pre-existing and eternal.”

“Most people who malinger are bad actors. They typically overplay their part. Their fake symptoms are preposterous.”
Psychology professor Dr. Buddy Mendez oversees the internship or practicum requirement where students volunteer to work with autistic children, in abuse shelters and at suicide hotlines and hospitals. That way students can demonstrate that they have done psychological work outside the classroom. Flores’ own contribution is on the research side where he helped develop a two-semester sequence called Advanced Research for students applying to grad school. Students join him in a research project of his choosing and work to make it of publishable quality. They have had unusual success: four projects have now been published and others are under consideration. “I don’t think this is normal for most psych departments,” Flores says, “but it’s one way we’re blessed at CUI: we can apply individual attention. Students in the research course read, annotate and discuss literature, then put together drafts of the paper. By the time we have the paper completed they’ve been involved from start to finish in a sincere effort at a publishable research project.”
Launching students to success Back on campus at CUI, Flores and his colleagues have been diligent in preparing undergraduate students to attend graduate school by giving them opportunities for clinical work and research. “At Concordia we agreed that the bachelor’s degree in psychology is not a terminal degree. You need to go on and get an advanced degree to work in the field,” he says. “The basic pillars of work in psychology are practice and scholarship. We set about trying to offer those kinds of opportunities for our undergraduate majors.”
The department’s efforts to launch students into graduate school have borne much fruit: Last year, 32 students graduated from CUI with a psychology major and 18 went straight to grad school, mostly for programs in social work, counseling and related fields. Flores, who has two sons at Concordia and a daughter in high school, says his greatest satisfaction comes from helping kids “become more focused and confident in what they want to do, and helping them get where they want to go. It is by far the most personally rewarding experience I have, and Concordia affords me this so many times over. That’s where it’s at for me.”
Longtime supporter gives 500th gift
his fall Alfred Neukuckatz, a World War II veteran and retired aerospace electrical engineer, gave his 500th gift to Concordia University Irvine — and he says it won’t be his last. “Once you develop a good habit, it’s beneficial to both sides,” Neukuckatz
says. “That’s what my wife and I did with our giving to Concordia.” Still, Neukuckatz says he didn’t realize how many gifts he and wife Lillian, who passed away in 2012, had given. “We had regular monthly contributions and threw in some
extra ones for the music and theater programs and the like,” he says. “Lo and behold, you do that long enough and you have a reasonable number of contributions.” Neukuckatz calls himself “an immigrant by birth” because he was born in Brazil to missionary parents.
FALL 2013 CUI MAGAZINE
His family returned to the U.S. in 1929 when he was five years old and he attended parochial Lutheran schools, then served in the Army under Gen. George Patton, providing reconnaissance. “Our job was to take high-speed vehicles, light tanks and scout cars and find out where the enemy was,” he says. “Sure enough, we’d find them. Then the shooting would start and we’d try to make an assessment, call back to our divisions and they would move forward.” Neukuckatz was wounded in a skirmish and received a purple heart and a Bronze Star for meritorious service. “I was totally surprised [to get the awards],” he says. “I was just doing my job. I was wounded in my left arm and whoever it was, was a bad shot. A couple of inches over and I’d have had it.” What sticks with him most about the War is the memory of his hospital ship pulling into New York harbor. “There came all the poor guys, no legs, no arms, hobbling to the front of the ship. Guess why? To see her — the Statue of Liberty, a beautiful sight for us,” he says. “I really will never forget it. It gave all of us chills and still does.” His advice to anyone involved in a war: “By all means, try if you can to get on the winning side. It’s very helpful.” He spent the rest of his career working as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry. He and Lillian, whom he had met at a Lutheran youth meeting, moved to California in 1967, joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Orange and have been members ever since, serving as a

It was a marvelous experience to watch Concordia grow. We would attend meetings and there would be another building coming up, now more staff, expanding our curriculum, more students. We watched it all. It’s like a small miracle.” As active supporters, Al and Lillian ushered for campus concerts and sang in the community choir for years. Al even tuned the campus pianos in the 1980s in his second career as a piano tuner. And they always made their monthly gift.
Over time, the number of their donations added up. “I was surprised when I heard about it,” Al says. “I hadn’t thought about it that way. I went to my calculator and did some calculations and said, ‘Yeah, it could happen.’” Neukuckatz was honored by CUI president Kurt Krueger in a chapel service in September. “That was so nice,” Neukuckatz says. “I was embarrassed almost to tears and when he finished I gave a few words of wisdom, I hope, to the students. I appreciated the recognition immensely. I was overwhelmed and so moved by the entire experience that I got home and wrote another check for $500 as a thanksgiving for what they had said.” Neukuckatz says he continues to give and is encouraging his greatgrandchildren to attend CUI.
Students Cecilia Eiroa Uedo ’15 (right) and Grace Chong ’15 with Dr. John Kenney doing lab work at CUI. A new physics major is being launched this year.
Physics major joins CUI’s science offerings The Natural Science division at CUI is rolling out a new major: physics. “The physics major complements all the other majors we have in the Natural Sciences division,” says Dr. Bret Taylor, professor of mathematics and chair of the Natural Science division. “It examines the physical forces of nature, from the very small to the very large and investigates them scientifically and mathematically.” Dr. John Kenney says he has been
“continuously planning and praying about” the physics major since he was hired twelve years ago. Physics, he says, is “the fundamental science. It probes at the deepest questions of how things are made, how they work, why they work and what laws are there.” On a practical level, physics is much-needed in today’s workforce. Graduates can go on to careers in medicine, technology development and research. “There is a growing need for medical physicists who understand ultrasound, nuclear technology and radiation technologies,” says Kenney. “Anything with imaging is very physics-intensive.”
As with biology, chemistry and mathematics, students will receive “hands-on, eyes-on science,” building and operating equipment, conducting experiments and publishing results — “Not just learning about physics, but being physicists,” says Kenney. The major will also integrate, as the other science courses do, theology and faith. “We believe there is a single truth and God makes himself known to us through His Word and His world. We try our very best to see how this fits together,” says Taylor. Kenney says members of the theology faculty are “extremely excited to bring physics into the cui news, continued on page 14

fold because we can really have a meaningful dialogue between science and theology through physics.” This is year one of a four-year rollout for the new major. Students will start with calculus-based physics and honors astronomy. “We are intentionally and systematically recruiting for this major,” Kenney says. “The sciences are booming at Concordia.”
CUI offers first doctoral degree CUI received approval in July to launch its first-ever doctoral program, a 3-year doctor of education degree (Ed.D.) for leaders and administrators in public schools, private schools and colleges. In creating the new program, CUI also became a doctoral degree-granting institution for the first time in its history, an accreditation status which will open the door to other doctoral degrees in the future. “With this new degree we will produce ethical leaders with a deep understanding of management and leadership skills who will re-shape American education,” says Dr. Dwight Doering, executive director of the Doctor of Education Program. “This is an applied learning doctorate, most certainly. Our activities are geared toward how they can utilize the knowledge and skills they learn here and apply that to the real world.” CUI’s new Ed.D. program is designed to help students complete the doctorate and not stall out at the dissertation stage as many students do. Dissertation preparation is integrated into the curriculum from
day one and dissertation research is threaded through the coursework. “As students are taking content courses, they will also be taking courses on a dissertation track,” says Doering. “They will build up the knowledge base they need to become experts in that area. In most programs, students finish research and content courses and then delve into their dissertation work. Ours offers what is basically a streamlined dissertation track.” It also offers a “blended design” of online and in-person learning involving traditional classroom settings and synchronous and asynchronous online education with professors and fellow students. “We recognize that technology is driving many changes, and that’s true in education as well,” says Doering. “In CUI’s program, students become comfortable with a wide variety of modalities of learning.”
The first cohort begins in January 2014. The Ed.D. enhances the offerings of the School of Education, which already is highly regarded in the community, and moves CUI as an institution to a higher level of accreditation. To offer a doctoral degree, schools must apply for a structural change with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. CUI completed this application process successfully in July and became a doctorate-granting institution, making it easier for CUI to offer doctoral degrees in other fields of study.
Bike loan program soars in popularity CUI students without cars on campus have a new way to get around town: free bicycles on loan from the residential education and services (RES) department.
The new bike loan program, called CU Rides, started the first day of classes in August and proved so popular that the fleet already has grown from four to ten bikes. Every bike has been checked out every day, says Scott Keith, director of RES and an avid cyclist who was inspired by the bike-share programs he observed in London. He and a CUI grad intern studied other universities and came up with CU Rides. “There are bike paths all over,” Keith says. “Irvine is rated a top ten bike city in the U.S.” Students check out bikes to run errands, go to the gym or just take a recreational ride. Bikes come with helmets, baskets and locks. The loan period is 24 hours and standard return time is 10 a.m. the following day. “It’s amazing to me how well it has been received,” Keith says. “It’s a great program.” Joshua Stockton, a sophomore studying psychology, checks out a bicycle three times a week to ride to the gym. “Last year I ran to the gym four miles away, worked out and ran back,” he says. Riding there gives him a way to save time and enjoy areas off campus. The free bike loan program also offers basic repairs for bikes students own. Two staff members serve as part-time bicycle technicians. “I’m excited for the bike shop aspect to take off so we can help students who have a bike on campus with a flat tire or a bike that has stopped shifting,” says Keith. “They can get their bikes in order so they can be used.” Keith says only a handful of other smaller campuses in the country have free bike loan programs. CU Rides
joins the Hertz-On-Demand hourly car rental program that has been available to students for one year.
Residence halls create learning communitiess This fall, CUI launched four unique residential communities to create an experience where students and professors interact outside the classroom and students enjoy greater opportunities for learning right where they live. The newly re-purposed residence halls, called living-learning communities or LLCs, house 40 to 50 students who applied to live there based on a common interest: the Global Village dorm is for students interested in global studies; Holos House is for students wanting to emphasize healthy living in body, mind and soul; WINGS is for students seeking greater help transitioning to college life; and CUI
Bono is concerned with life’s big questions. In each living learning community, a professor and the professor’s family are living among students for the academic year, providing an element of family and personal interaction uncommon for most college students. The goal, says director of residential education and services Scott Keith, is for everyday interaction between students, professors and professors’ families to provide a deeper, more transformative influence that goes beyond the classroom. “Students are happier to be part of your institution if you are able to provide accessible ways for students and faculty to interact outside the classroom,” Keith says. “An LLC provides a place where students feel that they intrinsically belong and that engages them co-curricularly in an interest of theirs.” CUI founding president Dr. Charles Manske says students come to college cui news, continued on page 16

from a family, then graduate, marry and return to a family situation.
We’re like a family. Everybody is there to support you.”
“The college experience is not a vacation from family living where you can sow your wild oats,” Manske says. “There ought to be a Christian example of a professor, and the professor’s children and spouse, and how they learn to live and interact with other people in a Christian way. Students better understand their responsibility to live for God and for others when they see a family living in their residential unit with the values of love, forgiveness, acceptance of correction, all done under God’s love and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That’s what changes people’s lives, when you see that working out in the life of a professor.”
Scott Keith, who was in charge of developing the new living-learning communities, started by identifying existing groups of interest on campus such as the Global Citizens club and CUI Bono, an academic society. That led to the formation of residence halls specifically for students with those interests.
Student Christopher Thorne, a sophomore majoring in psychology, says his interest was piqued when he learned that his favorite professor and family would be living in the Global Village LLC dorm. “We were signing up for places to live and I thought, ‘That looks really cool,’” says Thorne. “When I heard that Dr. Mallinson was going to live here, I was excited. I get to meet his family, see how they are. I know I’ll learn a lot from this.” Max Redeker, a freshman from St. Louis who is living in the Holos House residence hall, likes running three miles before class and mountain biking. “I love Holos House,” Redeker says. “I want more knowledge and a better mindset about what is healthy and unhealthy. I’m hoping to come out of Holos House in better shape than I came in. They hold a lot of events about how to stay healthy. They put you on the right track of eating right.
Faculty’s reaction has been positive, he says. “The faculty living on campus are exceptionally excited about being here,” says Keith. “It’s caught on like wildfire. My wife and I have lived on campus for almost a year. It’s been an incredible experience. I’ve gotten to know the students so much better and look forward to sharing that experience with the current faculty in residence as they learn what it’s like to live on a college campus again and open your home and your lives to students.” The broader effect, says Keith, is creating a “truly residential campus” with ample opportunity for staff and faculty to serve as direct, positive influences on the lives of the students. This will enrich the college experience for everyone, improve academic results and retention and bond graduates to their alma mater, creating a stronger alumni community, he says.
CUI enrollment hits landmark CUI’s student population passed 4,000 for the first time in its history this fall, compared with 3,500 one year ago.
“It’s a huge jump,” says associate provost Peter Senkbeil. “We are experiencing explosive enrollment at Concordia Irvine.” Undergraduate growth is up more than ten percent over last year, to just under 1,600. There has been even greater growth in graduate and adult education programs where 320 new students were added. CUI’s largest adult and graduate programs are the master’s degree in education and the master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration. “We’re doing a lot of new things and seeing a lot of good things happen. It’s not just one program seeing this growth,” says Senkbeil. “Our graduate programs continue to have momentum. People like the programs and speak highly of them. On the undergraduate side this is our fourth year doing the Core and word has gotten out. What we’re hearing from admissions counselors is that students are choosing to come here for the Core. They want that academic rigor.” CUI added 12 new faculty to accommodate growth in the undergraduate, adult and graduate programs, including faculty for the new Ed.D. program in the School of Education (see related story). “It is amazing and humbling to see how God is working at Concordia University with these new enrollment records,” said Gary McDaniel, chief enrollment officer at CUI. “What a gift and privilege to have the opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with so many.”
Alums power National Youth Gathering Every three years, young people from Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod (LCMS) churches and colleges gather for a National Youth Gathering, a week of service, worship and edification. For the last three Gatherings, CUI has provided many members of the big event’s music and production teams.

“The National Youth Gathering is a place to get exposed to the worship arts at a high standard of production,” says Jon Jordening, director of contemporary worship arts at CUI. “They can carry that standard with them to their own churches and colleges.” This July, 20,000 people attended the gathering at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas. Nine members of the house band were students or alums of CUI. Other CUI alums and students worked behind the scenes as tech assistants, in production and in charge of things like projected lyrics and images that appeared on screens during the services. The house band met for three days before the Gathering to learn fifty songs to a performance-ready level. “In an environment like that you have to know the songs inside and out,” says Jordening. “Our students and alums were exposed to technologies they might not normally work with like in-ear monitors, click-tracks running in your ears, talk-back mics, people shouting out what’s happening next and saying, ‘Let’s vamp that section, elongate it, or do a coda.’ It allows them to experience production at a high level and to see there is a responsibility that goes along

played the acoustic guitar in the band. “Every year it’s a lot of work, but as it gets closer and the music and scripts come together, you can see how you’re contributing,” he says. “Students and alums get to walk away knowing they used their gifts for something greater than themselves, and that’s a huge, huge deal.”

Teaching in Hungary
rowing up in Denver, Sarah Berta-Somogyi ’07, M.Ed. ’11 dreamed of teaching in a Lutheran school. Today she does just that — as a missionary in Hungary. “Hungary’s religious schools are state-funded and have students from different religious backgrounds,” BertaSomogyi says. “There is a mission field there. In the classes I teach, I have the opportunity to share the Gospel through Bible verses, songs, film clips and more.” Berta-Somogyi’s path to Hungary began at CUI when assistant professor Katharine Borst ’88 convinced her to go on a short-term mission trip to Hungary to put on a vacation Bible school camp.
“I wasn’t sure I wanted to go but Prof. Borst said, ‘You’re coming with us,’” says Berta-Somogyi. “To have her encourage me that way was a huge thing.” Berta-Somogyi was so affected by the trip that she returned to Hungary with CUI the following year. “My heart was in this place,” she says by Skype from Gyor (pronounced Djyer), a city of 128,000 people, many employed in an Audi factory. “I feel like I found the place that God prepared for me. I really love the people. I like the slower pace of life. I fit here.” For the last five years she has served as an LCMS missionary in the same school she visited on her first CUI mission trip. She teaches English to 180 junior high and high school students. She also married a fellow teacher, a Hungarian.
“The professors [at CUI] are some of the best I’ve ever come in contact with. I appreciated their knowledge and their caring attitudes toward students.”
Berta-Somogyi says she loved her time at CUI, where she attended on a full Presidential Honor’s Scholarship and earned an English degree, a teaching credential and a master’s degree. “I got involved in so many different groups and loved the people I met,” she says. “I was involved in music, intramurals and student government and was the international missions coordinator for a year. I loved getting other students excited about missions and Bible studies on campus. The professors are some of the best I’ve ever come in contact with. I appreciated their knowledge and their caring attitudes toward students.” The connection with CUI remains strong. CUI’s handbell choir has visited Gyor on tour, and last year the Aroundthe-World Semester® program spent two weeks in BertaSomogyi’s school teaching a Bible-based curriculum. “My passions came together here,” says Berta-Somogyi.

Alum business makes moving easier When a pink truck with a pig’s face on the side pulls into your neighborhood, it can only mean one thing: Someone just hired Piggy Boxes, the reusable plastic moving box company founded by Jamie and Todd Lohr ’09. “Having worked for the Irvine Company doing property management and apartment leasing while attending Concordia, I thought reusable moving boxes was an interesting concept. I was familiar with the moving process,” says Todd. “We did some research and Jamie and I looked at each other and said, ‘Why not do this?’” They launched the business in 2012, renting reusable plastic moving boxes for an easier and more eco-friendly moving experience than what people get with cardboard boxes. Piggy Boxes delivers boxes to a customer’s current home and, when he or she is done moving, Piggy Boxes picks them up. They have rented close to 10,000 boxes in under two years.
Most of their business comes from online searches. “We hope to catch people before they go to U-Haul or Lowe’s and fill their car up with cardboard boxes,” he says. Todd had “a great experience at Concordia. I found my wife there and was exposed to the network of the business community. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t gone there.” Todd’s major was business management and Jamie’s was marketing, which came in handy when deciding how to brand their business. “We chose pink to stand out from the competition,” Todd says. “Our truck is pink, I wear pink, our dolly is pink. We wanted an image that people would laugh at, so we came up with a pig. People laugh but it also prompts them to ask, ‘What’s going on?’ That gives us a chance to say, ‘Next time you’re moving look at us and see what you think.’”
“We haven’t had any unhappy customers,” Todd says. “We provide a great service and I think people really get that.”

She returned to the U.S. in 2009 and soon after was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “Once you can no longer do normal functions it puts in perspective who you are,” Lesicko says. “The reality is we’re all children of God and He doesn’t judge us on our ability to do something but on our relationship with Him.” Lesicko was a reluctant missionary at first. “I had serious, deep discussions with the Lord that He had surely picked the wrong person,” she says. “I didn’t want to move. I like California and the ocean.” But during a trial month serving in central Asia, God “changed my worldview and my personality. He brought me back to a life of service. n behalf of the entire Concordia University Irvine community, we are pleased to present our 20122013 annual report.
In the past year, Concordia was able to accomplish much, thanks to a record admissions season, fiscally responsible decision making and, of course, the continued financial support of alumni and friends. Among the year’s highlights are: w w w
a flourishing and vibrant student life program programmatic investments to service, mission and study abroad opportunities a renewed dedication to post-graduate experiences, including internship and job placement for our graduates additions in staff and faculty members a reduction in debt
We enjoyed four national championships this year, three in athletics: women’s and men’s volleyball, and women’s softball. Concordia’s forensics and debate program won the overall team sweepstakes at the the National Parliamentary Debate Association’s Championship Tournament, and a team of CUI marketing students won their second straight Lutheran Church Extension Fund national student marketing competition. We sent our second class of Around-the-World® students to points far and wide for an unforgettable experience of service, community, faith building and academic exploration. And our students’ work with the Lutheran Malaria Initiative saw great success in providing bed nets to thousands at risk for malaria world-wide. Concordia also began offering the Joint Degree MAIS/ MBA Program, enabling students to receive two separate diplomas: a Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Our special events have always brought together our loyal friends and new acquaintances. This year’s activities were no exception. In October, our annual Women’s Faith and Friendship Brunch and Boutique, with special guest speaker Candace Cameron Bure, hosted a record attendance with over 400 women. Editor-in-Chief of Gallup, Dr. Frank Newport, addressed 400 local business, community and 24
Annual Report political leaders at the Faith & Business Forum in March. In May, our 11th annual Gala of Stars broke last year’s record in dollars raised. Our endowment grew by more than $2M with the combination of savvy investment strategies, a fruitful market, and the addition of new donations allocated to endowment investments. In the coming months, expect to see significant growth in this area of financial priority. The accompanying graphs and charts depict the success Concordia Irvine is having under the blessing of the Lord. Fiscal year 2014 indicators show the same strength, and we anticipate continued growth and expansion at a steady, manageable pace. With 2012-2013 behind us, the 2013-2014 year seems bright. We continue to envision a school where faithfulness and excellence are pursued in tandem to develop wise, honorable and cultivated citizens. We look to do this with you as our partners, friends, and dedicated supporters. We are grateful for the generous support of so many loyal donors and friends. Gifts of all sizes are very valuable to the University as we train and equip a new generation of students and leaders. Thank you for your gifts of time, talents and treasures on their behalf.

President’s Club The President’s Club supports Concordia’s mission by contributing or pledging annual gifts of at least $1,000 to the Concordia Fund and/or scholarships. The primary goal of the President’s Club is to raise the much needed funding that augments the financial assistance students receive from other sources. President’s Club members lead the annual scholarship gift program that defrays portions of the cost of educating our students. All President’s Club members are also included as Pacesetters.

Cross train your brain.
“The Core really made me think outside of the box and forced me to answer difficult questions, not accepting an ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I don’t care’ answer. It involved a lot of connection-making, which really helped me articulate my responses to difficult questions.”
Education should strengthen your brain, challenge you to ask questions, and build a strong foundation for your future. In Concordia University Irvine’s *nationally recognized Core curriculum, you will learn about God and service to the world through the cross of Christ. You will cross disciplinary boundaries by studying biology with theology, mathematics with philosophy, and history with literature. You will wrestle with questions and concepts of life that have endured across the centuries. You will cultivate sound academic habits and skills that apply across the curriculum, to your future careers, and life. Exercise your mind. Exercise your faith. Cross train your brain.
