INTRODUCTION


The Brazilian tourism sector is recognized as an important generator of job opportunities and income, and contributes to reducing regional and social inequalities in different parts of our territory. Tourism-driven development requires effective cooperation between different social actors. For the purposes of this project, the Ministry of Tourism and Central Unica das Favelas (Central Union of Slums) - CUFA - will play out this role. With the implementation of the project “Professional Youth Training Course for Socio-Economic Integration of the Tourism Workforce� more than 1,000 youth from several underserved areas - Cidade de Deus, Madureira, Complexo do Alemao, e Acari - were trained professionally in different tourism related areas: audiovisual - film and television, fashion and modeling, gastronomy and kitchen assistant, theater arts - production and staging, and lastly, cultural production. When institutions from civil society, such as CUFA, lead professional youth training projects such as this one, in a tourist destination such as Rio de Janeiro, there is a greater chance of constructing a society in which economic development results in an equal distribution of wealth and equal insertion in the labor market. The potential of Brazilian tourism rests in the diversity of our culture, natural beauty, and the numerous activities developed in the framework of this project. These assets make tourism a factor in social, economic and cultural development. The partnership with CUFA has been very successful as it has promoted citizenship and culture for the youth from the periphery, and as a result, enhancing the image of Rio de Janeiro, and opening the possibility of integrating society socially and economically. CUFA - DOING IT OUR WAY


CUFA - The Central Union of Slums - is a nonprofit organization that over its 10 years of history (completed in 2009) has stimulated social inclusion on a national level through different programs ranging from education, culture, recreation, athleticism, and the promotion of citizenship. Among its tasks are the promotion of supplemental education projects aimed at the diffusion of ideas, concepts and methods, stimulating creativity, sensitivity, a critical awareness of Brazilian values, and the interaction of Brazilian cultural diversity. CUFA’s history begins with the union of young people from various favelas, or shantytowns, of Rio de Janeiro who sought places to express their attitudes, questions, or simply their will to live. The perception that through these joint efforts and competencies a better future could be achieved became the mission of one of Brazil’s most active organizations of the third sector. One of the founders of CUFA, rap artist MV Bill, has won numerous awards due to his participation in the Hip Hop movement. In 2004, UNESCO awarded him as one of ten most militant people of the last decade. Another strong reference is rap singer Nega Gizza, who along with her artistic achievements, is known and respected for her commitment and dedication to social causes. Nega Gizza is also director of HUTUZ, the largest Hip Hop festival of Latin America, and produced annually by CUFA. Hip Hop is CUFA’s principal form of expression and serves as an important vehicle for social integration and inclusion.

Being a movement that has been attracting youth from Brazilian ghettos for the last 20 years, and without the support of the media, as each day passes that CUFA grows stronger, winning over admirers from all socio-economic layers, the pejorative label, “the excluded,” finally can be replaced with a positive, self-proclaimed identity. Through a language of their own, CUFA intends to continue spreading awareness and to raise self-esteem to the less privileged of the Brazilian population through this professional youth training project and similar activities in the future to come. Acting as a pole of cultural production, through partnerships, grants and sponsorships CUFA shapes and informs the citizens not only of Rio de Janeiro, but also the other remaining 25 Brazilian states, plus the capital city, Brasilia. Among many other activities developed by CUFA, there are courses and workshops on disk jockeying, break dancing, graffiti art, street basketball, skateboarding, computers, gastronomy, and audiovisual - film and television, among many others. Much of CUFA’s team of professionals are the very graduates of their training workshops, in other words, peoples who come from Rio de Janeiro’s underserved “communities,” and who today serve their communities working on social projects of their own. CUFA stays at the local level. Printing legitimacy to the work of CUFA, it is worth remembering the aforementioned HUTUZ - the single biggest event and exclusive expression of hip hop. Another benchmark of CUFA’s accomplishments is LIIBRA - the international league of street basketball, discovered when youth began improvising the game using a garbage can, and later, the following year, in 2005 won the national championship.

Currently, CUFA, HUTUZ and LIIBRA are unique marks of identity in Brazil, unprecedented initiatives which have been fundamental to the development of new professional segments in the workforce. These initiatives prove that CUFA is abiding by its motto: make a difference, doing it our way!

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA By Celso Athayde The partnership established with the Ministry of Tourism to implement this project is one of the things that pleases me the most. First, because a partnership with a ministry as important as the Ministry of Tourism makes it public that CUFA is moving towards the formation of a Brazilian citizenship by making change happen from within our very own communities, and that joining forces between civil society and public organizations, a better and more dignified life for all can become a reality. Second, because we believe these courses prepare each of our students for a real insertion in the labor market, and this is happening everyday. Personally, I believe that actions involving training is more pertinent to their daily lives, or rather, it is knowledge that they can use and be proud of, becoming part of their heritage. This is a very important achievement for CUFA because the idea of change happening from within favelas goes against the “asphalt culture� (cultura do asfalto), a common notion in mass society, in which knowledge comes from the outside to the favelas, and is not necessarily representative of the perspectives and experience of the communities. And the third reason, and perhaps the one that touches me the most, is the fact that the lives of these students is very much like my own life history and many others I know. They are people who need to see a light at the end of the tunnel. They are people with a thirst for knowledge, for growth and advancement. Now, with professional training, they can take control of their lives and manifest their reality.

I’m positive that these very voices will be heard., maybe out of a special quality gained from the course, or maybe out of a desire to pass on their unique experience to others. And let this be the embryo of actions to come. That this seed germinates and the fruits harvested, and that this desire be in all of us. That’s how it goes!

It was such a great joy to see so many young people receive their certificates of completion. It made every arduous moment worth it. Within them they will carry feelings of renewal and a hope for a better future, an outlook in contrast to the harsh realities of youth from underserved communities. Such a positive outcome shows us how worth it was the time and energy spent on “Professional Youth Training Course for Socio-Economic Integration of the Tourism Workforce.” A change in perspective is living proof of the project’s success. They will take something very valuable which will stay with them for the rest of their lives: the value of knowledge. Not only that, a significant amount of young people who participated in the project did formally enter the labor market while others found a source of income within their very own communities.

THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MINISTRY OF TOURISM


The idea of developing professional training courses for young people from poor communities of Rio de Janeiro came about in 2006 during a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and CUFA. On this occasion the topic of conversation was the upcoming PanAmerican Games and the possibility of receiving support from the Ministry of Tourism to do a joint project with the Central Union of the Slums (Central Unica das Favelas). Other partnerships emerged individually according to specific needs and our demand for quality. These partners were institutions who loaned their physical space for the realization of specific classes (industrial kitchens for our Gastronomy course, for example); market professionals who dedicated their time to the project; and also there were companies which in many ways were fundamental in the execution of the courses. In the CUFA/Ministry of Tourism partnership, the main focus of the project would be youth-training courses aimed at developing tourism in Rio de Janeiro. The focus on tourism came about for two specific reasons: one philosophical and the other technical. The first was because CUFA believed the courses should be in accordance with the demands of the community and within the scope of interest of youth coming from a specific segment of culture that had tourism potential, to become a viable economic activity and as evident in the city. Having worked primarily with the universe of hip hop and street basketball, putting on vocational training courses of this nature was a challenge, a new endeavor. This exemplifies the second reason for undertaking a project such as this. For the identification of the specific contents of the courses we relied on our partners, the Ministry of Tourism, and other social actors.

Instead of “re-inventing the wheelâ€?, we used as a model tourism-related courses that other social projects preoccupied with the training of youth coming from underserved communities had used in their curriculum. Thusly, the main objective of the project was encouraging the development of tourism in Rio de Janeiro by professionally training youth in event production, such as carnival, film festivals, concerts, and such; and to offer them alternatives within the labor market. In this way, contribute to improving the quality and availability of tourism, strengthening cultural identity and diversity of tourist destinations of Rio de Janeiro. The focus of the project was promoting education and stimulating creativity in the context of a vocational training course for youth. Our youth came from four different underserved communities of Rio de Janeiro: Cidade de Deus, Acari, Madureira, and Complexo de AlemĂŁo. We expected 1,200 students to complete their certificates of study and formally enter the tourism workforce. The first set of courses offered were the following: audiovisual, tailoring and sewing; silk screen printing; gastronomy; production of costumes and props for carnival; and cultural production. There were courses on theory, which had to be taken before the practicum. The students worked on cultural production projects such as documentaries and event production, organizing cooperatives, or promoting products and services that had been developed by their very own classmates. The first year of the project was subject to several difficulties. It was clear that the adopted methodology did not reflect the reality of the youth from the selected communities, and therefore it was necessary to develop a curriculum closer to their reality so that the intended goals could be achieved. In this first stage, 150 students were trained.

However, as the General Secretary of CUFA, Celso Athayde, summarizes: “We chose partners to guide the process and to implement the programs in the slums because of their professional expertise, however, one thing is for certain, for social programs in slums to be successful, especially in the communities where we operate, it takes more than a map and guidebook, to really know the slum, one needs to know its alleys, to know the DNA of the people. The solution was not in books, but in our essence. What we needed then was to organize a competent and committed group. It was up to us to either reach failure and depression, either individually or collectively, or to actually achieve our goal. We won. The ‘slum’ has once again proven that the sky is the limit.” Therefore, it was certain that CUFA should take the lead and be responsible for the execution of the project. This was duly justified and accepted by the representatives of the Ministry of Tourism. The following changes were proposed by CUFA: After a careful review of student registration and class enrollment many adjustments to the project were made. In relation to the types of courses offered, for example, more audiovisual and gastronomy classes were added, simply because attendance and truancy results showed more student interest in these two areas. Class schedules were also redefined, according to the availability of the students. In regards to the methodology of the courses, the program content was streamlined toward more emphasis on practice for a more dynamic and stimulating learning environment. On the other hand, some classes were dropped and replaced with others. For example: we decided to replace the class “Carnival Costumes and Prop Design” for “Theater Arts: Production and Staging.” This particular course prepares youth for work in artistic and cultural activities, which in the case of Rio de Janeiro, can be directly linked to tourism, thus

providing a vast array of job opportunities. “Fashion and Modeling” replaced “Tailoring and Sewing,” making the course much more attractive to youth, including specific classes on modeling and hosting tourist events. The offering of snacks during break was re-evaluated to improve class performance and learning curve. After the approval of the proposed reformulated project, Central Unica das Favelas carried out a survey to get input from the community, students, and teachers to update the way the project would be executed. Only with this feedback could the amendments and adjustments of the courses be made. Precisely due to the concern to make the learning experience go beyond the barrier of the classroom, many adjustments and amendments had to be made. Courses targeting concepts of citizenship and teamwork were implemented. There was a visible improvement in the self-esteem of participants, resulting in even changes to their personal lives. Another key change was the need to physically expand the project beyond the initial four sites: Acari, Cidade de Deus, Complexo de Alemão, and Madureira. Even more facilities had to be created: Realengo (Espaço Jorge Ben), Nova Iguaçu, SESC Ramos, SESC Madureira and CEASA. This need was determined by the students themselves, aged 16 to 29, since the distance between work and school impacted both student attendance and progress. In most cases, the students divide their time with other activities and or responsibilities. Therefore, proximity was key to maximum benefit from the course.

With renewed teaching methods and physical expansion, new students were attracted to the courses and attendance and interest ended up exceeding our expectations, totaling more than 700 young people trained in 33 classes. We are certain that the reformulations contributed to our goal of preparing young people for insertion in the job market, in addition to enriching the tourism experience with cultural and artistic events produced by CUFA.

THE EXPERIENCE


Next, we had to figure out how to effectively advertise the course in order to reach our target population. After several meetings, it was decided that advertising would take two forms. In areas where there was a high density of youth, there would be poster announcements, moving vehicles announcing the course, banners on street corners, in addition to theater performances, which attracts a lot of people. The second form was the more traditional: newspaper, radio and television. Another concern was in relation to the advertisements themselves. We did not want to make the mistakes made during the first phase of the project. So what we did is adopt a tree - placed at the top of the favelas - as our mascot. The tree represents the tree of knowledge, of everyone’s capacity to achieve, and the fruits on the tree represent the courses offered. Also, scattered throughout the favelas were signs of the popular tourist attractions of Rio de Janeiro. Then the final result:

Something important that had not been considered before was revealed during the advertising of the course. Although it was strictly aimed at youth from favelas, the project “Professional Youth Training Course for Socio-Economic Integration of the Tourism Workforce� reached beyond these limits. Partly because the courses were free and of quality. But also because in needy neighborhoods projects focusing job readiness for youth are very difficult to find, so naturally there were people from all over Rio de Janeiro, from Rocha Miranda, Coelho Neto, Bangu, Marechal Hermes, and many others, representing up to nearly 50% of the student population.

THE COURSES


In this stage of the project - between 2008 and 2009 - the following professional training courses were offered: Audiovisual - Film and Television, Gastronomy, Fashion and Modeling, Theater Arts - Production and Staging, and Cultural Production, totaling 33 classes and a student enrollment of 987, of which 717 were about to graduate (representing 72,64% of completion). Besides offering professional training courses, many jobs were created, for example there were close to 50 employees, some who were coordinators of the course, others supervisors, teachers, and monitors. Hosted at 10 different sites, the schedule of classes would be the following:

In June, I found out that the project “Professional Youth Training Course for Socio-Economic Integration of the Tourism Workforce” had been accepted and was in its implementation phase. At that point I had been in CUFA for only a month and a half and was working on an audiovisual booklet called “Seeing Slums,” and at the same time, planning the project “Complementary Educational Actions,” both projects linked to the audiovisual portion of CUFA. Looking back at the mistakes I had made as a teacher, now less than a year later, I knew that I had an opportunity to do things differently. One thing is to point out problems, sit back and do nothing, but another is to actually be apart of the process and anticipate problems before they surface. It was the moment of truth, to prove that things could be different, or not. At first, I would be responsible only for the audiovisual portion of the project, given my previous experience, but later at a meeting where I presented some ideas and suggestions for the reformulated projected, it was decided that I would become general manager. Given the magnitude of the project, the administration was seeking someone with experience to coordinate this new stage of implementation. FROM SMALL FISH TO BIG FISH As soon as I started reading the project I instantly remembered something that had bothered me as a teacher during the first stage of the project. The teachers weren’t getting paid the full hour when they taught a 45 or 50 minute class. This is completely wrong as a teacher should be paid the full hour for every 45 or 50 minute class he

or she gives. So I went to my supervisor who said that he would look into this to see if something could be done, and since he never got back to me, never even bring the subject up, I thought it would be best to let the issue go, especially being a “small fish” and all. And more than that, someone who complains too much is always remembered as an annoying person. Life has a funny way of coming back. Well, the small fish grew big and now I couldn’t let a concern such as this go unnoticed. So, when I started planning the project, I calculated the classes as 45 minutes long, which according to the law, is how it has to be. This brought a significant change to the earnings of the teachers, and it was agreed upon among coordination. As CUFA is an organization that puts on events of a large scale, there’s plenty of opportunity for the students to acquire valuable work experience. If a student has difficulty finding an internship externally, he can very well intern at a CUFA event, gaining experience, raise selfesteem and improve the resume. Students, working together with the Production Coordination responsible for events such as HUTUS (International Hip Hop Festival), Cine CUFA (Film Festival), LIIBRA (International Street Basketball League), among others, are able to learn first hand what it takes to be in their area. Students of Cultural Production, for example, actually help put on major events; students of Modeling may work in the reception greeting the guests; of Fashion, may design and produce tshirts; of Audiovisual - Film and Television, film and photograph; of Gastronomy, be responsible for the opening and closing night

buffet; and of Theater Arts - Production and Staging, put on performances for an artistic dynamic to the event. Even after all this exposure through CUFA, it is necessary for the student to expand his network and compete in the formal labor market. This is a difficult task because not only do they lack the proper formal education to equally compete in the labor market, but also having access to a regular job is a reality far removed from their own because job opportunities are few and far in between.

THEATER ARTS: PRODUCTION AND STAGING


Our Theater Arts course aims to shape not only actors, but artists with the ability to put on their own shows, from inception to premier, and all the theatrical elements in between (scenery, costumes, lighting and sound, among others). Even more than that, they deeply understand the text that is being interpreted and its effect on the audience. We emphasize to our students the importance of having a strong connection with one’s audience because it is in this way that one’s work is a vehicle for the expression of feelings, thoughts and notions that our often hidden in day to day life. Four classes graduated from the Theater Arts course. They came from the communities of Complexo de Alemão, Cidade de Deus, and Madureira. They exceeded our expectations! More than entertainment, theatrical training develops self-esteem, communication techniques, and ignites interest in knowledge. The students presented their work at events such as CUFA CRI (in celebration of Children’s Day), Favela Day (for the inauguration of the Manguinhos base), along with student participation in the Hutuz Hip Hop Awards and CUFA Film Festival. TESTIMONYS FROM BLOGS: The following blogs are in their original content and form to preserve the authenticity and opinion of the authors. October 11, 2008 OCTOBER 11, 2008 TOURISTIC CHILDREN’S DAY! Saturday, October 11, 2008: it’s the eve of Children’s Day…. A common day? NO WAY!!! After a very busy week, Saturday turned out radiant. I have no idea how many children were underneath the Negrão de Lima overpass. It could have been 300 or more. But it doesn’t matter because I know for sure that all of them lived out their dreams! Music, dance, basketball, skate boarding, theater, storytelling, face painting, fun picture taking, snacks, lunch, a huge cake, DJ, cultural entertainment, a fashion show…. Wow, so many cool activities! But hold on! Who was behind all these activities? Who took care of all these kids? Here lies the key to success, of happiness…. Students, teachers, the coordinators from Gastronomy, Cultural production, Fashion and Modeling, Audiovisual, Theater Arts, and even CUFA alumni participated!!!! Youthful adults and all very close to one another composed this cast of characters -- with their eyes shining bright, jumping and giving more hugs than the children! Not to say that the kids weren’t radiant as well! I am sure that each one went home with thousands of stories to tell, igniting a response as bright and satisfied as those actually present on this day. And now I want to tell mine: a theater story…. The students from the

Ramos Underpass Theater Arts class were volunteers, so they arrived very early dressed up as clowns and other characters to greet the children and have fun with them… But soon after, anxiety set in with the costume change for the afternoon presentation: concentration, lack of hunger, hands trembling, all very common… but what wasn’t, was the beauty and enchantment that the show ignited in the kids watching the show, “Bedtime Stories Our Way.” The students put on an amazing show! When they came together in the classroom after the applause had ended, in a circle they all cried, both girls and boys, saying how happy they were with their first presentation on stage, how much each one had helped the other, and how important each one was to the other. After all, for several days (from Tuesday through Friday they had been living and breathing theater together). They were inspirational words, representing a new found self-esteem, of a rebirth of reality, causing tears (that rolled down my and the other theatrical faces of the group), a moment that will live always and forever in their adolescent hearts.

It was our debut and wow did we put on a show! Before talking about this unique experience, and on behalf of everybody from the class, I’d like to thank CUFA, the Federal Government, professors, and coordinators for the opportunity to participate in this project, which not only provides training but creates opportunities as well. Now, we want more and more!! Saturday was not a regular day, it started differently. Everything seemed to be a little anxious ridden and full of expectation, and I’m certain that it wasn’t only for the group, but also for all the children present at the party (underneath the Negrao de Lima overpass). Being on stage for the first time isn’t easy! Being in front of more than 300 children is hard to describe…. The nervousness was noticeable in everybody’s faces, an indescribable energy and a huge responsibility to present to these children the magic of theater. It was about time! And we knew we couldn’t turn back the clocks. An audience that is usually so shy didn’t look away for a moment. They had a good time, and we did too. We did it! The first step has been made, and now it is time to make new inroads! Other challenges will surely come, but with our newfound energy, desire, creativity, and support from our professors we will go far! We believe in this! The most incredible part was meeting children who had never had the chance to watch a play, and well, this was simply a dream come true…. Our hearts overflowed with joy for having given them this chance. It was a day full of HAPPINESS and JOY, for all!! Put your hand in mine so that together we can do what alone we could never do. Telling stories our way was marvelous. Doing it our way we gave 300 children an experience that they would have never been able to experience, and it was art of a high level. With CUFA we have learned to be actors and mainly to be good citizens. I want to thank everyone from the CUFA family for giving me the

THE SECOND PERFORMANCE: THEATER AT THE PUBLIC SCHOOL On October 22, 2008 the Theater Arts-Madureira Overpass class was invited to present at the Carmela Dutra Institute in Madureira on “Semana do Normalista”(Normal School Student Week). The coordinator of project implementation, Janaina Rodrigues, and Theater Arts teachers, Juliana Moraes and Ricardo Andrade presented to the students what is CUFA, its projects, and the reason why the youth could benefit from participating in activities such as the spectacle we were there presenting. This is so great because as they are future teachers they will be able to take this message directly to classrooms. We did a skit after this long conversation, and then we were all invited to get in touch with our bodies and souls through a dynamic exercise led by teachers from TEATruRismaticOs. Result: more dreams were realized; more dreams instigated and fed; more empowerment generated. Another Theater Arts course had just been inaugurated - now at the Carmela Dutra Institute! In other words, CUFA is taking complementary education to state elementary schools.

Testimony by Anastacia Who knew that that the fear of getting on stage would turn combustible, into a craving for more and more? Now no one can hold us back! Another successful performance and with tons of passion! Well, it was about what we had talked about at Carmela Dutra Elementary School. We used popular songs to convey differences between LOVE and PASSION. We brought up the question of what is better, LOVE or PASSION? After lots of discussion and musical skits interpreting songs they can relate to, together we arrived at the conclusion that passion is a part of love but passion isn’t necessarily love! The play was about the difference between love and passion and we managed to illustrate it through our skits! I loved it. Bring on the next one because we’re ready! After this there will be more, now bring on what is to come! Roberto I don’t know where to begin, but I think that I’ll start at the most touching part. I know that I’m young and that we don’t know each other, but even so, I want to leave you - those who are interested in theater - with a message…. The first day was a day of bonding, everyone was so kind, and after that, compliments and joking around. Well, this is great. Each person with their own way of thinking and reacting made me realize the quality of actors and actresses we all are, and with so much determination and love, it is so obvious what is being created here, not just friendships, but a united family. Regarding the play, “To Be Happy Is What Really Matters”: I’m young, and I didn’t even have the education to act in a play, not even in a small part, but with enthusiasm and determination in our dressing room I’ve realized we can kick ass… We are actually very good at this, and if we continue at it, improvement will come continuously. I better stop here and leave you with these words because if I go on, in a little bit I’ll be preaching the psalms. LOL. Just a joke people! NOVEMBER 4, 2008: Debut at Ramos Theater on Day of the Favela Day of the Favela: it was the inauguration of the new CUFA site, Manguinos Base: party; party; party; party… This is true. There were two Theater Arts - Ramos classes - morning class with teacher, Ricardo Andrade, and afternoon class with Joyce Lynch. Classes were composed of students from Entorno, from Pedra do Sapo, and from Complexo do Alemao. Each class got themselves ready for the big day with enthusiasm but also fear, nervousness, and butterflies in the belly. And then, after lots of rehearsal, costume making, memorizing lines, well… nobody can describe the emotions of “the first time” better than Camila Triches, who was invited by teacher Joyce to work with us, and who followed our progress since the first rehearsal last week: “The first time” we can never forget.... They are moments of desperation! Eight different energies in a mist of euphoria and curiosity happen together. And then, there’s absence… Eyes wide shut, but attentively listening for a different sound. In the proceeding hours, complicity is present. All of us embark on the same journey, but each one to the beat of their own drum. The anxiety of the first time, which happens in just a few hours, is constant.

“This gets in the way!” “This also helps!” It is so nice to see the innocent enthusiasm in their eyes. The same thing happens in improvisation; so many emotions mixing together: happiness, loneliness, friendship, solidarity, insecurity, lack of trust, and fear. But it was time… “Well then, are you gonna show your stuff or no? No! I’m afraid. Afraid of what? Afraid of what others might know? No one will know. And know how?” And anyways, it’s good that others know, because those butterflies in those sixteen hours, which end in five minutes, the sensation of the first time is unforgettable. NOVEMBER 6, 2008 The Theater Arts students composed a RAP!!! And they sung it live for the Panamense Institute, an organization from Panama and for the representative of the Ministry of Tourism. On November 6, 2008 they visited CUFA to see the projects up close. NOVEMBER 13, 2008 Today the homies from Theater Arts participated in Nega Gizza’s video recording, “The Middle Man,” (Testa de Ferro), her latest hit. Testa de Ferro will soon be on the air and on various channels! This past 13th, students Reynaldo, Pablo, and Rafael from the Madureira Overpass class took part in the recording with Nega Gizza. A full day of recording. Various students from Cultural Production and Fashion and Modeling also had a piece in the recording, all counting on Raquel Azevedo’s costume designs, coordinator of this success, from the Fashion and Modeling course. Cintia Maura, Coordinator of Gastronomy also participated; and last but not least, the production team from Audiovisual - Film and Television, and our basketball athletes. Well, all this just to say that CUFA puts on various activities in the community together with their students because their daily their work is invested in the success of others, with full force and a lot of emotion! Letter by student/actress Yasmin Souza Meireles to readers, friends and fans from the Theater Arts course Rio de Janeiro: November 18, 2008 On November 18, 2008 for the third time we performed in the play “To Be Happy Is What Really Matters” under the Negrao de Lima Overpass in Madureira. It tells the story of a television show in which two TV presenters meet, Paulo Roberto and Roberto Paulo. Throughout the piece there are many surprises such as the eclectic dancer and her lesbian sister; a crazy woman from the audience; and the security guards that try to keep everything under control. This show is a mixture of Brazilian funk music, baile funk, and macumba, voodoo. The real kicker is the surprise at the end, when we discover that Paulo Roberto is gay, and not Roberto Paulo, who nobody doubted was gay from the very the beginning of the play. Yes, looks can be deceiving. A very pleasant experience. We were divided into various groups from the dissemination and production of the play to its premier. It was really cool, another success. At the end of the play “To Be Happy Is What Really Matters” we received trophies which we had made ourselves. By doing so, we were able to convey to the audience ideas of citizenship, humanity and social ethics: How do you contribute to a better world? What have you done for your life and for society? We asked these questions so that everyone could reflect on a better world, living in harmony. We don’t change the world alone, but we can when we start with change in ourselves. Another show done. Another battle won. Another barrier broken. And this is it, step by step towards success!

DECEMBER 5, 2008 This Friday, December 5, 2008 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Tourism the Theater Arts classes traveled by bus to Gavea, a neighborhood located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, to watch a performance by the well-known theater group, “Doctors of Joy.” The performance, “The Inventory,” was held at the “Teatro dos Quatro,” at Gavea Mall. In 2006, nominated for the Myriam Muniz and Caixa Economica Federal awards, “The Inventory” is filled with unforgettable scenes of their eight years of theatrical work in the hospitals of Rio de Janeiro. Poignant and humorous testimonies show the experience of being a clown in a hospital ward. Done with improvisation, there is a mix of reality and fiction as we hear the voices of patients, of the artists, of the doctors, and of the clowns. The Inventory - that which would have been forgotten if we hadn’t told it….

Gastronomy is the art of cooking and food appreciation. The course covers various topics: Brazilian, Italian, and French cookery; baking; confectionery; and notions of hygiene, sanitary inspection and surveillance; and finally, the importance of a good diet for overall well-being. The Gastronomy course was held at the following locations: San Sebastiao Church, the SESCs in Ramos and Madureira, CSU (Gabinal Margarida Social Center), Lona Cultural Jorge Benjor, the CEASA in Realengo, and at the samba school, Imperio Serrano. Along with menu planning and execution at CUFA events, such as at Nega Gizza’s video recording and at the Cultural Fair at CUFA, Cidade de Deus, our students were able to visit restaurants to re-train eating habits with information on reusing food. This is really the mission of the Gastronomy course because even with the most simple of ingredients, there are always ways to get more bang for your buck, and nutritiously.

CULTURAL PRODUCTION


Cultural Production was carried out at the Centro Cultural Jorge Benjor Realengo, the SESC Madureira, at the Negrão de Lima Overpass (in Madureira) and at a CUFA base in Cidade de Deus, totaling five classes, in the afternoons and at night. Besides the basic concepts of cultural production, the syllabus addressed topics such as mass culture, the study of laws that allow tax breaks for prospective sponsors (from project elaboration to attainment), approaching prospective sponsors, and finally, the post production process. The focus of each of these topics is the importance of entrepreneurialism for success. All these lessons were accompanied by classroom materials (handouts and such) and there was constant interaction between theory and practice. Students participated in events such as the International Film Festival CINECUFA, and there were technical visits to the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and PROJAC - recording studio of Globo Television, Rede Globo. The main purpose of these visits was to familiarize the students with productions of a large scale. The students met the Communications Director of Rede Globo, Luis Erlanger, and then, attended a lecture on the history of PROJAC and the partnership between Rede Globo and CUFA. Later, they got a studio tour of two well-known soap operas “Negocio da China” (The China Deal) and “Tres Irmas,”(Three Sisters) as well as a studio tour of the popular television series “A Grande Familia” (The Great Family). In addition to the vast amount of information on the field of cultural production, students interned at two major events: one produced by CUFA, the HUTUZ, and the second produced by the not for profit, Bank of Providence, the Feira da Providencia (Fair of Providence). At the end of the events, several students were absorbed into the labor market and some started their own production company.

FASHION AND MODELING COURSE


The course started with a brief historical sketch of the fashion world, touring several decades, stopping at different fads, the designers behind them, and a look at times of difficulty and euphoria. Exploring the styles from the past, we were pleasantly surprised with the discovery of all its curiosities. Street cultures, different prints, costumes and modeling are some of the attractions of this endless journey into the fashion world. When discussing fashion, the topic of prejudice easily comes up. Our challenge is to contest the idea that fashion is transitory, shortlived. Yes, this is true if the subject is fashion from the past where fashion was more of a reflection of a season or decade, but this is not the case today. Today fashion is a behavior, an attitude that is inscribed on the body, the self. Therefore, in an individualized society such as ours, everyone can have their own style. Well then, if fashion is behavior and attitude, CUFA has plenty. And while opening and exploring this fashion cabinet, so to speak, we laughed, we played, we got emotional, and finally, we came to the conclusion that we just love fashion - an eternal drive that is here to stay. The aim of the Fashion and Modeling course is job readiness for the fashion industry and/or to start working for themselves, as entrepreneurialism is always a main focus throughout the course. The lessons dealt with issues such as the history of fashion, designers, and everyday fashion (mainly hip hop influenced). The students also learned how to make their own designs, as well as produce textile techniques such as embroidery, fabric flowers, applications, patchwork, the technique of customizing t-shirts, and so on. The use of dyes and transfers was also a component of the course. Also covered were the primary and secondary colors of the color chart, different patterns and shapes, understanding fabric, and looking at the structure of a clothing store. As far as the modeling component goes, etiquette and posture in different social/work-related situations, such as in a job interview or on the runway was a strong focus of the course, also covered were photography and makeup. Besides the activities put on at different CUFA sites - at the Cultural and Athletic Centers, located underneath the Negrao de Lima Overpass, in Madureira - there were extra activities, such as fashion shows. One was held on President Vargas street - a main street in downtown Rio de Janeiro and at Rio de Janeiro’s main train station, Central do Brasil. These events got media attention as well as gave the students new experiences to improve their resumes.

AUDIOVISUAL - FILM AND TELEVISION


The Brazilian audiovisual industry is in constant evolution. There is the recovery and stability of Brazilian film industry, a surge in new TV channels, the internet, and a growing number of independent producers, making it easy to understand why there was such a great demand for the course, in fact with one of the highest enrollments. Also, it is apparent that students finishing the course have a great chance of finding employment in their area. Beginning in August 2008, the Audiovisual -Film and Television course actively participated in discussions, lectures and events related to the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival (one of biggest film festivals in the country), the CineCUFA (film festival put on by the Central Unica das Favelas) and watched dozens of films that led to debates on issues such as the labor market, the social and political function of films on/about the favela or slum, the function of new media forms, television, and the channels that show national films, just to name a few. The students also visited TV Globo studio and attended a seminar given by Producer, Paula Lavigne. Another concern of the course was constant student feedback received from questionnaires. Here follows an example questionnaire done by CUFA alumni, Regina Brizio, a 2007 graduate from Madureira. The questions are the following: 1. How did you find out about the course? I found out through a friend. 2. In which location did the course take place. Mine took place at the SESC Madureira, a partner institution. 3. For what reason did you take the course? For me, to give opportunities to the less advantaged youth who are in search of a more dignified life through education. This is because without education there’s no chance for them and CUFA gives them this chance.

4. Did the teacher present the educational material clearly? Regarding the material, it was presented clearly and even went above and beyond, complementing the lessons with books and newspaper/magazine articles. 5. Did the material meet your needs and expectations? So, regarding the material, it didn’t meet our needs because we did not have equipment available for classroom activities, or rather, the equipment (purchased by Instituto Treinar) took a long time to arrive and when it did arrive, it was for domestic use only. 6. Was the classroom a positive learning environment? The atmosphere was really nice. SESC let us use their facilities and they were always ready to serve us in the best way possible. 7. Was there interaction between the professor/staff and the students? There was always good rapport between the professor/staff and they were always available to help us when needed. 8. Did you ever think about giving up? Why? Not one moment did I consider giving up because I always learned new things with each lesson and so I was sure that this was what I needed. 9. Besides the knowledge, what values did you take from the course? Besides the knowledge, the importance of camaraderie, teamwork and friendship, especially those that I made in the course. They’re eternal. 10. Overall, what grade would you give the course? Overall, I’d give the course an 8. The knowledge and experience gained are very useful professionally speaking. 11. Today are you working in a similar area? Today I am working at the Audiovisual Center - CUFA - at the very place I graduated from, and studying at the Darcy Ribeiro School of Cinema to keep on growing more and more. CUFA has only opened doors for me. Not to mention, besides preparing the students to work in several areas in-

volving the audiovisual universe, the course also stimulated the production of short feature films developed entirely by students (from the discussion of the initial idea of the script to its final edition). The films produced by the students were the following: 2007 Title: SERinha In this video-exercise students seek to explore and define the often misunderstood term, FAVELA. What started as classroom discussion ended up as an outing to Serrinha, one of the oldest slums of Rio de Janeiro, and whose roots go back to fugitive slaves seeking refuge (Quilombo community). Today its venerated culture and memory remain through a musical tradition called Jongo, and other cultural expressions. In an unpretentious way, the film follows a conversation with the local inhabitants who reveal their fears, anxieties, and dreams. RESEARCH RESULTS


By doing a survey we were able to understand student satisfaction and ways to improve future courses for the students. Out of 717 students, 264 were part of this sample, which represents 37% of project participants. It was observed that there were predominantly young (16-20 years of age), unmarried women, living with their parents, and from the north and the west areas of Rio de Janeiro. They had finished elementary school in the public school system of Rio de Janeiro. These students chose to study at CUFA because of the good reputation of the institution, also because it was quality education at no cost. They found out about the course through media coverage, recommendation from friends and from within their own communities. The average level of education for these students’ parents was elementary to high school. The majority of students do not work and are being supported by their families, who receive between 1 and 3 minimum salaries per month (minimum salary = R$415 per month, which is approximately US$ 225.00) The results of the survey are the following: Total graduating students: 717 Students participating in the survey: 264

From the very beginning, the goal of the CUFA/Ministry of Tourism partnership has been to prepare our students for the job market, either through internships or paid work itself. Today, I am sure that the results have exceeded our expectations and prove that it is possible to promote genuine social transformation in the lives of young people, and raise a critical awareness in each one. Even more, these students now understand the importance of their roles in society, which is possibly even more valuable than the workrelated experience they gained from the course. Not to be clichÊ, but I believe together we made a difference. We have proven that the desire for change is actually what makes a difference, not only in the students’ lives but in the lives of each one of us as well. I would like to thank the Ministry of Tourism, to each one of our supporters, and to all of CUFA who invested and believed in our work. My special thanks to the coordinators of the courses, who went to great lengths to prove that unity is strength.

The graduation took place at three different places and times of the year: the first in 2008 at SESC; the second in April 2009 in the stadium of the GRES Império Serrano; and the third in November, 2009 at the CUFA Sports and Cultural Center (located under the Negrão de Lima overpass) - all located in the neighborhood, Madureira, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Friends and relatives of the students attended the graduation ceremonies, representatives of Central Unica das Favelas and the Ministry of Tourism, in addition to authorities and supporters of the project.

The Cultural Production course was fundamental because it allowed me to learn more about the area, and even land a permanent job from an internship at the Feira da Providencia. Juliana Leite, Cultural Production student Gastronomy is much more than I had imagined. The Gastronomy course gave me the opportunity to learn about gastronomy in depth, and thanks to CUFA, today I work at a respectable restaurant. CONCLUSION


Brazil is a country of continental dimensions, and almost as great as its territory, is the latent capacity of tourism. Its natural beauty, the hospitality of the people, and a vast array of options for fun, business and entertainment alike make the tourism industry stand out as an industry of the future. Therefore, investments in this area should be seen as an investment in the future of a nation. The project, “Professional Youth Training Course For SocioEconomic Integration of the Tourism Workforce� has achieved unquestionable results, thanks to the partnership between the Central Unica das Favelas and the Ministry of Tourism. Only a portion of the results are presented here, and which are very small in comparison to a series of other benefits that can not and should not be measured in numbers: changes in each person’s attitude, social gains, higher self-esteem and improved quality of life to name a few. We believe that this project was of extreme importance for the strengthening of cultural identity and encouraging artistic and cultural activity in the communities involved. By focusing on educating youth and preparing them for the job market, significant results for all of society are generated. We hope this information serves as an incentive and source of inspiration for other communities to rise to the challenge of creating concrete goals and setting up projects committed to social, ethical and cultural causes. Brazil has a great wealth of cultural diversity and that can only grow with activities and projects such as those developed by CUFA, where experiences and knowledge on life in the favela can become

a tourist attraction, and by doing so, enrich the tourist experience and contribute to the image of Rio de Janeiro as a city to be enjoyed and appreciated in all its diverse parts. We hope this is the first of many other projects for students and their families to benefit from, and working together with a common mission - government and civil society - a more just and decent country for all can be built.
