Upcoming Merry Maker Trips Sept. 14 (Tuesday) - Leave church at 8:30 am for Hendersonville Curb Market. After eating lunch at the cafeteria (between Hendersonville and Asheville), we will head to the Apple Barn just off I-26 (visible from I-26) to "pick from the bins" your choice of apples, cabbage, etc. Return home around 5:30 pm. Deadline for reservations Sept. 12. Call Gail Kendall at 327-7500. Oct. 8 (Friday) - Leave church at 8:30 am to go to JAARS, a branch of the Wycliffe Bible Society located in Waxhaw, NC. Sue Ness worked for Wycliffe for more than 20 years. JAARS provides technical support services such as aviation, information technology and media to advance Bible translation and literacy programs world-wide. Program begins at 9:30. Lunch in dining room - ($3 for salad to $8 for big meal--orders taken there). Bus tour of remaining facilities in the afternoon. Return home 4:30 or 5 pm. May sign up at Merry Makers meeting or call Gail Kendall at 327-7500. Deadline to sign up is Sunday, Oct. 3. Zumba Fitness Coming to OBC September 28! Preparing for the Music Year

Oakland’s graded choirs will begin on Wednesday, September 8 and Sunday, September 12. Please, sign up for the following:  Beginning Bells (Grades 4 & 5) — Call the church office, see Jackie Weeks or Shelden  Jubal Ringers (Grades 6-12) — Call the church office or see Shelden  Kindermusik (18 months - 5 years) — Late registration will be accepted; sign up online  Youth Choir (Grades 6-12) — All 6th graders need to make an appointment to have an interview with Shelden prior to first rehearsal

Calling all widows, widowers, and divorcees…... We will meet at 5:30 on Wednesday, September 15 at a reserved table in the gym for supper. We will make plans for a night out together. Hope to see you!

Jump Into Fall Youth Activities! Wednesday night supper and Youth on Mission begin on September 8. Youth Choir and Sunday Night Live kick off on September 12. Our theme for the fall will be “Following. Jesus. Together.” Make plans to be a part of our ongoing youth ministry activities.

Betsy Powers: Ministry Intern for the Fall

This fall, we welcome Betsy Powers to be a student ministry intern at Oakland. Betsy is a seminary student at Gardner-Webb Divinity School and resides in Rock Hill. As a requirement of her Masters in Divinity program, she must complete a 10 hour a week, unpaid ministry placement. Betsy grew up in Kentucky and graduated from Georgetown University (KY), has worked in several church settings in Tennessee and North Carolina. Betsy will work alongside David with teenagers on Sundays and college students on Tuesday nights.

A Message From Butch and Nell …. Dear OBC Family, It is very difficult to put into words how much we have enjoyed our time with you these past few years. As we were preparing to leave Brussels in 2006, Sis said, “It’s time you went somewhere where people will take care of you instead of you taking care of everyone else. Oakland will do that.” And indeed you have. If we are in any way ready and equipped to take on the task in Canada it is due in large part to your loving care. Though we knew nothing about South Carolina when we first came your way some 10 years ago, you have become family. You have been a safe place, where we have felt free to be ourselves. We are grateful. We now look forward to how we will continue to work together across geographical and cultural boundaries.
