Welcome to the 2020/21 Group Travel Today Planning Guide, what a year it has been a real challenge for the Group Travel Market and GTO’s alike, we decided to delay the publication date to ensure we were in a position to reflect the current situation, thankfully the Covid-19 epidemic has been bought under control, now there is a renewed optimism for the future of the British Tourism Industry and from what you have been telling us your appetite for group travel is greater than ever. During the lockdown the importance of technology in keeping communities connected has become apparent, improving the confidence of the older generation to embrace technology as the gift that just keeps giving, whether it helped appreciate the benefits of online research and information or just a way to keep in touch with friend and family, and for GTO’S to keep in touch with their members many of whom will have been over sixty and possibly shielding. In a recent article from Wendy HartleyScarff, chief executive of AGTO, the Association of Group Travel Organisers, she used a quote from Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America famously wrote: “Out of adversity comes opportunity”.

Travel Organisers from updating the way that their members can communicate between themselves. Increasing their presence across social media, posting and engaging on channels including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn.

On Facebook, they have separate pages for each of their regional branches, in addition, they launched a new website that gives the 200 or so Associate members (destinations, visitor attractions, hotels and other industry suppliers) the opportunity to keep their 400 or so GTO members updated with news about special offers and product news.

It’s evident the time, effort, and commitment from the AGTO will secure its position as the UK’s largest independent, professional membership organisation supporting and representing the interests of individuals who organise travel for groups. I hope this guide will prove to be a useful tool in planning your days out, short breaks and tours in this “new normal” setting, there’s no doubt you are all keen to get out there and enjoy a cornucopia of experiences with like-minded individuals.

One of the real benefits of belonging to AGTO, whether you’re a GTO or an Associate (supplier) member, is the opportunity to network together. GTOs talk with Associates who, in turn, are often able to offer preferential rates for groups. In turn, Associates are able to find out from GTOs just what sort of group product they want. The AGTO website was relaunched earlier in 2020 and the redesign of the popular AGTO Magazine means GTOs are benefiting from more information to help them plan their trips.

ASSOCIATION OF GROUP TRAVEL ORGANISERS The Changing Face of Group Travel How will the group travel landscape look in a year’s time? Wendy Hartley-Scarff, chief executive of AGTO, the Association of Group Travel Organisers, offers a few thoughts on how the sector might change.

It will come as no surprise to discover that many GTOs are looking for something different. In many cases, GTOs have been there, and have the T-shirt. They’ve done the tour, they’ve travelled on the train, they’ve had the cruise. Now they’re looking for new experiences to offer their groups.

Will group travel ever be quite the same again? There’s a view in some quarters that the resilience of GTOs and the supplier side means that yes, over time, we will indeed see coaches taking 40 or 50 people off to a garden show, a visit to a stately home, or on a five-day tour of Devon.

It’s hard to think of the COVID-19 pandemic as offering anything positive, but actually, if social distancing remains with us for some time, only being able to take, say 25 people on a coach, opens up opportunities for new, small-group visits. Being welcomed by the Lord or Lady of the Manor and invited into a private dining room for tea, coffee, a biscuit and a more personal chat could be a welcome departure. Some coach operators, especially those who own their own coaches, have said that coach hire prices may be able to be adjusted to ensure GTOs don’t have to charge their members double price. Of course, this ‘new world’ isn’t going to work for everyone. But as we look ahead, is this the opportunity for GTOs to influence the group travel landscape?

That, of course, is what coach operators, visitor attractions and tourism suppliers desperately want to see. For individual GTOs, struggling through the pandemic with limited opportunities to bring their group together, even just for tea and coffee, the promise of filling a coach to enjoy another great trip out is equally attractive. But with full-size coaches likely to be limited to carrying a maximum of around 25 or so people for some time, the days of large groups heading out might be some time away. In the meantime, there’s an opportunity to take stock, and to look at how the group travel landscape might change, and indeed, is already changing. Is the ‘traditional’ tourism model of one coach depositing 50 people at a tourist destination or attraction a sustainable way forward. We’ve all read about the effects of so-called ‘over tourism’ in continental destinations such as Venice, Barcelona and Bruges. But what about this country? To my mind, GTOs have a real opportunity to influence how the future of sustainable tourism is delivered. 6

THE SH O RT 20 TH CE NTURY TRACES OF THREE WARS IN HEUVELLAND Heuvelland is the only municipality in Flanders where there are still traces of the three great conflicts of the previous century. Inspired by the book The Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century, 1914-1991 by the famous British historian Eric Hobsbawn, Heuvelland Tourism has put together an interesting arrangement. Accompanied by a specialist guide, you will visit the following three sites:

WWI: BAYERNWALD: The Germans captured this 40 metre-high strategic location in 1914 and turned it into an impregnable fortress, which they held until the summer of 1917. The ingenious trench system at Bayernwald was the German answer to the mining threat posed by their British opponents. Part of this system has been accurately reconstructed. Its listening shafts, trenches and four bunkers tell the story of the war from the German side. WWII: BUNKER FROM THE MAGINOT LINE ON THE ZWARTEBERG: Increasing German militarism during the 1930s forced France to build a new defensive line along its frontier. The brain behind this plan was the French Minister of War, André Maginot, a decorated veteran from the Great War. He died in 1932 but the new fortifications were named after him posthumously. The Maginot bunker on the Black Mountain is of the S10 type and was known as Ermitage Sud (Hermitage South). COLD WAR: THE COMMAND BUNKER After WWII, France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg decided to develop a joint air defence system. Three huge underground bunkers were constructed as part of this system, with one of them – in Kemmel, started in 1952 – serving as the command post. The guide will conduct you through two of the underground levels, where some of the more than 50 rooms have been turned into a museum. Wherever possible, the rooms have been left as they were during the Cold War, so that you can sample the authentic 1950s atmosphere. All the locations in this arrangement can be visited individually.

The area of Heuvelland is located in West Flanders and is known as ‘Land of Hills’, offering a mixture of First World War sites and memorials along with some relaxing leisure activities. Around the region, there’s much more to see. The municipality of Heuvelland (Hill Country) is the most beautiful part of West Flanders - say the 9,000 or so denizens. Despite their proximity to France, the Flemish culture is to the fore, and the village names reflect that: Dranouter, Kemmel, De Klijte, Loker, Nieuwkerke, Westouter, Wijtschate and Wulvergem. Each as pretty as the next.

Fancy a beer? With the ‘Bierkasteel’, Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck makes history. The Bierkasteel is the name of a new and impressive brewery complex in Izegem. The Bierkasteel is unique because in the last hundred years no new brewery has been built from scratch to a new site in the country. The Bierkasteel is a multifunctional event, relaxation and experience location where you can discover the wonderful world of brewing beer. Enjoy, taste, party, discover, meet, etc. The Bierkasteel offers a unique setting for an unforgettable experience.

Edwards’ Group Holidays department caters to a wide range of customers and their varying needs including WI groups, choirs, gardening groups and sports and social clubs. They have an extremely busy private hire department that provide coaches for not only local clubs and societies but the Wales rugby and football teams, Cardiff City football club, The British Lions and most of the visiting teams to the Principality Stadium. All staff are locally employed and the staff are as passionate as the directors, treating the company as their own. A lot of local families are dependent on the business and generations of families have worked alongside the Edwards family in the business. The business was created in 1925 but every day is treated like the first day of business with youthful energy, drive and passion. Edwards Coaches are committed to providing the best service possible at all times to their customers and look forward to welcoming you and your group on board one of their coaches very soon.

Menton, French Riviera, South of France

Menton is a town on the French Riviera in southeast France. It’s known for beaches and gardens such as the Serre de la Madone garden, showcasing rare plants. East, the hilly, medieval old town is home to Basilique SaintMichel, with its 18th-century bell tower, and the ornate facade of La Chapelle des Pénitents-Blancs. Nearby, the Musée Jean Cocteau collection Séverin Wunderman displays works by poet Jean Cocteau.

East of England

East of England With so many places to visit in the East of England you’ll be spoilt for choice, it’s a perfect destination for days out, short breaks and holidays, for the active amongst us, ideal for cycling, walking and boating, not only does it have great countryside and coastline, but there are also theme parks, animal attractions, magnificent gardens and stately homes to visit. A largely flat region of dramatic skies, if you’re lucky you might spot a mosquito in the air from the de Havilland Aircraft Museum or another iconic aircraft from Shuttleworth.

Heart of England

Heart of England The Heart of England has always been a booming economic centre, starting with the wool trade in the Middle Ages which enriched Coventry, before becoming the pivot of the Industrial Revolution fuelled from the Black Country, it still maintains a largely unspoilt region found to the north and west of Birmingham, which means that there’s plenty of things to do both outdoors and indoors, walking, cycling, or maybe a boat trip on the canals (there are more in this area than there are in Venice, although we haven’t spotted any gondola’s yet), visiting stately homes and gardens, why not visit Croome Court once a secret wartime airbase and now a visitor centre. Outside is the grandest of English landscapes, ‘Capability’ Brown’s masterful first commission, with commanding views over the Malvern’s. This is arguably the most medieval of the UK’s regions, with great castles such as that at Warwick and literary trails around Stratford-Upon-Avon, home of the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare.

London The world’s greatest city (although we would say that, perhaps we’re a little bias) needs little introduction, other than to say that whatever type of day out, short break or holiday you are after, if you can’t find it here it doesn’t exist. From free museums, art galleries and world-class theatre, iconic landmarks Big Ben, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, The Shard, we could be typing all day, with foodie delights, serious shopping and thanks to the abundance of greenery and outdoor activities, London has become the world's first National Park City. Why not do a bit of boating in Hyde Park or deer-spotting in Richmond Park? There’s history in abundance, from the early Middle Ages to be seen at Westminster Abbey and throughout the City of London where parts of the Roman Wall still stand — through to Regency and Georgian London magnificently preserved in the West End and around Regent’s Park.

North East

The North East A region that combinessandy beaches, castles and portcullises, miles and miles of natural terrain that's divided and dominated by Hadrian’s Wall, but also includes 3 vibrant and cosmopolitan cities and of course the birthplace of Ant and Dec who it would appear we can't get enough of. The magnificent Durham Cathedral, on a huge promontory overlooking the River Wear, is held by many tobe the finest example of Norman architecture in the land, and of course a more modern masterpiece The Angel of the North whose home is in Gateshead.
