Welcome to this year’s Group Travel Today Planning Guide. If recent events have taught us anything it must be that we mustn’t take for granted how valuable the ability to travel is, so with this in mind we hope, as usual, you find it a useful tool to help you plan your day trips, short breaks and tours.
attractions, trips and tours on offer for you and your group to enjoy, with many offering bespoke packages with added extra’s tailored to suit each parties’ individual tastes, needs, time constraints at reduced prices. Make those memories, it’s time to browse and book.
Here at Group Travel Today we’ve always known that Group Travel Organisers have been trail blazers, so when it comes to climate change and the practices we all put in place to help reduce our carbon footprint there can’t be many other forms of transport greener than coach travel and coach tourism, if you consider that at approximately 4 times the size of a family car but with the capacity to transport as many passengers as 20 cars, the greenhouse gas emission per person is far less, if you do the maths by over 6 times, combined with the soaring price of fuel it’s a no brainer.
Happy Travelling Nigel

The memorial was officially opened on 11 November 1998 in the presence of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Irish President McAleese and King of the Belgians Albert II. Another reason for founding the Peace Village Hostel was the presence of the 'International School for Peace Studies' which opened its doors in Messines in 2001. The goal was to bring Irish youngsters from different backgrounds together and talk about who their grandfathers fought side by side during the First World War.

They look forward to welcoming back worldclass soloists – from legendary pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Evgeny Kissin to younger stars Janine Jansen and Alice Sara Ott, as well as the LSO’s own wonderful principal players Peter Moore, Roman Simovic, Ben Thomson and David Cohen, who appear as soloists in a wide range of concertos.

continuing his cycle of Shostakovich symphonies with two of the composer’s biggest creations – the 11th and 13th. In the second half of the season, FrançoisXavier Roth will join them for an exploration of Beethoven’s symphonies alongside more contemporary works.

Many of their programmes include some less familiar repertoire, alongside well known works, and they hope that you will enjoy experiencing new music and encountering fresh voices. Across two concerts, André J Thomas will explore American musical traditions, from gospel to orchestral; there are premieres by Daniel Kidane, Wynton Marsalis and Louise Drewett, among others; and they are thrilled to welcome saxophonist Jess Gillam for her LSO debut in November as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, as well as a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert.

2022/23 marks Sir Simon Rattle’s final season as LSO Music Director, before he becomes Conductor Emeritus in 2023. His concerts will bring a return to the big orchestral works that were missing from concert halls during the Covid-19 pandemic: among them Elgar’s Second Symphony, Bruckner’s Seventh, Sir Simon’s own inimitable journey through the music of Stravinsky, and a moving choral programme pairing Szymanowski and Brahms. Following the success of The Cunning Little Vixen in 2019, Sir Simon also continues his journey into Janáček’s operas with a concert performance of Katya Kabanova, which will be brought to life by a firstclass line-up of singers.
Alongside the Barbican season, there is a vibrant programme of events at LSO St Luke’s, including two new series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts featuring a stellar line-up of soloists. And they are delighted to be continuing their extensive programme of streamed concerts through their partnership with Marquee TV. lso.co.uk
becoming one of the most vibrant and must-visit areas in the South East. With specialty markets, an impressive events programme, and over 100 independent shops, bars and eateries, Newbury is one of the best market towns in the country. The bustling but quintessentially British town is steeped in history and home to Highclere Castle - star of the world-famous Downton Abbey. Surrounded by outstandingly beautiful countryside with canals running through its centre, visitors are spoiled for choice for things to do in Newbury, only a stone’s throw away from the waterside.

Come and visit the world-renowned
Leaves of Southwell After being closed for over a year whilst undergoing significant conservation work, thanks to £2.2m funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are delighted that the ‘Leaves of Southwell’ can once again be seen in all their exquisite glory. Regarded as the best example of 13th century naturalistic carving in the United Kingdom, and indeed Europe, they are of significant global importance and have a stunning setting inside the glorious Chapter House of Southwell Minster. Whilst you’re here, why not visit The Archbishop’s Palace, once home to Cardinal Wolsey, which is situated next door and includes the serene Palace Gardens, with its abundance of flowers, plants and wildlife the perfect place to sit and relax! Situated in the heart of rural Nottinghamshire, in the picturesque Georgian market town of Southwell, just 8 miles from the A1, there’s never been a better time to visit Southwell Minster. Refectory and Gift Shop on-site. Open 365 days per year. We look forward to welcoming you soon!
“I’d heard about Southwell’s famed Chapter House but never expected it to be so beautiful.”
“Breathtaking craftsmanship”
“So lifelike you can almost hear them rustle”

Heart of England
Heart of England The Heart of England has always been a booming economic centre, starting with the wool trade in the Middle Ages which enriched Coventry, before becoming the pivot of the Industrial Revolution fuelled from the Black Country, it still maintains a largely unspoilt region found to the north and west of Birmingham, which means that there’s plenty of things to do both outdoors and indoors, walking, cycling, or maybe a boat trip on the canals (there are more in this area than there are in Venice, although we haven’t spotted any gondola’s yet), visiting stately homes and gardens, why not visit Croome Court once a secret wartime airbase and now a visitor centre. Outside is the grandest of English landscapes, ‘Capability’ Brown’s masterful first commission, with commanding views over the Malvern’s. This is arguably the most medieval of the UK’s regions, with great castles such as that at Warwick and literary trails around Stratford-UponAvon, home of the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare.

London
London The world’s greatest city (although we would say that, perhaps we’re a little bias) needs little introduction, other than to say that whatever type of day out, short break or holiday you are after, if you can’t find it here it doesn’t exist. From free museums, art galleries and world-class theatre, iconic landmarks Big Ben, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, The Shard, we could be typing all day, with foodie delights, serious shopping and thanks to the abundance of greenery and outdoor activities, London has become the world's first National Park City. Why not do a bit of boating in Hyde Park or deer-spotting in Richmond Park? There’s history in abundance, from the early Middle Ages to be seen at Westminster Abbey and throughout the City of London where parts of the Roman Wall still stand — through to Regency and Georgian London magnificently preserved in the West End and around Regent’s Park.

North East
The North East A region that combines sandy beaches, castles and portcullises, miles and miles of natural terrain that's divided and dominated by Hadrian’s Wall, but also includes 3 vibrant and cosmopolitan cities and of course the birthplace of Ant and Dec who it would appear we can't get enough of. The magnificent Durham Cathedral, on a huge promontory overlooking the River Wear, is held by many to be the finest example of Norman architecture in the land, and of course a more modern masterpiece The Angel of the North whose home is in Gateshead.

North West
The North West The Industrial Revolution created mighty cities thanks to textiles and shipping which are now home to arguably the greatest football teams the world has ever seen, well at least the most successful and lucrative. It doesn't come as a surprise to learn that this is the 3rd most densely populated area in the United Kingdom after the South East and Greater London, there's something for everyone here, iconic cities that are as famous for their music scenes as their grand industrial buildings and museums. Hear The Beatles resonate from street corners in Liverpool and the Stone Roses and Oasis rock in fashionable Manchester and now also home to Media City. For nature lovers, landscapes filled with lakes, estuaries buzzing with birdlife, and there's the Lake District another oasis of tranquil beauty.

The South East
The South East The South East is renowned for its beautiful gardens and miles of stunning coastline. Rich in cultural attractions, the region is easily accessible from London, and is also home to gently rolling countryside, two National Parks and some of Britain's sunniest and driest weather! Which has made this a firm favourite for those seeking a great dayout, short break or holiday.

Wales
Wales From valleys that are synonymous with mining to the mountainous National Park at Snowdonia and glorious sandy beaches that are among the longest in Britain. Interested in medieval history? The cathedral at the UK’s smallest city, St David’s, is a must. After great castles with battlements and drawbridges? It’s little wonder that Wales is also known as “the castle capital of the world”. Try Conwy, Caernarfon, Caerphilly and Beaumaris. For coastal holidays, you have more than 100 beaches dotted along the coastline, with 33 Blue Flag beaches. From Swansea and the Gower Peninsula to Pembrokeshire and Anglesey, Wales’s sandy beaches and coastal and cliff-top walks attract beach-lovers and ramblers from around the world. And with traditional Welsh villages in the north such as Betws-y-Coed, the breathtaking Brecon Beacons and traditional seaside resorts at Rhyl, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay, it is clear that Wales is wide open and ready to greet you and your groups. Spotlight on Rhondda ... If you’re looking for unique places to visit with groups, look no further than Rhondda Cynon Taf in South Wales. Nestled between the Brecon Beacons and Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taf is home to some of the most entertaining venues in the UK. They have history, heritage, culture and more than a touch of adventure all within their very scenic mountains and valleys.
Royal Mint Experience offers tour groups the chance to take a look at how coins are made. Visitors can take a look behind the scenes, spend time in the interactive exhibition areas and also strike their own coin as a souvenir.
Visit A Welsh Coal Mining Experience at Rhondda Heritage Park and listen as the ex-coal miner coal guides take you underground and tell tales of mining life from an era when coal from the Rhondda powered the world. In addition to the tour there are fascinating exhibitions and the café is a perfect place to stop for refreshments.
Another great place for history lovers is Nantgarw China Works – the oldest surviving china works in the UK. This hidden gem offers
