Historic Houses and Gardens Directory 2019

Welcome to the Historic Houses and Gardens Directory 2019, packed with a fantastic collection of treasures waiting to be discovered.

There’s no doubt that for such a small geographical area the British Isles punches well above its weight leaving all other opposition on the ropes, it surely deserves to retain the heavyweight title year on year.

The rich and heterogeneous history and culture on offer, created over many centuries is unsurpassed and in many cases only available to view here.

So, whatever your group are interested in you’re sure to find it here within these pages, from the most royal of houses to the most opulent spectacles of affluence and power, extravagantly furnished and waiting for you to admire, or indeed buildings less extravagantly decorated yet still of great national importance and worthy of a visit.

Penshurst Place & Gardens Penshurst Place & Gardens, a beautiful defended manor house dating from 1341 in the Weald of Kent, is no stranger to the shouts of “action!” clapboards and cameras, having been featured in nearly 60 TV programmes and large scale films, to date. Whether it’s shown as the charming building it is, transformed into Richmond Palace or Henry VIII’s office, Penshurst Place lends itself to all manner of filming projects giving visitors the chance to explore an array of their on-screen favourites. More recently recognised for its role in popular historical dramas Wolf Hall and the Hollow Crown series, the historic building and family home of the Sidney family since 1552, Penshurst Place has a filming history dating back to the 1960’s, with ‘Anne of a Thousand Days’, released in 1969. The film, starring Richard Burton and Geneviève Bujold as Henry and Anne, tells the tale of their doomed courtship. The house and gardens feature heavily in the film, with the large Italian Garden and manicured South Lawn being particularly prominent. In 1986, Penshurst Place was to be the backdrop for what would turn out to be a cinematic cult classic The Princess Bride. Fast forward to the 21st Century, and Penshurst Place can be seen in 2007’s The Other Boleyn Girl where visitors will recognise the sweeping staterooms, Baron’s Hall and 11 acres of landscaped gardens. Visitors will also be able to recognise scenes from the 2012 and 2016 Hollow Crown Series, which starred (among others) Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddlestone. With further projects still yet to be aired, including 2019’s “Mary Queen of Scots” starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, Penshurst Place remains a firm favourite with Location Managers, allowing those who may not get the chance to visit the house and gardens in person, the opportunity to enjoy its history in the comfort of their home.

Many secrets are yet to be uncovered at Calke Abbey, whose peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards bear witness to a history that many country houses did not survive. Faded garden buildings and a large kitchen garden hint at former fortunes while inside, a collection of contrasts tells tales of an eccentric family who never through anything away, and who sought isolation in a place where time stood still. Beyond, the historic and fragile habitats of Calke Park await discovery. Don't miss one of the oldest oak trees in England, or the stunning 18th century state silk bed, which lay undiscovered until 1985. Enjoy seasonal meals and sweet treats in the restaurant, and take a piece of Calke home with you as a souvenir from the shop.
