Historic Houses and Gardens Directory 2018

Welcome to our 10th anniversary edition of the Historic Houses, Castles and Gardens Directory 2018, 10 years is the blink of an eye in comparison to the age of the magnificent compendium of Historic Houses, Castles and Gardens at our disposal, previously, and in some cases, still occupied by the rich and famous, and sometimes infamous. Ask yourself what does it take to “keep up appearances” the answer is not so simple, there’s much to maintaining the fabric of our great buildings than might be imagined, but for starters there’s a whole lot of planning, hard work, foresight, dedication, restoration, conservation and a whole heap of passion and lastly money and that’s where you and I come in. Some of our magnificent buildings look and feel so familiar, many of the houses, castles and gardens available to visit, have provided the location for films and TV productions, indeed Haddon Hall has hosted not one but three productions of Jane Eyre, as well as the love of extraordinary buildings which are part of our shared history, we love a romance or two. For those of a an age that might make it a bit difficult to persuade that a visit to a Castle would be a great way to spend a day, you could always say that this was the place of the original Game of Thrones and given the complexity of history in many you wouldn’t be to far from the truth! There’s no better time to arrange a visit for you and your group, to a vast imposing mansion to experience all the diversity of British heritage for an historic day out which will ensure the future of these historic buildings for centuries and generations to come. Stansted Park

Nestled between Chichester and Portsmouth and part of the South Downs National Park, Stansted Park stands in 1800 acres of extraordinary landscaped parkland and ancient forest. In 1983 the 10th Earl of Bessborough made the decision to give Stansted Park, the Arboretum, his family home and its beautiful contents to the public. Stansted Park Foundation was set up as a charitable trust charged with the preservation of the estate for the benefit of the nation. The ground floor is adorned with the Ponsonby family portraits and possessions as well as original furniture, fixtures and fittings. Downstairs is home to one of Britain’s best examples of ‘life below stairs’ with room upon room laid out as it would have been in the house’s heyday. In addition to the mansion, Stansted Park also has a private chapel which has a unique colourful history of its own. This elegant Regency chapel stands on the site of the first great house and re-uses some of its fifteenth century masonry and locks. The chapel’s unique east window illustrates the wish of its founder, Lewis Way, to re-unite the Jewish and Christian faiths.

Today visitors to the Park can enjoy seasonal tours of this splendid mansion as well as being able to use the grounds and forest free of charge throughout the year. This public space includes the walled gardens with its tearoom, farm shop, garden centre, maze and miniature railway. The house hosts stunning weddings, prestigious business meetings and seminars and is home to some of the best events in the south. For more information or to get in touch please visit

Parham House & Gardens

Set in the heart of an ancient deer park below the South Downs, Parham House and Gardens offers an unforgettable day out for groups. One of the country’s finest Elizabethan Houses, its tranquility and timeless beauty have changed little over the centuries. The main rooms of the House are the Great Hall, Great Chamber and Long Gallery, which contain an outstanding collection of pictures, furniture and needlework. Parham’s magnificent gardens are a series of interlocking pictures, woven into each other with a tapestry-like effect, designed to excite for a long season, peaking in summer and late autumn. The beautiful four-acre eighteenth century Walled Garden includes a vegetable garden, orchard and wonderful 1920’s Wendy house. Its opulent mixed borders and abundant greenhouse provide flowers and plants to decorate every room in the House, an old Parham tradition. The adjoining Pleasure Grounds include a lake, many specimen trees and a brick and turf maze. Open from 1 April to 14 October 2018, they are delighted to welcome pre-booked groups to explore Parham and discover their beautiful House, fascinating art collections and award-winning gardens. For more information please visit, call 01903 742 021 or

Powis Castle

The great halls and quiet chambers of Powis Castle are a time machine full of exceptional portraits that can transport you back across the ages. Running throughout 2018 ‘House of Portraits’ delves beneath the surface of these intricate works by prominent artists such as Joshua Reynolds, John Singer Sargent and Thomas Gainsborough, to uncover the symbolic messages hidden within them. Join Dr John Chu, Assistant Curator of Pictures and Sculpture, National Trust, as he guides you through the castle’s opulent state rooms by audio tour. As a specialist in the works of Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, this is a unique opportunity to experience the castle’s world-class collection through the eyes of an expert. The centrepiece of the exhibition is an intricate Jacobean miniature portrait painted by Isaac Oliver (1565-1617) which will be on display at Powis for the first time since it was purchased for the nation, with generous support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Art Fund. After exploring the Castle, visit their Clive museum which hosts the largest private collection of 17th to 19th century Indian artefacts in Europe or wander along their 300 year old Italianate terraces and marvel at their spectacular yew ‘tumps’, dancing statues and lavish herbaceous borders.

There’s never been a better time to visit an English Heritage site! Up and down the country, at properties big and small, gardens and historic interiors are being conserved and transformed with the help of top designers and the addition of 21st-century facilities. Technology is helping to bring England’s story to life in new exhibitions and displays, while cutting-edge design is being used to incorporate cafés, shops and other facilities into ancient spaces, introducing higher levels of comfort and service for group visitors.

Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens

Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens cloistered no more! Off the usual group tour track, the ruined medieval Carthusian monastery of Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens in North Yorkshire steps into the role of a fully-fledged garden destination in its own right this spring (2018) following significant improvements and a top level re-design led by Award winning Garden Designer and TV presenter, Chris Beardshaw.

One of the best-preserved medieval charterhouses in Europe and the only publicly-accessible Carthusian monastery in England, Mount Grace still has the remains of the 15 cells where monks lived in solitude. The 17th-century house on the site was transformed into a fashionable Arts and Crafts mansion in the early 1900s.

The garden transformation enhances the terracing and dell garden in front of this mansion, with the addition of a variety of new beds and paths. Room-like sections of gardens have been created, to establish a horticultural Arts and Crafts link between the house and garden. Access from the parking area (with three coach bays) has been upgraded and a new café added. Interpretation panels, trails, tours and activities will help visitors to explore and find out more about this fascinating and revitalised 600-year old site and its stories. Just some of the other top group favourites to bookmark for group 2018/19 itineraries include: •Osborne, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s stunning seaside hideaway on the Isle of Wight •Audley End House and Gardens, a magnificent Jacobean mansion in Essex •Eltham Palace and Gardens, one of the country’s greatest Art Deco gems in South London •Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, ‘frozen in time’ and conserved ‘as found’ in North Yorkshire •Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, surrounded by 30-acres of Grade 1 plant rich grounds in Northumberland

Not the usual historical showpiece displayed with grandeur, Brodsworth Hall was ‘frozen in time’ and conserved as it was found by English Heritage during the 1980s. Reflecting its original opulence, but well-worn and full of surprises, thousands of items of family clutter – from biscuit tins, to beds and electric fires and magazines – are placed in their exact position. Outside, the 15 acres of restored gardens, planted as they would have been during the 1890s offer all-year interest, with a fern dell featuring unusual specimens and an alpine garden, inspired by the travels of the estate’s wealthy Victorian owners. Pre-booked group ‘Taster Tours’ allow access to the house before it opens. Tearoom seats 70 inside and 80 outside.
