A mix of commercial and community pressures are prompting some local authorities in popular tourist destinations to downgrade coach parking and drop-off facilities This is impacting group travel, as AGTO chief executive Wendy Hartley-Scarff explains
It seems to have been a talking point for as long as I can remember A group travel organiser talks to a coach operator to discuss a destination for a day trip or as part of a touring itinerary. The coach operator, well versed in drop-off and pick-up points, and coach parking, offers
the necessary advice that the GTO incorporates into the tour itinerary
But what happens when a popular tourist destination decides to remove those allimportant drop-off and parking facilities
Earlier this year it was reported that the coach park in Matlock Bath in Derbyshire was being used to house a travellers camp Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) was reported saying that the coach park was being used as “a tolerated site” for a Traveller family to which DDDC “owed a legal obligation ” One coach operator, finding the main parking spaces occupied, parked nearby on the site, receiving a Penalty Charge Notice for simply using their commonsense
The coach operator is reported as saying that
without access to the parking area in question there is nowhere else practical for coaches to use in Matlock Bath. I understand that DDDC is searching for a permanent site for the Travellers
In the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water Parish Council had voted in favour of seeking a Traffic Regulation Order to ban coaches entirely from the village This followed the closure of the town’s privatelyowned coach park and a move to reduce the number of coaches descending on the popular destination The potential loss of business that would result from such a ban prompted the Bourton Business Network to say that around 20% of revenue from its members comes from coach groups It notes that without that business there’s a concern businesses will close.
A compromise is sought, but until that point, uncertainty remains, making it more of a challenge for GTOs, and coach operators, to plan their days out
On a positive note it was good to see the Confederation of Passenger Transport’
Coach Friendly Status’, a long-standing scheme that encourages destinations to deliver a series of measures that demonstrates its commitment to welcoming coaches and groups, awarded to Perth and Bishop Auckland The latter is seeing a tourism renaissance thanks to The Auckland Project and Kynren, the outdoor spectacular that tells the story of England from a north east perspective Coach Friendly Status, which can be applied for by towns, cities, visitor attractions and anywhere that wants to attract coaches and groups, is renewed every few years to ensure the facilities remain in place
You can see more about this at cptuk org/campaigns-repo rts/coach-friend lyscheme
But the overall message is clear If, for whatever reason, a local authority, or a visitor attraction, is unable or unwilling to provide the facilities needed to welcome coaches and groups, it’s time for groups to go elsewhere
When you’re planning a trip, talk to your coach operator. Get their advice After all, there are plenty of places that do want groups
The continuing, amazing adventures of Pauline & Ken, on their travels.
Despite a fairly full year of holidays already booked when we met Jackie Cook from Success Tours in August 2023, we added a trip to South Devon The hotel, The Langstone Cliff, between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren, came highly recommended and didn’t disappoint. In fact some are already talking of wanting to go back. Sadly we didn’t get quite the numbers we hoped for but the 29 of us that went really enjoyed the itinerary that had been put together for us We were joined by Laura from Success Tours for 3 days and it was nice to put a face to the person I have been dealing with operationally for a long time
Quite often we include a venue on the way to the hotel but this time we decided that it would be nice just to head straight for our destination and have the afternoon, which turned out to be hot and sunny, to relax or, as most of us did, take a walk along the cliff path to Dawlish Warren Several people dipped their toes into the outside pool and declared it warm enough to swim in and so one lady did. Our driver decided he would try the indoor pool The hotel has a terrace
and large lawn with tables and chairs and an uninterrupted view to the sea Part of our package was a pre-dinner drink of either wine, beer or a soft drink. A nice touch and well received as we all like to socialise with a drink before our meal Unlike some hotels this one has three separate lounges with plenty of chairs and settees
Having had a relaxing afternoon the day before no one objected to leaving at 8 30am to get to Dartmouth in time for a coffee and walk along the river frontage before taking the 11am ‘Christie
booked) by a volunteer driver who took the 12 people in our party, who would have been unable to manage the 10-minute steep walk, up to the house. This took four separate journeys Not so many needed help on the return but our fantastic coach driver, Dave, volunteered to stay and see everyone safely down in time for the return boat to Dartmouth.
The house is filled with 1950’s memorabilia and first editions of all her books as well as many artefacts from her travels with her archaeologist second husband to Near
Belle’ boat to Greenway, Agatha Christie’s holiday home now owned by the National Trust After the 30minute journey we were met at the quay (by arrangement when we
and the Middle East. There are plenty of walks including down to ‘Raleigh’s Boathouse” Sir Walter Raleigh was a frequent visitor to the original Greenway Court. A
favourite part of the garden where Agatha and her family watched the boats and wildlife on the River Dart was from the Battery Whilst most of us confined ourselves to visiting the house and walled garden a few did make it around the whole site.
The ‘Christie Belle’ made good time on the return journey and with 10 minutes to spare before the 2.30pm Kingswear ferry left we decided to catch that instead of the later 3pm ferry we had been booked on This proved to be a good choice as everyone had time for either a beer or Pimm’s at a nearby pub or a tea and cake in the railway station cafe before our 4pm train left We were back at the hotel by 5 30pm in plenty of time for our drinks at 6.30pm. Wednesday was not such a busy day. The first visit was to Burrow Farm Gardens at Dalwood near Axminster It’s called East Devon’s Secret Garden
and was voted the Nation’s Favourite Public Garden in 2021 We were met by the owner’s grandson and given a map of the 13-acre
gardens which have many unusual trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants as well as a nursery (lots of plants bought to take home), shop and extremely wellrun Tea Room We decided to allow enough time to have a bite to eat before going on to Seaton where we were booked on the 3pm Seaton Tramway tram. A good decision as
with rain no one could sit upstairs and two of our party had to be in the wheelchair access part with no side windows
There were other passengers who also needed wheelchair access and we were lucky there was just enough room downstairs on this tram when it rained or three of us would have got very wet and cold Powderham Castle was only 20 minutes from our hotel The castle has been owned by the same family since 1391and sits on the banks of the River Exe The guided tour is of the ground floor The upper floor can be visited but at an extra charge. They have a good Tea-room in the courtyard and a Rose Garden behind the Castle
Seaton’s seafront is undergoing major building works so was a disappointing visit The single deck tram we were allocated only took 28 – at a push - and by necessity, nine of our group including six less mobile members had to travel on the access tram As it poured
They also have a Secret Garden with a play area and animals a 10 minute walk the other side of the Welcome Centre The Castle’s small Chapel is accessed from the Rose Garden, but we had to make sure we closed the doors as swallows were trying to get in to nest
In the Castle was a quirky portrait of much-loved tortoise, Timothy, who lived to be 160 years old. He (or rather She as they found out much later) was a ship’s mascot in the Crimean War and adopted by the Courtney family at Powderham as a War Hero. On the Thursday afternoon some of us caught the train to Teignmouth, others had free time in Dawlish or relaxed back at the hotel On our journey home we stopped at National Trust’s Knightshayes near Tiverton, a large 19th century gothic style mansion set in beautiful formal gardens and woodland walks. The house was designed by William Burgess for the former Tiverton MP Sir John Heathcoat-Amory When the Trust originally took it over it was for its gardens
The house had been very neglected, and the Trust
was undecided what to do, until they discovered an elaborate ceiling in the Drawing Room which had been covered for nearly a century. It is wonderful. The Dining Room ceiling is inscribed with poetry by Burns on three sides and Chaucer on the fourth. Some of the ceilings are reminiscent of those in Cardiff Castle Over the years we have been to some lovely places but this has to be one of my favourites and worth an enroute stop on the way to or from Devon and Cornwall
Having squeezed South Devon in between Madeira and our next holiday to Imagna Valley, Italy some of us haven’t bothered to fully unpack our suitcases
We have altered the itinerary slightly from the tours we did in 2022 but more of that next issue
Not just for the faithful! A great place to learn about the United Kingdoms cultural, social and political history over the centuries.
