Welcome to this Autumn edition of the Group Travel Today Magazine, following the uncertainty of recent years, 2022 has been a real upturn in visitors for many venues and attractions, the Group Travel Market has played a major role in securing the future of many, Well done all you GTO’s
Heading into 2023, many group travel organisers are still setting their sights on trips here in the UK, the CTA coach operators report that they have never experienced higher demand for travel, although there are other group travel organisers desperate to go further afield once again to foreign climates A place to get all the information for such trips is at the World Travel Market at ExCel London 7-9 November.
Whether you’re a royalist or republican, there was great sadness when it was reported Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 had passed away, it can’t be denied a dedicated public servant who represented this country outstandingly, whatever your politics are.
We understand the Coronation of King Charles 111 is going to be scaled down somewhat, the reasoning is the cost of such an extravagant event would be hard to justify in these times of high inflation and a dramatic rise in the cost of living which particularly affects those on low incomes, you could look at it the other way and say that we British are unsurpassed at putting on
pomp and ceremony watched by the world over, a time to celebrate, an additional bank holiday whereby we can support all our local business’s, venues and attractions
Whatever is decided the argument for both scenarios have merits, there is no right or wrong
In this edition we have features on Planning for 2023, Groups Welcome Here for a Great Day Out, and for those GTO’s wishing to travel further afield a great Flanders Supplement where Andrew Daines talks glowingly of his passion for the area and what groups can see and do.
The lovely Pauline and Ken have been to the Isle of Man with a packed itinerary and travelled even further afield to the north of Italy, a quieter more authentic place and a path less travelled by hordes of tourists And last but not least check out what York has to offer in our Groups

The challenge of luggage space
On the road to Net Zero, many car users are choosing to go electric But what about coach operators? Wendy Hartley-Scarff, chief executive of the Association of Group Travel Organisers, ponders what the future might bring
As the UK’s charging infrastructure improves, so more people will have the confidence to make the switch from petrol and diesel So in this move towards reducing emissions on our roads, what’s happening with coaches and buses?
Government figures suggest that by 2030 there could be between approximately eight million and 11 million ultra-low emission vehicles in the UK By 2040, that figure could rise to more than 25 million Whilst conventional hybrid vehicles (those that cannot be plugged in) will initially form many of these sales, it is expected that plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles (EV) will make up an increasing proportion as technology develops. But as you will know if you have a vehicle that requires plugging in to recharge, it’s the charging infrastructure that needs to be in place to ensure you have confidence to travel longer distances
In March this year the government pledged to provide almost £200 million of funding for 943 zero-emission buses. That cash injection is part of a £3 billion National Bus Strategy to improve bus services, building on a government promise made in 2020 to fund 4,000 zero-emission buses across the country and to end the sale of new, non-zero-emission buses by 2032. Visit any major city, and many smaller towns, and you can already see fleets of modern buses operating silently (well almost) along the streets
Electric buses, and a number of hydrogen and gas-powered buses, are finding natural homes in such operating environments An eighthour charge will give a typical double-decker a range of around 160 miles Schedulers and engineers know that a bus can operate for a whole day and return safely to the depot for overnight recharging overnight However, whilst that is ideal in urban areas, the mileage required to
operate many rural routes puts those routes outside the range of an electric bus One innovative approach being considered is that of ‘opportunity charging’, where a bus can be recharged on route, either by an overhead pantographstyle system, or picking up a charge through the ground.
But what about coaches?
Chinese manufacturer Yutong is currently the only manufacturer of a right-hand-drive fully electric coach (pictured). A small number of these are now in service on private hire and contract work. In Scotland, a small fleet operate on scheduled services linking Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and Edinburgh It’s a step in the right direction You may well be wondering then why we haven’t seen electric coaches being used for coach touring. The answer is one of space Electric vehicles require a battery Large, heavier
vehicles such as buses and coaches need many batteries. On the existing coaches the batteries sit under the floor, taking up much of the space where luggage would go So, for the time being, using a fully electric coach on a tour that requires an overnight stop isn’t practical, simply because there isn’t enough room in the luggage compartment for 40 or 50 suitcases
Over time, much as the charging infrastructure will expand so that coaches can recharge at hotels (and some hotels do offer that service for cars now), so the size of batteries will shrink.
The good news of course is that coach travel is already one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, coming third after walking and cycling Perhaps the focus shouldn’t be on replacing petrol cars with EVs, but encouraging more people to consider taking the bus or coach!

The continuing, amazing adventures of Pauline & Ken, on their travels
ISL E OF MAN – Norman Allen Group Travel
Despite being in the midst of the much-publicised Birmingham Airport delays – and it was bad – we landed in the Isle of Man just 30 minutes late after a short Loganair flight The airline was great. After I had asked Swissport to advise them that I had 5 assisted boarding slow walkers and their partners and there were long queues at the Assisted Boarding desk, they opened up a check-in desk especially for them, earlier than they would normally have done, and even managed a quick cup of tea and a caramel biscuit during the 40 minute flight.
The weather forecasts for the week were iffy but we did get mostly good weather Milntown House and Gardens on the outskirts of Ramsey, where we were staying, was our first visit of the tour It was the ancestral home of the Christian family who lived there from the beginning of the 15th century Our guide gave a very entertaining talk about the house and family including the ghosts who tip the mattress’s up and throw you out of bed It is certainly worth including in
any itinerary and the woodland and formal gardens - which also house a vintage car and motorbike display - are open to the public as well
For our second day we were all given a “GO CARD” which allowed unlimited travel for a day on the Electric Trams, the public buses, and the Steam Railway Most of us caught an early bus to Laxey (as the first tram wasn’t until 11 10am) and went up on the Snaefell Mountain Railway Amazingly, we saw the summit - it is often covered in mist or low cloud. To say it was windy, though, is an understatement. However, a hot chocolate in the café soon warmed us up. The rest of the day was spent riding the trams between Laxey and Douglas and back to Ramsey
For the next two days we had an excellent guide –Andrew Foxon –who brought the places we visited to life and was a fount of knowledge. Over the two days we drove the whole of the TT circuit where the average speed can be over 130mph and bikes can get up to over 200mph on some stretches We also visited Peel and The House of Manannan,
which told the story of the Manx Heritage; a Steam train ride from Port Erin to Douglas ; the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, where once a year the Tynwald Court meet and there is a procession and festivities on the hill site; Castletown where we went to the Old Grammar School – surprisingly larger inside than the outside suggested; Castle Rushen and then a very entertaining re-enaction of a sitting in the House of Keys
We had an early evening flight home, which gave us time to have a meal and look around Douglas during the day. A very enjoyable tour which negated the flight chaos of the first day.
IMAGNA VALL EY, Italy –Suc cess Tou rs
I took two tours to this part of Northern Italy, not yet visited by hoards of tourists. Our hotel, The Mirimonti, at Rota
d’Imagna, is run by the extended Gritti family and we all fell in love with it and the staff, from the moment we got there. Due to the many flight alterations caused by EasyJet, we didn’t arrive at the hotel until after 11 30pm, so the itinerary was rearranged to make sure the first day was as relaxed as possible It started with a short journey to the Cornabusa Cave Sanctuary, which you could see in the distance from the hotel, perched in isolation on the mountainside across the valley This was followed by a meal at a local farmhouse Trattoria – one of the ‘must do’ experiences of any Success Tours Italian holidays Unsurprisingly, once back at the hotel everyone felt the need for a siesta, some in the rooms – all with balconies – and some on the plentiful sunbeds on the terraced hotel grounds.

Sanctuary Cave
The next day was a trip to Bergamo Our numbers for both tours having shrunk to under 30 we were able to have a small bus, which was able to take us through the Augustine gate to the old Upper Town at the top of the hill. There, we were met by our local guide, Barbara, for an hours walk ending at the Cathedral Afterwards it was free time when most of us also visited the Basilica next door. 3 Euro entrance fee unless you are over 70 when its 1 Euro. There were plenty of places to eat, but after a good breakfast and the knowledge that a filling meal awaited us that night at the hotel, most just ‘grazed’ There was also a 13 Euro clothes shop that a few of us found on week one, and almost the whole of the week two people descended on en mass. I
rather expect a ‘Bergamo Babes’ fashion parade at the next coffee morning.
Our free day was spent making the traditional Bergamese Casoncelli in the hotel’s kitchens, under the watchful eye of Gianpiero and his mother in the morning – which we
enough to wander the shopping streets and have a light lunch. You can walk into Varenna itself from the ferry terminal but to do both Bellagio and Varenna justice makes it a very long day
appreciated. Despite the market, the lake frontage was not crowded out by tourists and there were plenty of places just to sit and take in the view No tour would be complete without a local
all enjoyed - and then a pizza meal (cooked in a clay wood-fired oven) in another of the Gritti family establishments, a few minutes walk away After that it was a walk up the hill to the local church or round the village or a relaxing afternoon in the spa or sunbathing on the terraces
A full day excursion to Lake Como was next. Starting from Varenna we took the public boat across to Bellagio for about three hours. Time
Our last day to Iseo on Lake Iseo was, for many, the highlight of the tour For group two especially, it surpassed Lake Como, which they decided, was far too busy with crowds jostling for places on the car ferry and public boats
On Fridays Iseo town has a massive street market in the morning leading from the car parks to almost the lake frontage. We were also lucky that a sculpture exhibition all along the lakefront opened during our stay. The sculptures were based on Greek Myths and called “Double Dream” and much
Sculpture at Iseo
wine tasting Our’s was at the Cascina Carretto. We were given a short talk on the production of their sparkling white and rosé wines before sampling them along with a merlot wine accompanied by local meats and cheeses
The Cascina has diversified and now makes and smokes its own meats and sells honey from its beehives
This tour was one of the most pleasurable I have had to Italy and I will be offering it again with slight tweaks in the not too distant future.

House and Gardens Tour
half a century - will return to its new home of Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 28th January 2023
Chiswick House and Gardens
Chiswick House and Gardens is one of the most glorious examples of 18thcentury British architecture and landscaped gardens, with over 300 years of discovery, inspiration and delight
Two Georgian trendsetters, the architect and designer William Kent and his friend and patron Richard Boyle, the third Earl of Burlington, created the House and Gardens between 1725 and about 1738 Influenced by their travels on the Grand Tour, they rejected the showy, Baroque style fashionable in England, in favour of a simpler, symmetrical design based on the classical architecture of Italy
Together they broke down the rigid formality of the early 18th-century garden to create a revolutionary, natural-looking landscape Whether you want to explore the House or find out more about the Garden and its history their group tours are one of the best ways to bring Chiswick’s story to life.
The best way to fully appreciate the grandeur and history of Chiswick House and Gardens is to take tours of both. They can run the tours back to back or you may prefer a break in-between for refreshments or lunch in their RIBA award-winning Café. Speak to them to create a bespoke package to suit your group. 2–3 hours £200 for up to 10 people, and £20 per additional person chiswickho use andgarde ns org uk

If you want to head out of Douglas, perhaps to visit the Laxey Wheel or Snaefell during your holiday then there are other, just as interesting options The Manx Electric Railway offers a leisurely journey where you can get incredible views of the Manx countryside and coastline and the Snaefell Mountain Railway gets you up to a superb location with a cafe and views out over the six kingdoms.

finishing the last in 1965. That they are still relevant today is testament to the unchanging and unspoilt landscape of the Lake District National Park

y f eing able to tra vel and discover new places and dif f er ent cultur es –and to shar e these experiences with other likeminded people – is an essential par t of who w e ar e. It is also the case that when tourism is done w ell – when visitors integrate with communities in destinations, when they shar e passions and inter ests, then the visitor, ef f ecti vely, becomes par t of the community Nowher e is this better illustrated than in Flanders Fields, the ar ea in the w est of the Flemish r egion of Belgium, wher e many of the fier cest battles of the First World War took place, and wher e the scars of this conflict sur vi ve to the pr esent day
Gr oup tours to Flanders Fields began e ven befor e the end of the First World War, and the r esidents of this ar ea ha ve e ver since been w elcoming visitors wishing to pay their r espects, to commemorate, and lear n fr om these e vents The tw o-year hiatus, without the many passionate visitors fr om the UK and other Commonw ealth nations was tough; gardeners maintained the hundr eds of Commonw ealth War Gra ves Commission cemeteries as meticulously as ever, the buglers of the Last Post Association perfor med the daily cer emony ever y night as usual…but visitors fr om Britain and elsewher e w er e distinctly absent. Of course, whilst the visitors ha ve been away, this period has been put to good use, and much has been under taken to r enovate and impr ove, such as at the Passchendaele Museum and the Hooge Crater Museum, as w ell as at many of the hotels in the ar ea Elsewher e in Flanders, ther e has been extensi ve de velopment w ork too, not least in the city of Antw er p. In Se ptember, after over 11 years, the r egion’s flagship ar t galler y, the Royal Museum of Fine Ar ts (KMSKA) will finally r eopen their doors, with an award-winning , and genuinely stunning , ar chitectural design to display the lar gest and most impor tant collection of ar t in Flanders. L ike most people, the pesky pandemic put paid to any overseas travel plans I had for most of 2020 and 2021, in March this year, however, I dusted down my passport and went on a short jaunt over to Flanders. In many ways this was a fitting return to foreign travel, as I have visited the reg ion on many, many occasions and know this most accessible part of Europe rather well e trip came as a result of an invite from the kind folks at the London office of Tourism Flanders and I needed no second invitation Flanders is only a 90 minutes coach drive from Calais or Dunkirk, is easy to g et to and offers so much to visitors, especially, those from the United King dom.
Ever ywhere you g o the words, Welkom in V laanderen, will greet you, except, that’s not strictly true as prett y much ever yone under the ag e 60 speaks Eng lish and as the ag e lowers the more proficient the level of biling ualism becomes the young , in particular, converse in Eng lish for fun, so it’s more likely to be Welcome to Flanders !
e g enesis for this slig htly truncated edition of the Guide To Flanders For UK Groups (now in its 18th year) came during the aforementioned trip and there were three main reasons Firstly, it is clear that UK group travel org anisers and coach operators are keen to g et their groups back to Flanders e second is how keen Flanders based attractions and hotels are to welcome UK groups back, whilst the third driver is a little more personal A fellow traveller on the three-day educational trip works for a group tour operator and this was her first trip to Flanders, as such, ever ything was new to her - this g ot me thinking . As nearly 20 years have elapsed since the first edition of the g uide, there will be many new faces within the group travel industr y who have not been to Flanders or know little about the reg ion With these people in mind, for this year ’ s edition, the Guide To Flanders For UK Groups will g o a little back to basics and g ive readers more of an introduction to the reg ion and sug g est attractions & accommodation providers that will most
definitely have group appeal
In land mass, think of a slig htly enlarg ed Yorkshire and you ’ re about there, i e it’s ideal for a short break or, say, a week’s tour. Aside, perhaps, from France, those groups with an interest or passion for the Great War will find more historical landmarks and sites in Flanders than in any other European countr y Only those with a heart of stone could not be moved by the intensely moving experience of hearing the Last Post ever y evening under the Menin Gate in Ypres. A stroll among st the headstones at Tynecot Cemeter y affords time for reflection and to consider the futilit y of a war when human life was horrendously expendable. L ikewise, the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 where your group will experience life in dug outs and trenches is hug ely thoug ht provoking Flanders is not just about WWI, of course, and UK groups can ‘lig hten’ the experience by visiting one of the many other attractions which are keen to welcome them. e coastline of Flanders is, as you would expect, reminiscent of Eng land’s east coast and resorts such as Blankenberg e, De Panne, and Ostend offer seaside charm to match anything this side of the North Sea e cit y of Brug es holds it own ag ainst other on planet earth, Antwerp hosts many attractions and museums, the magnificent St Rumbold’s cathedral in Mechelen, Ghent with its medieval architecture are just some of the reasons to visit the reg ion
Br ussels
For those groups looking for the perfect cit ybreak, Brussels is usually hig h on the list not least as it can be reached easily by aeroplane, coach or, my favourite, Eurostar. With so many attractions rang ing from the culturally hig hbrow to the more prosaic there is so much to see and do over, say, a two nig ht/three day mini-break or as part of a big g er tour of Flanders e architecturally stunning Grand Place or Grote Markt with its Baroque Guildhalls offers a great ‘photoopportunit y ’ Also ( but don’t mention it to Mr Farag e !) , the Parlamentarium or the European Parliament V isitors’ Centre is a fascinating insig ht into the working s of this political behemoth A long -time favourite Brussels attraction is Mini-Europe, a stone ’ s throw away from one of the capital’s most well-known sites, e Atomium

If your group hasn’t been to Mini-Europe before, do tr y to include it in your next itinerar y - if for no other reason than that it will bring out the child in all of them, irrespective of ag e A two -hour walk around Mini-Europe is both entertaining and educational and groups can learn about the member states of the European Union and the United King dom, their historical, architectural and cultural wealth ere’s live action, too, as your group could ‘destroy’ a section of the Berlin wall, set off the eruption of the Vesuvius, launch an attack of leg ionnaires or scare the V iking s. ere’s also many interactive live action animations, from the Bells of Stockholm to the Windmills at Kinderdijk it’s a chance to ‘(re)discover Europe as the y possibly mig ht not have done before’
With reg ards to facts and fig ures, Mini-Europe exhibits more than 350 monuments and animations which were selected for their architectural qualit y and their European symbolism. e y are reproduced to the finest detail e Cathedral of Santiag o de Compostela alone required 24 000 hours of work Many statues of the GrandPlace of Brussels are painted with real g old leaves In the Seville arena , 6.000 fig urines were placed, one by one, to attend the bullfig ht e Big Ben is 4 meters tall. At 13 meters, the Eiffel Tower is taller than a 3-store y building . Yet, all the building s are on a scale of 1/25
If you would like a more bespoke packag e for your group, a personalised g uided tour is available and you can book a visit with a professional g uide, who will tailor the approach of the visit and the commentar y according to your group ’ s interests – booking is essential With a seating
capacit y of 250, Mini-Europe’s restaurant is the big g est in the Bruparck and usually offer a menu to any group ’ s taste and budg et Groups with a minimum of 20 persons can enjoy a meal choosing one of the following options : a) e self-ser vice option where your group can enjoy a warm snack or drink or b) Special menus for groups upon reser vation only.
Brussels is, of course, not the big g est of capital cities and many other attractions can be found close by As such, UK group visitors are encourag ed to combine a trip to MiniEurope with any of the many other attractions on its doorstep ; e Atomium, Brewer y Timmermans, Planète Chocolat ! or Trainworld – just to name a few. www.

For obvious reasons, perhaps, we in the United King dom have a love affair with the railways and railway based attractions are always popular with the groups market. Train World is the official museum of the National R ailway Company of Belg ium and is based in the preser ved building s of Schaarbeek railway station and a hang ar built to its north Based in the ‘heart’ of Europe it lies on the route of Belg ium’s first train track, between Brussels and Mechelen e station, is a fine example of Belg ian railway architecture and is connected to the new (opened in 2015) hang ar by the railway g arden. e histor y of the Belg ian railways collection beg ins in the early days of the 1830s, where, following the lead of their Eng lish counterparts, Belg ium looked to establish a railway ser vice e theme is
broug ht up to date with the advent of Eurostar, where it is possible to travel from Brussels to London in only two hours UK groups are particularly welcome at Trainworld and a special group programme can offer ; a thematic g uided visit the temporar y exhibition, Royals & Trains, a g uided visit of the permanent collection and/or a mixed g uided visit of both. e tour takes around two hours, the exhbition lasts until Januar y 23 and numbers per tour must not exceed 20 A popular visit for groups is the one-day programme, where lunch can be taken at the brasserie, RN Express and packag es are available prett y much ever y day except December 25th and Januar y 1st e Trainworld shop offers souvenirs of a visit starting at only €1 and there are also the usual items such as books, posters and stamps etc. A Trainworld audio g uide App can be downloaded which g ives access to complete content. Group rates beg in for 15+ people and further information can be found at www trainwor ld be
As mentioned earlier in the g uide, one is never far away from reminders of the Great War and out of posthumous respect to all of those who fell, perhaps it is best not to attach the label, ‘attraction’, to those sites which commemorate four of the darkest years in world histor y. A journe y to the reg ion wouldn’t be complete without paying homag e to one of those sites and here are some sug g estions
A trip to Flanders should include a visit to the cit y of Ieper/Ypres and its environs, as there is so much on offer and an ideal starting point is the In Flanders Fields Museum. " eir name liveth for
evermore ' are the biblical words the famous writer Rudyard Kipling selected for Sir Edwin Lut yens ' Stone of Remembrance But can we commemorate for evermore ? Walking throug h the landscape of Flanders Fields, you inevitably come across the militar y cemeteries of the First World War. More than 100 years aer the armistice and long aer the persons who knew the fallen personally have passed away, the numerous war graves remain as last witnesses. In the temporar y exhibition "For Evermore" (29/04/202318/02/2024), the In Flanders Fields Museum pays attention to the creation and evolution of the commemorative landscape but why do we commemorate the war primarily throug h its dead ?
Despite the unpreparedness of the various powers at the outbreak of the war for the larg e number of war dead, there was an unprecedented massive use of individual burials It led to the creation of numerous field graves and cemeteries in the war landscape. Althoug h several org anisations, such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, were established, the concentration of these field graves and even smaller cemeteries was necessar y e exhibition hig hlig hts, among other thing s, the (chang ing ) locations of cemeteries, the processes of concentration and the oen forg otten mobilit y of the bodies that this entailed. Moreover, the exhibition g ives a prominent place to multivocalit y, a core value of the In Flanders Fields Museum It raises the question of who is less or even not visible at all in the contemporar y commemorative landscape, such as civilians, black fallen soldiers, those shot at dawn and non-European ser vicemen. In addition, the exhibition shows
6
how contemporar y commemorative tourism came into being and tells the stor y of the pilgrimag es undertaken aer the armistice by family members and veterans, among others
e exhibition introduces you to a number of hidden g ems in the landscape of Flanders Fields and the emotional stories that these places hold Despite the uniform appearance of the cemeteries, both a unique histor y and the personal st yle of the architect responsible characterize each cemeter y. "For Evermore" is the ideal starting point to discover the commemorative landscape of Flanders Fields with a backpack full of stories in the framework of the 2023-theme year ‘ e stories of the landscape !’ . Furthermore, the additional podcast and the For Evermore app create an enhanced emotional experience in the former war landscape. More ( practical ) information about a group visit to the museum and the landscape of Flanders Fields can be found on the website www inf lander sfields be

officially opened on 11 November 1998 in the presence of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Irish President McAleese and King of the Belg ians Albert II. Another reason for founding the Peace V illag e Hostel was the presence of the 'International School for Peace Studies' which opened its doors in Messines in 2001. e g oal was to bring Irish young sters from different backgrounds tog ether and talk about who their grandfathers foug ht side by side during the First World War.

And finally...beer!
Beer and breweries are ever ywhere in Flanders –
whether a multi-national g iant such as Inbev (think Leffe, Stella) or a smaller affair such as St. Bernardus – this hoppy nectar is ubuiqitous At Café Mort Subite (translate it, if you dare !) in Brussels the y claim to have around 2000 beers on offer !
Breweries are always make for a great group visit and the tasting at the end of tour affords the opportunit y to g et to know ever yone in the group a little better a word of caution, thoug h, from someone who has done it...Belg ian beer can be much, much strong er than its UK counterpart !
At Bourg ogne des Flandres in Brug g e, groups can find out more about hops and the brewing process, learn how to tap beer dig itally and take a bottle with your picture on it back home Of course, at the end of the tour you will g et a free Bourg ogne des Flandres and enjoy a wonderful view of the Brug es canals www anthonymar tin be/en
