The Vikings are in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings. This week, Cleveland State will travel to Butler on Wednesday (Oct. 26) before a nonleague match against Canisius on Sunday (Oct. 30) at Krenzler Field.
WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings concluded
their fall schedule last weekend, as they competed at the ITA Midwest Regional. The duo of Maria Lazaris and Catrine Bjerrehus led the Vikings, as they became the first CSU tandem to reach the round of 16 in the main doubles draw at the regional event. Kara Sherwood and Alex Power each won their opening match in the singles qualifier draw for CSU, while the duo of Mengdi Liu and Power also won their first round match in the doubles draw. Overall, the Vikings posted six singles wins and four doubles victories at the regional tournament.

The Vikings are three points ahead of seventh place Green Bay and Loyola and just three points behind fourth place Wright State and one point behind fifth place Butler. CSU defeated Youngstown State, 2-1, on Thursday and played to a 0-0 tie with Detroit on Sunday.
CROSS COUNTRY HOSTING LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Cross country takes center stage this week as the Vikings will host the 2011 Horizon League Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Valleeview Farm in Gates Mills, Ohio. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. CSU has been out of action since its regular season finale on Oct. 14 at Penn State when the Vikings ran a 6K. Last season, the Vikings finished sixth of 10 teams at the league championship, CSU’s highest finish since the 1996 squad placed sixth. It was also the first time in program history that the Vikings finished ahead of at least four teams at the league championship.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING For the second consecutive season, the Vikings defeated perennial Hori-
zon League power Green Bay, besting the Phoenix 137-106 on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon. Carys Behn, Joanna Olsson and Alice Sommerville all had a hand in three victories while Kacey Cummings swept the diving events to help CSU claim all but two events. With no competition scheduled for this week, the Vikings will return to action on Nov. 4 when they travel to Columbus to take on Denison, Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
Green Bay, 158-84, on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon in the Horizon League opener for both teams. Nathan Grant, Justin Kermack and Graham Thoresen all picked up two individual titles. The Vikings, 2-0 in dual meets, are off from competition until Nov. 4 when CSU travels to Ohio State to face off against the Buckeyes, Denison and Virginia Tech.
WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings finished their fall season by placing fifth of seven teams at the Zippy Invitational on Oct. 17-18. CSU shot a school-record 312 in the final round, besting the old mark of 315 set in 2008. Junior Ariel Sparrow led the Vikings, tying for 16th place with rounds of 89-73. Her second round 73 was one shot off the school record. All seven of CSU’s players broke 80 in the fall and set or tied career lows.

TAYLOR VIDOVIC: The women’s soccer sophomore scored both goals in CSU’s 2-1 win over Youngstown State and now leads the team in goals (6) and points (13). CATRINE BJERREHUS & MARIA LAZARIS: The tennis duo became the first team in program history to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regionals, picking up two wins.
