ACROSS THE INVISIBLE WALLS Re-establishing the axial relationship of hill, city & water beyond built infrastructure arise from city expansion in the West District By unraveling layers of historical transformations and instilling site-specific interventions at/with the Invisible Wallsthe flyovers and retaining walls resided from city expansion from 1960s onwardsthe project intends to establish a form of connectivity that relates events, reprioritises the experience of flâneur and enhances the potential of neighborhoods without overdamaging the essence of place. The expansion of Hong Kong island city center could be understood to have shared the same morphological expansion as that of the development of European cities. Yet through reclamation and flattening of the hill, our city boundary expands outwards to the sea and inwards to the hills as Invisible Walls, confrontal not to any enemies, but to our inherited geography. While the city was founded initially on a continuous ground with a rectangular grid system that arrays along the coastline and periphery of the hills, the hills and the water were originally the genius loci of the land. As the city expands, The original intimate axial relationship with the natural landscape diminishes.

Across the Invisible Walls The thesis proposes Sai Cheung Street as a testing ground to introduce an alternate way of addressing axial connectivity the hills and water, with a balanced prioritization between pedestrians and traffic; new infrastructure and the existing fabric; and between nature and man-made. Observing the sections across Western District, Sai Cheung Street at Kennedy Town shows a relatively early state of development of the natural topography. The man-made and artificial is clearly-distinguishable as the hill have yet to be completely depressed with an underground air raid tunnel. While the classical axial grid could be observed at north, it is almost the only point where one can travel thoroughly from the inner city to the waterfront without the hovering flyovers.

However, a feasibility study report was disclosed in November 2017 to convert the space into highways and cross harbor infrastructures which connects East Lantau Metropolis (ELM) to the island. It will mean a replica of the inaccessible waterfront condition in Central or Sheung Wan, which computes a higher priority to traffic than to pedestrian experience.

Following the logic, the crucial point of manipulation is at the nodes where the frontal or rear walls intersects with axial streets. By identifying tangible enterprises in the community, site-specific strategies are imposed to create event space, frame vistas and accentuate the inherited qualities of between the hills, the water and the neighborhood.

Across the Invisible Walls The experience of duality is interwoven through the columns that puncture through the landscape. They are designed as columns that support the walkway, as well as hollow shafts that provides ventilation and light favorable for the re-adaptation of the air raid tunnels. The dimension of the walkway is carefully adjusted such to allow with recreational activities and space of lingering; while the tunnels are connected to newly inserted underground programs.

The journey is marked by threshold or vista inbetween each places as a response to revive the view of streetscape

The project investigates into with the segmentation of the three layers of existing and reclaimed urban fabric (Queens Road, Connaught Road and the waterfront) in order to re-establish a more intimate inter-relationship between the inner city and waterfront of Western District of Hong Kong Island. Extensive mapping was intended as entry into unfolding the complexity of the issue. The scope was eventually narrowed down into the design of a particular connection strip at the Western Food Wholesale Market.

Ongoing project- The Walled-In City

In Hong Kong, the development of the island’s city centre shares the same morphological expansion as that of the development of European cities. Yet through ‘reclamation’, our city walls expand outwards to the sea through as invisible borders confrontal to our inherited geography. As phases of reclamation proceed, layers of archaeological strata accumulate across the section from the hills to the current water front- an increase bigness of city grains, infrastructure and a deviation from intimate fabric to iconic representative forms. The old boundaries are marked by ‘boulevards’ (e.g. Queen’s Road & Connaught Road) that connects the city transversally. Heavy infrastructure dominates the new parcel of reclaimed land, of which one could argue disintegrating the new strips from the previous fabric. Functioned under an extreme capitalist model, the notion of Land Reclamation in Hong Kong is almost a mere equation of the craving desire of creating extra land out of the sea physically. At the reclaimed edge from Wan Chai to Shek Tong Tsui, real space for the people are fighting in tension with packed governmental utilities, transportation and logistic terminals, privatized towers and structures with diminishing usage. How could we relink the layers of fabric using the ‘bigness’ at the waterfront such to re-establish the intimate relationship between city and water? How can we reactivate the 14% vacant Western Food Wholesale Market with it surrounding?

THE WUNDERKAMMER

The open house is for an ‘Urban Collector’, a visiting scholar, and public guests. Designing through urban deductions and narratives

THE MUSEUM OF INNOCENCE ISTANBUL, TURKEY Pamuk first began to collect objects for the museum in the mid-1990s. “I wanted to collect and exhibit the “real” objects of a fictional story in a museum and to write a novel based on these objects,” he said. Pamuk states that some of the objects displayed in the museum are from family and friends, while others were found elsewhere in Istanbul, or collected from around the world. However, he has not specified which of the objects are directly linked to his own life; he maintains that the narrative of the museum should reflect that of the novel and not his own.

Reflective Nostalgia- The Wunderkammer #1 Urban Memories Objecthood- The first phase of the project looks into a stall in Cheung Chau, a fishery island in Hong Kong. The less-than 40 sqm stall was split into two, one side selling fresh fishery; while the other side selling dried seafood. The varying types of stocks are densely organized and displayed. Seemingly chaotic, but in fact intentionally arranged. Inter-relationship/flow- It is an open yet saturated urban condition. Ownerships are not clearly distinct. Objects define the space as much as the walls do. Not bounded to space, they act as phenomenal hints of the relationship within the urban fabric. Fishermen get fisheries from the sea to provide fresh stockings to the wet stall. Dead fishes are dried near the shore or roof, and eventually be packaged and sold in the dry stall. Box storage, production tools and resting chairs scatter around. Activities flow among objects that are tightly associated with the walls. #2 Urban Narratives The second phase was founded on the book “對倒”. The book revolves around two seemingly opposing characters in parallel conditions. Paradoxically encountering the same incidents yet never met, they have different reactions to what happened- imaginary to the future or nostalgia to the past. Sets of drawings were created to represent the spaces of parallel existence- which are combinable to form a bigger reality and paradigm. Though the characters are having different expression towards same incidences, I interpret them having the same essential qualities- the rejection of an unsatisfying ‘now’, an unsettling escape backwards or forward.


Reflective Nostalgia- Wunderkammer #3 Urban Domesticity “Wunderkammer” As one wanders in these local markets or stalls, ways of how goods are display almost reminds us of the experience of ‘Wunderkammer’‘Wunder’ meaning ‘wondering’ ‘Kammer’ meaning ‘cabinet’ The Cabinet of Curiosities is a space of encyclopedic collections of objects whose categorical boundaries were general and yet to be defined. Items stored are in state of transition between intuitive marvel & recognized knowledge, implying a certain ambiguity and blurriness of defined boundary and space. Objecthood and curiosity then becomes the drive to guide through the flowing between space.

Fins and Hybrids From Phase 1 and echoing with Phase 2,method of stall displays are elementary, formed by the same basic elements, but diverge to adapt to functional situations. The wall conditions are redefined by ripping off typical shelf arrangements into fins. By leaving or filling in the voids with different materials, different permeability conditions are created. Based on that, hybrids are evolved. The cabinet of curiosities eventually evolves into a room defined by fin armatures. Structurally extending from the lower floor to the upper floor, each sets of fin walls owes a varying change vertically or horizontally, incorporating furniture, storage or displays.

Reflective Nostalgia- The Wunderkammer Furniture The design of the furniture is an extra piece following the architectural logic. The set comes in a dual with a same basic framework but different expressions according to functions. Minimizing support as a pure elementary structural steel frame, the study desk focus on ‘parts’- the making through addition; while the make-up desk focus as a ‘whole’- the making through a prefabricated whole. The resultant is a twin of top- versus bottom- heavy.

I am his first employee in the start-up. Our main project was set in one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Bavaria on the east bank of the Ammersee- Andechs Monastery. The client is looking for a cheap and aesthetically simple design for its Flaschenlager and FĂźllerei located at the subregions forest.

L’Abri & The Rejected Stone We live betwixt and between. Between life and death, history and future, the heaven and the earth, the decided and undecided.

TIMBER ADDITION MASONRY EXISTING FORT

The French word L’Abri means “shelter“. Based on a model began 1955 in Switzerland, where a Christian couple to open their alpine home for youngsters to find life answers, the new L’Abri positions between an international study centre, a residential community and a retreat for the deep search of blissfulness in everyday survival and communal work. The project explores ruin as an vessel of the presence of man which contain morphological and anthropological memories. By unleashing the materialistic presence of the ruined abandon fort at the edge of Brean Down, a new layer of experience is added to the pilgrimatic pursuit of earthly-spirituality. The impartation of modern meaning to the fort’s structure also challenges our notion to understand architectural process as creating completely new artifacts and ideas. It proposes that architecture could be an evolution of existing structures and as a continuation of the urban archeological strata.

Pictures in the Park: The Circus

The idea of the project is to reunite the City of Bath with the currently under-used Parade Gardens by mediating the boundary between the two. Placing the building towards the South West corner of the gardens, the deserted “Bog Island” is re-imagined as a central performance space with a retractable roof for multiple functions under all weather. The city boundary is pushed slightly into the garden recreating a new plane for social gathering, markets and performance; while the gardens are pulled underneath and elementally incorporated into the complex. The institute and the cinemas stand boldly as sculptural elements on the parade. Street furnitures are designed and integrated architecturally with skylights, planters, ventilation shaft and etc. The project works in co-operation with student engineers such to achieve a holistic integration of architectural, structural, environmental and regulatory considerations.

It is hoped the design would evolved into a hospital with centralized layout, which contains the most widespread courtyard space, the shortest flow, as well as the most convenient transport links. Project continue the practice of the gardenized space. Garden elements are spread and penetrated into all parts of the hospital as much as possible, and introduces various shallow wells to make 7. buildings integrated with natural scenery. In order to create an efficient medical hub, 7. each part of proposal adopts the centralized layout to ensure that the flow of patients are climatically protected and does not confluent with the flow of medical staff.
