Despite what you’re hearing in the news, all is not lost It is all around us - reports of economic turmoil, a declining housing market and failing financial institutions. It’s easy to get discouraged and wrapped up in all the media attention. What you don’t often hear is that there is still money out there to be lent and

there are still solid financial institutions with good loan programs and rates to offer. Even though we mostly hear of the failing By Jon paukovich Ent —

institutions, there remain several out there that chose to stay away from sub-prime loans and, because of that, are still going strong.

So, as a REALTOR®, what should you look for in a financial institution before handing over your client? First, you must know who you are doing business with. In these times, it is more important than ever See Financial Institutions page 8

Woodmen Expressway

Commuters to enjoy speedier drive soon

Traffic is now flowing over the newly-finished westbound Sand Creek bridge between Black Forest Road and Marksheffel Road.

The overall purpose of this project is to widen Woodmen Road from its current 2-lane condition to a 4-lane expressway classified facility over a 6.2 mile stretch from Tutt Blvd (just east of Powers Blvd) to US Highway 24 in Falcon. A new frontage road system will accompany it to provide safe access for the businesses and residents on the south side of Woodmen between Black Forest and Marksheffel. Two new bridges (above) are being constructed spanning Sand Creek just west of Marksheffel. Pedestrian access will be provided under these bridges connecting to an enhanced trail system on the north side of Woodmen Road.

“Since the initial phases of Banning Lewis Ranch, the largest master planned community in the history of Colorado Springs, are located within a quarter mile of Woodmen Road, the widening of Woodmen Road will be of significant benefit to the residents of our development,” says John Cassiani, VP of Project Operations for Banning Lewis Ranch. “The east-west mobility in Colorado Springs has always been a challenge, but with the improvements to Woodmen Road, and the traffic it now has to handle daily, this road will become one of the best east-west routes in the city allowing easy access for our residents to I-25. When the construc-

tion is completed, the time it will take from I-25 to Banning Lewis Ranch will be about a 12 minute trip, making the Ranch easily accessible for anyone travelling to or from the interstate.” This is a $17.3 million project funded by El Paso County with Federal Aid and the Woodmen Road Metropolitan District. The El Paso County Department of Transportation is overseeing the project and R.E. Monks Construction is the prime contractor. Most of the project will be completed prior to the end of the year with final paving planned in Spring of
