We provide Marriage/Relationship Counseling and EDMR therapy to assist with issues related to grief, anxiety, anger, and trauma.

by Don Short

On the morning of August 23, 2000, my son Ben and I flew out to Seattle, WA to attend a wedding. My wife, Nancy, stayed home here in Scott, LA because my son Joe was home for a couple of weeks after spending the summer as one of the leaders on a Teen Missions team to Mongolia. He also had two friends that came with him for this two-week vacation, one was from Oregon and the other one was from Brazil. Joe loved Tabasco sauce and wanted to go visit the Tabasco Factory at Avery Island. He would take Tabasco sauce with him when he would go on mission trips with Teen Missions to add some spice to his food. Late morning, Joe, with his two friends, along with Nancy and Chris, our other son, headed for the Tabasco Factory.

flatbed truck coming from the other direction would fall asleep and lose control of his vehicle. His vehicle, would crash through the guardrail and cross over into the oncoming traffic. My son Joe, who was driving the car, tried to move out of the way, but was unable. He and his friend Paul were killed instantly and my wife and the other two passengers in the car received multiple injuries. Our pastor called me on my cell phone to inform me of the accident and of Joe’s death. My life as I knew it at that point also ended. Joe was only 20 years old and had spent his summers for the past several years serving God on various mission trips around the world. My life, the lives of my wife and children were changed forever. How does one go through a tragedy like this? All I know is that the support of family and friends in our church, the many prayers and kind words and the counseling we received help sustain us at this difficult time and as we continue our journey today. Today as a Christian Licensed Professional Counselor, I help many who are going through the process of grieving the loss of their loved ones and I can help you too. In Joe’s memory, we donated money to Teen Missions to build a much needed school in Madagascar. Joe’s legacy is living on and God’s love is changing hearts and lives through the programs and services provided at this school. October 2014
