The Crystal Lagoon – the largest in the world as verified by the Guinness Book of Records – is also in keeping with the natural environment that surrounds the resort. The vision was to create an Arabic-inspired resort that reflects its Egyptian heritage but successfully appeals to clientele from East and West. The legendary ‘La Voile Rouge’ brings the exclusive feel of Mediterranean haven Saint-Tropez to the shores of the Red Sea, while ‘La Croisette’ recreates the exclusive haunt of the rich and famous as visitors and holidaymakers saunter, stroll and sample the high class options of stylish shops, delicious dining, nightclubs and entertainment. tart at Crystal Lagoon, which is guaranteed to be an irresistible focal point for every visitor to Citystars Sharm El Sheikh. Crystal Lagoon, the largest manmade lagoon on earth as confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records, is 120,000 square metres of an incredible oasis surrounded by desert. These marvellous crystalline lagoons are specifically created for leisure, swimming, sailing and water sports. Crystal Lagoon has created a beach paradise while remaining faithful to the ideals of green technology and the welfare of our world. Crystal Lagoon uses just two per cent of the energy consumed by traditional filtration systems and vastly fewer chemicals than are used in traditional swimming pools. Citystars Sharm El Sheikh was the ideal setting for the project. Citystars captures the essence of the historically rich Sinai Peninsula, the wonders of the Red Sea, the beautiful mountain backdrop and the architectural heritage of the whole of the region ‌ and the Crystal Lagoon is faithful to maintaining this image.

The aura of exclusivity has always attracted stars of the ‘silver screen’ and Royalty to SaintTropez. A ‘Who’s Who’ of the elite included Princess Grace and Brigitte Bardot, Bruce Willis, Karl Lagerfeld, Elton John, Clint Eastwood and Robert de Niro among an endless list of the ‘glitterati’. Now at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh, ‘La Voile Rouge’ will create new legends from its own exclusive island in Crystal Lagoon. Yes … a catwalk along which the models sashay and display the latest trends. F

ew golfers have a reputation to rival that of Colin Montgomerie … a multiple tournament winner on the international circuit, captain of Great Britain and Europe’s 2010 Ryder Cup winners and a familiar face to the millions who follow the game on TV. Now Montgomerie has brought his ‘champion’s touch’ to creating a golfing heaven at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh with the flagship 18-hole Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Montgomerie Golf Course and a nine-hole desert course nestling between the ravines and hollows of the Sinai Mountains. Montgomerie’s design company is one of the most sought after in the world and at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh he has employed his philosophy of working with nature, drawing on his Scottish

heritage to absorb influences from the home of golf at St. Andrews. His experience has enabled him to create a fair challenge for the mid-handicapper and an exacting one for the top golfers with lakes, bunkers and twisting fairways testing their skill. Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Montgomerie Golf Course has a unique setting. There are others that nestle the sea with a mountain backdrop, but not with the breathtaking Crystal Lagoons alongside. His blueprint stresses the vital role maintenance plays in protecting the beauty and condition of the course. Montgomerie promises a “total experience” for the golfer. “Above all else, golf should be enjoyable and, whether played in leisure time or business time, they should leave the course challenged but satisfied.”

‘La Croisette’ ... outstanding restaurants, stunning cuisines Black & Blue is an intriguing 21st Century reworking of the classic Chicago steakhouses, a favourite haunt of Roaring Twenties gangster Al Capone. ‘Big Al’s’ favourite hideout can still be found on the shores of the Fox River, 40 miles west of Chicago. Capone and the ‘bootleggers’ have not survived but the classic cuts of steak have stood the test of time and wait for you at Black & Blue on ‘La Croisette’… including double cut Filet Mignon, prime rib-eye and single cut prime New York steak. The ‘off steak’ menu is equally irresistible, with strip boiled sea scallops, grilled lobster and Atlantic salmon among mouth watering signature dishes. The setting is a high class yet moody atmosphere that would have made Capone feel at home. Subtle lighting reflects from black glazed bricks while deep brown furnishings and fittings complete the ‘clubby’ atmosphere. Maybe the day-long DJ music would not have been Capone’s style … but the large bar would have been the perfect fit. Bushra, like Black & Blue, reflects the vision of Raymond Visan, whose worldwide creations include Buddha Bar, Barlotti, Barrio Latino, Barfly and many more. Bushra captures the sensual and mystical allure of the East that has intrigued the imagination of writers, poets, artists and architects for hundreds of years. The restaurant and bar embraces the designs, colours and nuances of the East with a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine to match the exotic and colourful heritage of the region in a beguiling blur of taste, sound and atmosphere. Matt and Gabumon, TK and Patomon, Kari Kamiya … if you are a fan of Manga and ‘Japanimation’ then ‘Sue She’s’ at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh is a must stopover on your culinary exploration of the resort. There is more on the menu than delectable sushi and sashimi as the cartoon characters dance across the floors and walls from video screens, neon lighting flickers over tables, diners and traditional Japanese light wood textures. Music pumps out to fill the atmosphere with energy and excitement. Zukkabar brings an intriguing blend of Mediterranean and Caribbean cuisine in a hip and neo-tribal atmosphere, spiced up by dancing, entertainment and themed dining. Cultures collide and unite while the past and present merge in a ‘time warp’ that bounces between modern and retro. Fresh ideas bring new dimensions to Mediterranean dishes, which share the menu with delectable Caribbean island cuisine … always served with perfect service and a smile.

La Voile Rouge from Saint-Tropez to Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Mr. Arnaud Guilloteau told CS Magazine, “This new La Voile Rouge will display the spirit of nature with wild design, antiquities and works of art. You will feel at home at La Voile Rouge no matter where in the world you come from.”

day and night party place where people come first to enjoy a late lunch of high class French Mediterranean cuisine, then lay down and relax on the white sandy beaches in front of the magnificent lagoon. But with the sunshine, the engaging music, the drinks and the tanned skins, the atmosphere will imperceptibly move towards a joyful party atmosphere where people meet and socialise in an informal way.

Opening of “La Voile Rouge” in Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Tell us about the history behind ‘La Voile Rouge’ For three decades, the beach club ‘La Voile Rouge’ in SaintTropez has embodied what makes this village in the South of France world famous: a place where something is always happening and the world’s most glamorous people meet to party in a relaxed atmosphere. As manager I hope I have been delighting the international clientele of ‘La Voile Rouge’ of SaintTropez for over 10 years, and now we are opening the Citystars Sharm El Sheikh version of the successful French beach club.

What is your role at ’La Voile Rouge’? I like to think I am there as more than just a manager; I am the life and soul of this very special Saint-Tropez atmosphere. I have French flair, I hope, and know how to select the right mix of guests and put them at ease to allow them to fully enjoy their days and nights. I know my guests are used to the world’s most fancy and luxurious places, but also that they sometimes strive for moments where they don’t have to parade and just want to be themselves. I

Explain the philosophy behind ‘La Voile Rouge’ Like in Saint-Tropez, ‘La Voile Rouge’ in Citystars Sharm El Sheikh is more than a traditional beach club: It is a private club, a

know the trends ahead of fashion; I learn them from my exclusive guests and they know they can trust me to predict the trends. What else is there for guests at ‘La Voile Rouge’? ‘La Voile Rouge’ at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh provides guests with the atmosphere, facilities and surroundings to fully concentrate on enjoying themselves. It offers a shopping area with luxury brands for guests who want to browse away from the social whirl and, finally, a relaxing area with massage services if a guest feels tired after too much dancing or partying. Mastering the Architectural Dream‌ An Exclusive Interview with Godwin Austen Johnson With many successful projects already under their belts, the renowned architects Godwin Austen Johnson have been commissioned to produce one of their most amazing projects to date - Citystars Sharm El Sheikh. Their experience in the creation of landmark destinations is well known as they are the brains and pencils behind the famous Dubai Creek Golf Course and Yacht Club, the One & Only Royal Mirage hotel in Dubai, Bab Al Shams desert resort and many other marvels. Godwin Austen Johnson talks exclusively to CS Magazine about their architectural manifestations in Citystars Sharm El Sheikh.

You are famed for your wonderful creativity, so please tell us what inspired your extraordinary designs and themes for the Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences.

Middle East and to be able to appreciate the subtle details and the richness of the design throughout the resort. How have you created architectural styles and themes that appeal equally to visitors and the owners of Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences?

Citystars Sharm El Sheikh was a perfect project for us and one which we have relished. The sheer size, scale and ambition of the project and the wonderful setting of Sharm El Sheikh were inspiration enough for us to develop the design. We have tried to capture the essence of the setting; the historically rich Sinai Peninsula, the wonders of the Red Sea, the beautiful mountain backdrop and the architectural heritage of the whole of the MENA region were all key drivers in the design.

Our belief is that the quality of the built environment is an essential part of the economic and cultural fabric of society, in which the very best architectural approach plays a central and intrinsic role. All the Residences are what we believe to be a marriage of modern design with strong Arabic influences offering owners and visitors a stimulating environment to live, play and relax.

Please give us your thoughts on the different styles and themes at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences and how they reflect the various tastes of the clientele.

Which aspects of its design and architecture make Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences unique?

The vision was to create an Arabic-styled resort in keeping with its Egyptian location, while also appealing to a wide range of different clientele from the Arab world, Europe and further afield. As mentioned above, the architectural references are drawn from the entire MENA region and we have therefore designed the buildings in a number of different Arabic influenced styles to add richness, variety and detail to the development. We wanted visitors and owners to appreciate where the resort is specifically located as well as its wider location within North Africa and the

The whole notion of forming new residential and resort communities around the huge Crystal Lagoons is something very unique. The majority of the resort developments in Sharm El Sheikh are focused on coastal sites leading down to the beach and sea. What we have created at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh are purpose-designed neighbourhoods with their own private beaches, lagoons large enough for water sport activities and private swimming pools located in an elevated mountain setting, with distant views towards the coastline and Tiran Island. E

A

S

U

R

E

S

&

How will the style and architecture of Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences blend harmoniously with the eco-friendly lagoons?

Tell us about the other architectural creations that have helped to build your reputation. GAJ is an award winning practice and is now in its third decade of operating in the Middle East and our influence on modern Middle Eastern architecture has been pervasive. GAJ’s body of work includes some of Dubai’s most recognisable and iconic buildings. The Dubai Creek Golf Club was the first building in Dubai whose physical presence was matched by its status as a local emblem – so much so it features on the 20 dirham note. Arguably it was GAJ that set in motion a countryside trend in the UAE to incorporate traditional Islamic themes into modern architecture. Bab Al Shams and the Arabian Courtyard, Residence and Spa at The One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel remain testament to this.

The design of the residential development is based on creating a community. With such a large master plan – as is intended through all the phases – creating smaller more intimate communities is essential to the success of the whole project. This way, residents don’t feel overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the development, but rather feel part of each individual precinct. The lagoons help enormously in creating this sense of ownership and community as they each have a series of apartments and residential units clustered around them. The apartments in phase 1 are all built around a landscaped courtyard, which in turn opens onto the lagoon. Each of these courtyards is also further linked to the adjacent courtyard, creating a sense of place to each residential block and yet also a sense of a shared amenity.

How is the inspiration behind your love of architecture reflected in Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences?

the bones of a very exciting development. All it then took was to locate these different components and to weave the residential communities around them.

Simply put, in the way the architectural components do not overwhelm the development, but rather help to complement the external courtyards and the lagoon, creating an integrated development set within a park like environment, offering the best possible experience and amenities to the residents. After all, this is what we are tasked to design - not to create architectural masterpieces, but to create an integrated resort type of community.

How does your development meet the social, commercial, cultural and recreational needs of the visitors and residents to the resort? The development is designed to offer residents and visitors generous external spaces, both private and public for social interaction. There are courtyard gardens, some with children’s play spaces, and others with seating areas, swimming pools and pool bars as well as private beaches stretching along the length of the Crystal Lagoons offering plenty of opportunity for social and recreational interaction.

How did your initial vision approach the task of developing this massive 7.5 million square metre area? The initial vision of the land has to be accredited to the client, whose instruction to us was “To bring the sea to the mountains”. Being essentially a coastal resort, with most of the existing developments spread out along the water’s edge, developing a piece of land 6km from the coast was challenge enough. Utilising the ‘Crystal Lagoons’ technology and product enables us to do exactly that, creating crystal clear water, suitable for swimming, boating and other related water sports with approximately 2km of pristine beaches added to the perimeters. Combine this with an 18-hole Colin Montgomerie designed golf course, and one has

The lagoon is large enough to allow various different water sports; sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are all viable. Around the lagoon is a continuous path allowing jogging, walking, cycling and even rollerblading. At the heart of the development is a retail zone La Croisette, which offers a more public realm with a choice of bars, restaurants both indoors and outdoors as well as shops and a supermarket.

Lastly, congratulations on your success in winning the award for Citystars Sharm El Sheikh at the Cityscape Abu Dhabi 2012 event. How much does this award mean to GAJ?

Within the lagoon is an exclusive island restaurant ‘La Voile Rouge’ for the more adventurous socialites. Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Residences have a unique position nestling between the mountains and the Red Sea. How did you ensure the development blends seamlessly with this spectacular natural arena?

We were thrilled to have attended the annual Cityscape Awards in April at the prestigious Yas Viceroy Hotel in Abu Dhabi as guests of Citystars. The evening was made even more rewarding to see Citystars' Kim Semiao and Keith Gavin, Partner at GAJ take to the stage to receive the award for Best Residential Project - Future with Sharm El Sheikh. We are also delighted that the project received a ‘highly commended’ in two further categories of Mixed Use Project – Future and Best Urban Design & Master Planning. We feel that these are much deserved for not only the design content but also the achievements and efforts by all involved to help create such a mega project.

What we have tried to do is use the wonderful natural environment surrounding the site as a backdrop to the development. The mountain-scape is very dramatic and during the course of the day offers a very stimulating visual backdrop with changing colours and shadows. The Red Sea on the other hand offers a fantastic view and horizon to the project. The landscape design for the project has tried to create oasis type courtyard gardens with lush vegetation offering shade and comfort against the strong sun, the areas between buildings and external spaces are more arid, reflecting the desert location and using species more prevalent to the natural environment.

REAL ESTATE MENA

It is hoped that the landscape will encourage the local fauna to inhabit the new habitats, again integrating the development with the local environment.

A Divine Creation at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh Fernando Fischmann, Chairman and Founder of Crystal Lagoons Corporation, which is building the world’s largest lagoon in Citystars, Sharm El Sheikh, talks exclusively to CS Magazine about the lagoon – its recreational attractions and the lagoon’s positive impact on the environment and property values. After many years of study and travel around the world, Mr. Fischmann, a biochemist and real estate developer, invented a unique technology to create constantly clear Crystal Lagoons of unlimited size where people can swim and indulge in water sports. Crystal Lagoons Corporation’s pioneering concept and state-of-the-art technology has been patented in 150 countries.

What inspired you to create the Crystal Lagoons concept?

water quality we now have the most successful project in that part of the world and a new coastal feature was created.

Well, I’m a real-estate developer in Chile, and about 17 years ago we bought land on Chile’s central coast with the idea of building a resort that served the entire community. The problem with the location is that the sea there is dangerous with two currents, plus it is very cold. So we had the idea to build a lagoon and I searched the world for new technology. I wanted to create a crystal clear lagoon, not the typical lagoon which has mercury with algae and can produce bad smells and so on. I initially built a lagoon with technology bought from another country but the lagoon turned green. I went to Australia, the United States and Germany and everyone told me it is impossible to have a lagoon that size in crystal clear condition. I’m a scientist and bio-chemist, so I conducted my own research for about seven years until I developed my unique technology. Thanks to this change in the

What difficulties faced you after opening the first Crystal Lagoon, in terms of people’s reaction, difficulties with the water, technology etc? Well it was a big problem because I bought the technology from a very well-known company with expectations that there was going to be turquoise-coloured water in the lagoon, where we could bathe and enjoy water sports. But the reality was that after 15 days the water in the lagoon turned absolutely green. For several years we had many problems; we had to empty the lagoon several times due to problems of unpleasant smells. It was really challenging because we couldn’t find anybody in the world to solve the problem, so the first years of this project were extremely difficult for me.

E

A

S

U

R

E

S

How long did it take you to find the solution for these problems?

Which water and beach activities are featured at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh?

Well it was a major challenge because everybody told me it was impossible. Basically we developed a highly sustainable technology with up to 100 times fewer chemicals. We employed a sophisticated system of pulses, sensors and a filtration plant based on ultrasound which uses 50 times less energy than traditional filtration processes. Therefore the combination of the two concepts has created a lagoon which is totally crystal clear as we have used sustainable energy and hardly any chemicals.

The perfect quality of the water means people love to bathe in the lagoon. Even those who never practice water sports do it here because it’s safe and clean. You will see small children paddling, small sailing boats, windsurfers and we also have some electricpowered boats that take visitors from one side of the lagoon to the other. We have also created an area for the restaurants and the nightclubs so there will be a lot of activity in and all around the lagoon.

Please share with us your worldwide success, which now includes Egypt among your destinations.

How big are the Crystal Lagoons and beaches at Citystars Sharm El Sheikh?

After we mastered the technology and the first project became a huge success we entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest swimming pool in the world. Since then we have received a huge amount of media coverage. Our website has more than 2,000 reports from people who came from all over the world to see our new project. I decided about four years ago to expand this concept worldwide and the growth has been exponential. Today we have about 200 projects around the world in different stages and will have many more in the future. Egypt is a very interesting market for us and we have formed an excellent relationship with Citystars Properties. The project at Sharm El Sheikh is of very high quality and there are some facts about the Middle East project which are very important. We use salty water from the desert which has no other use. We are also building projects in the desert where the land has little value, so from the two resources of the desert land and salty water from the desert we are creating a kind of paradise. So we are very happy with that.

Today we have many lagoons around the world and the Guinness Book of World Records still shows our first lagoon at San Alfonso as the largest. But now the Guinness world record will go to Sharm El Sheikh because the first lagoon was eight hectares and the one in Sharm El Sheikh will be about 12.5 hectares, so it is very impressive. Also the lagoon at Sharm has slopes, not walls, around most of the perimeter which create the very natural feeling of an island ‌ something that is extremely attractive and interesting and really quite divine. A great deal of investment has gone into this high quality project.

What impact will the world’s largest Crystal Lagoon have? There will be a lot of media coverage, because having the largest Crystal Lagoon in the world in Egypt will attract media attention and bring a lot of people who will be very impressed. So I am sure that when this opens the eyes of the people in Egypt and probably throughout the Middle East will be on this fabulous lagoon.

The Malte Collection by Vacheron Constantin, distinguished by its tonneau-shaped models, has always given pride of place to an array of horological complication, encompassing regulator, tourbillon, dual time-zone, moon-phase, power-reserve, chronograph, openworked movement versions. The Malte collection is now welcoming an exceptionally understated model displaying the hours, minutes and small seconds, which for horological purists represents one of the most demanding stylistic exercises. The Malte small seconds is a traditional timepiece featuring a simplicity equalled only by the refinement of its harmonious curves. It comes in an 18K pink gold case measuring 36.7 x 47.6 mm. The hour-markers and the 12 and 6 o’clock Roman numerals, also in pink gold, have been redesigned so as to smoothly follow the new curve that has been given to the tonneau-shaped case. Stamped with the Hallmark of Geneva www.vacheron-constantin.com/ Jaquet Droz – The Eclipse Ivory Enamel Effecting aesthetic choices in favour of purity, subtlety, classic motifs and powerful design codes, the Eclipse Ivory Enamel celebrates the best of luxury watchmaking and house craftsmanship, starting at the dial with its Grand Feu enamelling. Specific to the brand, this ancient technique requires our artisans to carefully monitor and perfectly control the kiln temperature, the key to producing this disc with its unique colour and grain. This "blank page," which has a subtle beauty of its own, features eight stars – eight being the favourite number of the house – and a moon engraved in red gold. While the day and month appear in two apertures at the top of the dial, an elegant serpentine hand surmounted by a crescent moon points to the date numerals, set at intervals at the edge of the red-gold case. This same path is taken by the Lancine hours and minutes hands, whose tapered profiles and classic lines underscore the remarkably harmonious design of this timepiece, mounted on a precious alligator strap. http://www.jaquetdroz.com/ Jaquet Droz – Grande Seconde Off Centered Ivory Enamel With the Grande Seconde Off-Centred Ivory Enamel, Jaquet Droz combines classic watchmaking tradition with the imagination that has become a house trademark. A milestone in the history of the Manufacture, the Grande Seconde features two dials that, intertwined, form the number eight, a house leitmotif. One dial indicates the hours and minutes, the other tracks the passing of the sixty seconds in a minute. The size of the seconds hand and the incredible fineness of its profile evoke the myriad opportunities lying dormant in each passing minute. http://www.jaquetdroz.com/ Vacheron Constantin - Vacheron Constantin Malte Lady With the Malte Lady, Vacheron Constantin pays tribute to all those with a preference for diminutively sized watches, who are thus treated to the Malte Lady featuring a curving 28.3 x 38.7 mm pink gold case housing a quartz movement, Calibre 1202. Franck Muller’s research and development department has once again shown extraordinary expertise and vision by carrying out such a remarkable technical achievement.Due to the large tourbillon, much more power is required in the watch. Here, it is powered by four barrels. The barrels are first paired in series to double the operating reserve; they are then assembled parallel to one another so that the power of the movement is doubled. The barrels, with a diameter of 16 mm, are 4mm wider than the traditional ones resulting in the almost constant force needed to operate the Giga Tourbillon. Another special feature is that this exceptional movement has been reversed, with the bridges placed on the dial side, the hour setting and winding section located at the base and the hour hand uniquely positioned on top of the minute hand. In order to ensure a 9-day operating reserve, displayed at midday, (traditional winding by the crown), the Giga Tourbillon has been designed to feature four barrels, in comparison to traditional tourbillons which generally are powered by only one or two barrels. As the name implies, the special feature of the Giga is the very large 20 mm diameter Tourbillon occupying half of the watch. A skeleton version which combines aesthetics and rigidity reveals a highly technical mechanism with perfectly balanced style. www.franckmuller.com mode , the first calendar-display watch adjustable to the nearest 1/6th of a second, and the first Grande Sonnerie model to faithfully reproduce the tune chimed by Big Ben. Another distinctive feature of the Duomètre line is the arrangement of the dial displays, which reflects the dual structure of the Dual-Wing concept. An hour display off-centred along the 3 – 9 o’clock axis; twin indications of the respective power reserves; hands in two different colours; grained silver-toned finish: all these fascinating details combine to endow each of the Duomètre models with a unique aesthetic and a strong identity. The Dual-Wing concept is reflected on the dial by the presence of two separate zones: to the left sits the opening revealing the secrets of the Sphérotourbillon; and to the left the main dial indicating local time and the date, subtly placed on a lower level all around the dial. An additional 24-hour subdial occupying the upper part of the dial serves to display the time in another time-zone, while the small seconds appear in the lower part. Only the expertise accumulated over 178 years could thus enable Jaeger-LeCoultre to begin writing a new chapter in the history of Fine Watchmaking… www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/ DeWitt Twenty-8-Eight Skeleton Tourbillon T8.TH.008 DeWitt did not set out to design an ultra-thin skeleton Tourbillon but wanted a Tourbillon in a watch where the focus was in the strength and structure of the cases. 70/71 Savage Rivale Roadyachts GTS The Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS is an incredible machine. It’s designed for riviera cruising, as a result, it looks sensational with upwards rising doors, hinged at opposite ends, creating perhaps one of the most striking features of the car. Similarly, the periscope convertible roof also has a unique action with a telescopic arm which retracts the five glass panels that make up the roof and packs them neatly into a rear compartment. The inclusion of a turbocharged 6.2 litre V8 power plant just adds to the opulent feeling of the Roadyacht. Power is rated at a staggering 670hp and 720Nm of toque which provides a snarling soundtrack to fit the showboating looks. This is fitted to a chromoly chassis (a mixture of chromium, molybdenum, carbon and iron) which allows a total weight for the road yacht of just 1,345kg! The best thing to compare that to, we think, is the MercedesBenz SL65 AMG which has less power, a smaller engine and only two seats. That weighs in at a portly 1,950kg! 0-100km/h time is 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 330+ km/h. Only twenty Savage Roadyacht GTS’ will be built with six already spoken for. The price is a considerable 411,750 euros excluding taxes. www.savagerivale.nl/

Piaget Altiplano Skeleton Ultra-Thin Piaget is the undisputed master of ultra-thin introducing an intriguing new model with some very impressive features. And its a "double record holder." That indicates it has the thinnest self-winding skeleton model housing the world’s thinnest self-winding skeleton movement (2.40 mm). The Piaget inhouse produced just two Calibre 1200S models. 40mm thick whilst the whole case is just 5.34mm thick. Creating the Calibre 1200S required more than three years of research and development. The stylistic effect is based on the alternation between matte surfaces – sunray brushed or sandblasted – creating a contrast with the polished angles and the varied rhodiumed or black colours. The in-house design and execution does not stop with the movement. Piaget is one of the few companies that also produces its own cases. The Piaget Calibre 1200S is housed within a 38 mm-diameter white gold case specifically designed and developed to accommodate it. Approximately 44-hour power reserve. The Piaget Altiplano Automatic Skeleton retails for $60,000. http://www.piaget.com/ TAG Heuer TAG Heuer RACER - the 1st luxury phone crafted for high performance. Ferrari F12 Berlinetta The new F12 Berlinetta is the result of a cooperation between the Ferrari Styling Center and Pininfarina. It looks to carry over design elements from the Ferrari FF and the Ferrari California. The F12 Berlinetta gets a 6.3 litre V12 engine with a maximum power output of 740hp, which translates to a specific output of 118hp per litre. Torque reaches a peak of 690Nm, 80 per cent of which is already available at just 2,500rpm. The red line is at 8,700rpm. The engine is mated to the F1 dual-clutch transmission, which has closer gear ratios. Ferrari also opted for two innovative solutions: the first of these is the Aero Bridge which uses the bonnet to generate downforce by channeling air away from the upper part of the car to its flanks where it interacts with the wake from the wheel wells to decrease drag. The second is Active Brake Cooling, a system that opens guide vanes to the brake cooling ducts only at high operating temperatures, again reducing drag. The F12 Berlinetta boasts a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.1kg/hp. The result is that the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 12-cylinder accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds and from 0 to 200km/h in 8.5 seconds. It also completes a lap of the Fiorano circuit in 1’23”, faster than any other Ferrari road car. The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta has a top speed of over 340km/h. 280/300 000 euros http://www.ferrari.com/ Aston Martin Zagato The V12 Zagato is the pinnacle of the Vantage range. It is also the latest expression of a successful creative collaboration that has given rise to a series of striking GT cars over the last half-century, the original and most iconic of which being the DB4GT Zagato. V12 Zagato combines the modern ideas, materials, processes and technology pioneered on One-77, while remaining true to the purity and craftsmanship of its illustrious forebear. Creating each V12 Zagato is a painstaking process that takes approximately 2,000 man-hours to complete. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand crafted aluminium and carbon fibre mixed with the 510-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 means it will be one super fast – and ultra rare – supercar. 74/75 Rimac Automobili Concept One Efficiency, extremely fast response, wide power band, compact size, regenerative braking, high torque... Those are just some advantages of the new permanent magnet synchronous motor generation which is developed exclusively by Croatian automaker Rimac Automobili for the Concept_One. The unique powertrain is divided into four sub-systems, each consisting of one motor, inverter and reduction gearbox. Each of those systems drives one wheel, completely independent one from the other. Sophisticated ECUs control each of those systems using the input of many precise sensors placed all over the car. This architecture allows a new approach to vehicle dynamics. We call it - All Wheel Torque Vectoring (AWTV). Each wheel can independently accelerate or decelerate hundreds of times per second, helping to achieve the desired (driver selectable) handling. Together with the very low center of gravity, extremely high torque available almost from zero RPM and the lack of shift interruptions, the Concept_One delivers a completely new driving experience. Asking $1 million for each example, Rimac has ensured exclusivity by saying that just 88 will be made, reports Motor Authority. Concept One will enter production in 2013 and will also pick up special tires co-designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The tires are made by Vredestein and come from the Ultrac Vorti series, with Giugiaro’s input, and are aimed at high-performance uses. The front is equipped with 245/35 R 20s, while the rear is shod in 295/300 R 20s. Wheels are a lightweight monoblock-type made by HRE. Importantly, while the EV supercar can accelerate from 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 190mph, it also has a range of up to 372 miles. The impressive range is courtesy of a 92kWh liquid-cooled battery, although it won’t reach its maximum mileage if incessantly thrashed. www. rimac-automobili.com/ Maori 50 Open Maori Yachts is a luxury open motor yacht builder, featuring vessel with high performance and continued stylistic research. For this time piece, Cabestan uses only a single crystal to cover its engine instead of two crystals as we have seen on the Winch Tourbillon Vertical time piece. This crystal

The Spano has a top speed that’s said to be over 218 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds. For a car that only weighs 2976 pounds, we think these are some pretty incredible numbers. The car is estimated to be around 600,000 Euros which converts to about $800,000. Production will be exclusively limited to only 99 models. www.gtamotor.com/ TAG Heuer Mikrogirder TAG Heuer Mikrogirder 2000 Concept watch- a dual-assortment, ultra high-beat watch with a Chronograph beating at 7.2 million times every hour, meaning that the watch can time events to 5/ 10,000th of a second. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the new TAG Heuer Mikrogirder is not that TAG Heuer have put out a watch twice as fast as the Mikrotimer- it’s the fact that they’ve done it with a movement that- again- reinvents mechanical movements. As you’d expect, the party trick of the Mikrogirder is the flying central chronograph hand, which rotates twice 20 times per second- twice as fast as the Mirkotimer. TAG Heuer talk about the movement in terms of being accurate to 5/10,000th of a second, rather than 1/ 2,000th of a second. Same thing you might say, but the claim is that for the first time it is possible to break apart the 1/ 10,000th fraction of time. The dial has an attractive anthracite finish, with the case matched to a rubber strap similar to the one used for the Mikrotimer. surpasses the edges of the high-tech watch case, enhances the distinctive visual linage that is unmistakably Ferrari. On the sides, a special magnesium alloy was used to create likenesses of race car wheels and the lug nuts that are emblematic of pit stop tire changes during Grand Prix races. The vertical tourbillon, designed and engineered by master watchmaker Eric Coudray. The vertical tourbillon movement has been designed this way to compensate for variations in the balance amplitude due to the effects of gravity. As you probably have seen (and can see on the picture below of another Cabestan masterpiece), there is a miniature chain that delivers the energy directly to the movement. A constant force is being delivered to the tourbillon by using a 6 speed automatic transmission. Overall indicators for the watch are the time with seconds, and a power reserve indicator. Ferrari is notoriously picky in the items they allow to have their name on it. Cabestan originally didn't expect for the project to go through - but the design and base watch impressed the Ferrari people enough to green light the project. As you can see on the rear of the watch, it is limited to 60 pieces. $300,000 www.cabestan.ch/ Piaget Polo The Piaget Polo is not just a luxury timepiece born in 1979. onaco lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps on the French Riviera with an area of just 1.98 square kilometres and a coastline of

about 3,829 metres. Monaco has a resident population of around 32,000 and is the second smallest independent country in the world, after the Vatican.

B ut what it lacks in size Monaco compensates for in glamour, glitz, chic and sophistication and a thrilling cosmopolitan atmosphere. The resident population may be small… but it comprises at least 125 nationalities. Monaco is home and destination for the world’s wealthiest, partly due to its attraction as a tax haven with no taxes for residents.  The most famous ‘quarter’ of Monaco is Monte Carlo, the epicentre of glamour that acts as a magnet for the ‘beautiful people’ who are synonymous with the restaurants, casinos, luxury hotels and the famous Grand Prix. But the Principality is not a haunt only for the rich and famous who fit into the ‘ultra rich’ demographic. Bars, bistros and smaller restaurants still provide wonderful food and a captivating atmosphere and vantage point to watch the world pass by ... there are more than 150 restaurants. The climate, location and sights make Monaco the perfect stopover for a weekend break or longer stay. Many tourists visit the city-state to try their luck at the tempting Monte Carlo casinos where their strict dress code for gambling demands coat and ties for men and formal wear for woman.

Saint-Tropez... the legendary village

O

nce a simple fishing village, Saint-Tropez now sits among the world’s most glamorous and still charming locations and is the ‘must-see’ destination on the French Riviera. Since the 1950s, Saint-

Tropez has cultivated an international reputation as a jet set playground, drawing movie stars, models and billionaires from around the globe. The harbour is a haven for many of the world’s super yachts, attracting a wealthy, transient population to the streets of what was once a sleepy, fishing village. Today, the resort is a fascinating synthesis of jet-setters, artists and traditional village life, all overlaid with a population explosion during the summer months. It is the most celebrated   resort in Europe and remains one of the few places on the planet where stars and the mega-rich gather in abundance.

n attractive aspect of shopping in Saint-Tropez is the totally relaxed and ‘laid back’ atmosphere in the stores; despite the highest quality

merchandise shoppers are not bothered by security men watching their every move. From the most famous designers from around the globe to local designers, high-end fashion and exclusive boutiques, cheap and funny clothes to the most expensive... shopping in Saint-Tropez has it all. If boutiques and designer outfits are not your thing or you simply fancy experiencing Saint-Tropez on a more ‘local’ level then their world renowned markets offer a fascinating and pleasant alternative. Place de Lices is open on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and is the perfect way to spend a morning investigating local foods, rosé wines, antiques, shirts, handbags and so much more.

Entertainment Day and Night St. Tropez offers unique entertainment day and night around the clock. Parties start on Pampelonne beach at venues such as ‘La Voile Rouge’ or ‘Nikki Beach’. Pampelonne beach is the epicentre of the daytime frolics at Saint-Tropez and the ‘people-watching’ is the best of anywhere. Booking in advance is absolutely essential and try for 1pm. At Saint-Tropez you party late, which is to say all night long. It’s drinks after dinner, then showing up for clubbing at 2am is so much cooler. Everyone migrates to Les Caves du Roy at the heart of the luxurious Byblos Hotel, VIP Room, or maybe the slightly friskier Papagayo. It’s common to buy a €690 bottle of Champagne and spray it over the crowd (or you could drink it!). English is commonly spoken, as the night time lingua franca. And ‘un bar after’ (‘un after’) is the - usually calmer - place you repair to after leaving the nightclub, for a final drink, a final dance or even an early breakfast.

WOND ERFUL EGYPT by CS

FLAVOUR OF EGYPT

Bejewel yourself throughout the lands of the Pharaohs

The Egyptians wore regular clothes but always wore elaborate jewellery. The personal jewellery was worn for ornamentation and to show how wealthy the person was. Some of the jewellery included earrings, bracelets, anklets, rings and beaded necklaces. The gems the Egyptians put in the jewellery were garnet, onyx, turquoise, amethyst, and lapis lazuli. They also added copper, gold, and shells. Egyptians also wore necklaces of colourful beads and amulets. They thought that wearing jewellery brought good luck.

The miners of Ancient Egypt believed the Goddess Hathor watched over them with a loving eye, holding out her arms to protect them as they toiled among the rocks and beneath the mountains of Sinai. These Egyptians braved the harsh environment of the Sinai, trusting in the Goddess Hathor as they scoured the landscape for beryl, lapis lazuli, malachite, amethyst and - most treasured of all - the stunning prizes of turquoise and gold. At Khan El Khalili Treasures on the 4th Floor of Citystars the heritage and traditions of those miners come to life for today’s visitors to the luxurious surroundings and atmosphere of Cairo’s landmark retail and leisure complex as they shop for antiques, jewellery and semi precious stones. The miners’ legacy is preserved by the priceless treasures and jewels that adorn the tombs, pyramids and sarcophagi that draw travellers to Egypt today. Think of those men as you stroll through the Khan El Khalili and lift ‘baubles’ from one of the stalls. And now there promises to be a rebirth of Egypt’s gold mining efforts with echoes of the past. All of Egypt’s existing gold mines, over 100, were worked during Pharaonic times and are set for new investment. The Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority predicts gold mining could grow to account for 5-6% of Gross Domestic Product over the next two years. Hathor would no doubt smile at yet another example of how Egypt endures; she, after all, has seen it all before. In 1160BCE, the oldest map showing mines was drawn by the ‘scribe of the tomb’ Ammenhahkte for Ramses IV’s expedition to Wadi Hammamat in the Eastern Desert. The expedition’s purpose was to collect behken (sandstone) to create statues of the king. The history of turquoise mining stretches even farther back in time and must hold a special place in the heart of Hathor, revered by Ancient Egytians as the “goddess of turquoise”. Archaeologists believe the Sinai’s earliest settlers 8,000 years ago were miners, drawn to the region by abundant turquoise and copper. The miners worked southwards from one deposit to the next and by 3500BCE had exposed the great turquoise seams of Serabit El Khadim. They hollowed out galleries into the mountains, carving a representation of the reigning Pharaoh at each entrance. Turquoise was used in sacred scarabs and jewellery or ground into pigment to be used in painting walls, ceilings, reliefs and statuettes. The temple to Hathor was continually enlarged from the 12th Dynasty to the 20th as new mining expeditions unearthed the fabulous riches. Turquoise and gold symbolised the splendour and glory of Ancient Egypt, and now gold mining is back on the agenda, over 3,000 years since Ammenhahkte drew his map for Ramses VI. At Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars gold, silver and semi precious stones are always ‘on the map’ as you stroll between the stalls and shops in our present day reincarnation of the souks, bazaars and markets that make Egypt a treasure house for visitors and travellers.

CAIRO’S JEWELS Jewellery, perfumes and fragrances have seduced the senses throughout the ages. They have captivated Egyptians and attracted travellers to the Middle East from the time of the Pharaohs until … well today, when tourists explore souks, bazaars and the stalls and shops of Cairo’s Khan El Khalili to find their own ‘treasures’. At Citystars we have the best of both worlds! The glamour and mystery of the ‘Khan’ is brought magically up to date in our own Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars on the 4th Floor of the shopping centre. This is the luxurious way to browse the stalls and experience the authentic atmosphere of the market place … but in a cool, comfortable environment. And with so many places at hand to stop for lunch, coffee or refreshments including the perfectly themed restaurants, what could be better? Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars has everything to conjure up images of Ancient Egypt … among 75 shops that include a goldsmith’s souk, bazaars and stalls. There are authentic Oriental handicrafts and materials, plus perfumes, antiques and semi precious stones that make ideal gifts. Louly, Mekka Stores and Marly Silver are among the stores in Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars that transport you into the world of semi precious stones … forming a link with the men who mined the deserts and mountains for the precious metals that play a vital part throughout the rich tapestry of Egypt’s cultural and religious history. Jewellery plays a leading role in religion – though more in some than others – and following this trail is another fascination in searching for evidence of Pharaonic, Islamic and Coptic faiths among the jewellery gems at Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars.

The Pharaohs used jewellery to project their wealth and power, for this life and the afterlife. They depicted sacred images in jewellery motifs such as scarab beetles and other sacred images. They adored gold and bronze while lapis and turquoise were prized because of the colour blue’s association with royalty. Legend, though, says that green emeralds were Cleopatra’s favourite and were mined at the Wadi Sikait. Beads, amulets, necklaces, wrist and ankle bracelets, brooches, clasps, coronets, girdles and earrings have travelled through the centuries since ancient times and can still be found in Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars, and create a glorious kaleidoscope of colour. But when you pick up a bracelet or necklace of red stones … remember the deceased were often buried with red gems or coloured glass to satisfy the god Isis’s need for blood! Modern day Islamic jewellery features many traditional items, such as bracelets, wristbands, necklaces and amulets, in gold and silver, often dripping with precious or semi-precious stones. The pure art form of calligraphy and the beauty of the Arabic script also play a role, but not only with passages from the Qur’an or references to Allah.

The message can be inspirational, celebratory and highlight special dates such as birthdays or weddings and graduations … or even carry a few lines from a favourite song or the name of your loved one. Coptic Christians use jewellery to symbolise their faith, most notably in the intricate, silver Coptic Cross. In the Fourth Century they were traditionally formed from a wax mould which was then destroyed to make each cross unique. As silver became increasingly available, craftsmen grew more adventurous and developed a design of endless interwoven lines to symbolise eternity. The decorated Virgin Mary is also central to the Coptic faith, most famously seen locally among the icons in Cairo’s Hanging Church. The Virgin Mary’s image also features on pendants, bracelets, medallions and other jewellery items. This legacy provides a visual feast today among the stalls and shops of Khan El Khalili Treasures Citystars and throughout Egypt’s bazaars and souks.

OUD …THE ESSENTIAL ESSENCE Egyptians have always prized their perfumes and fragrances and none more so than Oud, known throughout the centuries as ‘liquid gold’. And today you can follow its trail of captivating scents to the perfume shops at Citystars. Oud is created by a ‘trick of nature’, when a fungus attacks the Aquilaria tree, setting off the production of the dark, aromatic resin inside the heartwood, known as Agarwood. Out of maybe 100 trees, just a handful will develop oud. The story begins in the Far East, where the Aquilaria tree is found mostly in India, Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia and Brunei. For many Egyptians and Caireans the story continues at Citystars, where Arabian Oud and Abdul Samad Al Qurashi are among the shops selling the fabulous products deriving from the resin and the wood. Oud’s history and aroma is unique in the world of perfumes and fragrances. Agarwood and its essential oil are mentioned in one of the world’s oldest texts, the Sanskrit Vedas from India. Chinese chroniclers in the Third Century mentioned the production of Agarwood. It is documented that a Vietnamese trader who bought one pound of the oil for 15 taels in Vietnam sold it for 600 taels in Nagasaki, Japan.

Today oud is among the world’s most costly resources, its value having increased by 500 per cent over the last 20 years … hence the name ‘liquid gold’. Its fame spread westwards, reaching the Middle East and Europe, and Arabian Oud today has 560 stores in 50 cities throughout 30 countries across the globe, with two in London including the £2.5million flagship store on Oxford Street. Legends of heroes and heroines inspired the founder of Abdul Samad Al Qurashi to seek out the ingredients that captured the mystery and wonder of the lands around him. The evidence can be found today at Abdul Samad Al Qurashi in Citystars, where master blenders create inspiring new scents that are as enchanting as the lands that once inspired Abdul Samad Al Qurashi. Today oud comes as oil for perfume or to create incense as the wood is burned … this is the fragrance that creates the welcoming atmosphere into many Egyptian homes. Oud (sometimes in Arabian ‘oudh’ or ‘aoud) is highly valued by perfumers for its sweet, woody, aromatic and complex scent. It is used in forms of oud oil (dehn al oud) or resin (oud mubakhar). The oil of oud, whether extracted by distillation from wood or by melting the resin, is non-irritating and can be applied directly on the skin, or added in a perfume most often as a base note. Over the past 10 years oud has approached the level of obsession with the world’s leading brands … White Aouds and Black Aoud by Montale, Oud Royale by Armani, Oud Wood by Tom Wood, Leather Oud by Dior and Arabian Nights by Kilian to name just a few. Liquid gold indeed …

24 Hours in Cairo Most tourists who come to Cairo want to visit the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, which are remarkable inspiring experiences. But what else might visitors do? Here we suggest an alternative, equally rewarding experience for taking in the wealth of culture and history in Cairo.

9:00 AM

9:00 AM

A relatively quiet and clean area, Old Cairo was once the Roman stronghold of Babylon and is home to three of the major world religions. Cairo’s oldest neighbourhood is the ancient heart of the Coptic Christian community featuring five original churches, the first mosque built in Egypt and the oldest synagogue. There’s excellent shopping for tourists and friendly guides.

8:00 PM End a perfect day with the perfect ending: a visit to Khan El-Khalili Treasures at Citystars. Its captivating exquisite shops and specialised bazaars offer antiques, gifts, perfumes and the very special Kenoz Restaurant.

8:00 PM

6:00 PM

6:00 PM

Take a taxi the few minutes to Zamalek Island, which bustles day and night. One of the most sought-after residential areas of the city, Zamalek is favoured by trendy upscale shops and art galleries. The restaurants are good, some on boats permanently moored at jetties on the Nile.

11:00 AM The medieval Citadel is one of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare, as well as a highly visible landmark on Cairo's eastern skyline. In the 12th Century, Saladin ruled and fortified the area to protect it from Crusader attacks. Since then the Citadel has served as a royal city and imposing fortress.

11:00 AM

1:00 PM Without the River Nile, Egypt would not be as we know it. For many millennia, the Nile has been Egypt's source of life, water, transportation and inspiration. The river flows from as far south as tropical Africa and cuts its way through the Sahara and through Egypt before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. Take a stroll along the banks of the Nile, which has stunning views of Cairo. The Nile has a number of bridges. Walking across them is enjoyable as you can see boats, feluccas and floating restaurants, as well as taking in a view of the sky.

1:00 PM

On the Corniche, take a riverboat around the islands of Gezira and Zamalek. You will see some lovely Fish Gardens and the Cairo Tower. Or ask to go to Roda Island and see the Nilometer, which measured the Nile’s annual floodwaters.

swimming pools, a shopping mall, beautifully landscaped parks, children’s play areas, gymnasiums, a wide variety of exquisite restaurants, coffee shops and entertainment.

Katameyah is one of the fastest growing and most attractive suburban areas in Cairo and rejoices in clean, fresh air and a wonderfully invigorating environment. Katameyah’s location between major highways and bridges means it provides easy access to Heliopolis, Nasr City, Maadi, the Mokattam Hills and Downtown Cairo.

Le Reve truly is in a world of its own.

Le Reve proudly sits as one of the most prestigious compounds in Katameyah; a mere six per cent of the compound has been built on, leaving the remainder as pure, unspoiled and unadulterated greenery. This 115-acre compound comprises 90 luxurious villas in a spectacularly beautiful residential community.

Escaping from the dusty hustle and bustle of the city has never been easier. Listen to the breeze rustle through the palms as you breathe in the clean air. Be enveloped in a sense of wellbeing as you relax in the gardens.

Completing the picture is the luxurious Citystars Katameyah, which is located right next to Le Reve and will serve its residents with a wealth of choices that include a five star hotel and spa,

TIMELESS BEAUTY Remember the day when all you asked of your sunglasses was that they cut out the glare? And as long as your ‘specs’ enabled you to read the small print or pick out the traffic heading your way, who cared what they looked like? Does anyone remember that far back?

Now of course they are high fashion. Is it any wonder? Looking through the stands at such Citystars’ stores as Baraka and Maghrabi the names that leap out are a ‘who’s who’ of the world’s legendary makers of jewellery and the finer things in life … Cartier, Chopard, Montblanc, Fred and Bvlgari to name a few. The Prince of Wales hailed the three Cartier brothers as Jewellers to Kings … King of Jewellers’ ahead of his coronation in 1904 as Edward VII. The future king ordered 27 tiaras for the coronation and gave them the Royal Warrant as suppliers to the Royal Court. And the brothers nurtured the world’s most exclusive clientele by embarking on adventures to add to their craft and the legend that became Cartier. Pierre went to Russia to research the finest enamels to compete with Peter Carl Faberge. Jacques headed East to India and returned with the jewels of the Maharajahs and set them in exclusive Cartier creations. Louis revolutionised jewellery by introducing platinum. Today their eyewear also displays the signature elegance that displays the inimitable Cartier grace, style, chic and personality. Aged just 24, Louis-Ulysses Chopard founded his company in Geneva in 1860, initially specialising in precise pocket watches and chronometers and it was almost another 100 years before they launched jewelled timepieces for ladies, pendants and their ‘Happy Diamonds’ range. Today the art and creativity that highlights Chopard jewellery finds new expression in eyewear with unique and strongly individual styles. The Montblanc range of eyewear displays the qualities that have been the hallmark of their name throughout the years … effortless sophistication, exquisite taste and timeless elegance. Strangely the inimitable Montblanc style was born when a Hamburg stationery trader, a Hamburg banker and a Berlin engineer decided to form a company to make fountain pens. In 1936 Fred Samuel opened its first boutique in Paris. Avant-gardist, he created jewels that matched fashion… luminous, daring and elegant, rejecting clichés and included Marlene Dietrich among his clients. The superb ruby necklace set with diamonds, worn by Julia Roberts in ‘Pretty Woman’ was his creation. Fred’s luxury eyewear can feature precious metal frames from 22ct gold or palladium, subtly adorned with precious stones, pearls and diamonds.

Chopard Felopateer Palace Tel.: 24802277 / 24802299 Location: 2-310 / A-302

Since 1884, Bvlgari has set the pace for Italian style in jewellery, watches and accessories. Bvlgari glasses display absolute class and sophistication with their use of high quality lenses and frames. Names such as Cartier, Dior and Chopard have traditionally merged the worlds of jewellery and timepieces with sublime artistry, but Citystars is also home to stores such as Felopateer Palace which specialise in other famous name watches. The Swiss company Rolex have turned their creations into status symbols and are the world’s largest brand of luxury watches. Co-founder Hans Wilsdorf came up with the name ‘Rolex’ in 1905, saying he wanted one that would be easily pronounced in any language – already with an eye on the world market. Breitling’s watches have earned a reputation for being fashionable and rugged and are favoured by pilots; Hublot’s iconic gold watch from 1980 was the first ever designed with a black rubber bracelet; Parmigiani won the 2006 ‘Watch of the Year’ award for their driving timepiece based on the Bugatti Veyron supercar; oversized watches are the hallmark of Dutch company TW Steel, formed by father and son Jordy and Ton Corbelens in 2005 and now the chosen wristwear of

But it was ‘Khawater’ who had steadily built up audience support throughout the season as they fascinated viewers by performing stunts and dance sequences with ultraviolet props and costumes against a stunning black background.

Group leader Mamdouh Khadry said: “Our goal is Las Vegas. If we go to Vegas we don’t need to go the world, the world will come to us."

The second season of Arabs Got Talent attracted talents in different fields from all over the Arab world. The final episode showcased 12 finalists, among them a Jordanian music teacher who invented a musical instrument out of a straw, a Lebanese male opera singer, an Egyptian circus performer, a Moroccan percussion collective and a Syrian pop dancer.

“Winning the ‘Arabs Got Talent’ title is a big responsibility and we’re determined to make Saudis and Arabs proud of us.” The 13 young men share 500,000 Saudi Riyals ($133,000, 800,000EGP) although it will be a tight squeeze fitting all of them into another part of their prize, a racy Chevrolet Camaro!

The distinguished panel of judges included famous journalist Ali Jaber, singer Najwa Karam and prominent comedian and actor Nasser al-Kassabi. The judges politely claimed that all the finalists were deserving winners. Asked if they had any favourites from outside of the top three, Jaber said he was “particularly impressed” with opera singer Maxim Al Shami and Moroccan dancing troupe La Hala King Zoo. The panel of judges are as much a part of the spectacle as the performers. Lebanese Ali Jaber is the Simon Cowell equivalent, who became notorious as the original show’s ‘acid tongued’ critic when it was launched in 2007 as Britain’s Got Talent. Najwa Karam, the Lebanese songstress, is always pumped up to enjoy seeing the new talent on show. Nasser al-Kassabi is the star of the hit show Tash ma Tash. Arabs Got Talent broadcasters MBC spokesperson Mazen Hayek revealed that all 12 finalists had been signed up to exclusive music, production and publicity deals. The ‘…Got Talent’ programmes have become one of the most successful TV franchises in recent times, and are now screened in more than 40 countries worldwide frequently being ranked as the No. 1 show with viewers. As in all of the shows globally, scouts and producers for Arabs Got Talent search for amateur performers with that special quality that can turn them into international stars.
