The Globalization of Student Achievement: A Comprehensive Comparison of Alabama’s Youth to Their National Peers: Part I Sonja Harrington Weston Alabama State University Abstract The purpose of this research was to examine the state of education in Alabama, in comparison to its national peers. Ten years of data (2000-2010) from federal and state agencies were gathered and analyzed to give an accurate account of the educational state of Alabama. This longitudinal research is the beginning of a 20-year study of educational trends in Alabama, in which the next data collection will take place concluding the 2020 academic year. A comprehensive examination of the economic and academic achievement position of Alabama’s youth to their national peers on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) offers a summary of findings noteworthy of presentation. Findings suggest when comparing student achievement levels in Alabama to the nation, Alabama did not compare favorably. However, policymakers, educators, and other advocates of public education are working diligently to provide the necessary resources for improving the lives of children throughout the state. Keywords: Academic achievement, Comparative education, Student performance
