IHG Academy launched at IIMT Volume 6, Issue 2 Newsletter July - December, 2013

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has formalised a partnership with the Institute for International Management and Technology (IIMT). This Programme gives hospitality students at IIMT an opportunity to be a part of an international work force. Douglas Martell, Vice President, Operations South West Asia, IHG said: “By partnering with IIMT we are able to contribute and support the next generation of hospitality leaders by being actively involved in the education process from the start.

IIMT will benefit from the partnership through a range of initiatives including IHG guest lecturers and mentors on campus; work experience placements for their students at IHG hotels; sponsorship of campus facilities as well as the opportunity to connect students with a range of employment options when they finish their studies.

The 7th IHG academy, IIMT based in Gurgaon, joins the six Academy programmes already operating across the country. The IHG Academy was developed to attract and foster talent in the hospitality industry by providing real-life skills and enhancing employment opportunities. It is a global initiative and has more than 180 programme running around the world.

IIMT in news on BBC4 Radio IIMT found a mention on BBC 4, where it was identified as ‘India’s finest hospitality education institution’. This radio show was entitled ‘Madhur Jaffrey, a life through food’. The show as the title suggests was focused on Madhur’s tryst with food, especially the impact on her childhood in the heart of Delhi and on her understanding of food and its cultural connect, specially in the fusion of vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine. The show also featured Professor Sandeep Munjal, Associate Dean at IIMT, who shared his perspective on the food trends and there linkage with the cultural changes that have impacted India in recent decades. Dionne Macker a final year student at IIMT mentioned that commercial food today was a representation of the international influences finding a comfort zone through adaptation to the Indian palate. IIMT Alumni appeared on ‘Home Shop TV 18’ Debutant Chef Akshit Dhingra from IIMT Gurgaon appeared on “Home Shop TV 18” for a promotion of a newly launched exclusive combination cooking equipment. He was seen demonstrating his culinary skills that he learnt at IIMT Gurgaon. Chef Akshit prepared delicacies from Chinese and Indian traditions using the multi cooking equipment. The show was performed at Home Shop TV 18 culinary studio and was telecast in December 2012. After the success of his first TV commercial, Chef Akshit feels more enthusiastic, motivated and is currently busy shooting for more TV commitments. At present Akshit is working as a chef at Marriott in Dubai. The programme at IIMT facilitated this journey. He made most of the opportunities offered to him during internships and otherwise to add value to his cooking skills.

IIMT Alumni appeared on Gillette Salutes Soldier in you for IIMT, when 3 of post graduate students, Devina Agarwal, Anurag Gupta and Manik Mittal, were chosen by ‘Times Now’ television channel to be a part of an enactment depicting eve teasing. This programme show cases camaraderie, courage, integrity, discipline and respect for women.

‘Times Now’ initiated a series in January 2013 that felicitates those men who stand up for their women. This campaign is supported by Gillette. Since its beginning this campaign has graduated to become a national movement and has gained support all over the country. It was an honour 2

This campaign resonanates with heightened national consciousness on atrocities against women. The programme shows visuals of men belonging to various walks of life and has a eclectic mix of professions coming together, to stand by women, as ‘Soldiers’. Who can stand up for women.

NEN Workshop & Panel Discussion on January 12, 2013

On January 12, 2013 IIMT and NEN conducted a Workshop followed by a Panel Discussion. The day long program started with registrations of the entrepreneurs wherein 25 entrepreneurs registered for the program from different sectors. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Vikas Rajput: Founder, Parallel Living Research Centre while the panelists for the discussion were Mr. Sunil K. Goyal: CEO

and Fund Manager, Yournest; Mr. Sahil Kapoor: Director & Co-Founder, Novo Informatics, Mr. Sahil Kapoor: Director & Co-Founder, Novo Informatics, Dr. Rajat Chauhan: Founder, Back 2 Fitness and La Ultra The High while Mr. Vikas Rajput: Founder, Parallel Living Research Centre was in the role of a moderator. The theme of the panel discussion was “Raising Money for your start – up”. The panel discussion started with a brief introduction of the panel members, following with the moderator’s questions to the panel members on the critical aspects of Raising Fund for the start ups, eventually the entrepreneurs present raised many questions to the panel members each highlighting different aspects of raising funds such as: how much money will get them started, Where will the money come from, How much money

should an entrepreneur raise from others, What are the ups and downs in fund raising, how does an entrepreneur pitch an idea to the investors, how to approach an investor ….for

their ventures. This day-long program equipped entrepreneurs with the basic skills that are needed – which went beyond generating awareness and begin developing key skills and knowledge. The workshop and the panel discussion provided solid grounding in the entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on experiential learning.

Innovation Challenge 2012 Grand Finale for IIMT – Oxford Brookes University Innovation Challenge 2012 The first round of Innovation Challenge was conducted in the year 2010. The competition is running for the third year now. This year, over 120 teams from schools across India participated enthusiastically. The essays submitted by teams were assessed by panel of academics and practitioners. Top 17 teams got the opportunity to present their ideas on December 14th, 2012 at Hotel Radisson Blu Plaza, New Delhi. The prime focus of the challenge has been to provide young talents of India with a platform to demonstrate their ability to think out of the box and come up with innovative ideas which will propel the country on its trajectory of growth by unleashing its creative energies.

Prof. Sandeep Munjal – Associate Dean & Head of School of Hospitality & Tourism Management IIMT IIMT thanks all the distinguished judges not only for judging the competition but also for giving their valuable inputs to the participants. To encourage more student participation each year and for appreciation of efforts, IIMT and Oxford Brookes University gives out wonderful prizes and trophies to the top 5 teams. Certificate of appreciation were also given to each member of the 17 finalist teams.

Innovation Challenge 2012 First Prize: The Pentecostal Assembly School, Bokaro presented the work on “Deploying technology to combat urgent global issues”. The School team consisted of Mayank Kumar and Kishore Kumar who were supported by their faculty mentor Dr. Karuna Prasad. The team has won an all inclusive 7 days trip to Oxford Brookes University at Oxford and London & a winner’s Trophy. The students emphasized on the issues related to Global Warming and Energy Security.

Second Prize: Sai International School, Odisha presented the work on “An enabling project on nurturing underprivileged children through CSR”. The School Team consisted of Vikram Aditiya Sahoo, Vishal Aditiya Sahoo and Simple Mohanty who were supported by their faculty mentor Ms. Rinku Sarangi. The team has won laptops for each member along with a Trophy. The students proposed a novel idea of nurturing underprivileged children through CSR.

Third Prize: Sainik School, Manipur presented the work on “Role of Society and Government for Conserving Environment”. The School Team consisted of Parikshit Thoudam who was supported by his faculty mentor Mr. Premananda Singh. The student has won a Cash Prize of INR 20,000 with a Trophy and Rs. 5000 cash award for the faculty mentor. The student discussed the idea of projects in each community dealing with Non- Biodegradable, Biodegradable waste, Water management and protection of the greenery.

Fourth Prize: Delhi Public School, Rourkela presented the work on “Role of society and government for conserving environment”. The School Team consisted of Sonali Patnaik who was supported by her faculty mentor Ms. Minati Mohapatra. The student has won Cash Prize of INR 15,000 & Trophy and Rs. 5000 cash award for the faculty mentor. The student emphasized on the concept of conserving the scavengers like vultures which have shown the fastest decline (99.7%) in any bird population.

Fifth Prize: Sai International School, Odisha presented the work on “Deploying Technology for Healthcare Mobicline”. The School Team consisted of Ankit Sahu, Ashish Mishra and Krishnakant Behera who were supported by their faculty mentor Ms. Debjani Mohapatra. The team has won Cash Prize of INR 10,000 & a Trophy and Rs. 5000 cash award for the faculty mentor. The students proposed an idea of improving the efficiency of the health care system through technology.

Hospitality CEO’s Panel Discussion on January 12, 2013

A panel discussion was organized on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Radisson blu, New Delhi to discuss the issues and challenges faced by the Hospitality Sector in a dynamic business environment. The career oppor-

Mr. Wright highlighted the importance of global experience for hospitality professionals to deal with multicultural customers and work environments. Finally, they suggested the students to follow their instinct and interest, supplement that with hard work and an ability to be able to accept failures. The discussion was followed by one on one discussion over high tea. The students were delighted and motivated to have a personal conversation with their Industry idols. Overall, a very refreshing and exciting opportunity for community to connect to the perspective of industry leaders.

Ideation Generation workshop conducted on January 14, 2013 Idea Generation Workshop was conducted at IIMT for the BBA final year students on January 14, 2013 for pre venture was very enriching in many ways. The invitee’s lecture and exercises were very informative and interesting to students fraternity. The students were shown some video’s and images of different situations/problems across the country which helped in making the workshop more very interactive. This further helped the students come up with very new and innovative ideas for different kinds of situations. This was an attempt by them to find out the various gaps in the market which can be in turn be business opportunities. Through the videos the students were forced to ponder and analyze each situation in their own perspectives. Some of the ideas which the students came up with were very logical and appropriate for the situations yet some were not that relevant and had some loop holes in them. They were made to critically analyze each other’s ideas and question them. Discussions were held on some of these ideas as well. The cross questioning and sharing of ideas done by each group was openly welcomed and enthusiastically discussed. The exercises were made in the form of small competitions which were judged to bring about the best in every student present. These kind of workshops are very helpful and enlightening and bring about clarity in our visions for the future, for becoming successful entrepreneurs. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Sanjay Kapoor; he started his career with HCL Limited from his Engineering College & worked in Telecom Division as Business Head for Karnataka & Goa based in Bangalore. He left the job shortly and became an entrepreneur by joining his family textile manufacturing, printing and processing business in Punjab. His love for technology made him start ventures in the field of IT Education and Training, computer troubleshooting and computer management, Telecom sales and services and industrial technology sales. He has owned and managed his Private Limited Company as a Managing Director for franchisees of 3 International companies in the domain of : a) Computer Education: with NIIT Ltd. IIMT Students as Volunteers at HIFI Conference at Leela Gurgaon on January 14-15, 2013 Students and faculty of SHTM (3rd year and Final Year), IIMT had quite an experience with crème de la crème

of the hospitality world. The opportunity came as an invite to participate in a conference organized by Hotel Investment Forum India, Gurgaon. The HIFI conference was organized by BHN. Eleven hospitality students under guidance of Mr. Debpriya De and Ms. Bandana Rai, faculty, SHTM got to assist the conference organizers at all the stages of execution. Right from preparing the venue during preconference stage and registering the owners, CEOs, directors, investors and representatives of hospitality leading organizations like Oberoi, Mariott, Leela, Carlson, IHG, Accor and Taj during the conference ; they showcased their efficient and confident self to the world. They also got an opportunity to demonstrate their positive and professional attitude which was rightly expected from them considering the international experience achieved in last couple of years. Their efforts, enthusiasm and professionalism were much appreciated and applauded by conference organizers and participants. Apart from learning from talks given by eminent industry leaders, they also witnessed high standard of service and technology evolution in hospitality industry.

Issues addressed during the conference were majorly aimed to discuss and suggest financing opportunities and options available for Indian market and suggestive directions to new entrepreneurs. Cocktail Mixing and Making Demonstration on January 18, 2013 Hospitality education has many exciting elements which add to its differential character of a very interactive and fun filled learning stream. To add to this very unique aspect, at IIMT the hospitality student community got an opportunity to interact and learn with Mr. Eldo Jacob, Beverage Manager of Radisson Blu, New Delhi. On 18th January, 2013 the students had a two hours long “Cocktail Mixing and Making Demonstration” by Mr. Jacob. He has worked with many bars like “Agni, the Park”, etc. He has also got preopening of some branded bars to his credit. Apart from being involved in bar operations and mixology, he has also been part of some cocktail shows presented on NDTV. The celebrity expert shared recipes and preparation of cocktails like Margarita, Martini. Cosmopolitan and Mojito along with their modern adapted versions. The session was very informative with regards to uses of ingredients, science of mixing, dos and don’ts of bar operations, etc. The students were also exposed to upcoming opportunities in field of beverages and mixology. Overall, an informative and interactive session much appreciated by our students.

IIMT organized a ‘Panel Talk’ as part of HR Club activity. The event was scheduled on February 14, 2013 at IIMT, Gurgaon. The following industry experts were invited as panelists: 1. Speakers shared their personal experiences with regard to multiple challenges under different phases in the area of HR. They shared their experience particularly during M&As wherein they had to confront a lot resistance by employees. They shared the ways and approaches, they adopted in order to restore confidence in management and helped the transition to be a smooth process. Moreover, the experts also talked about the

differences in the challenges of future when it comes to handling HR. Role of engaging employees was considered to be a significant task for future HR Managers. All in all, the talk has been a wonderful experience for one and all including faculty members. The event culminated as an eye-opener for students specializing in HR as they absorbed a lot from the speakers who actually managed and successfully handled the HR challenges.

Industry Experts and Guest Speakers at IIMT Visit of Chef Arun Mathur from “The Oberoi” group on Thursday the 7th February, 2013. The Hospitality students of IIMT Oxford Brookes University, Gurgaon, interacted with the Executive Chef Arun Mathur from “The Oberoi” group on Thursday the 7th February, 2013. The Chef discussed about “The Latest Culinary Trends in Hospitality Sector”. Starting from native trends, he talked about some International inclinations of food and related commodities, like the use of Iodine Content in the food, going back to the basics and use of single or minimum natural flavoring agents. Chef Mathur also discussed about some favorable food items for the coming year. The interaction became more interesting when the students started inquiring about their apprehensions for joining the industry and what to expect from their internship exposure. It was indeed a very effective knowledge sharing session and a pleasure to have an experienced chef from the industry address the students. Visit of Mr. Vijay Bansal, Director of Spire Logistics on 8th February, 2013 Guest interaction held for PGPM final semester marketing specialisation students on the 8th February, 2013. Mr. Vijay Bansal, Director of Spire Logistics talked about “Industrial Selling in a Service Context”, where he discussed about service selling in the logistics sector. He deliberated on the principles of industrial marketing which logistics service providers can apply while selling their services to their clients (manufacturers, exporters, importers, etc.). He emphasized the importance of knowledge in diverse areas like customs clearance, transportation costs and time, and international commercial geography for selling such a service. He also deliberated on the career opportunities in the logistics industry. Mr. Ruchin Khanduja- Marketing Head, McDonald’s India visited with his team members Mr. Vineet Antil- Brand Manager and Ms. Anushree Shivpuri-Marketing Manager. The students have been doing a live project with McDonald’s since the beginning of the semester and this interaction was an opportunity to gain first hand knowledge on project management, conducting customer research and product launch. The students presented their customer findings and the product launch strategies to the guests. Mr. Khanduja later addressed the students on the nuances on launching a new product in the market. He also gave a category snapshot of the fast food industry in India and the importance of keeping abreast with changing consumer trends. Visit of Mr. Asheem Tapadia- DGM (Digital Marketing & Strategy), IBM India 15th February, 2013 Guest interaction held for both the 1st year PG and 2nd Year PG (Marketing Specialisation) students on 15th February, 2013. Mr. Asheem Tapadia spoke on “Internet landscape of India and where does India stand vis-a-vis the world”. He also introduced the students to the terminologies and new analytics being used by marketers around the world to make their marketing strategies more exact and specific. Workshop on doing Business in India - Perspectives from Luxury Segment - 3rd Feb, 2013 An amalgamation of work and culture was seen at the Workshop on “Doing Business in India – Perspective from Luxury Segment”, organised by Dr. Vinnie Jauhari at IIMT on 3rd Feb, 2013 at Hotel Radisson Blu Plaza, New Delhi. 8 students, pursuing MBA in Luxury Management at IEMI – CMH, Paris had collaborated with 16 Post Graduate programme students from IIMT to pursue project on bringing French business to India. Divided in 4 teams, they worked on a luxury project implementation in India. Each team presented their work to a group of panelists, Team 4 won the first award for their project on “Implementation of the French ‘Bio’ brand Yves Rocher in India”.

The purpose of this paper was to provide a practitioners’ perspective on financial challenges prevalent in the Indian hospitality industry. The paper also makes an attempt to give useful insights into possible solutions to the issues raised.

The study assimilates data from senior finance professionals from a spectrum of hotels in India. The study involves the collection of primary data through structured interviews. The study highlights that some of the financial challenges faced by the Indian hospitality industry include high financing costs, multiplicity of taxes charged, licensing and legal issues, working capital issues and eroding margins. The study also gives some useful insights to the possible solutions to the challenges identified. This paper provides some very useful qualitative analysis of the contemporary challenges and their possible solutions prevalent in the Indian hospitality sector. The findings will be useful for hoteliers, policy makers and researchers to deliberate on the issues raised. However, it does not involve any quantitative analysis. Hospitality Events Management on February 23, 2013 and March 2, 2013 The students of SHTM 2010 organized theme based events at the IIMT campus, the first event was held on 23rd February 2013 which was an Italian theme based event christened as “Delicious da Italiano” and the next event was held on 2nd March 2013 which was a Mexican theme based event christened as “Mexicana La Fiesta”. The Events are a part of the IIMT-OBU Module – Hospitality Events Management. The students had done the entire event on their own, which included all the phases starting from planning of the event to the execution of the event. The students did an excellent work in terms of giving a fabulous décor which actually portrayed that the guests were in an Mexican / Italian environment. The food was excellent which was actually prepared in-house by the students and the flavors were exquisite and added on to the satisfaction of the guests. The cuisines were Mexican and Italian. The food matched well with the themes and the guests enjoyed a lot with Food, Drinks and Music along with Décor. The guests were mostly from the Corporate world and they were astonished to see such wonders created by students. Overall the students had a great time and these events gave them immense self confidence and exposure in the field of Events Management

The objective of the game was to create the tallest standing tower using limited resources. Like true managers, they used their skills and creativity to build the towers. However, the game saw many nervous moments- towers leaning precariously to those which saw the tower getting flattened at the very moment they were being judged. The tower which stood the test of time and was adjudged the best was that of the group: Akshay, Hima, Pooja and Mayank The teams also had to write a group poem with the stanzas: What we were, what we are and what we will be. It saw the creative juices flowing and we got many a witty lines. The poem which was adjudged the best was by the group: Manmeet, Anu, Zuber, Snehal and Adnan.

Club Activity Business Awareness Quiz Business Awareness Quiz competition was held for 2nd Semester PG students on 17th January, 2013, coordinated by Ms. Monica Bhardwaj and Ms. Raunica Ahluwalia. The competition constituted two rounds. The first, was a rapid fire elimination round in which the teams were tested on their awareness of international and Indian business affairs, current trends, histories, who’s who and interesting facts on current business powerhouses and brands. The second round was audio visual where the teams were tested of their 30

knowledge of logos and jingles. Visuals of celebrities during their child-

hood, news makers of 2012 and business honchos were the key themes of

the visual round. The audience kept the teams on tenterhooks, as they were active participants of all the answers that got passed by the teams. It was a well attended activity and the students participated enthusiastically, both as participating teams and as audience. The winners with highest points wereRavikant Sharma, Simranjeet Singh and Snehl Agarwal. The close runners up were- Rahul Sahu, Rohit Jain and Zuber Khan

Club Activities in January, 2013

Marketing Club held the Poster Making competition on Thursday, 31st January, 2013 with the theme Brand India, coordinated by Dr. Mullick, Mr. Nandi and Ms. Raunica, as part of Marketing Club Activity. The activity saw active participation with students bringing the principles of marketing and branding to their charts. The various facets which make India unique as a brand stood out in their

posters. Some of these facets were – The blue turban symbolizing the stable and progressive leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the cultural heritage of the various states, the famous personalities ranging from sports, bollywood and the business leaders who make India stand out internationally, the entrepreneurs like Ratan Tata and Kishore Biyani who portray the New India which stands strong globally. The posters were adjudged on the basis of the clarity of message, content and innovativeness displayed. The winners were: Suyansh Mishra & Ankit Garg and Runners Up: Aman Daluja, Md. Ahmer Moin

Club Activity “Smile day” HR Club’s second activity “Smile day” was held on 31st January, 2013 in IIMT campus. . The information about this activity was shared well in advance with all the HR specialization students. The students were supposed to think like HR managers and come up with any novel idea to make the employees happy without spending too much money. They were also to share this idea with any corporate person and take feedback about the feasibility of the idea. tivity was organized to enhance their thought process and innovativeness. On “Smile Day” they were supposed to share their ideas and feedback with other students and faculty members. There were six participants in all. It began with Shaila and Shagun’s sharing of the ideas like arranging for ice cream party or taking the employees for a movie. Tushar came up with a novel idea of giving points to employees who put in best of their efforts in the organization, and at the end the employees can redeem those points. Shikha and Sakshi making the best use of IT resources also showed a video of the interview they did with the employees of an organization. ing a movie instead. Heena presented the idea of giving gift vouchers to the employees. The activity was conducted by Dr. Kalpana Maheshwari, supported by Dr. Shweta Tiwari. After each presentation questions were put up in case of any doubt regarding the idea. It was a great learning experience for all. The activity ended on a sweet note with distribution of chocolates. Everyone who witnessed this activity enjoyed it a lot and appreciated the efforts put up in conducting it. 31


Sambandh.......Spreading Happiness

As part of Sambandh activity a wall hanging competition was held on 24th January, 2013 in all 18 teams participated from under graduate and post graduate streams. Each team was provided with card boards to prepare a wall hanging these entries were donated to under privilege primary schools. The topic of these wall hangings ranged from Alphabet discipline and hygiene. The students were also invited to draw creatures creatures living on the earth the arctic region in the sea and in the jungles. The competition was supervised by Dr. Tanuja Kaushik and Ms. Monica Bhardwaj.

State-of-the-art campus of IIMT on Sohna Road

IIMT’s new building is an all inclusive, state-of-art, fully air conditioned, Wi-Fi enabled, 16 acre campus within 15 minutes of Gurgaon in the National Capital Region (NCR) of India. The campus is also being built in an environmentally conscious manner by complying with the Indian LEED standard. It also has plethora of facilities for the student community as well as for the members of the IIMT family. The campus includes various Academic buildings to accommodate over 1000 students at any one time. These buildings include classrooms with contemporary AV systems, group discussion rooms for students and common room for recreational purpose. To make the student experience extremely rich, On-site hostel for boys and girls, has been constructed, that includes a recreational room, vending machines and laundry facility. There is an exclusive area dedicated for placement activities. The library on the campus is technologically advanced that hosts journals, text books and casual reading material. IIMT - Oxford Brookes Innovation Challenge 2013 IIMT - Oxford Brookes Innovation Challenge was instituted in 2010 by IIMT and Oxford Brookes University, UK to create a platform for innovative ideas of young undergraduates in India. It’s an initiative to address the problems faced by India in numerous areas. The effort is to bring out a change at the grass root levels by showcasing these ideas to organizations which could adopt them and usher in a change. Every year, the Innovation Challenge Essay Competition inspires young writers from all over India, to demonstrate their ability to think out of the box and come up with innovative ideas. Innovation Challenge 2013 is a competition for class XIth & XIIth students. Participants have to write

an essay based on the separate themes. The areas in which essays shall be accepted include technology, environment, education, sports, and socio cultural issues. Since its inception, the innovation challenge has seen various winning teams being felicitated with prestigious prizes.
