2008-2009 THE YEAR WE SAVED OUR POOLS AND CANADA BROKE WORLD RECORDS

ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET OCTOBER 2009

President’s message The 2008-2009 NYAC season was action packed! As you peruse your yearbook you will recall and remember so many moments of joy, achievement, friendship and community. We celebrate this pride annually at our Awards Banquet and recognize recorded achievement and merits throughout our last season. I cherish this memory of our time together as a community and of all the moments of NYAC history in this yearbook. It is a document carefully crafted for you by some very dedicated members and I would like to thank them for working so diligently so that we may enjoy it! I would also like to thank the Stipo family as they have generously donated their time and resources to print this for us. Thomas Jefferson once said that he was a great believer in luck, and that the harder he worked, the more luck he had. NYAC definitely has had its share of luck over the past year. Our coaches and swimmers were able to attend special team opportunities and clinics within our region and abroad. We continue to have the privilege of NYAC programs in all of our pools and expanding to York Mills and Forest Hill. We participated in Canadian swimming history with Annamay Pierse's World Record at Spring Nationals. We celebrated an athlete's participation in a Canadian Relay Record and we cheered on our tri-swim coach as she made herself known on the World Ironman stage in Hawaii. Some skeptics may claim that all of this can be thought of as luck, but I would like to tell you that I believe that our luck was earned with a tremendous amount of hard work. Our club, our coaches, our NYAC members, and our athletes are working harder each day so that together our teamwork makes a community that has just started to see what it can achieve! I would like to congratulate each swimmer on a successful season and thank all of our members for working so hard for our swimmers and our NYAC community. Keep up the hard work!

Natalie Lychy, President NYAC Board of Directors 2

WITNESSING A WORLD RECORD SARAH LYCHY (March 14, 2009) When my mother told me that I was going to go and help at the Spring National meet I thought it was going to be like any other meet. I was wrong. When I first got into the University of Toronto's pool I didn't even recognize it. The pool itself looked like it was transformed into a whole different place. I looked around at all the big, strong swimmers and I was amazed (They were also all twice my size or more). I met Brent Hayden, Ryan Cochrane, Annamay Pierse and many more. They also signed my official's pass and took pictures with us. Even though I was just wiping the blocks, I still felt like I had a very important job. When the time came for the 200m Breaststroke, Lee Anne Liberta walked the athletes onto the pool deck with Annamay Pierse in lane four, who was also racing against her sister. I knew it was going to be a great race just from the way Annamay was walking. As the crowd first saw Annamay step up to the blocks, they stood up and cheered like their life depended on it. Every single person was right there ready to witness something fantastic! The crowd hushed to listen to the referee. "Take your marks‌ BEEP!" The race was off and was in full speed and I was right there, on deck, seeing it live. I wonder what she was thinking during her race? After the first 100m it was announced that she was on the right pace time to swim a World record. Everyone was so loud it felt like my ears were going to explode! It seemed like she was being powered by all the cheering but after 150 metres her time looked like it was going to be tight. Then in an instant she hit the wall and everyone looked at the electronic board. The time was 2:17.50 and she broke the six-year-old world record!

Congratulations Annamay Pierse and thank you for inspiring swimmers like me to work hard and achieve our goals!

Annamay Pierse: 31.36, 1:05.96 (34.60), 1:41.51 (35.55), 2:17.50 (35.99) Leisel Jones: 31.73, 1:07.11 (35.38), 1:42.77 (35.66), 2:17.75 (34.98)

Save our Pools April 16, 2009 Rally at TDSB

By: Sierra Nicole LoMonaco Martin Luther King Jr. once made a powerful and meaningful statement, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” A group of bold and daring people didn’t stay silent when they heard about the news of the proposal to close the city’s pools. Instead they rose and stood up for what they believed in. When a bunch on swimmers, coaches and parents from NYAC heard the troubling news they decided to take action. Swimmers from various groups gathered together to form a protest and fight to save the pools. While walking down the street ready to join the young activists, I felt something I never felt before, a feeling that could not be described with words for how powerful and beautiful it was. A feeling of being a member of a team fighting for a cause we all believed in, a feeling that we could change people’s lives, a feeling that made me want to try and make a difference and believing that I could! People were shouting at the top of their lungs to cars driving by “Honk if you care, save our pools!” The point is that if you think you have no voice, you shall never achieve what you set out to, but if you let your soul speak for what it truly believes in, you can achieve whatever you want. Believing in yourself is a strong feeling, but if you also believe in each other, you can conquer anything. We congregated not as individuals but as one big strong collective group united in hope, love and determination. We believed that our strong positive message would be so convincing that the politicians couldn’t ignore us. We shouted our message as loud as we could until everyone stopped and listened to it! We believed we could make a difference, and ultimately we did. We need our pools!! They provide us a place that is used not only for swimming, but for friendship, teamwork, and discipline. Alone we can achieve our personal goals, but when we work together we can achieve even greater successes and accomplishments! I proudly swim with NYAC and together we have proven yet again that it is NOT YOUR AVERAGE CLUB.

Save our Pools April 16, 2009 Rally at TDSB

By: Jordan LoMonaco When I first heard about how the pools might be closing down and that there was a possibility that we wouldn’t be able to swim with NYAC anymore or at all, I was truly heartbroken. It wasn’t simply that they were just taking away a part-time hobby I enjoyed, but rather that they were taking away something that I was really passionate about. Swimming isn’t just a hobby that I do after school because my parents force me to do it; it is a place where I have made great friendships, am with people who care and support me, and I am in a group of people that are all striving towards a similar goal. My swim group is like a second family. Everyone cares about one other, everyone is there cheering you on and giving you support. They are the people that I can have the most fun with, and sometimes even go crazy with. We see our swimming friends almost as much, or even more than our actual school friends. We have created special bonds and friendships that will probably last longer than our actual swimming careers. Also, swimming is important because it is a fun way to stay in shape and is a valuable survival skill. Also, it is an individual sport so you don’t have the pressure of letting down your team like you might in team sports like soccer or baseball. The only real pressure is of not letting yourself down. When we heard about the rally that was being organized to protest the closure of some of the city pools we realized that there was a chance we could save the pools and try to have our collective voices heard. If there was an opportunity to save the pools I felt we all had an obligation to at least try and make a difference. Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting too many people to care about the availability of pools because it always seemed that not too many regular citizens cared about the actual sport, and so I thought that only about 20 people would actually show up for the rally. When I got down to city hall, I was shocked to see this enormous crowd of more than 100 people chanting and cheering, waving posters, and all together trying to help save the one thing that mattered to them…. Swimming. All of the young swimmers, coaches, parents, and citizens were enticing the passing vehicles to honk in support of their cause, were waving signs and swim gear from the sidewalks and basically trying to get some media attention that would send a message to the politicians and the public that swimming mattered and that swimmers were a united group that were passionate about their sport. Being there that day of the rally in the presence of so many dedicated and loyal swimmers inspired me immensely because swimming was more than just a sport to so many people…it was a way of life!

Letters to the TDSB, written in March 2009

Dear Ms. Heidi Wilson, I am writing to voice my concerns after hearing that the city was going to close the pools that I grew up with. If I did not have the opportunity to have all these nearby convenient pools, I wouldn’t have got to the level of swimming that I am at now. I have put countless hours into many of these pools. For young swimmers it would be best if the pools were convenient, as they are now, because it would take less stress off the parents driving back and forth to the pool. The city has already set up a perfect program, why let it crumble now? While the kids are staying fit, the parents don’t have to be stressed out with the inconvenient pool times and locations. These pools provide a great fitness facility for everybody. Many of these school pools also introduce high school swimmers to become competitive swimmers. The first year I was at North York Aquatic Club I was training at A.Y. Jackson three times a week. This pool is nearby my house and made it very easy for my parents. Later in my swimming career I was training at North View. I had trained in this pool for four years. I have also trained at Newtonbrook several times. I have had countless practices at these pools. The next generation should be able to have the opportunity as I did. Right now swimming has become increasingly popular in Canada. Canadian records and even World records are being broken. Don’t let this increased popularity for young athletes end. Last week at nationals there was twenty six new Canadian Records broken, and even one world record. This shows that Canada will become a serious competitor in swimming at the future Olympics. Swimming is becoming a much acknowledged sport in Canada, and it would be great if it were to continue. My goal in my swimming career is to make it to the Olympics. I would have never been able to do this without my early development at the Toronto District School Board Pools. Let’s keep Toronto school pools open,

Kyle Resnick

My name is Michelle Williams. I am 18 years old, in grade 12 at Vaughan Road Academy in Toronto. I am a member of the Canadian Junior National Swim Team who competed earlier this year at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Guam. I started swimming when I was 8 years old. The pool where I was practicing was at George Vanier Collegiate Institute. I became a member of the North York Aquatic Club (NYAC). My love for swimming grew as I learned competitive swimming skills and became able to apply them when we competed against other clubs. Making progress in my swimming gave me a sense of accomplishment that rubbed off on other areas of my life, such as my academics. I learned time management skills, focus and discipline, and my school grades also improved rapidly.

with the required dedication, and the tools and support (such as pools, clubs, family and community) dreams can actually become reality! To be successful in sport, or in any given field, one has to start at the beginning, taking small steps, which gradually become leaps. The beginning steps of my swimming career were taken right here in the TDSB swimming pools. Without these pools, I would definitely not be the swimmer - or the person! - I am today. Please keep the pools open! Canada's future swimming stars are probably already training in some TDSB pools, and if those pools are no longer available, what will happen to the future of Canadian swimming?

My training group later moved to the pool at A.Y. Jackson Collegiate Institute in North York, Toronto. My club has several competitive groups of different levels that train in TDSB swimming pools. Recently I competed at the 2009 Canadian Spring National Swimming Championships. At this competition I witnessed a new world record being set by a Canadian woman, Annamay Pierse! Why Toronto Pools Should Not be Closed My name is Caitlin Hodge, I am 14 years old and recently achieved my Senior National standard. I started swimming competitively when I was 11 years old and never looked back. For me the water has always been a source of pleasure and it would be a shame if some of our Toronto pools were closed. I know that Canada in the past few years has not been successful in competitive swimming, but we are making a comeback – the Ontario girls in my age group are the top in Canada and have been breaking many Provincial and National records – we compete against each other all the time – because we are good, it makes us better. Swimming isn’t just about competition, it is one of the sports with the least amount of injuries and it burns the most amount of calories. In swimming, it requires you to use all of your muscle groups, such as your back, shoulders, legs, arms, and your core. Many people with disabilities of any sort have resorted to pools, because they can move much more freely because of the natural buoyancy that water has. Many elderly people also go to pools so they can exercise without hurting themselves. Often their aquacize programs are held in school pools.

for our club NYAC (North York Aquatic Club) and was one of the few pools we had access to almost every day. I started in that pool and without it; I would not be where I am today. I recently had the honour of swimming at the Spring National Championship, and I shared the pool with some Olympians such as Ryan Cochrane, bronze medalist at the Beijing Games in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle, and Annamay Pierse, who broke the world record in the short course women’s 200meter breaststroke at this competition. They all started out in 5-6 lane 25-yard school pools. My dream is to follow in their swim strokes and A.Y. Jackson will have been a part of that success. If you choose to close pools like Lawrence Park, Newtonbrook and A.Y. Jackson, you will be preventing the next generation of swimmers to fulfill their dreams, but you will also prevent a disabled athlete or an elderly person from feeling good about themselves, to say nothing of all the swim lessons for little kids that will have to be cancelled. There will always be a special place in my heart for A. Y. Jackson because that’s where I started. Swimmers aren’t asking for the best 50 metre pools – they just want to swim.

When I started swimming, I started out at A.Y. Jackson, one of the pools that is at threat of closure today. At times it would be crowded because it was a 5 lane, 25 yard pool, for 20 kids, and sometimes there would be 2 groups in the pool, which would make it even more crowded but on a day to day basis there was enough place to swim and not smack people and so that we could do what we had to do. It was a very convenient pool

A NYAC RETROSPECTIVE BY WILLIAM LIM NYAC, North York Aquatic Club, Not Your Average Club, and on those special occasions Not Your Average Cook. These are all names I have come to associate with this amazing Ontario swimming club, not to mention it’s got almost as many nicknames as I do. That in itself is worth special mention. I have spent my entire high school career swimming for NYAC, and all I can say is that it made the journey the best possible. Starting with me in the junior group and moving up steadily through the club, with my NYAC chapter culminating with a spot in the National Group under Murray; this is a journey that will be remembered forever. My first year in NYAC, I was placed in the junior group with John Calnan. Although he was new to coaching, he was certainly not new to NYAC. I’ll be completely honest, and say I can’t totally remember that first year in clarity. What I can say is that I met friends there that would affect me for the rest of my NYAC career and probably beyond. My first return to NYAC was in the Provincial 2 group under John Calnan again. He put us through our paces as best he could. All of us put our best foot forward; we wanted to show the guys in Provincial 1 we were just as fast as them. John put in a phenomenal effort in this year, going far and above what anyone expected of him. He brought in stretch cords, medicine balls, and some other equipment. I qualified for 15-year-old Provincials at OFSAA earning a silver medal there, but aged up soon after. I could not keep up with the drop in time fast enough to attend Long course provincials. My first provincials would have to wait another year. For my third year in NYAC, I was placed in the Provincial 1 group under John once again. Most of my friends from Provincial 2 group and even so far back as junior were in this group with me. This year I had someone to race against in the sprint sets. For those that trained with me, or know him, you guys know what I am talking about. It was great having someone to race against on a daily basis and the outcome proved very rewarding. We both were able to attend the Jr. Provincials in London, this being my first provincials ever. This was also my first away trip with NYAC so the entire competition was a learning experience and a real eye-opener. After the meet, I was promptly moved up to the National Development, which was also under John. You could really say that, my career in NYAC was just a huge crescendo. This fourth and final year with NYAC was the busiest and most interesting year to top off my NYAC career. To begin, for the fourth straight year I was selected to be coached by John once again in the National Development group. He once again came at this year full throttle, with a brand new dryland regime, and new training equipment. Shoes, clothes and parachutes were but a few new ideas John brought to the pool. Furthermore I had the privilege of specialized sprint sets 2-3 times per week. Although some of the time, it was “pulling teeth” and I “botched” sets here and there, the sets worked their magic, the results do not lie. For at the 2008 Youth 73

Cup I made two Western National Cuts (Slicing nearly 3 seconds off my 100 Free Best). Following Youth Cup, select members of NYAC traveled to Baltimore for a short course yards meet. This meet was fantastic as it allowed for tons of bonding with NYACers outside of my group and with friends that had never gone on an away trip at the same time as me. In February it was decided that I would train with the National group to prepare for Western Nationals in Edmonton. Little did I know, it was a one-way ticket. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous at first training with the top group. I had been used to training with the same group of people and same coach for almost 4 seasons. The fact was, I was already quite familiar with the group before I even joined. Billy and Roland made room for me in their lane, if they weren’t happy about it, they sure were good at hiding it. Kyungsoo (The Rocket) made for a great mentor in the realm of sprinting. He and Murray’s input allowed me to make great strides in my freestyle sprinting technique. Although I only trained with the group for 5 months, it felt so much longer than that. I’d like to take this opportunity for such a warm welcome, thanks even if I did not mention your name here. NYAC it’s been amazing, these 4 years have allowed me to grow not just as a swimmer but as a person. Its been an amazing ride guys, thanks for all the fun, experience, mentoring, advice, laughs and good times we had together; they will not soon be forgotten. To any budding NYACer, who is looking up in jawdropping awe at those swimmers in the National group, stays focused and work hard. You will get there, do not worry, do not even doubt that you will make it there. If you do, you are just making it that much harder for yourself. To all my training partners, and all those still racing under NYAC; I wish you good luck, keep working hard, have fun, and SWIM FAST.

Thank you NYAC – it’s been great.
