Rachael Click In 2013, Rachael Click begins her first season at the helm of the Saint Benedict softball program. She comes to CSB from Jacksonville University where she served as an assistant coach for the Dolphins the last two seasons. Prior to coaching at JU, she was an assistant at Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the 2010 season. A 2009 Gustavus Adolphus College graduate with a degree in elementary education, Click earned Cum Laude Honors in addition to her decorated softball career.
A four-year star for the Gusties, Click was named MIAC Rookie of the Year in 2006 and received all-conference honors in all four seasons. A team captain during her senior season, she was named MIAC Player of the Year, while earning All-America honors and a spot on the NCAA Championship AllTournament team. In the 2009 season, Click led the Gusties to a MIAC title and NCAA Regional Championship, finishing just a game shy of the national championship.
New Coach, New Season With a new head coach, the Blazer softball team is looking to take the next step in 2013. For the first time in a long time, there will be a new look on the bench to Blazer softball this season. Rachael Click takes over as head coach while long-time leader Denny Johnson stays right at home, beginning a new role as assistant coach. Click joins the Blazers fresh off two seasons as an assistant at Jacksonville University, but she is no stranger to the MIAC, having spent four years playing for rival Gustavus, leading the Gusties to a MIAC championship in her senior season. That year, Click was named MIAC Player of the Year, leading the Gusties to a NCAA Regional title and berth in the NCAA Championships. She inherits a team that just narrowly missed out on the conference tournament last season, finishing in fifth place and just one game shy of a spot in the top-four with a 10-12 league record and a 18-16 mark overall.
“The team kind of has a bad taste in their mouth from last year,” Click said. “They had such a great start to the season, and didn’t end She holds Gustavus single-season records in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs, RBIs, and total bases. Click also holds career records up getting the results that they wanted. I think that that’s the goal in in slugging percentage, on base percentage, home runs, RBIs, and total bases. everyone’s mind, to compete for a spot in the playoffs.” She was named Female Athlete of the Year in 2009 at Gustavus and is a NCAA To accomplish the goal of being in the playoff mix at the end of the Post Graduate Scholar. A well rounded student-athlete, she is also a two-time season, Click hopes to instill the mindset of appreciating progress, and ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
all the achievement along the way.
“If you can celebrate improvement and the process, then the wins are going to come,” she said. “If we have a game where we didn’t have any walks – and maybe we lost the game – but we’ve been having issues Denny Johnson returns for his 27th season with walks all season, then we want to enjoy that accomplishment.”
with the Saint Benedict softball team, but his first as assistant coach.
In 26 seasons as the Blazers’ head coach, Johnson won 522 career games, earning his 500th victory on Apr. 28, 2011 against Carleton. In MIAC play he won 352 games, while posting a .638 conference winning percentage. During his tenure he led the Blazers to a pair of MIAC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The 1993 season was a memorable one, as he led the Blazers to a record 31 wins, going 19-1 in the MIAC to earn the programs first conference title.
As the Blazers take their steps along the way, they will be led by All-Conference returnees Lexi Alm and Rachel Nelson, as the pair shoulders the load for a youthful team that features 13 underclassmen, without a senior. Equally anchoring the line-up and the staff, respectively, Alm and Nelson were each among the MIAC leaders last season. Alm was in the top-five of the MIAC in four different categories, which included a league best .770 slugging percentage on the strength of eight home runs and a .434 batting average. Likewise, Nelson was third in the league in ERA (1.78), and fourth in strikeouts (88).
The Blazers may have gotten the individual success, and posted a winning record, but not getting the payoff with the postseason was just extra motivation heading into this season. A season that will feature a new head coach and a renewed attitude to finish off where they came He also serves as the assistant coach for the Blazer basketball team, a position up short last year. Johnson posted a winning record in 21 seasons, and at the end of last season, he closed his head coaching career 20th all-time in NCAA Division III softball coaching victories. he has held for the past 27 years. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Johnson’s also teaches in the exercise science department and oversees equipment needs for all CSB athletic programs.
“In the offseason, they were really focused, working hard with weights and conditioning. And they’re taking this season seriously, that we have A St. Cloud native, he graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1968 something to prove and teams shouldn’t overlook us, and we want to and St. Cloud State University in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. give people a run for their money.” Johnson resides in St. Cloud with his wife Robin, and they have two daughters, each CSB graduates.
