Project Brief biomimicry (n) the process of using elements from nature to inspire form or function of a designed object From the method of biomimicry, create a product that responds to a human problem.

5

Problem Description Salt and pepper shakers are primarily designed for public use in a restaurant or dining hall. Practicality is the main concern, and aesthetic is overlooked. To integrate these seasoning dispensers into the home, a sense of elegance and charm needs to be implemented.

Screenwall

11

Project Brief A building is a giant construct of joints and connections. This process-oriented project explores an unconventional approach to these structural features. The goal is to create a self-supporting wall out of several copies of a single module. The parametric screenwall should be dynamic and have neither front nor back, and should interact with passing light and air.

12

These are various iterations of a module, each starting with a 3"x4" rectangle and three lines. Two of the resulting line segments are cut, while the others are folded.

13

The screenwall was put together through trial and feedback. Varying orientations and configurations of modules were explored.

Project Brief "Architecture is the thoughtful making of space" - Louis Kahn This project is focused on designing a pavilion that creates a space for conversation as well as a space for contemplation. The goal is to use stereotomic masses and planar surfaces to form space that flows, yet also define space for either a group of three or for just one person.

18

The stereometric masses are constructed by making two cuts through a 3" H x 4" W x 8" L volume.

The pavilion would be installed in a public park to provide an interactive space that in turn facilitates the interactions of people.

Discarded to Precious

24

25

Project Brief This one-week project pushes the use of only discarded materials to make something personally precious.

26

While fake plants may be decorative in nature, they rarely embody value. In a move-out, they are very often one of the first things thrown out. A discarded artificial Christmas tree and fern are used for this piece.

27

While not tangible, confidence is a precious quality that many struggle to build within themselves. This neckpiece is made to evoke a sense of confidence from the one who wears it.

Projectile Launcher

30

31

Project Brief There is a target 25 feet away and 18 inches off the ground. Design a projectile launcher that is able to hit the target with a ping pong ball. Consider ease of use in addition to the precision and accuracy of the launcher.

32

33

The angle of the launcher's main body is adjustable for greater control of trajectory. The ping pong ball has a loading cradle to keep it in place when not in use. The ball is projected with a push of the clothespin, which releases a stretched rubber band.
