Magpie Update: March 16th 2012 Port Pirie Masters Games The 2012 Port Pirie Pura Light Start State Masters Games will be held from 13 - 22 April. With over 34 sports, and an estimated 1500 competitors, this major community event is one of the largest multi-sporting events in South Australia. The 2012 Games will be the seventh consecutive Masters Games in Port Pirie, and is shaping up to be another exciting event. The Games have built up over the years into a well renowned event around the Masters Games circuit in Australia, where 75% of competitors are from outside the Southern Flinders Ranges region. Hockey is a popular sport within the Games program, offering both male and female age groups of 35-40, and 41 plus age groups. The hockey component of the Games will be held over two days; 14th and 15th April. The sport of Hockey is expected to be one of huge growth in the 2012 Games, after very successful events at the Naracoorte Masters Games and Australian Masters Games. The Port Pirie Hockey Association has just undergone a $300,000 redevelopment of its facilities in 2011, and now enjoys a brand new hybrid turf pitch, and is ready for use in the Masters Games! The Hockey will cater for all involved; those wanting to try hockey for the first time, veteran hockey players, and those who wish to be involved for the social side of the sport. Off the field, Port Pirie is part of the well renowned Southern Flinders Ranges, and is full of both exciting and relaxing attractions. From bushwalking and Four Wheel Driving, to wine tastings at popular wineries and fantastic fishing opportunities in the Spencer Gulf, there really is something for everyone in Port Pirie. We encourage all potential hockey competitors to not only visit Port Pirie for its Masters Games, but stay awhile and enjoy the fruits of the region. For more information, or to register, visit the Games website at , or call the Tourism and Arts Centre on 1800 000 424, or the hockey coordinator Kylie Nelson on 8633 2194.

New Chairman for Hockey Metro Executive The Board of Hockey SA is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Craig Sinclair to the role of Chairman of the Hockey Metro Executive Committee (HME) for the next two years Craig brings a wealth of experience to the role and will prove an able replacement for Mr John Arthur who advised the Board in February of his intention to retire from this position effective March 2012. The Board is very appreciative of John's personal efforts during his term as Hockey Metro Chairman and owe him a special vote of thanks for his work with the Board in facilitating the two major initiatives that were undertaken as joint Hockey SA Board and HME projects over the past 12 months: the Future Directions for our Competition and the Rules Review undertaken by DMAW Lawyers. Whilst John’s passion for the sport will be missed I am sure that you will all welcome Craig into the role and give him the same support that you afforded to John. Magpie Update: March 16th 2012 Message from the HSA Chairman After serving for the past two years on the Board of Hockey SA I have decided to not seek re-election at the upcoming Annual general meeting. This decision was made after considerable soul-searching and prioritising my life into the future. We all should be very proud of the results hockey in South Australia has achieved on the pitch over the past year with the OAMPS Southern Suns winning the Australian Hockey League for the first time in 16 years and Bianca Greenshields, Holly Evans, Elise Stacy and Georgie Parker all representing Australia at some stage during 2011. Hockey SA’s regional associations continued to grow and prosper. Port Pirie officially opened their new water base playing surface and Port Lincoln successfully hosted the 2011 National Country Championships. Adelaide University have also re-opened their pitch this year with a new updated playing surface for all to enjoy in season 2012 and beyond. As Chairman I gave an undertaking to conduct a Presidents Meeting in May 2011 and from that meeting a request was made by the Presidents to form a committee and develop for consideration a futures direction paper to be presented at the February 2012 Presidents meeting. I am pleased to advise that the Hockey SA board was able to deliver on both initiatives and firmly believe the implementation of the proposed competition and development structure will be instrumental in both growing our sport and improving the depth of quality in our elite players. The following is an overview of the general principles the future directions committee investigated and developed. The Future Directions committee investigated: • • • • • • • •

How the structure of the competition could be improved to promote growth in participation numbers How the structure of the competition could be improved to increase the standard of the elite competition. The overarching principles that form the proposed restructure of the competition and the associated grading of teams and team entry criteria are: That there should be junior development growth; That there should be no byes in any grade accept the lowest grade; That the competition is open at each grade (i.e. any club or country association can potentially have a team in any grade) That teams play competitively at the appropriate grade; That the promotion and relegation of teams facilitate the strongest possible

A copy of the document is available on Hockey SA's website and I encourage you to review and make comment to your club so that information can be provided back to Hockey SA. Thank you for your support and I wish you and your clubs all the best into the future. Garry O'Shea- Chairman Hockey SA

Summer sevens Two seven a side teams were fielded by padhc in the metro masters competition. The teams were a good mix of existing metro players - as well as some new players and players returning from injury. The special rules for the sevens format include no hitting or lifting the ball, no goalies and playing half field. At A cost of $7.00 per game the competition attracted over 60 players each game night. A number of players returning from injury will now transition into the winter competition. Thanks go to the players, umpires, managers, cooks and other volunteers who made the competition enjoyable for all participants.

WANTED – CANTEEN MANAGER/s We are looking for one or two people who would be interested in joining our canteen manager group. This will lighten the load for the current small group of people who regularly cook your food during game days at Port. In general terms the canteen manager’s role is to cook the hot plate food & supervise the rostered team helpers who staff the canteen during match days. Ideally it would be great if the managers weren’t involved in playing or had children playing in teams within the competition as this makes it easier to do the roster or find a replacement at short notice should one be required. If you are interested or know of someone who may be interested please contact Sue Kitto by either email or mobile 0417 884 007 and I will be happy to explain the role in more detail and answer any questions you may have.

Farewell Allen and Natsai Farewell drinks and a BBQ will be held on from 7pm on Friday the 23rd of March at the club for Allen and Natsai who are off to NSW in April.
