As Christianity spread, St. Nicholas’ image began to change. Russia’s Dedt Moroz, or Father Ice and the Norse god Odin and even the old Roman deity Saturn had white beards and the power to fly through the air or magically appear. As the centuries ground along, these attributes were melded with the myths surrounding the good St. Nicholas. Communication back then wasn’t what it is today so there were many different versions of St. Nicholas. In many of these a punisher known variously as Knecht Rupert, Ru Claus, Pelznickel, Aschenklaus and Black Pete accompanied the good saint. This sinister sidekick was on the lookout for children that misbehaved. Legend has it that Black Pete would abduct bad children or (more often) leave a birch switch behind as a hint of their fate if the bad behavior continued. Most often, St. Nicholas intervened, saving even naughty children from Black Pete, teaching them that they could earn another chance if they would mend their ways. Eventually the evil accomplice was dropped leaving it up to St. Nicholas to be the sole judge of whether a child was “naughty or nice” and the birch switch was replaced with a lump of coal. So, just prior to his journey across the Atlantic to the New World, St. Nicholas had become a red robed, white bearded figure who flew on a white horse to deliver gifts to good children overnight during the Christmas Holy Days. In the early days of New York, the Dutch name “Sante Klaus” was adopted by more recent English colonists as “Santa Claus”. The name stuck and immigrants of many backgrounds adopted him and carried his name west as America was explored. Washington Irving is credited with widening Santa Claus’ popularity and putting him in a cart that flew through the air. The writings of Irving were certainly known by Henry Livingston who penned the famous poem “An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas” that he recited to his children one Christmas. Later, in 1822, the poem was published for the first time in the Troy Sentinel. A professor of divinity, Dr Clement Moore, claimed authorship and a controversy rages to this day over who actually wrote the poem. Regardless, the poem became quite popular and did wonders for the reputation of Santa Claus. It gave us a sleigh pulled by reindeer that all had names and reinforced the idea that Santa entered through the chimney. The bishop’s robes were gone; replaced by a furry suit. Santa was now jolly and corpulent but small. This thoroughly American rendition of St Nicholas was hugely popular and the poem was (and is still) repeated every Christmas Eve in nearly every American home. During the dark days of the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly published numerous stories about Santa Claus illustrated by a German immigrant, Thomas Nast. The characteristics Santa Claus were no longer left up to the imagination. Nast’s illustrations unified and solidified popular ideas of what Santa looked like and how he acted. He was a “Jolly Old Elf”. Today we think of Santa Claus as a much larger personage. This came about through an advertising campaign conducted during the early days of popular color publications. The Coca-Cola Company sponsored an ad campaign during Prohibition that featured Santa as a larger version of the elf. Billboards and magazine images of this new Santa blazed their way into the popular consciousness and have remained ever since. Santa’s favorite reindeer Rudolph was introduced through another popular ad campaign staged by Montgomery Ward in 1939. Through all the changes St. Nick has undergone, he remains in our hearts as our companion at Christmas. Whether Saint or Santa, we can count on him to remind us that Christmas is a time for giving and for children. Every effort must be made to make a magical visit possible for every child.... especially the less fortunate. Above all else, this is the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Please, give him a hand.

Did you know? Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a dried-out tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fire. As if fire wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead -- something that is now known to be a health hazard to adults and children alike. Although we’ve come a long way since candles and lead, even now trees that are overly dry and decorated with lights that have frayed wires can just as easily lead to fires. Plus, plastic tinsel can be a choking hazard for children and pets. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. It has long been thought that poinsettias are poisonous to people and animals. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison.

donating older gifts

The average person has many belongings he or she may not need. According to the Self Storage Association, there are 2.3 billion square feet designated to self-storage space in the United States, and one out of every 10 households in the country rents a unit. Many financial analysts say that the self-storage industry is essentially recession-proof. That’s because once a person moves items into storage, they’re not likely to move it out anytime soon. Many of the items relegated to self-storage units across the nation could be holiday gifts from years past. But rather than store items that will never see the light of day, why not help a good cause and donate such items to charity? Make it a tradition Families can make donating items prior to the holidays a tradition so that it is something that everyone anticipates and looks forward to. Much as you would decorate the home or shop for fancy holiday clothing, you can set aside a day for sorting through

Holiday giving for special needs children Everyone wants to get the perfect gifts for people on their holiday shopping lists. Shopping for a child with special needs can make gift-giving a bit more difficult. After all, buyers want to ensure the gift is practical as well as thoughtful. However, there are many great gift ideas for special needs children.

good gifts, particularly if parents’ own budgets are stretched. If you’d like to make the gift a surprise for everyone involved, go directly to a therapist or teacher and ask for suggestions. There may be classroom aides that can be bought to continue the learning experience at home. * Assess developmental level. When it comes to special needs children, age does not always dictate the proper developmental level. A pre-teen with special needs may not be on the same level academically and socially as his or her peers, while some special needs children may be more developed in a particular area than other special needs kids their age. Assess a child’s developmental level to help you select toys that he or she can play with. For example, a nonverbal child with autism who likes marine life may benefit from a colorful picture book where he or she can point to the animals.

Buying gifts for kids with a disability or other special needs make take a little more time, but shoppers who consider a child’s developmental readiness as well as personal interests can still find the perfect gift. * Consult with parents and caregivers. Parents often know best when it comes to their own children and will make the most reliable source as to which gifts to buy for special needs children. Parents may have a list of items a therapist or teacher has suggested, and these learning tools could make

* Think about interests. Most children gravitate to certain types of toys and have specific interests when it comes to play. A music lover may enjoy a learner’s guitar or keyboard. Those who like to build would probably like a Lego(R) or Mega Bloks(R) set that can be transformed into cars, trucks or even space stations. Most children benefit from art sets where they can explore their creativity and also master greater dexterity and imaginative thinking. * Consider making a financial donation. Some children with special needs require the use of specialized equipment, such as braces or wheelchairs. Such equipment can be expensive, and the child’s family might benefit from a financial gift. A monetary gift to be put toward medical supplies, travel, gear, or even a charitable donation to an association would make fine gifts. Special needs children are just like others in that they look forward to the bounty of holiday gifts. Choosing presents that pertain to their interests, needs and developmental readiness can ensure that this holiday season is a happy one.

Easy ways to be ‘green’ for the holidays While the holiday season is a time of joy, giving and religious reflection, it also can be a time of excess. Holiday parties, meals brimming with more food than the average person can consume, wrapping paper tossed aside after minimal usage, and shoppers venturing for miles in cars in search of presents can all prove wasteful. For the environmentally conscious, the holiday season is a great opportunity to put your ideals to use. Although it may seem like a challenging task, going green for the holidays is easier than you might think. * Get a live Christmas tree. Christmas trees are planted

expressly for the purpose of being cut down and turned into holiday decor. Responsible tree farms will plant many more trees than is needed for the purpose of Christmas trees. Be a good steward for the environment and recycle your tree once the holidays are over. Some recycling centers will pick them up for free or a small fee. * Consider giving food as a gift. Food is consumable, doesn’t take up space, and locally grown food does not require shipping or wasteful packaging. It’s an ideal gift for those who already have everything. * Cut back on holiday decor.

Most people love showcasing their Christmas spirit with decorations. However, many decorative products are produced overseas and shipped over to North America on large vessels that require a lot of fuel. Think about reducing your decorations or replacing plastic and metal decorations for all-natural options. Branches of holly or twigs tied with ribbon to form a natural wreath are just as decorative as store-bought plastic decorations. * Don’t leave lights on for extended periods of time. Homes and businesses bedecked in holiday lights are staples of the season. However, extra lights, inflatable lawn Santas

Mon, Tues, Wed & Fri 8-6; Thurs 8-8; Sat 8-4 and other accessories consume substantial amounts of energy. Instead of leaving lights and other decorative items running for hours each night, turn them off after a little while to save energy. * Donate money in lieu of gifts. Choose environmentally responsible charities and donate funds to their efforts in the name of people who do not need another package of pajamas. * Use decomposable shipping peanuts. Shipping peanuts are environmentally friendly pack-

ing products that are made from cornstarch. When they come in contact with water, they dissolve -- making for easy cleanup and less trash.

* Donate unused gifts. Nearly everyone gets an unwanted gift come the holiday season. Instead of putting items in the trash or taking them back to the store, donate gifts you’ll never use to a charity or a thrift shop.

* Wrap gifts with wrapping paper alternatives. Wrapping paper is a luxury item and one that tends to be wasteful. There are many items around the house

rative gift wrap. Sew scraps of fabric together for a patchwork bag or use glossy photos from mache a box. When you think creatively, you’re bound to come up with some very usable and eco-friendly ideas. Although many people tend to getting into the holiday spirit does not have to be unfriendly to the environment.

Be a Santa to a Senior CAPITAL DISTRICT – With so many older adults living alone and in poverty, some Schenectady, Schoharie and Montgomery County seniors will undoubtedly be struggling to make ends meet this holiday season. That’s why the area Home Instead Senior Care® office has partnered with retailers and community organizations to make sure isolated seniors receive gifts and companionship through the Be a Santa to a Senior® program. With the support of Dayhaven Adult Day Services, Holyrood House Apartments, Shaffer Heights Apartments, Niskayuna High School’s “Raise & Give” organization, area retailers, volunteers and members of the community, the local Home Instead Senior Care office will collect and distribute gifts to seniors who might otherwise spend the holiday alone. The Be a Santa to a Senior program will run through December 20. A holiday tree, which will go up in the Rotterdam Square Mall food court (93 West Campbell Road, Schenectady), will feature ornaments with the first names of the seniors and their respective gift requests. Holiday shoppers are asked to pick up an ornament off the special Be a Santa to a Senior holiday tree, buy items on the list and return them unwrapped to the mall, along with the ornament attached. The Home Instead Senior Care office will then enlist the volunteer help of its staff, senior-care business associates, non-profit workers and others to collect, wrap and distribute the gifts. For more information about the program, visit www.beasantatoasenior. com or call (518) 346-6769. (P)
