SUMMER LAWN CARE

June 14, 2018

All spring long we’ve had to mow our lawns at least once a week to keep up with its rapid growth. Like most of you, I’ve been mowing it low to try and gain some time between mowing. When the heat and dryness of summer arrive, we need to adjust our attitude and our mowing height. To help your lawn survive dry summer weather let it get taller… as tall as your lawn mower will adjust…4” to 5”. If you continue with the low mow, the sun Stop the low mow during hot summer will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill weather. the roots of your grass. A lawn left long shades the soil. You may like the look of a shorter lawn, but if the soil temperature goes above 85° to 90° for three consecutive days, the root system dies. Once that happens, you’re looking at a lot of grass seed and a lot of watering in late summer and early fall to repair the lawn There comes a time when you just must water. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to remain healthy, it needs an inch of water Raise your mower blade to its highest setting. a week. What you need to know, though, is that the lawn needs that inch of water all at once to get any real benefit from it. Water your lawn heavily then not at all for a week. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. If you have watering restrictions that only allow you to water every other day for two An inch of water once a week. hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with underground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”. Water at this depth in the soil will not evaporate quickly, and it’s where the roots of the grass are located so it can be absorbed. Quickly spraying the lawn might perk it up briefly but most of that moisture is lost to evaporation and can never penetrate deep into the soil to get to the roots. At this point folks will ask, “How long do I need to leave the sprinkler on to put on an inch of water?” Since we all have different lawn sprinklers and water pressure, I can’t answer that question. This is something we must all determine on our own. You simply need to take a small, empty tuna fish can and place it in the area you’re watering. Don’t shut it off until it is full. Make a mental note of how long it took, and you’ll always know how long your setup takes to put out an inch of water. That’s it. Water deeply then take a break for a week. Thanks for the read.

Destroyer Escort Day At USS SLATER CAPITAL DISTRICT The third Saturday in June is recognized and celebrated nationwide as Destroyer Escort Day. On Saturday, June 16th, we will pay homage to the Destroyer Escort sailors killed in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War years and to the fifteen Destroyer Escorts lost in action. There will be a ceremony to honor and remember Destroyer Escorts and their sailors at 9:00 a.m. at USS SLATER. Over 150,000 men served in destroyer escorts during World War II and through the Vietnam War. Their numbers are dwindling each year, but several of these veterans will be present to remember their lost shipmates. USS SLATER, a National Historic Landmark, is the last DE afloat in America. She is a fitting tribute to so many sailors who gave so much for their country in its time of need. The first Destroyer Escort Day was held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on June 16, 1990. Destroyer Escort Day is celebrated by the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum and all of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association Chapters nationwide. Each Chapter prepares and conducts its own program to honor the ships and crews. The Albany ceremony is sponsored by USS SLATER Volunteers. USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Regular public hours for the ship are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is charged. Call 518-431-1943 for more information or visit the website at www.ussslater.org.

Southern Saratoga Art Society

THE WEEKLY PENNYSAVER -WKLY

June 14, 2018

SARATOGA COUNTY - Burnt Hills Library will host two artists from the Southern Saratoga Art Society in the community room for the month of June. Rebecca Jenkins of Mechanicville is a graduate of Russell Sage with a degree in Photography. Her artwork reflects her views as she travels and explores both locally and abroad. She loves photographing sometimes uncooperative subjects under water. Patricia Wade of Ballston Lake loves to sketch and paint in various mediums, watercolor, oils, coffee and most recently alcohol ink paint. She has studied with several local artists. Both artists exhibit at various venues locally. The exhibit will run from June 1 through June 29. Valerie Woodward of Clifton Park, a retired Geologist and self-taught watercolorist will be exhibiting for the month of June at the Clifton Park Senior Community Center. Not being one to follow the set “rules” of watercolor painting, she approaches each painting with a separate perspective. Valerie does some “quirky cartoon collage” paintings in pen and watercolor to balance her more serious works. She says “Life is time made up of layers of seeing and feeling and a painting represents only a sliver. View some of her work on-line at: southernsaratogaartist.com SSAS member, Ritvik Sharma of Altamont will be the guest artist at the Monday, June 25 meeting, 6:30 p.m., held at the Clifton Park Senior Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court. Meetings are held in April, October and the December meeting also serves as a Christmas luncheon. During the year funds are raised through bake sales and 50/50 raffles for purchasing items for the residents. For more information contact Tracie Denney at 518-384-3640, option 1 or Jan at 518-384-0095.

Why Switch To Diesel Engines? Long-haul truckers and other commercial drivers are not the only ones filling up at the diesel pump these days. In fact, many private citizens are swapping their gasoline-powered cars for vehicles with diesel engines. Although diesel engines were once thought to be dirty and loud, such cars and trucks can actually be efficient consumers of fuel. For anyone looking to save

money and help the environment, diesel cars and trucks can be well worth the look. • No spark plugs: Diesel engines do not have spark plugs or distributors as gaspowered engines do. That means they will not require ignition tune-ups. • Longevity: Diesel engines are prized for their ruggedness and ability to withstand

higher compression. Industry experts say many diesel vehicles can have longer life spans than gas-powered vehicles. Plus they can be driven farther before they will require major repairs. • Efficiency: According to Carophile, diesel engines can convert more fuel into power — between 45 and 50 percent — than traditional gasoline engines, which boast conversion rates of

roughly 30 percent. Many diesel vehicles get great gas mileage and can deliver similar fuel economy to some gasoline-electric hybrids. • Cool running: Because of their efficiency, diesels run cool, offers automotive company WyoTech. This is due to relatively low heat waste being released during operation. • More torque: The resource

“For Dummies” says that, because of the way diesel vehicles burn fuel, their engines provide more torque to the driveshaft than gasoline engines. As a result, they may have greater towing capacity and accelerate more quickly from a standing start than vehicles with gasoline engines. • No radio frequency: Diesels do not emit radio frequency because they do

not require high-voltage ignition systems. This prevents issues with a vehicle’s electronic system, including frequency interference. • Cheaper fuel: Although diesel fuel costs more per gallon at the pump in the United States, the overall fuel cost for kilowatts runs between 30 and 50 percent lower than for gasolinepowered engines, says Carophile. That can add up to considerable savings over time. • Synthetic fuel acceptance: Diesel engines may run on non-petroleum-based biofuels more easily than gas engines, which will need to be significantly modified to accept alternative fuels. • Less CO: Diesel engines produce minimal carbon monoxide, which is why diesel engines are the choice in environments where gasoline engine exhaust would be deadly, such as in closedin spaces. Motorists looking to reduce their automotive carbon footprints may want to give serious consideration to vehicles with diesel engines.

Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves. • Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes. • Keep valuables hidden. Don’t leave purchases, cell phones, money (even loose change), expensive sunglasses, or electronics within sight in the vehicle. • Exercise caution with spare keys. Do not hide a spare key under the vehicle or in an obvious spot. Car thieves are wise to these tactics. Also, if you’ve lent a spare key to someone, ask for it back promptly. • Invest in a car alarm. Car alarms can deter thieves because they draw attention

helpful. • Use various locks. Manufacturers make steering wheel locks and brake locks that render cars undrivable unless they are removed. • Be visible when parking. Choose highly visible parking spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near security cameras and in welllit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves.

• Don’t leave it running. According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions — such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the urge to “warm up” the vehicle by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition. • Get VIN etching. Etching

the VIN on windows makes it more expensive for car thieves to resell a vehicle or its parts without having to make replacements. • Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen,

GPS tracking devices can help cops recover the vehicle more rapidly. Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.
