This Week’s Community Events more inside… Glenville To Hold Special Election April 16 GLENVILLE – The Town of Glenville will conduct a town-wide special election on Monday, April 16th, from 12 noon-9pm on the question of whether the Receiver of Taxes should be an appointed office or an elected office. The Glenville Town Board adopted a local law on February 15, 2012, abolishing the elective office of Receiver of Taxes and creating the appointive office of Receiver of Taxes. This local law requires a special town-wide election. There will be one polling place, the Glenville Municipal Center, 18 Glenridge Road. In making the position appointed rather than elected, the Town Board was able to make the Receiver of Taxes a part-time position at approximately half the former salary and saving the cost of retirement system contribution and health insurance costs by hiring an experienced, qualified professional. The Town also plans to retain the services of a local bank to provide town residents with additional, more convenient options to pay their town taxes. The proposed Local Law would also remove the position of Receiver of Taxes from partisan, political elections. For additional information, contact James MacFarland, Director of Operations, Town of Glenville at 688-1221. (P)

Even though it’s a little early to get out in the vegetable garden, except for planting pea seeds, there are still important gardening tasks to tackle. Like other avid perennial gardeners, I’ve been poking around my beds to see who’s waking up. The first crocus is poking up and the daffodils and tulips won’t be far behind. These signs of activity are welcome indeed. Even though it’s cool, it’s time to apply our fertilizer so, as the plants emerge from hibernation, nutrients will be waiting in the soil for them. Early feeding sets the stage for healthy plants all season long. Lawns, trees, shrubs and perennials all benefit from early feeding but which plant food is best for what? When you are out shopping for a lawn food, first consider the condition of your lawn. If your lawn is healthy and well established, you’re looking for a regular high nitrogen lawn food. I recommend using a lawn food that provides nitrogen in fast AND slow release forms. You will often see “bargain” lawn foods advertised. This lawn food will be cheap but may not be a bargain. Often the nitrogen in these cheap lawn foods releases so quickly that the grass plants cannot utilize it. It’s like getting a week’s worth of food served to for supper on Monday and then going hungry the rest of the week. It doesn’t make sense for you or your lawn. Look on the bag to see if the nitrogen is derived from more than one or two sources. Lawn foods that are formulated to be fast and slow release, they cost a bit more but you’ll be better off in the long run since you will feed less often. When I plant perennials I’m a fanatic about using bone meal. I know by looking at the three numbers on the bag that bone meal is almost all phosphorous. It is a wonderful source of long lasting phosphorous but it doesn’t provide any nitrogen or potassium. So, each year I side dress my perennials with additional food. The food I choose for them will be slow release and fairly balanced with slightly more phosphorous for more flowers. Espoma Flower-tone is my current favorite. There are other quality products available. I again want to avoid cheap, fast release fertilizer. To feed the perennials, I’ll roughen up the soil around each plant being sure to stay far enough away from the crown to avoid damaging the roots. I’ll sprinkle the fertilizer sparingly and according to the directions on the label around the plant being careful not to get any on the crown. Then I’ll lightly mix the food into the soil with my trusty cultivator and then water. For trees and large shrubs, an easy way to apply nutrients is by pounding in some of those tree food spikes that are made of compressed fertilizer. When you go to the garden center, you’ll notice that there are different formulas for different plants. The spikes for evergreens and shade trees are higher in nitrogen and those for fruit tree are higher in phosphorus to enhance fruit production. You may have large, flowering shrubs like lilacs that you want to feed with spikes. The fruit tree spikes, with their higher phosphorus formula would make them appropriate for use on flowering shrubs as well. Be careful to follow the directions when using fertilizer spikes. They should be driven into the ground AWAY from the trunk or stem of the plant you’re feeding. The tiny roots that take up the nutrients are about the same distance from the trunk as the outermost branch tips. For trees, it’s easy to figure out where to place the spikes. Simply walk away from the trunk until you are standing under the outermost branch tips and pound in the spikes at that circumference. How many spikes you’ll need to use is determined by the diameter of the trunk. There are directions on the package. Follow them. More isn’t necessarily better. If you use too many spikes or place them too close to the trunk, you may do more harm than good. For smaller shrubs and perennials, you’ll want to use a gentle, granular food. I like the Espoma products. You can pound holes around small shrubs (under the outermost branch tips) and pour the appropriate amount of plant food into them. When in doubt, less is best. On the perennials, I’ll dig a shallow trench well away from the crown of the plant and apply a modest amount of gentle Espoma Flower-tone plant food. Follow the recommendations on the package and, again, when in doubt, less is best. If you can get out there at the first opportunity and get your nutrients into the soil early, your landscape plants will be able to take advantage of them and have the best season possible. Thanks for the read

Advice from the Pros: Do Not Neglect Auto Service (MS) -- The average age of a personal vehicle on the road today is more than 11 years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it’s natural to rein in spending. But the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) warn that putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals is false economy. Small issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example, failure to replace worn brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -- both relatively easy services for qualified auto technicians -- can result in expensive brake rotor service or costly replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified auto technicians. Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that’s neglected, notes ASE. To help consumers choose a repair shop that fits their needs, ASE offers the following checklist: * Look for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays. * Look for a courteous staff, with a service consultant willing to answer all of your questions. * Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment.

Save $50 on Timing Belt and Waterpump replacement DON'T WAIT TOO LONG! A broken timing belt can cause extensive damage to your Honda's engine. Refer to your owner's manual for recommended replacement. Must present this offer when order is written. Offer may not be used in combination with other offers. Not valid on previous services. Some vehicles excluded. Valid through 5/31/12.

* Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it usually handles your type of repair work. * Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards. * Look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work, and certification by ASE. * Look for the ASE sign or logo; it means the shop employs nationally certified technicians. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair

through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of certification. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign. Spring Car Care Pennysaver • Moneysaver • The Bi-Weekly GPS usage tips Today’s drivers rely heavily on GPS technology, or global positioning system devices. GPS has revolutionized the way people drive and use maps and directions. While there are no hard statistics on the number of people who own GPSdevices, thousands of people have either a GPSdevice that comes pre-equipped in a car that they purchased or a stand-alone device that was bought after the fact. These devices come pre-loaded with maps that work with satellites in space. The GPS receiver figures out the distance to each and uses this information to deduce the location of the device in a process called trilateration. GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind. * Place the GPSdevice where it won’t obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time. * Don’t treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way. *Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area. * Have a general idea where you are going so you’ll know if the GPS is potentially guiding you in the wrong direction and can maneuver in advance.

“Empties for Animals" Campaign To Run All Year! Goldstein Auto Group Helping Mohawk Hudson Humane Society ALBANY, NY (02/29/2012)- What started out to be a Super bowl campaign to beneӾt The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has snowballed into a year round program for The Goldstein Family Auto Group, Thanks to the hundreds of donations of cans and bottles The Goldstein Family Auto Group has received from the community, coupled with the MHHS 125th Anniversary, Goldstein Auto is committed to continuing their part of the campaign year round. Since coming on board, The Goldstein Family Auto Group has set up depositories in each of their four dealerships to help collect cans and bottles from patrons, staӽ, and families, wanting to help the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, New York. The cans and bottles turn into dollars for the organization to help care for and place the animals they have at the shelter. "Our Goal for the 125 Anniversary is to encourage the community to help collect 1,562,500 which would translate into $125,000 to MHHS. " said Stefanie Goldstein, a principal in the Goldstein Family Auto Group and daughter of President Alan Goldstein. "This is only 637,500 more bottles and cans than last year. If everyone continues the momentum we have had already, we can do it!" Last year the Society's "Empties for Animals" program generated over $74,000 in revenue. Individual members of the community, school groups and other organizations dropped oӽ more than 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans based upon the originating distributor, which in turn generated 8 cents per can/bottle instead of the regular 5-cent redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the programs were used to beneӾt the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. "As an added incentive The Goldstein Family has commissioned our trucks and drivers to make pick ups from around their area neighborhoods, restaurants, schools, event destinations, anywhere they need us to" added Stefanie. "If everyone who does not save their recyclables currently starts saving them, we can make a huge diӽerence." With Earth Day just a few months away, weekly totals received at all Goldstein Auto locations will increase as the group does plan to participate in "A Billion Acts of Green" one of the Earth Day organizations April programs. They are using the power of their advertising, website, facebook page and show rooms to spread the word to recycle and help save abandon, elderly and abused animals rescued and cared for by The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

People can drop oӽ their cans and bottles to any of the four Goldstein locations: ~ Goldstein Buick/GMC, 1671 Central Avenue, Albany ~ ~ Goldstein Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 613 Loudon Rd, Latham ~ (across from Hoӽman's Playland) ~ Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue, Albany ~ ~ Goldstein Mitsubishi, 1673 Central Avenue, Albany ~

SCHENECTADY – The ALCO Heritage Museum will hold its grand opening on Sunday, June 10 from 1-5pm at its new site at 1910 Maxon Road in Schenectady. The ALCO Heritage Museum is dedicated to preserving the cultural and industrial history of Schenectady, in particular that history involving the American Locomotive Company and its antecedent, the Schenectady Locomotive Works. The Schenectady Locomotive Works was created in 1848 by John Ellis and in 1901 merged with seven other steam locomotive manufacturers to form the American Locomotive Company. Among the large historical artifacts on hand will be a M-47 Patton Tank and the 1909 Black Beast Automobile, both built by ALCO, and an operating Canadian Pacific Railroad locomotive. Also on display will be a number of exhibits, including a model railroad, “ALCO and the Civil War,” “ALCO and Defense,” ALCO oral histories, an erecting shop, and a FA-1 Locomotive Simulator that is currently under construction. For more information on the event, contact museum director Jim Cesare at (716) 238-3768 or visit www. alcoheritagemuseum.org. The event is free to the public. (P)

Dealing with unemployment-related depression Unemployment comes with a host of unwanted side effects. Among the more obvious are financial concerns and lifestyle changes that reflect a loss of income, such as dining at home instead of nights on the town, or cutting back on certain luxuries. One of the lesser discussed but potentially harmful side effects of unemployment is depression. Several studies have indicated a link between poverty and social isolation and depression. When unemployed for long periods of time -- a reality for many workers in a job market the Center for Economic Policy and Research considers the worst since the Great Depression -- the resulting isolation from colleagues and friends coupled with a loss of income can be enough to trigger depression. To the millions of workers across the globe who are unemployed and dealing with depression, the simplest solution might be finding a job. But that’s no small task, and men and women must find additional ways to cope with depression as they continue to look for work.

finding a job. Continue a schedule that mimics the one you had while you were working. This schedule should include getting up and showering each morning. This allows you to maintain contact with old colleagues and stick to the same social schedule you followed while employed. * Volunteer. When dealing with the daily grind, many people lament that life goes so fast they don’t have time to do things like volunteer in their community. Now that time is on your side, make the most of it and volunteer, whether it’s coaching youth sports or helping out at a nearby hospital. Spending time positively and making an impact on others’ lives is a great way to lift your own spirits. Another way unemployed men and women can volunteer is within their own industries. If you were laid off but still have a passion for your work, volunteer your

time. This is a great way to stay in touch with the industry and make new contacts who might be able to help you find a new job. * Take a break. Finding a job in today’s market is essentially a full-time job. While it’s important to be diligent in a job search, it’s just as important to take a break. Rest on weekends and spend time with friends and family just like you would if you were still employed. Doing so helps recharge the batteries and can help fight off feelings of isolation that may or may not exist. * Eat right and exercise. Maintaining or adopting a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle that includes daily exercise can be effective at combating depression. Daily exercise enhances mood in a positive way, and while no specific foods have been clinically proven to ease symptoms of depression, some foods support wellness, repair and growth. A Spanish study that examined nearly 10,000 men

and women found that rates of depression increased in men as their folate intake decreased. Folate is a vitamin of the B complex found in leafy green vegetables. The same study found that women whose B12 intake decreased were also more prone to depression.

Many men and women may use their hectic schedules as an excuse to eat a poor diet and avoid daily exercise. Unemployed men and women can use this respite from the daily grind to adopt a healthier lifestyle, one that can even help combat depression that might result from unemployment.

One thing men and women must also remember when dealing with depression that might have resulted from unemployment is they are not alone. With millions of professionals currently out of work, support groups have formed to help men and women combat depression and better cope with the side effects of unemployment.

Let these films satisfy your need for speed Car guys and gals love their vehicles, but they also love their movies about cars. When not tooling around in your ride this spring and summer, the following car movies should satisfy your need for speed. Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen stars as the San Francisco cop looking to find the kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the ‘68 Mustang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double. American Graffiti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trouble. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard, this classic was directed by George

Lucas of “Star Wars fame. The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal cross-country car race. A who’s who of stars, including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed flick. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The Fast and the Furious

(2001): An undercover cop infiltrates the underbelly of Los Angeles street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special effects than substance.

Small Business Is Making A Big Difference In Our Towns The recent surge in membership at the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County has been due to a strong emphasis on placing small, family owned businesses squarely at the center of all our major initiatives. No, that doesn·t mean we·re abandoning large companies – rather we believe that our approach has brought even greater enthusiasm from the big Ӿrms too. Under this approach, small and large businesses have actually begun Ӿnding ways to partner in unprecedented ways to bring about some really exciting happenings, which will be for the beneӾt of everyone.

Pete Bardunias,

President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Last Wednesday night in Halfmoon, small business owners rose in support of the proposed Halfmoon Village and Yacht Club, lending their voice to that of landowner Gail Krause and spokesmen for the Chazen Companies in asserting that this multimillion dollar development will help invigorate the economy of the Exit 8 corridor as well as beneӾt the Mohawk River waterfront and canal businesses. The town board showed great leadership in voting to proceed with the project. Similarly, in Clifton Park a consortium of large and small businesses led by giants Turner Construction, GE and Momentive are working with Shenendehowa High School students to restore Historic Lock 19 which dates back to 1842. This new model of collaboration will create opportunities for historic, ecological and scientiӾc study, as well as help attract visitors to the site who will also stop and shop in our nearby stores. You can volunteer for the Canal Clean Sweep on April 21 – call 518-371-7748 for details. Exciting opportunities also exist in Ballston and Charlton, where farms and agriculture related businesses can beneӾt from stronger ties to “Main Street” entrepreneurs. Similar possibilities can be found in Waterford, Malta, Mechanicville and Stillwater. The fun part is working to orchestrate all these great partnerships. Get involved in the action and make a diӽerence in our communities!
