In my last few columns, I’ve written about the legends and lore of the plants we share the holidays with (along with some winter driving adventures). While reading about holiday plants, I came across all kinds of interesting Christmas lore. Take Santa for instance. The Jolly Old Elf is subject to a good bit of ridicule by some for being a commercialized figure that detracts from the “true” religious meaning of Christmas. While its true that Santa’s been used to sell everything from cola to cars, the evolution of Saint Nicholas to our modern Santa is a rich tale that reaches back to the early days of Christianity. The earliest legend of St. Nicholas tells us that he was born into a wealthy family in Asia Minor around 200. Though wealthy, Nicholas’ family was well known for charitable kindness. An only child, Nicholas was devoted to the prayers and fasting that his religion demanded. Eventually Nicholas inherited his parents fortune as well as their love of giving. Indeed, he devoted his whole life to investing that fortune in the well being of the unfortunate; especially children. One of the earliest accounts of Nicholas’ goodness revolves around the three young daughters of a local noble family. It seems that the family had fallen on hard times and their fortune had been lost including the dowries of the three daughters. Without hope of marriage, the three daughters resolved to sell their bodies to restore their families fortune. Nicholas overheard their plan and resolved to solve the dilemma. He snuck through the village at night and dropped a bag of gold coins through an open window. He did this three nights in a row, providing each of the daughters with a dowry to replace those that had been lost. This episode led, eventually, to St. Nicholas becoming the patron saint of not only maidens but of pawnbrokers and bankers as well. Even today the symbol used to identify a pawnshop is three gold balls representing the three bags of gold that St. Nicholas delivered so many centuries ago. Nicholas’ reputation as a protector of children was solidified by a miracle he performed shortly after he had been elected as Bishop of Myra. The story goes that a mother had placed her infant into a pot of water over a fire to give it a bath. When the mother heard that the famous bishop, Nicholas, was in town she rushed to see him, forgetting all about her baby. When she met the Bishop, she suddenly remembered her baby in the pot over the fire. She begged Nicholas to help her. Nicholas calmly told her to return home. When she arrived, she found the baby laughing and playing with the bubbles in the now-boiling water. Nicholas’ best-known miracle occurred during a great famine. While all in the countryside were starving, Nicholas went to the city’s port. There were grain ships there that had stopped on their way to Alexandria. Nicholas promised the captains that, if they would unload a part of the grain to feed the citizens, it would be restored before they reached Alexandria. Reluctantly, the captains did as Nicholas bid and not only was their cargo miraculously restored but the unloaded grain increased as well providing enough grain for bread to feed everyone through two more years of famine! There are many other miracles that are attributed to the Holy Bishop Nicholas including the grisly tale of three scholars (some accounts say three boys) who were murdered and dismembered by an evil innkeeper who hid the parts in a pickling barrel (or baked in a pie in another version). The innkeeper’s crime was invisible to all but Nicholas who finds the victims and restores them to life through prayer. As accounts of these miracles spread throughout the land, Nicholas became popular as one who protected the young and weak and could be counted on to come to their aid in time of need. Tradition places Nicholas’ death on December 6TH in 342. Even in death, St Nicholas continued to serve the weak and infirm through oil that is reported to have flowed from his tomb. The miracles attributed to this oil are as awe inspiring as the miracles performed by St. Nicholas himself. In the 800s, Nicholas was canonized and eventually embraced as the patron saint of countries as far east as Russia, as far south as Italy and as far west as The Netherlands. By 1000, St. Nicholas was the best known saint throughout Europe and western Asia. He was established as one who performed miracles and delivered gifts in the dead of night. At this time, St. Nicholas was generally portrayed as a tall, thin man with a dark beard dressed in the red robes of a bishop. The anniversary of his death was widely celebrated. More next week…thanks for the read.

Christmas Tree Debate People have firm beliefs on what’s better for the holidays: a natural tree from the nearby tree farm or an artificial tree purchased at the store. Proponents for both side haves their share of opinions regarding which is more environmentally friendly or fiscally responsible. Christmas celebrants who want to veer away from the argument completely can select a live tree (with roots intact) for their tree of choice this year. Christmas trees that can be planted afterward are easily found at lawn and garden re-

tailers or from the very same tree farms from which trees can be hewn. Chances are the tree is already packaged in a large pot, to make transport a little easier. A homeowner who is considering a live tree will have to decide where the tree will be planted afterward and plan for that location as soon as possible. That’s because it can be particularly difficult to dig a large hole in which to plant a tree when the ground is thoroughly frozen. Laying the groundwork for the hole in advance will make post-Christmas planting possible.

Tree experts say that a live tree should not exceed 5 feet in height. Larger, more mature trees can have difficulty acclimating to transplanting and may go into shock. Try to keep the tree outdoors as much as possible and only have it indoors to decorate for a maximum of 2 weeks, otherwise the warm, indoor temperatures may mimic spring and bring the tree out of dormancy. When getting ready to transplant the tree outside, transition it back to the cold by keeping it in the garage for a few days before moving outside.

Results important when choosing a charity When choosing a charity, individuals often find it difficult to narrow down the list of deserving candidates. A host of factors must come into consideration, but most individuals end up choosing a charity they have some personal connection with. While it’s important to donate to a charity you feel strongly about, it’s also important to do your homework before making a donation. One of the more important factors to consider is the charity’s results. Charities vary greatly in their ability to bring about meaningful change, with some producing better results than others. When determining how effective a charity is, there are several things to look for prior to making a donation. The Mission Can the charity adequately explain the need for its existence? A charity should be able to explain in detail the reason for its existence and that there is a significant demand for its services and programs.

Reporting of Results A charity should have a statement as to how they monitor their results. Their methodology for monitoring results should be clearly stated and available to prospective donors to examine. When examining the results, look to see how frequently results are reported and how much the results relate to the charity’s mission statement. If results are older and less specific, consider another charity. Also, when asking for a report on the charity’s results, ask if these results were validated by an outside source. Activities A charity should be transparent, providing prospective donors with more than just heartfelt stories as to what inspired and continues to inspire the charity. Ask about the charity’s activities related to its mission. For example, if a charity’s mission

how the charity has adjusted to past successes and/or failures. A charity’s past results, be they good or bad, should help shape how it goes about its business going forward. If the charity continues along the same path without regard to past results, this should be a red flag to donors.

* Don’t start spending until you have devised a repayment plan. Particularly during the holidays, consumers tend to spend first and worry about payments later. However, this is a dangerous approach. Before spending a dime, have a plan to pay bills already in place. This helps shoppers avoid going over budget and finding themselves in a nightmare come January when the bills are due. When devising a plan, be as specific as possible, such as setting a February 1 deadline to pay off all credit cards. The more specific you can be, the more likely the plan is going to be successful. * Beware of retailer credit cards. Retailer credit cards entice customers during the holiday season, typically offering 10 percent back on the first purchase after applying and receiving the card. While this entices many consumers to sign on the dotted line, shoppers should know retail credit cards often come with high interest rates. For shoppers who plan to carry a balance, these interest rates can add up, negating the benefit of that 10 percent discount at the register. If a retail credit card offers a reasonable interest rate or something like 18 months with no interest on more expensive purchases, then it might be worth considering. But for the most part consumers are better off simply paying full price and not signing up for a card they don’t need just to save an extra 10 percent. * Be careful when using multiple cards. Using several cards tends

to give consumers a false sense of security. Consumers who use multiple credit cards during the holidays often feel this keeps them from piling up a massive balance on one card. However, the best strategy is to simply use the card that boasts the best interest rate. * Know your balance and where you stand. A holiday shopping spree can quickly grow out of control, but shoppers must know their balances at all times. Exceeding the balance typically results in hefty penalties, and those penalties are something most shoppers simply can’t afford during the often costly holiday season. If one card is maxed out, shoppers might want to cease their holiday spending altogether. A financial situation in which a person is carrying a maxed-out credit card is never ideal, and shoppers should not dig themselves a deeper hole by spending more on top of that. Instead, they can work toward paying down the balance and spending less on holiday gifts. * Use credit cards when buying gifts online. One positive way to use credit cards when holiday shopping is to use them when buying gifts online. Credit cards offer consumers more protection against fraudulent purchases than debit cards, so consumers should always use credit cards when shopping online. The holiday season is a fun time of year, but consumers can quickly spoil their season if they aren’t responsible when using credit cards to make their holiday purchases.

Hannah is a 10 year old small, quiet and friendly beagle mix who recently had her first treatment for curable heart worm disease. She needs to be kept quiet for about 8 weeks and then she will be just fine. She would love a quiet home with a senior, but she’d get along with just about anyone. She’s had a rough life, many litters of pups, and at 10 she was going to be put to sleep because she had heart worm and was pregnant again, and couldn’t possibly survive another litter of puppies. We felt Hannah deserved a second chance to live out the rest of her life as someone’s pampered pooch. Open your home and heart for this lovely little lady.
