Could someone please tell me what happened to fall? It seems that we had a week of it and then winter just took over. Planting tulips and other bulbs wasn’t the pleasant task it normally is. That reminds me, lots of folks have been asking if it’s too late to plant fall bulbs. The answer is no. You can plant daffodils and all the other spring flowering bulbs until the ground freezes. We need to plant these bulbs in the fall because thy need to get chilled over the winter for at least 8 weeks. I know I don’t have to tell you that our winters last WAY longer than 8 weeks so there’s still plenty of time to get them in. Whether we’ll get any warm days to tackle the task is another question. Maybe we’ll have an “Indian Summer” still. There’s always that hope. Business at my birdfeeder has been a brisk as the weather lately. I’m happy to see that there are lots of Tufted Titmice again. I haven’t seen too many the last few years. I don’t know what happened but they seem to be on the rebound in my area at least. With the return of cold weather, gardeners must find comfort indoors. My houseplants, which have had to share my attention with their hardy outdoor cousins, now revel in the care lavished on them. Some of them spent the summer outside and have gotten trimmed back to help them adjust to lower light conditions indoors. My collection of miniature geraniums gets groomed and trimmed for the first time in a couple of months. As the sun dives toward the southern horizon, the light in my south windows improves. This will stimulate a new flowering cycle to cheer me up during the crisp, cold days ahead. For me, having flowering houseplants makes the winter months more bearable, keeping my spirits up when spring seems far away indeed. The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all flowering houseplants. Their prolific flowering habit and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories of great grandma’s prize violet whose descendants are still grown and loved by current family members.

DON’T PAY TAXES on structures that are not usable or wanted! Complete demolition of houses, garages, barns, buildings...any size removed quickly and cleanly! Fire damage cleanup. Inside of buildings and warehouses cleaned out. Land clearing. Prompt, professional service. Reas. rates. Rick Carbone Excavating 696-3000.

The first requirement to consider for African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many find that a bright north window is the ideal spot. They also thrive when grown under fluorescent lights. Violets require daytime temperature of 70 degrees or more and need to be kept above 64 at night to thrive. They like their soil to be kept lightly moist by not soggy wet. You’ll want to use room temperature water to avoid shocking them. Use a good African Violet food about every 4th or 5th watering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They’ll flower more if they fell a bit cramped. Use shallow plastic or ceramic pots; clay pots dry too quickly to be beneficial to African Violets.

GARAGE DOOR GARY: Garage doors, electric openers, service. Garage door openers make great gifts! Call for free estimate. 399-6102

If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night then you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A cousin of the African Violet, the Streptocarpus (AKA: Cape Primrose) is a great alternative. The Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as the African Violet. It should also be kept evenly moist but is far more forgiving than the violet of accidental dryness.

Monday Noon Programs SCHENECTADY – The Friends of Schenectady County Public Library will offer a new series of Books Sandwiched In programs at the Central Library, 99 Clinton Street in Schenectady. On November 7, Phil Adams will discuss Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Kruschchev and the Most Dangerous Place on Earth by Frederick Kempe. The programs are open to the public and are held in the McChesney Room, beginning at 12pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch; beverages are available for a nominal fee. (P)

The Human-Animal Connection SCOTIA – In Their Own Words: The Human-Animal Connection Program at the APF. We’ve all wondered what our pets would say if they could only talk. Join us for a fascinating evening on Thursday, November 10 at 6pm with Susan Hamlin, who will share with us her talent for communicating with animals. Based in Saratoga Springs, Susan consults with people and animals worldwide. In addition to interspecies communication, her work includes energy medicine and holistic care, classes and mentoring for all levels of developing communicators, equine rehabilitation and humane advocacy. For more information about Susan and her work, visit www. Animal-Whisper.com. Held at the Animal Protective Foundation Ed Center, 53 Maple Ave., Scotia. Admission is $10, seating is limited. Reserve your spot by calling 374-3944 x119. (A)

For the very cool home, consider the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when temperatures drop below 60 at night and won’t be happy if it gets warmer than 65 in the daytime. Keep them barely moist and feed about every forth of fifth watering during the flowering period. It’s not uncommon for a Cyclamen to maintain a flowering period of three months or longer if not over watered. These three plants are all excellent candidates for indoor color due to their modest light requirements. Remember, the most common mistake folks make is over watering. If your house is dry and you want to provide extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel filled tray and fill the tray with water. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating water passes by the leaves. Be sure the pot isn’t actually sitting in the water but on the gravel above the water. Nothing kills a plant more quickly than drowning. If you’re lucky enough to have a south-facing window or, better yet, a sunroom, then there’s almost no limit to the flowering beauties you can grow. Thanks for the read.

Furniture Arranging 101 When presented with an empty room in a new home or apartment, most people are a bit apprehensive about where to start. It can be difficult to picture where to place a sofa or how to arrange a chaise lounge. Although interior decorators may seem to have the knack for knowing where to place furniture, arranging items that are already owned or new furniture is something just about anyone can master. Before furniture can be placed, certain questions should be answered and room layouts examined. Consider the following: * Is the room used to travel through to another room? If so, a pathway will need to be left so that walking unhindered is possible.

* Where are the doors and windows located? Furniture should not be placed where it can interfere with a door being opened fully or block too much light. * How is the room used? For example, furniture shouldn’t be placed in a family room so that individuals constantly have to walk past the television and block watchers’ views. If a room is used as a sitting space, furniture should be geared around bookshelves or a fireplace. * What space is available? Too much furniture in a room can create the appearance of clutter. It can also make maneuvering around the room difficult. Keep furniture scale and quantity in mind when decorating. It may be wise to remove some pieces if the room is overrun with items.

WWW.VISCUSIS.COM Once the general idea of where furniture will be placed is decided, it helps to take measurements to ensure everything will fit. There’s little point hefting around heavy furniture only to move it back to its starting position if something doesn’t fit correctly. Making a reduced-scale model of the room and moving paper cut-outs of the furniture is much easier on the back than moving the furniture itself. There also is software that can be installed on the computer that enables homeowners to see how furniture will look once arranged. Now that the time has come to place the furniture, follow these guidelines. * Coffee tables or ottomans should be set 14 to 18 inches away from the couch. Adjust accordingly to meet the needs of homeowners. * Televisions should be placed at a distance three-times the size of the screen. However, some of the very-large televisions will simply have to be placed closer. Otherwise they could very well be in the next room. * The average adult requires 20 inches of breathing room for dining room chairs. Allow an additional 16 inches of room for pushing the chairs out to get up from the seat. * Make sure the edge of a bed is at least 24 inches away from a wall so that sleepers can enter and exit the bed comfortably.

Create a Spa Experience at Home People looking to escape stress often turn to spa treatments for rest and relaxation. However, if trips to the spa for massages and facials aren’t in the budget, create a spa experience at home. Stress is a big health problem. Over 50 percent of Americans are concerned about the level of stress in their lives. And 62 percent of Americans say that it’s their jobs that contribute to the most amount of stress.

Stress can exacerbate existing health conditions and lead to new ones. Individuals may feel fatigued, irritable, depressed, overeat, undereat and suffer other consequences if overstressed. Doctors often suggest therapies to combat stress in people’s lives. One such therapy can be massage or spa treatments popular in many salons. But these services can be expensive and might be an indulgence better left as an occasional

splurge. Those interested in reaping some of the benefits of spa treatments at home can try the following ideas. * Invest in the right equipment. Purchase an ultra-soft and thick robe and slippers. Stock up on loofah sponges, long-handled bath brushes, wash cloths, bath salts, and moisturizing creams. Simply using professional products can seem indulgent. * Homeowners with a spa bathtub can indulge in soothing jet-propelled massage whenever they desire. If installing a new tub is not in the cards, purchase a spa mat that can be suction-cupped to the bottom of a traditional bathtub. An external pump blows air bubbles through the mat, creating the same effect as a spa tub. * Rely on aromatherapy. There are many essential oils that can be added to bath water or applied to the body. Depending on the aroma, a person can induce calm and

Give a Great Room a Warmer Feel Many homeowners admit to having ideas about what to do with their homes even before they sign on the dotted line. When a home buyer is shopping for a home, he or she often can’t help envisioning how a given home will look with his or her possessions inside.

homeowners is the open floor plan. These great rooms are ideal for big gatherings of family and friends, but can also confuse homeowners hoping to distinguish between two rooms that might have been combined. For example, great rooms commonly combine a living area and dining A growing trend among many room, giving the room a more

spacious look but also making it difficult to confidently state where one room ends and the other begins. While great rooms can give the home a relaxed and spacious feel, homeowners can cozy-up such rooms with a few simple tricks of the trade.

SELLING BRAND OF HANDHELD OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT IN AMERICA

”Number one selling brand” is based on syndicated Irwin Broh Research (commercial landscapers) as well as independent consumer research of 2010 U.S. sales and market share data for the gasoline-powered handheld outdoor power equipment category combined sales to consumers and commercial landscapers.

* Accessorize. Certain accessories can match the scale of a room with a high ceiling to make the room seem cozier. Tall plants and bookcases, for instance, work really well when furnishing a room with an especially high ceiling. * Remove or avoid mirrors. Mirrors always make a room seem larger, something homeowners should avoid when furnishing a great room. If mirrors must be included, place them in spots where they will not create the illusion of more space. * Go big with furniture. This is a no-brainer, but larger furniture can make a great room seem more cozy. When looking for tables, like coffee tables or end tables, avoid tables with glass tops as these create the illusion of space in a fashion similar to mirrors.

The placement of furniture can also play a role in how cozy a room feels. Grouping furniture, such as placing a sofa and loveseat around the television and placing an armchair near a window for reading, can make a room feel more intimate. Furniture does not have to be placed solely around the edges of a room, especially in larger rooms that homeowners want

to give a warmer feel. * Let the floor be your guide. Oftentimes, the floor is the best means to distinguishing between rooms. Rugs can be placed on wood flooring to help distinguish between rooms, and homeowners can even use different types of wood flooring to ensure residents and guests know which room is which.

Economical Remodeling Tips on Color Selection for Affordable Interior Painting

According to the Paint Quality Institute, the do-it-yourself cost of repainting a room is typically well under $100, about the same as taking a family of four to the movies. Unlike a night at the movies, however, the enjoyment of a freshly painted room will last for years. Start by visiting your local paint retailer, asking to see the color display. The fun begins by looking through the color cards and envisioning what

OR VISIT US AT WWW.SERVICESOLUTIONSINC.COM your room will look like with an entirely new color scheme. If you’re the decisive type, you might quickly spot the perfect color for the room you’re repainting. For everyone

ceal all the colors on the card except for the one you are considering. By isolating the color, you’ll get a better idea of how the room will look in a particular hue.

First, when evaluating color options, con-

Second, evaluate the color both in daylight and at night when all the light is artificial. You may be surprised how different a color can look when lighting conditions change. (Paint colors usually look darker at night, in shadow, and on cloudy days.)

Third, consider when you most often use the room. If you are painting a breakfast area, be sure you like the way the color looks in morning light; but if you’re painting a bedroom, it’s more important that the color be pleasing under artificial light. Fourth, be aware that color tends to be more intense on a large area than a small one. A color that looks just right on a color card may be too dark or too bold when applied to your walls. For safety’s sake, move down one degree of intensity on the card and choose a slightly lighter tint or shade. Finally, if you are still not certain of your choice of color, buy a small quantity of paint and apply a couple of large swatches to the walls. Live with the color for a day or two. You’ll soon know if you

missed the mark or nailed it. One final tip: Regardless of the color you choose, the Paint Quality Institute recommends that you use top quality 100 percent acrylic latex interior paint

for all of your projects. This advanced type of paint goes on evenly, typically “hides” the color below in just a single coat, has very little odor, and is very durable. By using it, your beautiful new paint job will last for years.

Lucy is a senior shepherd mix. Her pic doesn’t do her justice. She’s a very pretty girl. Lucy was found in the middle of the road in Bolton Landing. She was seen there several times before someone finally called animal control. Lucy was very matted and has only 1 eye. Her other eye was apparently surgically removed long and it seems she was a well cared for pet at some point. Who knows how she ended up in this predicament? Her tail is always wagging and she seems happy to finally be given a second chance for a forever home. Black ice is a thin coating of ice that forms on roadways and other surfaces. It often occurs from freezing drizzle, windblown snow or freezing condensation. Because black ice is so thin, the ice appears to be the same color of the surface material beneath the ice. Therefore, on asphalt roads, the ice can be nearly invisible and black in color.

Drunk driving fact Many people mistakenly assume that New Year’s Eve is the holiday responsible for the most drunk-driving accidents. Although champagne and other alcoholic drinks are often free-flowing on December 31, New Year’s Eve holds a distant second place to Thanksgiving for the most drunk driving-related fatalities. This is perhaps because Thanksgiving is a family holiday, and many people often feel pressure to drink more when family are around to have a good time.

Celebrating 50 Years of Worship

REXFORD – In recognition of 50 years of worship and service to the community, Faith Baptist Church Elder Board has designated Sunday, November 6 as a Day of Celebration at Faith. The theme of the day is, “Looking Back with Gratitude; Looking Forward with Hope.” Former Pastor, Dr. Douglas Fombelle, presently Dean of Bethel Seminary of the East will bring a greeting entitled, “Looking Back with Gratitude” with current Pastor, Rev. Dr. R. Peter Mason closing the service with, “Looking Forward with Hope.” Our new worship director, Paul Taddeo, will lead worship songs from the past and present. Recognition of founding members and many historical photos will add to the event. The community is invited to attend this celebration at the church, Sunday, November 6th, 8:30am and 11am worship services, with reception at 9:40am in the gym. The church is located at 11 Glenridge Rd. in Rexford. For more information, call 399-2220 x101. (A)
