Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefit until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH by Lawrence Cusma, OD 9 Gleason Road Scotia, NY 12302

Impact of High-Tech Classrooms Worries Parents Parents have some concern about the effects of the evolving technology in today’s classrooms, according to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2011 American “Eye-Q” survey. “Today’s classroom technology is extremely visual, making it critical for students to maintain excellent eye health,” says Dr. Cusma. “Binocular vision, focusing abilities as well as nearsightedness and farsightedness should be checked by an eye doctor yearly, particularly as students head back to school.” The increasing use of 3D imagery in the classroom may prove problematic for those who experience headaches, nausea or have problems with binocular vision. Students can help avoid computer vision syndrome by practicing the 20-20-20 rule: Take a 20-second break at least every 20 minutes of focused viewing, and view something 20 feet away. Studies show that people need to rest their eyes to keep them moist. Plus, staring off into the distance helps the eyes from locking into a clsoe-up position. The AOA further recommends that students take a 15-minute break for every two hours spent on computers or other digital devices.

How Do You Know it’s Time to Replace Your Brakes? Brake pads will tell you when they need replacement, but rotors are a different story. (MS) -- Your car’s brakes are one of your most important safety features. So it makes sense to be sure that they are maintained properly. Since brakes wear out as part of normal operation, it’s obvious that the worn parts should be identified and replaced as soon as possible. But how can you tell if the parts are worn enough to need replacing? Your local service technician has the knowledge and the tools to tell you what’s needed, but only after the car has been inspected. So how do you know when to bring your car in for service? Some disc brake pads have wear sensors that trigger a “service” light on your dash, or shims that start to make noise when the pads are getting down to the minimum. If you know what you are looking for, you can also check for wear by looking at the outside brake pad on the front wheel, which is visible on most cars. But rotors don’t have the benefits of a warning device, and in the past, they had to be physically examined and measured in order to determine the amount of wear. Fortunately, a new advanced brake rotor from Continental Corporation has been developed to solve this problem. Built-in wear indicator signals rotor replacement The ATE PremiumOne(R) Rotor features a patented RotorLife(R) wear indicator that provides a quick visual reference of rotor thickness and tells you if replacement is needed. The wear indicator’s elliptical grooves are machined into both sides of the rotor face at the minimum discard thicknesses recommended by the original equipment vehicle manufacturer. When these grooves wear out, its time to bring the car in and have the rotor replaced. It’s that simple. You can easily see the rotor wear for yourself without having to lift the car or remove the wheels. The wear indicators do not hurt the rotor’s performance in any way. In fact, they actually make it work better, which enhances the performance of your brake system. These wear grooves also serve to dissipate heat and gases, which helps to reduce brake fade and extends the life of your pads. For more information on how to get ATE PremiumOne Rotors for your vehicle ask your service technician, or contact Continental Corporation at salessupport-us@continental-corporation.com, or visit www.ate-na.com.

Beat The Rush

How Far Can You Really Go Between Oil and Filter Changes? (MS) -- For years, the 3,000 mile mark has been touted as the optimum interval for changing your motor oil and filter. It’s also an oil change interval that continues to be encouraged by the automotive oil change industry. Automobile manufacturers, oil filter manufacturers and lubricant manufacturers are now saying that you can safely extend oil drain intervals, saving you time, money and reducing the impact on the environment. Breakthroughs in lubrication and filtration are two reasons why oil change intervals can safely be extended. Numerous factors come in to play in determining the oil change interval you should follow, including whether your car is underr warranty, the car’s condition, the way you drive it, as well as oil andd filter selection. Every automobile manufacturer establishes a recommended oil change interval for each model they manufacture. Oil change intervals are now typically 5,000 to 7,500 miles for many new cars. You should follow your car manufacturer’s recommendations on oil and filter change intervals while the car is under warranty. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can extend your oil change and filter intervals by upgrading to a high quality synthetic motor oil and high performance oil filter. This will reduce the number of oil changes, saving you time and money while reducing the amount of oil purchased and disposed. There are a number of quality synthetic motor oils available from which to choose. High performance synthetic motor oils such as Royal Purple, Mobil1, etc., typically have much greater oxidation stability

Hours: Monday-Friday: 8:00am- 6:30pm Saturday: 8am-5pm by appointment than conventional mineral-based motor oils. Most lubricant manufacturers will give a recommended number of miles you can drive between oil changes under normal conditions. If you elect to upgrade your motor oil, you should also upgrade your oil filter. Inexpensive filters are typically made with the 3,000 mile interval in mind. These filters often use low-quality paper media for filtration and they deteriorate rapidly after 3,000 miles.

There are a number of new high performance premium oil filters on the market from manufacturers such as Royal Purple, Wix and K&N. These filters are made for extended oil drain intervals. For example, Royal Purple uses a proprietary long-life, micro-glass media that provides protection for 12,000 miles. It also provides an increased level of protection due to the density of the filtration. You can find out more at www.royalpurple.com

If your car is still under warranty, stick with the car manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals. If your car is no longer under warranty, you can go beyond the typical 3,000 mile oil change or beyond the oil change monitor’s recommendations by upgrading to a high performance synthetic motor oil and high performance oil filter. Just be sure to check recommended change interval for both the oil and filter your purchase.

The Empty Stocking Project, one of our most vital and rewarding undertakings, provides holiday gifts and necessities to over 1000 children and teens each year. At the heart of this ambitious endeavor are the many people and organizations that generously sponsor a child each year by purchasing gifts from a child’s “wish list”. If you are willing to sponsor a child, or for more information, please call and leave a voice message at 4485120 or call Kathy Kelly at 399-6629. Cash donations are also accepted and may be sent to: The Saratoga County Children’s Committee, PO Box 1254, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. (A)
