Army Trades Weekend At Saratoga National Historical Park

STILLWATER - In the Revolutionary War, armies had a lot more to do than fight. They employed a variety of professional tradesmen and women who worked to provide and repair supplies needed by the troops. Blacksmiths made or fixed ironwork; tailors and seamstress sewed and repaired clothing; Woodworkers built barrels, carriages, and wheels; Tinsmiths made artillery cartridge casings; Armorers repaired muskets; Cordwainers made military accoutrements and shoes for the troops. If you’d like to see how common military items were manufactured by hand in 1770’s Revolutionary America, well before the age of industrialization, this is a great opportunity! Chat with demonstrators during Army Trades Weekend Saturday and Sunday July 14-15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and learn how items are made 18th-century style. Craftsmen will be set up on the lawn at the Visitor Center. See the tools of the trade, ask questions, and learn about those who supported armies on the move. This event is free and open to the public. For more information about this or other events, please call the Visitor Center at 518-670-2985 or check our website at www.nps. gov/sara or on Facebook and Twitter: @SaratogaNHP

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Simone

What a beautiful 4-5 month old Rottie mix girl!!! We have heard that Simone is SUCH a sweetheart!! She has that friendly Rottie disposition that we know Rottie lovers adore! She became friends with little Garkfunkel while they were in Foster care, and now they are heading up North together so that they can find their furever homes! We know that she’s going to make a fantastic addition to a lucky family soon!

Rock & Dancer Meet Rock & Dancer!!! These two grew up in a home with their Momma, but now since they are around 10 weeks old and their Momma is getting spayed soon, it is time for them to find their own furever homes! We are not sure what their mix is, but we are told they are little Lab mixes! They are very well socialized and personable!

Wade Shepherd Duo These two are beautiful! If you are a lover of larger breeds like Shepherds and Hounds, we think you will really like these two! They are Shepherd/Hound mix babies who are around 3 months old and they are super sweet! They have been in foster care for a couple of weeks, where they have opened up and become incredibly friendly pups!

Heading for Home: Birdies and Brews Golf Event

by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Joseph Battaglia has been a fan of both thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing his whole life. The president of Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, Battaglia realized when he became a standardbred racehorse owner in Saratoga Springs that there is a critical need for the aftercare of retired racehorses in the racing industry. Battaglia, along with other current members of the Heading for Home board, started the charity to help with addressing the “where do they go after racing” issue. “We thought the concept of Heading for Home would be an option for owners to consider,” he said. Volunteers of Heading Home have various backgrounds in the local equine industries and in the local business community. Heading for Home board member and practicing attorney, Sarah Burger, has represented clients in the horse industry. A native of Saratoga, she grew up around horses and believes in the mission of Heading for Home. “The organization’s focus on the aftercare of racehorses in conjunction with its focus on pairing horses with equine therapy services is so important in the horse industry,” Burger said. “I am a part of this organization because I believe in what it is doing.” The common denominator: offering the racing industry an option for horses at retirement. “A success story about a racehorse going on to a purposeful and fulfilling life after racing activity is something that should be celebrated as much as any successes they may have had on the racetrack,” Battaglia said. It is no secret that Saratoga Springs is a horse town. “The horses are the stars of the show when they are on the track and have much more to give after their racing days have ended. It is a responsibility that everyone associated with racing in any way should share,” he said. He thinks the community should be concerned for horses as they age off the track. “Saratoga being a racing community should take this responsibility very seriously since so much of our local economy is driven by its history of hosting horseracing. We owe a lot back to the horses. Just look at the walls of almost any Photo: Retired racehorses establishment you go into in the Saratoga area and you will likely Where’s Danny and Rock see images of horses.” Dj competed at Saratoga Heading for Home is one way Battaglia and the all-volunteer tracks and went through the board and staff are trying to save one horse at a time. The program Heading for Home program. Photos by Tracey Buyce accepts both thoroughbreds and standardbreds. “We help transition Horse Photography. them from the racetrack environment to a more relaxed setting and then evaluate each for potential options to adopters,” he said. “Our horses have participated in equine assisted counseling programs while in the care of Heading for Home. We are in the process of developing our connections in the community to use our horses and facilities for physical therapy programs as well. We are open to coordinating with other charities to expand the potential uses for our horses to create as many off the track options as possible for the horses,” he said. Heading for Home is a member of the Saratoga Racehorse Aftercare Charitable Endeavors collation (RACE). “RACE works together with other local charities in support of our common racehorses’ aftercare missions, including hosting the upcoming Run/Walk for the Horses on September 1st,” Battaglia said. The Run/Walk will be held at the Saratoga Spa State Park and will benefit participating local non-profits that rescue and provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Heading for Home is also participating in a joint program with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at its farm this summer. On Tuesday, July 17 Heading for Home is hosting its second annual charity golf event at Fairways of Halfmoon Golf Club, which includes local craft beer tastings at its award ceremony. The cost is $125 a player and includes lunch, dinner, golf, cart and craft beer samples. Raffles and prizes will round out the day. One hundred percent of proceeds raised at the tournament benefits local Heading for Home programs. “We rely heavily on donations and other support to keep our programs going and possibly expand them when feasible,” Battaglia said. Anyone interested in directly supporting the golf event can participate as players, sponsors or perhaps even by providing raffle items for the event. “The topic of racehorse aftercare becomes a hot topic during the local thoroughbred meet but the need goes on throughout the year. If someone shares that concern this is one way for them to step up and be an active participant in making a difference,” Battaglia said. For more information on how to register for the golf event or to volunteer please visit the organization’s website at Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

3 Ways To Use Your Lawn To Improve Curb Appeal

Returns on home improvement projects vary. In its annual Cost vs. Value Report, Remodeling magazine notes the projects that yield the best returns on investment in a given year. But a host of factors, including the type of market (buyers’ or sellers’) and the region where the home is being sold, ultimately combine to determine if homeowners’ investments in home improvement projects will provide the returns they were hoping for.

Though there’s no way of guaranteeing a home improvement project will yield a great return, real estate professionals often cite improving curb appeal as an excellent way to attract prospective buyers and potentially get the asking price or more when selling the home. Improving curb appeal makes even more sense in today’s real estate market, when many people do their own searching via real estate websites such as Trulia or Zillow. When using such sites, buyers will likely be less inclined to click on a listing if exterior photos of the property are not eye-catching. Various projects, including tending to lawns and gardens, can improve curb appeal. An added benefit to focusing on landscaping to improve curb appeal is it promotes spending time outdoors in spring and summer. In addition, many lawn- and garden-related home improvement projects need not require professional expertise. 1. Maintain a lush green lawn. Lawns that fall into disrepair may not give buyers a correct impression about how homeowners maintained their homes. Lawns with multiple dead spots and grass that appears more brown than green may lead many buyers to assume that the home’s interior was equally ill-cared for. Maintaining lush green lawns is not as difficult as it may seem. Applying fertilizer and aerating at the appropriate times of year (this varies by region) can promote strong roots and healthy soil, making it easier for grass to survive harsh conditions like drought. When watering in summer, do so in early morning or evening so as little water is lost to evaporation as possible. 2. Address brown patch. Even well-maintained lawns can fall victims to brown spots. According to the lawn care professionals at TruGreen,

lawns in regions with hot temperatures and high humidity can be infected with brown patch, a common lawn disease that is caused by fungus, which can produce circular areas of brown, dead grass surrounded by narrow, dark rings. Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences notes that removing dew that collects on grass leaves each morning, which can be accomplished by mowing or dragging a water hose across affected areas, can be an effective way to reduce brown patch. Homeowners without much lawn care experience can consult professional landscapers to address the issue. But those looking to sell their properties should note that buyers often walk the grounds of homes they are considering buying. So addressing any issues on the lawn should be a priority for sellers. 3. Confine dogs to certain areas. Dog owners may want to let their pets roam free in their yards. But homeowners about to put their properties up for sale may want to confine their four-legged friends to certain areas. That’s because dog urine can be high in nitrogen. Nitrogen itself is not harmful to lawns, but in high concentrations it can contribute to yellow or brown spots. Also, highly acidic dog urine may even adversely affect pH levels in the soil. Curb appeal can go a long way toward helping homeowners sell their homes, and a lush lawn can be used to catch the eye of prospective buyers.

The Best Ways To Prevent Car Theft

Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves. • Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes.
