Summer weather has been a little damp this year and there is one critter right at home in “the wet”... slugs. Slugs are basically snails without shells and enjoy munching on a wide variety of garden plants. Who can enjoy strawberries that have been visited by slimy slugs? Slugs will try to eat just about anything including an Eastern Spotted Newt. It may look like forbidden forest love but the slug was not Tasting a newt. kissing the newt but tasting it. The relaxing newt moved away when things started getting beyond the tasting stage. In the past slugs were a difficult garden pest to control. At one time there was only one bait made and the active ingredient was metaldehyde. Metaldehyde was nasty stuff and was for use around ornamental crops but never vegetables, fruits or berries. It is also toxic to animals so I never even considered using it. Metaldehyde has now been removed from the market...thank goodness! There were also a variety of “old school” slug Slugs love strawberries. control techniques. One option was plucking and drowning the slugs in soapy water. You’d need to wear gloves since slug slime isn’t something that you can wash off easily. There was also the dish sunk into the ground and filled with beer method. The idea was that the slugs are attracted to the beer (true) and would drop into it and drown. This never worked well for me and seemed like a terrible waste of beer. Another method involved placing grapefruit rinds upside down in the sluggy area. The slugs are A slimy slug. attracted to the grapefruit rind and you’d find them under there in the morning and then drown them. It worked but you’d need dozens of grapefruit rinds if you wanted to catch enough slugs to make a difference. I never had much success with any of these methods in a year like the one we’re having this year. Finally there’s a slug control that works. The demand for a safe slug control finally led to a natural mineral based slug control that is not only very effective but is totally safe to use in the berry patch and vegetable garden. It is iron phosphate. At Hewitt’s it is called Slug Magic. This stuff works great and is harmless to dogs, cats and all the wildlife except slugs. You just sprinkle it around (according to the instructions on Slug Magic. the package of course) and the slugs actually prefer it to the plants. It works fast too. Sprinkle it on in the evening (slugs feed at night) and by the next night you won’t see slugs around. It may take them a day or two to die but, once they nibble a little Slug Magic, they stop feeding and crawl away to die. I could almost feel sorry for them...nah! Thanks for the read.

Plattsburgh: The Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

In Plattsburgh ghost tours are not reserved for October. Matthew Boire, tour director of The Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company, calls it “haunted history.” He has always been interested in history and the paranormal. “While traveling on family vacations growing up, then later as an adult, I always remember seeing these amazing walking tours everywhere we went,” he said. “Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, St. Augustine, Florida, places with an amazing past, where visitors could be out on a beautiful evening, enjoying the sights and sounds of the community, plus a little spooky fun. I said to myself, ‘Why can’t we do this in Plattsburgh?’” Tours started seven years ago as a special event in October. It was so well received Boire and his business partner, Wendy Cribb, decided to add a summer event the following year so “visitors and guests could get out on those beautiful summer evenings right here in Plattsburgh, and experience the amazing things our area has to offer. It really has just grown in popularity since then,” Boire said. This summer tours are every Friday and Saturday evenings departing at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. with four different tours to choose from. “For the history lover, our tours encompass three National Historic Districts, three different cemeteries, a National Historic Landmark dating from the War of 1812 (Plattsburgh was the site of the largest naval battle of the War), the grounds of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, and many other fascinating (and haunting) locales,” he said. The summer tours are generally led by Boire, an 8th generation North Country native, except in October when other tour guides join the team to help with larger groups. Boire’s family tree is so deeply engrained in the North Country that perhaps his own family members might appear on a tour. “My 5th Great-Grandfather fought in the Battle of Plattsburgh back in 1814, and going back a bit farther: my 10th Great-Grandmother, 13 generations back, was a woman named Susannah North Martin, hung as a witch on July 19th, 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts,” he said. According to Boire, guests are in for a treat and not a trick on his tours. For starters, Boire takes great pride in the authenticity of the tours. Guides wear accurate recreations of the clothing worn by people in the 19th Century. “This provides a unique and interesting focal point for guests, but more importantly it serves to make that connection between the past and the present and provides a sense of drama,” he said. The guides also lead the way using lanterns adding that their flickering glow and their smell only adds to the ambiance of the tour. “Guests are led on a guided journey through the history, mystery, and horror of Plattsburgh’s eerie past...a lantern-lit stroll among the darkened streets, and silent graveyards, where we reveal chilling stories of the macabre and spine-tingling tales of the paranormal,” he said. While Boire can’t guarantee visitors will have a paranormal encounter, he does always encourage enthusiasts to bring along their ghost hunting equipment and for attendees to take as many photos as they’d like. “You never know when or how something may make its presence known. Not all ghosts run around in a white sheet with holes cut out for eyes. Sometimes, their presence seems to be very subtle, an odd smell, a change in temperature, an object strangely out of place,” he said.

When asked about the hauntings people might experience on the tour Boire said the stories reflect the vast history of Plattsburgh, including a 19th Century “mad doctor” or as Boire said, “A real life Victor Frankenstein that once practiced in Plattsburgh.” He mentions the “lady in white” who wanders the Post Cemetery. “One of the areas we visit, the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, was actually named as one of the top ten “Haunted Bases, Boats, and Battlefields” in America by Military Times,” he said. Plattsburgh has local connections to the sinking of the Titanic, Jack the Ripper, and many other chilling ghost stories. “We like to think of our guided walking tours as a fun and unique way to experience the Lake City’s darker side,” he said. The Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company is a combination of historic authenticity and passion, which is evident in the time and effort that is put into creating each tour. “Aside from the authenticity of our tours and events, one thing that really sets us apart from the rest is the depth of the research that goes into them,” Boire said. “All of our events are entirely fact-based and took about 6 months per tour to develop. If you multiply that by 4 tours (with another currently in the works) you can see just how much effort and pride we put into our guest’s experience, and I think that really shows.” B o i r e hopes guests appreciate all the effort that goes into each tour. “We try to immerse the guests into the tales we tell, bringing them to the exact locations where these stories happened, and crafting them in such a way that people feel a connection, they feel like they’ve been transported to another time, or into the footsteps of the people in the story,” Boire said. “There’s very few places in the country that have the depth of history that the Champlain Valley has and we try to harness that power of place. The sense that we’re not alone, there’s this presence of the past, and what it leaves behind, around us all the time.” Last year The Greater Adirondack Ghost & Tour Company was added to the “Haunted History Trail of New York,” a collection of over 65 creepy, spooky, and downright haunted locations, spanning over 400 miles across New York. 3 Ways To Use Your Lawn To Improve Curb Appeal

Returns on home improvement projects vary. In its annual Cost vs. Value Report, Remodeling magazine notes the projects that yield the best returns on investment in a given year. But a host of factors, including the type of market (buyers’ or sellers’) and the region where the home is being sold, ultimately combine to determine if homeowners’ investments in home improvement projects will provide the returns they were hoping for. Though there’s no way of guaranteeing a home improvement project will yield a great return, real estate professionals often cite improving curb appeal as an excellent way to attract prospective buyers and potentially get the asking price or more when selling the home. Improving curb appeal makes even more sense in today’s real estate market, when many people do their own searching via real estate websites such as Trulia or Zillow. When using such sites, buyers will likely be less inclined to click on a listing if exterior photos of the property are not eye-catching. Various projects, including tending to lawns and gardens, can improve curb appeal. An added benefit to focusing on landscaping to improve curb appeal is it promotes spending time outdoors in spring and summer. In addition, many lawn- and garden-related home improvement projects need not require professional expertise. 1. Maintain a lush green lawn. Lawns that fall into disrepair may not give buyers a correct impression about how homeowners maintained their homes. Lawns with multiple dead spots and grass that appears more brown than green may lead many buyers to assume that the home’s interior was equally ill-cared for. Maintaining lush green lawns is not as difficult as it may seem. Applying fertilizer and aerating at the appropriate times of year (this varies by region) can promote strong roots and healthy soil, making it easier for grass to survive harsh conditions like drought. When watering in summer, do so in early morning or evening so as little water is lost to evaporation as possible.

2. Address brown patch.

Email: • Deadline Monday 4pm

Curb appeal can go a long way toward helping homeowners sell their homes, and a lush lawn can be used to catch the eye of prospective buyers.

Classified Ads With Us! CALL 454-5502 or 454-5503 (Fax 454-5542)

Even well-maintained lawns can fall victims to brown spots. According to the lawn care professionals at TruGreen, lawns in regions with hot temperatures and high humidity can be infected with brown patch, a common lawn disease that is caused by fungus, which can produce circular areas of brown, dead grass surrounded by narrow, dark rings. Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences notes that removing dew that collects on grass leaves each morning, which can be accomplished by mowing or dragging a water hose across affected areas, can be an effective way to reduce brown patch. Homeowners without much lawn care experience can consult professional landscapers to address the issue. But those looking to sell their properties should note that buyers often walk the grounds of homes they are considering buying. So addressing any issues on the lawn should be a priority for sellers. 3. Confine dogs to certain areas. Dog owners may want to let their pets roam free in their yards. But homeowners about to put their properties up for sale may want to confine their four-legged friends to certain areas. That’s because dog urine can be high in nitrogen. Nitrogen itself is not harmful to lawns, but in high concentrations it can contribute to yellow or brown spots. Also, highly acidic dog urine may even adversely affect pH levels in the soil.

The Best Ways To Prevent Car Theft The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. And it’s not just the expensive models that are targets of thieves. Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves. • Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes. • Keep valuables hidden. Don’t leave purchases, cell phones, money (even loose change), expensive sunglasses, or electronics within sight in the vehicle. • Exercise caution with spare keys. Do not hide a spare key under the vehicle or in an obvious spot. Car thieves are wise to these tactics. Also, if you’ve lent a spare key to someone, ask for it back promptly.

• Invest in a car alarm. Car alarms can deter thieves because they draw attention to the vehicle. Car alarms that also prevent the vehicle from being started or driven away (kill switch) can be helpful.

• Use various locks. Manufacturers make steering wheel locks and brake locks that render cars undrivable unless they are removed. • Be visible when parking. Choose highly visible parking spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near security cameras and in well-lit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. • Don’t leave it running. According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half

of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions — such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the urge to “warm up” the vehicle by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition. • Get VIN etching. Etching the VIN on windows makes it more expensive for car thieves to resell a vehicle or its parts without having to make replacements.

• Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen, GPS tracking devices can help cops recover the vehicle more rapidly.

Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.
