All spring long we’ve had to mow our lawns at least once a week to keep up with its rapid growth. Like most of you, I’ve been mowing it low to try and gain some time between mowing. When the heat and dryness of summer arrive, we need to adjust our attitude and our mowing height. To help your lawn survive dry summer weather let it get taller… as tall as your lawn mower will adjust…4” to 5”. If you continue with the low mow, the sun Stop the low mow during hot summer will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill weather. the roots of your grass. A lawn left long shades the soil. You may like the look of a shorter lawn, but if the soil temperature goes above 85° to 90° for three consecutive days, the root system dies. Once that happens, you’re looking at a lot of grass seed and a lot of watering in late summer and early fall to repair the lawn There comes a time when you just must water. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to remain healthy, it needs an inch of water Raise your mower blade to its highest setting. a week. What you need to know, though, is that the lawn needs that inch of water all at once to get any real benefit from it. Water your lawn heavily then not at all for a week. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. If you have watering restrictions that only allow you to water every other day for two An inch of water once a week. hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with underground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”. Water at this depth in the soil will not evaporate quickly, and it’s where the roots of the grass are located so it can be absorbed. Quickly spraying the lawn might perk it up briefly but most of that moisture is lost to evaporation and can never penetrate deep into the soil to get to the roots. At this point folks will ask, “How long do I need to leave the sprinkler on to put on an inch of water?” Since we all have different lawn sprinklers and water pressure, I can’t answer that question. This is something we must all determine on our own. You simply need to take a small, empty tuna fish can and place it in the area you’re watering. Don’t shut it off until it is full. Make a mental note of how long it took, and you’ll always know how long your setup takes to put out an inch of water. That’s it. Water deeply then take a break for a week. Thanks for the read.

Saratoga Bridges’ Annual Gala is July 21 by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Since the early 1950s Saratoga Bridges, formerly known as the Saratoga County ARC until 2006, has been committed to providing the highest quality services to people with disabilities and their families. Saratoga Bridges currently serves over 830 individuals and families in Saratoga County. The dedicated staff and volunteers focus on the individual, helping them to live full, active lives while allowing them to achieve their personal goals. On July 21, Saratoga Bridges will host its annual gala and largest fundraising event of the year: The White Party. Last year’s event raised more than $113,000 for the Saratoga Bridges Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to ensure Saratoga Bridges has a visible, positive reputation that attracts public support in the community while raising funds to cover the costs of programs and services that are not sufficiently supported by public agencies. “Saratoga Bridges is committed to advocacy for people with disabilities by providing resources that enable them to live enriching lives in the communities where they are valued for their abilities and contributions,” said Valerie Muratori, Executive Director of Saratoga Bridges. “Saratoga Bridges has been providing the highest level of programs to people with disabilities and their families for more than 60 years. We are proud and dedicated to work together with them to ensure that they are able to work, volunteer and socialize in the community while pursuing the quality of life each person values. For us, every day is full of possibilities!” she said. Saratoga Bridges’ gala Co-Chairs, Christianne Smith Potts and Sarah Samascott, and their committee members invite everyone to attend this year’s gala at the Saratoga National Golf Club. Samascott promises the gala to be a fun night. “There is champagne and a white carpet. You will feel like a celebrity for the evening. Everyone is dressed up, there is great music for dancing and delicious food to eat,” she said. “It is a really fun night and the best part is that it is all for a great cause - helping to raise money so that Saratoga Bridges may continue to serve people and families that need it.” Samascott confirmed Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Riggi will be honored at the gala as the honorary chairs. However, the gratitude of Saratoga Bridges extends to Turbine Services, Ltd. and the entire Riggi Family, as well as, Ketel One Vodka for their support as Presenting Sponsors for The White Party. “We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors, especially to our honorary chairs,” she said. Samascott is quick to acknowledge the many local businesses that support the gala through sponsorship and donations. “So many businesses around Saratoga County are making a difference for the families of Saratoga Bridges by supporting the White Party,” she said. “This is an event that the community gets behind.” Benita Zahn, of News Channel 13, will emcee the event. One of this year’s signature auction prizes is a new deck from Curtis Lumber and Homes by Malta Development and a celebration deck party for 6 from Hattie’s Restaurant. Doug Ford, VP of Sales and Purchasing at Curtis Lumber, was approached last year by Malta Development regarding the idea of partnering up on a donation for the annual Saratoga Bridges White Party fundraiser. “Malta Development have been great customers for many years and share the same interest in supporting the not-for-profits within our

communities as does Curtis Lumber, Inc.” he said. “So it was an easy decision to combine our resources to provide a signature item that showcased their craftmanship along with our quality products.” The custom deck, including materials and labor, is valued at about $5,000. After the success of last year’s deck, Ford was happy to partner with Malta Development again this year. “The winner can work with the talented designers at Curtis Lumber to design a deck and the craftsmen at Malta Development will then construct the dream deck at their home,” he said. Par tygoers at this year’s gala will enjoy delicious food from Mazzone Catering and complimentary cocktails courtesy of Ketel One Vodka. The event will also feature live and silent auctions, artwork from our talented C r e a t i v e Endeavors Artists, festive décor by Fine Affairs and Rain or Shine Tent Company, entertainment from GRAVITY and a cigar roller from James & Sons Tobacconists. Heather Bohm-Tallman Photography will, once again, capture many fun moments at the event. The evening will also feature fireworks courtesy of Fireworks by Santore. Samascott attended her first White Party a few years ago and it left a lasting impression on her. “Saratoga in the summer is filled with parties and events all supporting great causes,” she said. “The White Party is on point. It is supporting a great cause and it is a really fun evening.” After attending her first White Party she knew she wanted to volunteer for Saratoga Bridges in some capacity and support the organization’s mission. “I wanted to be a part of it,” she said. “There is such a wonderful partnership between Saratoga Bridges and the community.” Ford attended his first White Party in 2017. He was blown away after meeting staff and clients of Saratoga Bridges. “The care and resources they provide to people with disabilities to enrich their lives is overwhelming. I will never miss this event again and look forward to working with Wayne and Sarah Samascott (Malta Development) on future opportunities to support this fundraiser.” Reservations by June 30: $175; $125 (Under 35) – Price increases by $25 after June 30 For more information please visit the gala’s website: http:// Photos courtesy of Heather Bohm-Tallman Photography.

Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

3 Ways To Use Your Lawn To Improve Curb Appeal

Page 11

Moving/Storage • Renovations • Remodeling • De-cluttering

Returns on home improve★ ★ ment projects vary. In its 4 SIZES TO annual Cost vs. Value Re★ CHOOSE FROM port, Remodeling magazine ★ notes the projects that yield the best returns on invest1-877-722-5640 ment in a given year. But a host of factors, including the type of market (buyers’ or sellers’) and the region where the home is being sold, ultimately combine to determine if homeowners’ investments in home improvement projects will provide the returns they were hoping for.

We Bring Storage To You Low Monthly Rate Keep With You Or Store With Us Residential & Commercial

Though there’s no way of guaranteeing a home improvement project will yield a great return, real estate professionals often cite improving curb appeal as an excellent way to attract prospective buyers and potentially get the asking price or more when selling the home. Improving curb appeal makes even more sense in today’s real estate market, when many people do their own searching via real estate websites such as Trulia or Zillow. When using such sites, buyers will likely be less inclined to click on a listing if exterior photos of the property are not eye-catching. Various projects, including tending to lawns and gardens, can improve curb appeal. An added benefit to focusing on landscaping to improve curb appeal is it promotes spending time outdoors in spring and summer. In addition, many lawn- and garden-related home improvement projects need not require professional expertise. 1. Maintain a lush green lawn. Lawns that fall into disrepair may not give buyers a correct impression about how homeowners maintained their homes. Lawns with multiple dead spots and grass that appears more brown than green may lead many buyers to assume that the home’s interior was equally ill-cared for. Maintaining lush green lawns is not as difficult as it may seem. Applying fertilizer and aerating at the appropriate times of year (this varies by region) can promote strong roots and healthy soil, making it easier for grass to survive harsh conditions like drought. When watering in summer, do so in early morning or evening so as little water is lost to evaporation as possible. 2. Address brown patch. Even well-maintained lawns can fall victims to brown spots. According to the lawn care professionals at TruGreen, lawns in regions with hot temperatures and high humidity can be infected with brown patch, a common lawn disease that is caused by fungus, which can produce circular areas of brown, dead grass surrounded by narrow, dark rings. Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences notes that removing dew that collects on grass leaves each morning, which can be accomplished by mowing or dragging a water hose across affected areas, can be an effective way to reduce brown patch. Homeowners without much lawn care experience can consult professional landscapers to address the issue. But those looking to sell their properties should note that buyers often walk the grounds of homes they are considering buying. So addressing any issues on the lawn should be a priority for sellers. 3. Confine dogs to certain areas. Dog owners may want to let their pets roam free in their yards. But homeowners about to put their properties up for sale may want to confine their four-legged friends to certain areas. That’s because dog urine can be high in nitrogen. Nitrogen itself is not harmful to lawns, but in high concentrations it can contribute to yellow or brown spots. Also, highly acidic dog urine may even adversely affect pH levels in the soil. Curb appeal can go a long way toward helping homeowners sell their homes, and a lush lawn can be used to catch the eye of prospective buyers.

The Best Ways To Prevent Car Theft

• Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes.

June 14, 2018

• Be visible when parking. Choose highly visible parking spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near security cameras and in well-lit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. • Don’t leave it running.

According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions — such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the urge to “warm up” the vehicle by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition. • Get VIN etching. Etching the VIN on windows makes it more expensive for car thieves to resell a vehicle or its parts without having to

make replacements.

more rapidly.

• Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen, GPS tracking devices can help cops recover the vehicle

Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.
