Books for Troops Clarification Needed

CAPITAL DISTRICT - In several articles that the Pennysaver has so diligently printed for us concerning the collection of books, there seems to be a huge misunderstanding of donating Hard-Covered books. The article clearly states that THE ONLY BOOKS THAT WE WILL ACCEPT IN HARD-COVER ARE BOOKS DEALING WITH HISTORY BECAUSE WE FIND HISTORY BOOKS ARE OFTEN HARD TO FIND IN SOFT-COVER. While we have received a great number of great history books in both soft and hard-covers, we have also been inundated with hundreds of hard-covered books and best-sellers that are not history and that are readily available in paperback. We don’t want them, the troops don’t want them. If you do donate hard-covered history books, do not donate coffee-table size books. They are a fortune to mail and the troops have limited space. With all other book donations, as in the past, we only accept soft-covered books in excellent condition. Please NO romances at all. We appreciate your generosity, but please consider the considerable extra energy and time these books entail which instead could be spent sending books that the troops want. Please be thoughtful before you donate. Thank you for those who make our jobs so much easier by donating only what we ask for. You are truly offering a gift of “escape. Ellen Keegan, Director.

EASY EDGING AND MULCHING Step 1 - Outlining the new bed.

Step 2 - Cutting the edge.

Step 3 - All ready to get covered.

Step 4 - Cardboard first to cover the weeds.

Step 5 - Add the mulch.

Step 6 - Enjoy a weed free bed.

Over the years I’ve shared my method of using cardboard under mulch for weed control. Every year people will come up and thank me for saving them so much time once they tried it. Here it is, easy edging and mulching; a quick way to conquer weeds for great looking beds. I have an area that is difficult to mow around so I decided to turn it into a mulched bed to make mowing easier. I used the hose to outline the edge I want. It will be a nice rounded bed that will be easy to mow around. Then I finish edging the new bed. I use a straight bladed shovel for a nice neat edge. Simply slice into the grass at the edge of the bed at a steep angle 4” deep. Grass can’t cross that barrier of air so it won’t make it into the bed on the other side of the trench. I just toss the clumps I dig out into the bed...why waste good soil I say. “But what about all the grass and weeds in the bed...and all the clumps of grass you tossed in?” you’re asking. I suppose that I could spend a couple of hours digging out all the grass and weeds, but I have a much quicker and easier way to deal with that...cardboard! A layer of cardboard will smother the grass and it will die. All the clumps of sod that I tossed in will compost into the soil. I’m always on the prowl for large pieces of cardboard. Here’s the bed all covered with cardboard. I used a razor knife to slice the cardboard along the edge of the bed. Make sure that the cardboard overlaps heavily so the grass and weeds can’t get through...8” of overlap will stop them. I also used the razor knife to cut the cardboard so it fits around the trunks of the pines and hydrangea. Now all that’s left is putting mulch on the cardboard. This is the fun part, and it goes down quickly. I put a 4” to 5” layer of cedar mulch down. There are many types of mulch, but I like cedar because it’s cheap and smells nice too. Now the mulch is down, the area looks great and mowing will be simple. It looks a little sparse now but more plants can be added to the bed easily. Just brush the mulch aside, cut a hole in the cardboard and plant....easy peasy and it looks so much better now. In all, this took less than an hour, and I used 7 bags of cedar mulch. In the vegetable garden, I use the same method except that I’ll use straw on top of the cardboard instead of cedar mulch. During a wet year like this one, I’ll wait until later in the season to cover the soil to give it a chance to dry out and warm up. Seed beds and other areas can’t get covered and still need to be weeded but at least the aisles remain weed free. By fall earthworms will have eaten most of the cardboard and any that is left can be turned into the soil along with the straw adding organic matter and feeding the soil. Thanks for the read.

Genealogy And Local History

SCHUYLERVILLE - Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, May 19th, at 1 pm at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. Lauren Roberts, Saratoga County Historian, will introduce a viewing of the movie “Harnessing Nature, Building the Great Sacandaga.” It is the unusual story of how, in the 1920s, Hadley homes and businesses were deliberately destroyed and whole cemeteries were moved to enable the flooding of the Sacandaga River Valley. The documentary is a collaborative effort involving County Historian Lauren Roberts, Queensbury filmmaker Peter Pepe, Saratoga County Director of Planning Jason Kemper, and area residents and historians. Discussion will follow the showing. Public is welcome. For information call 518-587-2978.

The Capital District’s Best Kept Secret: Opera Saratoga by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Opera Saratoga delights audiences every summer with beautiful music and dazzling sets. An internationally recognized opera festival, Opera Saratoga has been delighting audiences since July 5, 1962 when it first performed at the Diamond Point Theater in Lake George as the Lake George Opera. Larry Edelson, the artistic and general director of Opera Saratoga since July 2014, hopes Capital District residents know there is world class opera in their backyard. “Opera Saratoga is a real treasure,” he says. Opera Saratoga kicks off its summer festival opera performances on June 29, 2018 at the intimate Spa Little Theater nestled within the Saratoga Spa State Park. Edelson promises that each of the festival’s shows will be exciting for audiences. “Each performance is an up close and personal experience with opera,” he said. This season, each opera is sung in English – the productions will have something for everyone. “The Merry Widow” is one of the most popular operettas in the world. Despite its popularity, Opera Saratoga hasn’t performed it in more than 30 years. The operetta is a beautiful marriage of comedy and dancing. “This is a really fun show and is perfect for families and first time opera-goers,” Edelson said. “Rocking Horse Winner” and “Vinkensport” (The Finch Opera) is advertised as being a double bill. “Rocking Horse Winner” will have its American premiere at the summer festival. It is also Opera Saratoga’s first horseracing themed opera. “Opera Saratoga calls Saratoga home and having an opera with horseracing theme makes perfect sense,” Edelson said. “The opera is all about luck and chance.” The second half of the performance will be the world premiere of “Vinkensport.” According to Edelson, “Vinkesport” combats the elitist connotation of opera, especially for first-time audience members. The opera explores the nature of competition and the need to win through the frame of an obscure Flemish folk sport, Finch-Sitting. “How far will someone go to win a competition? This is a piece that will really resonate with audiences,” he said. “It will also entertain them!”

Annual Steak Roast

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Sunday, June 10th. 3pm to 6pm. Menu of Steak cooked to order, salad, vegetables, dessert & beverage. $20.00 Adult - $8.00 Child. The Rising Sun Lodge #103 Free & Accepted Masons at 687 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

Almost 70 years ago, “The Consul” premiered on Broadway to rave reviews and won both the Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. It is a riveting opera that still delivers a punch as powerful and timely as its subject matter: the struggle for freedom against oppression, and the maddening nature of unrelenting bureaucracy. “It is a very topical performance that speak to our humanity,” Edelson said. “It shines light on the people who are suffering, including immigrants and refugees, and their challenges.” Edelson believes audiences will be moved by this opera not only because of its beautiful music but because the story is so haunting. In addition to the opera productions, Opera Saratoga also offers a robust local concert series during the Summer Festival. “It is important for us to be connected to the community we serve,” Edelson said. The Stars of Tomorrow, hosted by Skidmore College on May 26 at 7:30 p.m., is a free show kicking off the summer season. The concert will feature 24 singers from around the country who have been selected from almost 1,000 applicants to be members of Opera Saratoga’s prestigious Young Artist Program.  Presented in partnership with the Mansion Inn in Rock City Falls, on June 10 Opera Saratoga will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial birthday in two concerts, at 2pm and 7:30pm. Members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program will celebrate the legacy of one of America’s most beloved composers, who brought us masterpieces including “West Side Story,” “Candide,” and “Wonderful Town.” General admission is $60 per ticket. Seating is cabaret style tables, and is strictly limited for these two concerts. Tapas and drinks, inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s theatrical works and specially concocted by The Mansion Inn’s Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Rick Bieber, will be available for purchase.  On June 17 at 7 p.m., join Opera Saratoga at the Massry Center for the Arts at College of St. Rose in Albany for a free concert titled Refugee Voices. Building on themes explored in this summer’s production of “The Consul,” Opera Saratoga presents a special concert featuring music by refugee composers - artists who had to flee from their home countries due to religious or political persecution. Opera and song by Gaetano Donizetti, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Darius Milhaud, Paul Hindemith, Erich Koorngold, Irving Berlin, Béla Bartók, and Kurt Weill will be highlighted during this free event. The finale of the summer concert series, Vienna, City of My Dreams, happens on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at The Spa Little Theater. Tickets range from $40 to $80 as members of Opera Saratoga’s acclaimed Young Artist Program will be featured in this evening of Viennese operetta favorites, including arias and ensembles by Oscar Strauss, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Franz von Suppé, Leo Fall and more. Edelson hopes Capital District residents will give opera a try, and experience one of the many Opera Saratoga events happening this summer. “There are as many different kinds of opera as there are movies – and we have something for everyone this summer,” Edelson said. He encourages newcomers to opera to choose the show with the story that sounds the most interesting to them. “Operas are really just stories told through song – great stories told through music, theater, dance and the wonderful visuals. It’s all encompassing! We have performers coming to Saratoga from around the world. The result is magical - and everyone can find a story in opera that will appeal to them!” For more information about the upcoming Opera Saratoga events please visit its website: http://www.operasaratoga.org/ Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries.

See and be seen Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers.

displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains.

Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most.

Exercise caution with puddles and running water It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways.

Slow down and give other motorists space S l ow i n g down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1-12inch of water on the road, tires have to

• Find your muse. The first step to creating a gallery wall is to choose a theme. If floral prints are your thing or you love abstract art, build your gallery around these elements. You can even use color or frame style as the coordinating factor. • Take your time. Some people rush into creating gallery walls, and that can be a mistake. Spend time picking out pieces and trying different combinations before you take out the hammer and hardware. The mix should be captivating and look like it was a curated collection. Some pieces can be highend, while others may be picked up at flea markets or even be your own artwork or photography. • Experiment with dimensions and levels. Gallery walls need not be restricted to flat photos on a wall. Texture and depth can be used in wall designs. Intersperse shelving, sconces, wooden letters, clocks, and more to make the gallery even more eclectic. Feel free to build the gallery around items that are in the house, such as windows or televisions. This can help electronics blend into the design. • Establish your focal point. Pottery Barn suggests making the center of the dis-

play at eye level, roughly 66 inches off the ground. Then build the gallery out from around that focal point. There are many patterns that can be built into the gallery, from “spiral” to “centered” to “reflection” designs. • Create a template. Lay the gallery design on the floor and cut newspapers or other paper to the size of each piece. Use masking tape to position these guides on the wall, trying a few arrangements until you are happy with the finished product. Then replace the paper with the artwork. • Hang items with precision. Don’t skimp on technique. Use a ruler, level and the right tools. This ensures pieces are straight and in line with others. Gone are the days when large pieces of artwork fill empty walls. Gallery designs add statements and can balance rooms in creative ways.

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com How To Clear A Clogged Drain Did You Know? One oft-shared piece of pruning advice is that covering a newly pruned area with tar, paint or varnish can inhibit the fungal organisms that will get into the new cut, leading to a diseased tree, shrub or plant. This myth has been circulating for some time, according to the experts at Fine Gardening. Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to prevent microscopic organisms from infiltrating a new cut. The application of a wound dressing may even contribute to faster decay of heartwood. That’s because the tar or paint will keep moisture in the new cut, which helps fungus and other microorganisms grow. Instead of dressing wounds, read up on proper ways to prune and let plants employ their own natural defenses to heal and prevent decay.

Decorating Small Spaces Warm weather often inspires renewed vigor in decorating or organizing a home. People who live in apartments, small homes or condos or those who have embraced the “tiny house” movement must rely on clever decorating to maximize their spaces. Here are some ideas when space is at a premium. • Go vertical. Utilize vertical space, such as lights hung on a wall beside a bed instead of lamps on a nightstand or bookshelves and other shelving to keep items off of the floor. • Bench seating: Benches can provide more seating when entertaining guests and also can be moved to the living room or elsewhere as needed. Place a small bench in a foyer and put some wicker bins beneath for storage. • Utilize natural light. Rooms that have ample light can seem more spacious. Pull up blinds (or skip them if privacy isn’t an issue) and use the sunshine to help spaces appear more airy.

Home plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as it should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water in a snap. But when a clog is present in a system, water can quickly back up. There are various techniques to clear clogged drains. Minor clogs may be cleared without the help of a plumber or even any tools. More significant blockages will require more elbow grease. The first step to clearing a clog is to locate the problem. Drainage issues that affect a particular sink or toilet may be isolated to that fixture. Clogs that are present throughout the house may be indicative of a larger problem in the plumbing that is directing waste away from the house and into the sewer system. Sometimes a clog can be freed by pouring boiling hot water or a combination of baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If that doesn’t help, move on to a plunger, advise the experts at This Old House. By creating pressure within the pipes, a plunger can dislodge whatever is causing the backup. If the clog seems to be further down the drain, hair or grime may have become trapped. An auger, often referred to as a “plumber’s snake,” can be inserted COMMERCIAL into the drain to remove the RESIDENTIAL grime and free up the water • Driveways Resurfaced pregent-paving.com Parking Lots/Striping • flow. Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

spect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

• Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely in-

• Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Because water plays such a crucial role in the mosquito breeding process, it’s necessary that all potential water sources in a yard be removed. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed.

ports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Homeowners can employ several measures to prevent mosquitoes from invading their backyards this spring and summer. • Remove standing water. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so homeowners must be diligent in their efforts to remove standing water around their properties. Mosquitoes can breed in bird baths, pets’ water bowls and empty plant pots that collect rain water. Routinely tipping these items S and refilling them with fresh water can prevent mosquito

Mosquitoes are unwelcome guests come spring and summer. But homeowners can take steps to increase the likelihood that their properties stay mosquito-free.

Saratoga Students Selected T Participate In First Youth Leadership Experience At The 2018 Special Olympics Usa Games

May 17, 2018

Trinity Hogben, grade 10, and Tiffany Weiler, grade 12, were selected to be part of the Special Olympics New York delegation and to attend the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games this summer in Seattle, Washington, participating in the first ever Youth Leadership Experience. The Youth Leadership Experience will give students with and without intellectual disabilities a chance to serve a meaningful role in their state’s delegation, while also learning and experiencing what it takes to put on a large scale event and all of the key roles played by volunteers. “Special Olympics New York is excited to have Trinity and Tiffany representing us and all of the youth leaders involved in our Unified Champion Schools program. They are great examples of what it means to live unified,” according to Nathan Johnson, Director of Unified Sports, Special Olympics New York. Each day, Youth Leadership Experience participants will have a different service learning experiences including volunteering in the Fan Zone, reporting through social media from the competitions, leading Special Olympics Youth Athletes activities, shadowing key volunteers or delegation staff and learning more about interscholastic and collegiate Unified Sports. In addition, Youth Leadership Experience participants will take part in all ceremonial events with their state delegation, Team New York! Trinity and Tiffany will be joined by Colleen Belanger, Saratoga Springs High School Physical Education teacher as part of the 80 person New York delegation.

WSWHE BOCES 8 CTE Students are New York State Skills USA Champions

Among the thousands of students who took to the state fairgrounds, eight CTE students returned home with the title of New York State Champion in their respective fields: Calvin Stead of Saratoga Springs won first place in Basic Automotive Vehicle Maintenance Hunter Evans of Saratoga Springs won first place in Carpenter’s Assistant Karry Ziegler of Hadley-Luzerne and her model Hannah Hansen of Cambridge won first place in the Esthetics competition. Diahjanae Walker of Hartford won first place in Job Skill Demonstration Open by making an ice sphere. She explained to the judges how it takes each component of STEM to make the process possible. Jeremy DeLore of Queensbury, Nicholas Moore and Grady Smith of Hudson Students from the F. Donald Myers Education Center who earned first, second and Falls and Lucas Thayer of third places jump for joy - Hunter Evans, Xavier Jones, Calvin Stead, Travis Neahr, South Glens Falls took first Katelyn Woodruff, Vanessa Hayes, Eryn Cardinale, Karry Ziegler, Hannah Hansen place in the Team Works competition where they had to work as a team to build a structure over three days of competition. Kayla Harrington of Queensbury was elected State Parliamentarian. Jarod Quackenbush of South Glens Falls represented Area III as Vice President. Eight students earned second and third place at the state competition. The Basic Automotive Vehicle Maintenance and Carpenter’s Assistant competitions are not offered at the national level. All other first place winners are eligible to represent the F. Donald Myers Education Center and the Southern Adirondack Education Center at the 54th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ky., June 25-28. The state officers are required to attend. The National Leadership and Skills Conference showcases career and technical education students. More than 16,000 people — including students, teachers and business partners — are expected to participate in the weeklong event. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It has an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high performance workers in public Career and Technical Education programs. SkillsUSA provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. It emphasizes total quality at work – high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free-enterprise system and involvement in community service. Every year, Career and Tech Ed students compete in local SkillsUSA competitions at the F. Donald Myers and Southern Adirondack Education Centers in order to earn the chance to compete at the SkillsUSA Regional, New York State, and National competitions. WSWHE BOCES is one of the top New York schools in terms of medal counts at the SkillsUSA State Championships. Each competition measures a student’s hands-on skills in his or her chosen field of study including nursing, baking, welding, auto repair, and carpentry as well as interviewing for jobs and public speaking. Students are given an assignment that must be completed within a set time frame. Business and industry leaders judge the competitions. Students prepare for the competition for months, often staying after school to be coached by their teachers, and the prizes are well worth the effort. Some students receive scholarships and awards as a result of their exceptional performance at a competition. SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization, is devoted to rewarding students for excellence, for involving industry in directly evaluating student performance, and for keeping career training relevant to employers’ needs.

Make Moving Much Easier

It should come as no surprise that spring kicks off one of the busiest times of year in the housing market. Warm weather makes it more comfortable to see and display homes, leading to more listings and open houses.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average person in the United States changes residences more than 11 times in his or her lifetime. With each move, the process of moving may become more familiar. But even the most practiced nomad can find moving to be an overwhelming experience.

moving much easier.

Research areas carefully Buyers are advised to do their research when seeking new towns or cities to call home. There are many factors to consider, including school district ratings, proximity to shopping, distance from work/commute times, availability of transportation, climate, and crime ratings.

OPEN HOUSE

Before falling in love with a particular home, potential buyers can visit the area in which the home is located during a typical weekday to get a feel for the atmosphere. Check out shopping centers, observe the residents and drive by the schools and businesses. This can help paint an accurate picture that may or may not differ from that depicted in the real estate listing.

Saturday 5/19, 10am-2pm. For sale by owner. Beautiful & secluded ranch home. 3 BR, 1.5 ba. office, lg LR, hardwood flrs, full basement, detached 2 car garage, sits on 13.76 park like ac. 2870 US 20, Nassau 12123. $279,999

Stack the deck Working with qualified professionals who have gone through the moving process before can make for easier work for buyers and sellers. Ask for recommendations regarding real estate companies, real estate attorneys, home inspectors, insurance agents, and all of the other people who will assist with buying, selling and moving. Carefully vet these professionals, relying on thirdparty reviews as well as any information provided by the Better Business Bureau.

Those on the cusp of moving and nervous about packing up and leaving can employ a few tricks to make Open Sundays 11-1 or by appointment. Totally remodeled two bedroom home. Open floor plan with central air. Offered fully furnished with all appliances included. Custom kitchen with solid surface counters and integrated sink. Maple laminate and tile flooring. Quiet community, one mile south of the Latham circle. Home can be moved. (518) 331-8302.

Secure temporary storage It can help to put some belongings into a storage center prior to moving, and then gradually take items from the storage unit to your new home. This will free up space to make repairs to your new home and give you time to figure out decorating schemes while ensuring clutter won’t get in the way of renovation projects. New homeowners also can take their time sorting through boxes and getting rid of items they may not need in their new homes. Get estimates and verify licensing The BBB advises consumers to verify all licensing for movers. Solicit at least three in-home estimates and get those figures in writing.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE

Confirm insurance coverage for the company chosen, and be sure to have all agreed upon information spelled out explicitly in a written contract. Red flags to consider include movers who don’t make on-site inspections for estimates and those who demand payment in advance before the move. Have a first-week survival kit New homeowners can pick up takeout restaurant menus and premade grocery store meals. In addition, stock up on staples such as paper plates, toilet tissue, light bulbs, and cleaning supplies in advance of the move so you won’t have to unpack everything at mealtime or when you want to clean after arriving at your new home.

Did You Know? According to a survey from AutoList.com, when buying vehicles, millennials are more likely to consider the environmental impacts of a car than those who belong to Generation X. The survey found Gen Xers prioritize price, reliability and brand when purchasing a car. While millennials may place significant emphasis on vehicles’ environmental impact, they do not intend to keep their vehicles for very long, as nearly half of millennial survey respondents acknowledged they plan to keep their cars for five years or less. Meanwhile, among the survey respondents who belonged to Generation X, one-third planned to their cars for 10 years

or longer. The AutoList survey also found differences between the cars millennials prefer compared to their Generation X counterparts. Perhaps not surprisingly, millennials, many of whom are just beginning their professional lives, prefer small, inexpensive vehicles, while members of Generation X, who are no doubt more established professionally and more financially secure as a result, prefer slightly more expensive vehicles. But the differences may not be that significant, as the survey found that millennials like the Honda Civic, while Generation X members prefer the Honda Accord.
