Running a retail business is a lot like doing improv. Just ask Ron DeLucia, owner of Delucia’s Grocery and Deli. Better yet, stop in and he’ll demonstrate. DeLucia is an entertaining entrepreneur. Or is it an entrepreneurial entertainer? Whatever the case, DeLucia can do it all with a straight face (if he chooses). And, unless you’re one of his many regular customers, ordering one of his luncheon daily specials you may have trouble figuring out exactly when he’s serious and when he’s pulling your leg. Every once in a while, though, a small impish grin creeps into the corners of his mouth ‌ then it’s a dead giveaway. In the meantime he’s bound to keep you guessing. And that’’s just one small part of the schtick that keeps you coming back for some of the many grocery items. “If you think about it, you’re really on stage when you’re in the store,â€? DeLucia observed. I developed my sense of humor growing up in this store. You have to think on your feet in this business, just as you do with improv.â€? DeLucia took over the family business in 1982 after finding success in theatre and improv in Los Angeles. DeLucia’s charted path changed once again when he returned to the East Coast to help with the business. “I planned to be here for three years,â€? he said. “That was 18 years ago.â€? Perhaps it was a familial destiny. The business was first started by DeLucia’s grandparents in Mechanicville in the early 1930’s. “They were basically fruit peddlers,â€? DeLucia said. “They lost the business during the Depression; later, they built a small place on Saratoga Lake. in 1939, they bought the Route 9 building where DeLucia’s Grocery and Deli is now located.â€? DeLucia’s parents took over in the 40’s. After four decades, DeLucia’s mother sublet the store to other operators. “My father passed away in 1967 and it was tough for her to run the store by herself all those years,â€? DeLucia explained. DeLucia decided to return to the business when he realized the person operating the store wasn’t carrying on the tradition that the DeLucia family had worked so hard to build – namely, impeccable, friendly, personalized customer service. “We won’t sell an empty box. We sell a feeling. I call it ‘customer lavishment’,â€? DeLucia said. “The business is still the core of what it was when my grandparents started it; it is still about people.â€? It’s still about giving service that’s from a bygone era. how many times can you go into a store today and have the clerk (or owner, for that matter) call you by name? It’s the norm after you’ve been in DeLucia’s a few times. You don’t usually have to pay more than one visit, though, to receive the DeLucia ribbing, jesting and subtle, straight-faced joking. It’s the little extra you get when you stop by for grocery items, lunch, incredible large subs have 1 lb. of meat and sandwiches made with Boarshead meats, Land of Lake cheese, lottery tickets or something from the vast selection of soda, beer and other thirst quenchers. “My philosophy is about living a life of expectancy and gratitude. I expect good in my life and I am grateful for it. I expect my customers to be a lot of fun and to have a lot of fun. They are and they do ‌ and I’m very grateful for that,â€? DeLucia said. The entrepreneur built on this foundation of service. “I feel that DeLucia’s is really a reflection of me. I try to loook at how I can make myself better and how I can make the business better. It’s about seeing the business as it is and as it will be – that’s called double vision,â€? DeLucia explained with a smile. “I want to be in a position to make changes before things actually need to be changed – paint before you need to paint.â€? “You only regret the things you don’t do,â€? DeLucia said. Those who have had the pleasure of interacting with DeLucia can only hope he keeps on “doing. “
