Paving Stones Versus Concrete Homeowners have a variety of needs around the landscape that call for pavers or concrete, including driveways, patios and walkways. Deciding on a material means assessing needs and desired features as well as the cost of the project. In general, pavers are interlocking tiles of stone, brick or molded concrete. Concrete is poured in large, solid blocks with flexible spacers to allow for contraction and expansion depending on the weather.

Pavers Pavers allow flexibility in color and pattern. They can also be dug up and moved around at a later time. Different types of blocks can be interwoven to create a unique pattern. Because pavers are individual pieces, homeowners may find that installation is a do-ityourself project.

There are many different price ranges for pavers, depending on the size and material. Some range from a few dollars a block to much more than that. Many home-improvement stores sell Paving stones are one option for homeowners looking to transan array of pavers, or homeowners can form areas of their landscapes. order from a specialty retailer.

Pavers are often individually set with sand and leveling gravel. This means that over time they can settle and become uneven. Furthermore, because there is only sand in between, weeds may grow through the pavers over time, requiring added maintenance. Concrete

Poured concrete is a permanent addition to the landscape. It cannot be poured and then reconfigured without major demolition.

RETAINING WALLS ~ PLANTERS ~ PAVER BRICK PATIOS

Also, because concrete requires precision and mastery, it is not something easily done by a do-ityourselfer. This means that a hired mason will have to be called to pour concrete features. This may make concrete a more expensive purchase than individual pavers.

Concrete is a continuous, poured substance. This means that weeds will not grow through so there is less maintenance involved. But it's important to know that even concrete that has been properly laid may shift or crack over time from the settling of the ground.

Thanks to innovations in concrete, homeowners who like the look of pavers without the work can investigate stamped concrete options, where a pattern is embossed into the concrete before it dries. Colors, stains and etching procedures are also available.

There are a few other distinctions between these two materials that may also influence a homeowner's decision. Pavers provide immediate gratification in that they can be enjoyed shortly after installation. Concrete, on the other hand, will require days to dry and cure.

Some town codes require a permit for pouring concrete because it is a permanent change to the home. Pavers may not require a permit because they are not permanent and can be removed.

When choosing among pavers or concrete around a pool or water source, it is important to select a texture that will not be slippery when wet. Otherwise accidents may occur.

HYDROSEEDING ~ GRADING ~ STAMPED CONCRETE

The choice between concrete and pavers is largely one of personal preference. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages to consider.

Conquer Sidewalk Cracks Most homeowners can identify with the dilemma of a cracked sidewalk. In addition to being a safety hazard, a cracked sidewalk can also be an eyesore. Whether strolling to the backyard garden or walking to your home's entryway, a cracked sidewalk can catch your eyes for all the wrong reasons. Fortunately, repairing a cracked sidewalk isn't very difficult. * Enlarge the crack. The first thing to do when repairing cracks that are bigger than a hairline crack is to enlarge the crack. Use a chisel and hammer to enlarge the crack along its entire length.

* Undercut the crack. When repairing a crack, you want to undercut the crack. Undercutting means you will be making the crack wider at the bottom than at the top. When it's time to lay new concrete, undercutting will help create a stronger bond between the new concrete and the old. * Remove loose material. Once the crack has been undercut, remove any loose material, then brush the cleaned area with a wire brush to be sure no residual materials are still there. * Apply a concrete adhesive. A concrete adhesive isn't a necessity, but it will help the new concrete hold when the time comes to lay it down. Once the adhesive has been brushed into the undercut area, allow it to dry until it has a slightly sticky feel. Homeowners who prefer not to use a concrete adhesive should moisten the area that needs repairing with water. Just moisten the area, as you don't want any standing water on the area that needs to be repaired with new concrete. * Apply the concrete as directed. When using a pre-mixed concrete patch, all you will likely need to add is water. For larger cracks, some homeowners prefer to mix their own patch. When mixing your own patch, you will likely need to add sand and/or gravel. Follow the cement manufacturer's instructions if mixing your own patch. * Tightly tamp the patch into the undercut area. All areas should be completely filled. * Smooth the repaired area down. As the mixture starts to set, use a trowel or wooden float to smooth down the repaired area. * Allow the repaired area to dry. Give the repaired area a couple of hours to dry. After roughly two hours, cover the repaired area with boards or plastic sheeting.

Did You Know? Highlighting, or up lighting, is a landscaping technique in which light from below is used to accent certain focal points in a landscape. In many instances, the light is used to illuminate a particularly impressive or unique plant. When highlighting, two or more spot light fixtures are placed at the base of a landscape component and pointed upward. While highlighting is most commonly used to illuminate plants, it can be used to draw attention to other focal points of a landscape as well, including sculptures or other garden structures. Light fixtures are aimed away from observers as a means to preventing glare, and oftentimes the fixtures themselves are camouflaged to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape.

Protecting Hardwood Floors

Roughly half of all homes have hardwood flooring, and industry professionals suspect more and more homeowners are looking to hardwood flooring for their homes. When surveyed, 90 percent of real estate agents have said that hardwood flooring is a desirable feature in a home. Those agents also say property with hardwood flooring sells faster than one with carpeting or another flooring option.

With hardwood flooring so prevalent in homes, protecting those beautiful wood floors is a major priority for homeowners. Caring for hardwood floors only takes some common sense precautions and minimal maintenance. Today's hardwood floors are often produced with durable sealants that protect the wood underneath or are comprised of composite or reclaimed wood products. But that doesn't mean precautions should be taken Homeowners can take several steps to protect to further protect against potential damage to the their investment in timeless and attractive hard- flooring.

* Place area rugs or mats at the doorways entering the home. This way sand, dirt and other debris can be wiped off at the entryway and not carried onto the wood flooring where it can cause abrasions over time.

* Pay careful attention to which types of shoes are worn on the floors. High heels or cleats can damage the wood. Removing shoes prior to walking on the floor is a safer bet.

* Choose the right type of cleaner for the floor. Do not assume just because a particular cleaner is adequate for wood cabinetry or furniture that it is also fine for wood flooring. Check the label.

* Use area rugs and carpet runners on areas of the floor that tend to be high-traffic areas. This will prevent these areas from being worn down unevenly from other areas of the floor.

* Do not allow water or other liquids to stand on the floor for a long duration. This can cause degradation of the wood and staining.

* Use felt or plastic protectors on the "feet" of dining room chairs or other furniture to prevent against scuffing or scratches.

Wood flooring can be an expensive addition to any home, but one that is sought after for its aesthetic appeal. To ensure a floor remains in good condition over the long haul, take action to protect hardwood floors as soon as possible.

Climate a Key Factor When Choosing the Right Grass Choosing a new grass for a lawn depends on more than just aesthetic appeal. Where a person lives and the type of lawn he or she has should carry more weight than how a lawn looks upon its initial installation. Climate is often the ultimate determining factor if a grass will thrive or wilt in a given region. Because climate plays such a big role, grasses are often categorized as "cool-climate" or "warm-climate."

one of the more high-maintenance grasses. Homeowners who plant creeping bentgrass should expect to mow it frequently.

* Shade tolerant fescues: As their name suggests, shade tolerant fescues handle shade very well. These fescues, which include fine fescues and red fescues, typically have very fine blades and can survive extreme cold as well as withstand hot summers. Shade tolerant fescues are typically medium to dark green and perform best when planted in the fall or during spring. Warm-climate grasses

* Bermuda grass: Bermuda grass is a very popular warm-climate grass as it's capable of withstanding the heat but does not do nearly as well in the shade. Common Bermuda grass can be somewhat coarse and establishes itself rapidly. Golfers would likely recognize Bermuda grass, as it's commonly used on golfing greens. When planting Bermuda grass, it's best to do so in spring.

Cool-climate grasses * Kentucky bluegrass: The most popular cool-climate grass, Kentucky bluegrass is ideal for lawns that get lots of sun. Because it has shallow roots, Kentucky blue grass is not very drought-tolerant. If planting Kentucky bluegrass, it's best to do so in fall or spring. Kentucky bluegrass is medium-textured with green to dark green turf.

* St. Augustine grass: St. Augustine grass requires at least six hours of direct sun per day. Best planted in early summer, St. Augustine grass is fast-growing.

* Perennial ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is generally easy to find and grows quickly from seed. Commonly mixed with Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrasses are shiny with a medium to dark green turn and a fine or medium Climate often dictates which types of grass are successful in specific regions of texture. It's best to plant perennial ryegrass in the fall. the country.

* Creeping bentgrass: Very low and very fine in texture, creeping bentgrass, like all bent grasses, is susceptible to a variety of fungal diseases, making it

* Zoysia grass: Zoysia grass grows slower than most warm-climate grasses, but some Zoysia species also have a much greater cold tolerance. Zoysia grass has a medium green color and the texture is medium. The deep root system of Zoysia grass enables it to withstand most difficult droughts. Best planted in early summer, Zoysia grass is resistant to insect problems and disease.

* Centipede grass: Light to medium green in color, centipede grass is generally low-maintenance and performs better in shade than most of its warm-weather counterparts. Shallow roots make centipede grass susceptible to drought, but those shallow roots also make it perform better in poor soil. Centipede grass is best planted during the spring.

4 Once Popular Trends Losing Favor Among Homeowners

2. Carpeting: Although a little over half of all homes still have carpeting, wood floors, tiles and vinyl products are gaining ground over the once staple of interior design.

Housing trends come and go. Just think of those avocado-colored stoves from the 1970s or the formica bedroom sets of the 1980s. The woodburning fireplace was a must-have home accessory in the early 1990s, but now it is losing ground to pellet stoves and greener options. Here are a few other housing trends that are going out of style and making room for newer designs.

3. Skylights: The once desired windows on roofs have continued to decline in popularity. Many new home manufacturers have nixed skylights from their designs. Improperly installed skylights tend to leak and can be maintenance nightmares.

1. Kitchen desks: What used to be all the rage a few years back are now being passed over for larger desks in family rooms or bedrooms. Kitchen desks tend to be small and are more likely to collect clutter than provide a viable working space.

4. Living rooms: Homeowners who do not desire a formal living space are eschewing living rooms for all-purpose rooms that provide a better place for the family to gather. If a person prefers the TV be separate from a sitting area, then two distinct rooms still may be needed.

Basement Versatility (MS) -- These days every inch of space in the home counts. So, when considering building a new home, it makes sense to consider building both "up and down" to maximize your living space. "Basements are like 'found space' in the home because they're so versatile that you can make a well-built basement an extension of your living areas," says Jim Costello, president of Superior Walls. "To maximize basement space, it's critical to construct the area below ground with a pre-cast insulated foundation system that's energy-efficient and damp free. This way the basement area is a welcoming, active part of the home rather than a 'dump all' storage area." Costello recommends constructing a basement with Xi wall panels. Each precast foundation panel is constructed with a concrete face shell, backed by 21/2-inches of DOW Styrofoam insulation. Steel reinforced concrete walls create a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration, making the basement system damp-proof.

Basement built with pre-cast insulated Xi wall panels provides added living space for homeowners.

"These foundation systems are very popular with homeowners because you can create door and window openings in them to access natural light," says Costello. "By making the right decisions at the time of construction to use pre-cast insulated foundation systems, homeowners are making a long-term investment in their family's happiness and in the resale value of their house." For more information visit www.superiorwalls.com.

What homeowners are breathing in every day has the potential to harm their health. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it's the air inside of the home, rather than the air outside, that may cause the most physical harm. Many people seek options to reduce the toxicity of indoor air through a filtration system. Indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more toxic than outside air. Newer, energy-efficient homes that are very well insulated against drafts may be among the most dangerous. That's because they restrict the ability for fresh air to seep into the home. Resident dust mites, harmful airborne particulates and even mold could be residing in the house along with its occupants. An air filtration system can be one strategy homeowners can employ to clean up indoor air.

Homeowners may want to consider a permanent, whole-house unit that hooks up to the central heating and air conditioning already set up in the home. This enables every room in the home to receive filtered air. It is essential that the filters on the unit be changed frequently. Also, if a humidifier is hooked up to the HVAC unit, then the water should be changed on a regular basis so that mold does not proliferate and get blown throughout the home. Homeowners who don't have forced-air heating and cooling will have to have a different filtration system installed instead. For renters or individuals who don't want a permanent system, there are many portable air filtration units on the market. These can be moved from room to room and even brought along when traveling. Air filtration units will vary depending on what they are cleaning from the air. Some tackle mold, others viruses and bacteria. Individuals with allergies should look for filters that target dust and pollen. Others can trap fumes and microscopic particles through unique processes. Here are some of the advanced cleaning filtration systems to consider. * Ionizers: Emit a small electric charge to the air stream creating a magnetic-like attraction for pollution particles, which causes them to adhere to the filter.

* Ultraviolet light purification: Air passes through a UV system that destroys bacteria, viruses and dust mites of any size.

* Electrostatic precipitators: These create opposite charges on metal wires or plates, attracting and holding dust, pollen, smoke, and other particles as small as .0001 microns. The assembly often can be removed and washed for reuse.

* High efficiency particulate air (HEPA): These filters are designed to remove 99.97 percent of the particulates that pass through the filters. They will have no effect on fumes, viruses, bacteria, smaller mold spores, or some tobacco particulates.

* Ultra HEPA: An even more efficient form of HEPA cleaners, which typically clean out 99.999 percent of the particulates that pass through them.

* Ozone: Destroys all bacteria that comes in contact with the ozone, and leaves a "fresh" smell in the air. However, the safety of ozone inside the home is questionable. The Canadian government has banned the sale of ozone releasing air purification systems.

Safety First When Building Backyard Playground for Kids Few things are as enjoyable for parents and grandparents as watching their children and grandchildren play. As cherished as such playtime can be, it can quickly turn into a memory adults and children alike would prefer to forget if an injury occurs. Playground accidents vary in severity. Some produce just a scrape or a scratch, while more drastic accidents can lead to broken bones or even death. And where those accidents occur might come as a surprise to parents. Ten years ago, a study conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission discovered more deaths occurred on backyard playground equipment than on public playgrounds. A 2009 study from the CPSC found that 40 deaths were associated with playground equipment between 2001 to 2008, the majority of which were the result of hangings or asphyxiations. Naturally, parents aware of such statistics are concerned, Parents must consider a host of safety factors when p a r t i c u l a r l y building a backyard playground for children. those who want to erect a playground for their children on their own property. When building a home playground for children, parents should consider the following factors. Location, location, location! A home playground's location is very important. When deciding where to put a playground, consider its accessibility. Is the

Should an accident occur, is the playground within earshot of the home? Kids often play on a home playground while their parents are inside, so be sure to locate the playground close enough to the home where you can see and hear your kids from the house, and in a spot that's easy to get to should an accident occur. Equipment Though most parents would love to build their children a home playground that rivals the nearby amusement park, some equipment has historically proven to be more dangerous than others. A 2009 report from the CPSC indicated that climbers were associated with 23 percent of all playground injuries while swings were associated with 22 percent. When installing equipment, be sure everything is installed in strict adherence to the manufacturer's instructions. Surfaces According to the CPSC, 67 percent of playground accidents

between 2001 and 2008 involved falls or equipment failure. Most kids are going to fall once or twice when playing on the playground. Parents can plan for such falls and minimize their child's injury risk by installing impact-absorbing surfaces beneath the playground. Such surfaces are the standard at many public playgrounds and can make the difference between a simple fall or one that results in broken bones or a trip to the emergency room. Inspection

Kids often like to play rough, and as a result playgrounds commonly take quite a beating. Even if equipment was sturdy at installation and was installed to the letter of the manufacturer's instructions, parents should routinely inspect equipment to ensure it's holding up to the wear and tear of children. Ask kids to let you know immediately if anything feels loose or isn't working properly.

How to Make Stairs Safer

Many household injuries are attributed to falls down stairs. Even a simple slip can result in a sprained or fractured ankle or another broken bone. Young children and the elderly may be especially vulnerable when it comes to staircase injuries. There are ways to help prevent the scores of accidents attributed to stairs.

* Make sure stairs are clear of clutter. Any item left on the stairs is a tripping hazard, whether that be an errant sock or one of the kid's toy cars. There should be nothing on the stairs that hinders a person's ability to go up and down safely.

* Make sure the stairs are well-lit. Ample illumination can make it easier to see the stairs and prevent shadows from forming. Feel free to increase the wattage of bulbs used over staircases. If visibility continues to be a problem, as may be the case with basement steps, put a strip of reflective tape on the edge of the steps.

* Make sure railings are secure -- and used. Falls can be avoided by holding on to sturdy railings.

* Make sure stairs aren't slippery. Non-slip runners or other attachments can prevent falls from slippery stairs.

Gardening Fans Find a Growing Garden Pest Just Plain Stinks There's little escape from a garden pest that has been increasingly showing up in yards and homes in the Northeast. Wreaking havoc on ornamental plants, vegetables and fruit trees, this pest, simply put, stinks.

The brown marmorated stink bug is not native to North America, but it hitched a ride over from China and Japan years ago. Since 1999, when the first documented cases of stink bugs were made, the bug has multiplied, so much so that stink bug plagues in many residential areas have become commonplace.

A stink bug is a true bug, feeding on many plants by piercing the host plant and sucking The brown marmorated stink bug is native to Asia, but out juices with its proboscis. The penetrated it is now calling North America home as well. area can develop necrosis and damage affected plants in many ways. In Japan, the bug is known to be a pest to fruit and soybean crops. Stink bugs get their names from the scent glands on the underside of the thorax between the first and second pair of legs. If the bugs are squashed, they can emit a foul smell, which is primarily used to thwart would-be predators.

Stink bugs do not bite or sting. If one is found inside or too close for comfort, the best idea is to have it walk onto something, like a piece of paper or fly swatter and move it outdoors. Crushing the bug can cause it to emit a foul odor, although one bug alone is not enough to stink up a home.

Hurry In, Quantities Are Limited!

Stink bugs begin to feed in late May or early June. They can be seen in abundance in outdoor areas, clinging to window screens or walking along decks. Their size and appearance (almost an inch big, with a brown spiky-looking armor) often makes people weary of the bugs. Apart from the damage they do to plants, stink bugs are relatively harmless to people and pets. Although they have wings and can fly, stink bugs are generally content to travel on their legs.

Homeowners should keep in mind that stink bugs prefer to overwinter inside and hibernate. That means that come the fall season the bugs will seek entry to homes and buildings to beat the cold until they can venture out the next season. This is where they can be vexing to people. Coming across a stink bug tucked inside of a blanket or at the back of a closet can catch individuals off guard.

To prevent stink bugs from entering the home, homeowners can seal any openings to the outdoors as much as possible, caulking around windows and doors. Stink bugs can live up to a year or more and may reproduce several times if the weather conditions are right. It may be difficult to completely eradicate all pests.

Garden Tools No Green Thumber Should Go Without

* Spading fork: A spading fork helps gardeners break up soil that's too rocky for a shovel to handle. Spading forks can loosen the soil, turn it over and even be used as a spreader.

Gardening is a rewarding hobby and one that gardeners know is forever evolving. Organic gardening is one relatively new trend that is growing in popularity. But even trendsetters need their gardening tools, and the following tools are among the many no gardener should ever be without.

* Wheelbarrow: A wheelbarrow helps ease some of the physical demand associated with gardening. Rather than carrying tools one-by-one or manually lifting heavy bags of fertilizer or soil, simply toss these items in the wheelbarrow to make it easier to garden throughout the yard. Plastic wheelbarrows are durable and often much ligther than their metal counterparts.

* Shovels: Gardening might be relaxing, but it's no walk in the park, either. Gardeners can expect to do lots of digging, and a good shovel is essential. A round-nosed shovel is ideal for digging holes for plants, while gardeners can use the flat blade of a square-nosed shovel to edge neatly.

* Garden hoe: Remove weeds and work on the soil with a standard garden hoe. A Dutch hoe is ideal for larger garden areas as it's better for breaking up the soil before planting, while a draw hoe is better for working between plants, such as when weeds need to be removed.

Pressure Wash Pros

* Rakes: A rake is not just effective in late fall when it's time to clear the yard of all those fallen leaves. Leaf rakes can be used to remove debris, such as grass clippings, from a garden, while a garden rake can be used to spread mulch and smooth out the soil within the garden.

Running a retail business is a lot like doing improv. Just ask Ron DeLucia, owner of Delucia’s Grocery and Deli. Better yet, stop in and he’ll demonstrate. DeLucia is an entertaining entrepreneur. Or is it an entrepreneurial entertainer? Whatever the case, DeLucia can do it all with a straight face (if he chooses). And, unless you’re one of his many regular customers, ordering one of his luncheon daily specials you may have trouble figuring out exactly when he’s serious and when he’s pulling your leg. Every once in a while, though, a small impish grin creeps into the corners of his mouth ‌ then it’s a dead giveaway. In the meantime he’s bound to keep you guessing. And that’’s just one small part of the schtick that keeps you coming back for some of the many grocery items. “If you think about it, you’re really on stage when you’re in the store,â€? DeLucia observed. I developed my sense of humor growing up in this store. You have to think on your feet in this business, just as you do with improv.â€? DeLucia took over the family business in 1982 after finding success in theatre and improv in Los Angeles. DeLucia’s charted path changed once again when he returned to the East Coast to help with the business. “I planned to be here for three years,â€? he said. “That was 18 years ago.â€? Perhaps it was a familial destiny. The business was first started by DeLucia’s grandparents in Mechanicville in the early 1930’s. “They were basically fruit peddlers,â€? DeLucia said. “They lost the business during the Depression; later, they built a small place on Saratoga Lake. in 1939, they bought the Route 9 building where DeLucia’s Grocery and Deli is now located.â€? DeLucia’s parents took over in the 40’s. After four decades, DeLucia’s mother sublet the store to other operators. “My father passed away in 1967 and it was tough for her to run the store by herself all those years,â€? DeLucia explained. DeLucia decided to return to the business when he realized the person operating the store wasn’t carrying on the tradition that the DeLucia family had worked so hard to build – namely, impeccable, friendly, personalized customer service. “We won’t sell an empty box. We sell a feeling. I call it ‘customer lavishment’,â€? DeLucia said. “The business is still the core of what it was when my grandparents started it; it is still about people.â€? It’s still about giving service that’s from a bygone era. how many times can you go into a store today and have the clerk (or owner, for that matter) call you by name? It’s the norm after you’ve been in DeLucia’s a few times. You don’t usually have to pay more than one visit, though, to receive the DeLucia ribbing, jesting and subtle, straight-faced joking. It’s the little extra you get when you stop by for grocery items, lunch, incredible large subs have 1 lb. of meat and sandwiches made with Boarshead meats, Land of Lake cheese, lottery tickets or something from the vast selection of soda, beer and other thirst quenchers. “My philosophy is about living a life of expectancy and gratitude. I expect good in my life and I am grateful for it. I expect my customers to be a lot of fun and to have a lot of fun. They are and they do ‌ and I’m very grateful for that,â€? DeLucia said. The entrepreneur built on this foundation of service. “I feel that DeLucia’s is really a reflection of me. I try to loook at how I can make myself better and how I can make the business better. It’s about seeing the business as it is and as it will be – that’s called double vision,â€? DeLucia explained with a smile. “I want to be in a position to make changes before things actually need to be changed – paint before you need to paint.â€? “You only regret the things you don’t do,â€? DeLucia said. Those who have had the pleasure of interacting with DeLucia can only hope he keeps on “doing. “
