Gifts no sports fan should go without Few things make holiday shoppers happier than giving a gift that instantly lights up a loved one’s eyes. All the work that goes into finding and securing the perfect gift becomes worth it and then some when the recipient’s smile stretches from ear to ear. A great holiday gift often involves someone’s favorite hobby. When gifting the family sports fan, the options are endless. Sports fans tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and they’re liable to be just as vocal with appreciation if any of these gifts are waiting under the tree for them this

* Magazine subscription: Many sports fans feel they can never get enough information on their favorite teams and sports. A magazine subscription to Sports Illustrated or another periodical focusing on a particular sport can provide insider access for a year or longer. Magazine subscriptions are typically inexpensive, but they provide lots of bang for your gifting buck, especially weekly publications. In addition, many magazines now give print subscribers access to exclusive content online, playing to your favorite sports fan’s ever-growing desire for more knowledge. * Sports apparel: According based market research firm, were expected to approach those sales are sports fans of their favorite teams. Apgift, whether it’s an authenhoodie or a personalized Tfans to their teams.

to IBISWorld, a Californiaonline sporting apparel sales $5 billion in 2012. Driving who can’t wait to don the gear parel makes a great holiday tic player jersey, a team logo shirt that directly connects

* Memorabilia: Sports memorabilia can be costly, but shoppers can still find great deals on everything from autographed items to relics of a franchise’s fledgling days. When shopping for memorabilia, be wary of auctions, where “shill bidding” can drive up the price of coveted items. Shill bidding occurs when owners bid on their own items at auction in an attempt to drive up the sale price. And authentication can be an issue with regard to sports memorabilia. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been cracking down on fraudulent memorabilia. Shoppers without knowledge of the memorabilia industry might want to focus on less expensive items that will be a hit under the tree but won’t be a hit to their bank accounts.

* Video games: Many sports fans indulge in their love of a favorite sport by playing video games. Like most technology, video games are consistently reinvented, so last year’s game might already be outdated, making video games an ideal holiday gift. Those who want to go the extra mile can include a new gaming console along with the latest video game.

* Tickets: Of course, sports fans might like nothing more than tickets to see their favorite teams play. Buying directly from a sports team is a safe bet, but it can also be expensive. Savvy shoppers can explore the legal secondary market, which includes online retailers like StubHub.com or even league-affiliated programs like NFLTicket Exchange, where they might find more affordable tickets. When gifting tickets, do so far enough in advance of the game so fans have time to plan their trip and, if need be, take a day off from work.

The countdown to the holidays is on, bringing with it the challenge of how to serve a large gathering fast and easy. Fear not! There’s a simple solution. Forego the traditional, full-service, sitdown meal and opt instead for a buffet-style serving. Gillis. “That’s better than crowding everyone together or asking guests to balance plates on laps while sitting on your sofa.” To seat people quickly (and without a fuss), use place cards. 3. Keep It Simple: Flowers in a vase are so last year. Instead, style up the buffet with an eye-catching “Gratitude Tree,” a sculptural bronze metal tabletop tree festooned with ribboned tree tags. Guests write what they’re thankful for on tags and after dinner’s done, take turns reading. This is a unique way to remind guests about the true meaning of the day and, because the tree arrives ready for display, it’s a real timesaver. Remember -- every minute saved adds up to extra time you can spending enjoying the day with your guests.

Lola

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 2 Year Old Female, Brown/Orange Hello there, my name is Lola. I’m a brown patch tabby with white feet. I have lovely rusty cheeks. I enjoy being petted and will purr for you, but I’d rather not be picked up. My former family had landlord problems and couldn’t keep me. I am feeling shy while trying to adjust to the changes in my life. Although I have spent time around other cats, I would really prefer to be an only. Someone adopted me recently but returned me just 2 days later because the resident cat and I didn’t get along. I don’t want to have to go through that again.

(MS) -- A dream home means different things to different people. To some, an ideal home sits atop a hill and has enough rooms to accommodate generations upon generations of family members. To others, a home small in stature but with views to die for is all a homeowner needs. While preferences may vary on the home itself, there are a few things buyers of all shapes and sizes prefer when shopping for the home of their dreams. * Agreeable weather. Vacation home shoppers often prefer year-round warm weather so they know their respite from the cold is never too far away. For example, a locale such as Port St. Lucie, Florida boasts an average temperature of 73.7* F, providing the ideal getaway to snowbound men and women stuck in the throes of winter. * Affordability. A dream home stays a dream for many people because of the misconception that it is beyond their financial reach. “While a seaside villa in Italy might never be a reality, there are places where it is still affordable to own and maintain a vacation home,” says Andrew Nadalin, President of Pace 2000 Inc. Compared to neighboring counties, St. Lucie County and Martin County represent the

piece of South Florida that is still considered affordable. Endowed with the rich quality of life South Florida has to offer, both St. Lucie and Martin counties also offer and affordable cost-of-living vacationers will appreciate. * Accessibility of activities. While an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is great, no one wants to escape to a place with nothing to do. When shopping for a place to buy or build your dream get-

away, be sure there’s plenty of accessibility to popular activities like boating, fishing, diving, surfing, canoeing, or kayaking. * Proximity to other hotspots. Even if you’re looking for a place to simply unwind, a dream home’s proximity to hotspots or other exotic locales never hurts. Port St. Lucie, for example, offers all a vacationer needs to relax and unwind, and it’s only 90 miles from the Bahamas by boat and a short drive

to Miami, Palm Beach and Orlando.

* Proximity to major airports. Unless you plan on living in your vacation home yearround, you’ll want the home to be somewhere that’s close to major airports. This makes it easier to get to your home and flights won’t be as expensive.

Stay abreast of vehicle recall information Driving a new vehicle off of the sales lot can be exciting. Brand-new vehicles are supposed to be reliable and free from maintenance concerns. However, sometimes manufacturers recall a vehicle, forcing drivers to visit the auto body shop sooner than they had hoped. According to the Auto Insurance Organization, 390 million vehicles have been recalled since the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act became law in

1966. Vehicles are recalled for a variety of reasons, including poorly performing tires, faulty pieces of motor vehicle equipment and unsafe child safety seats. From 2009 to 2010, Toyota alone recalled 8.5 million cars, the single largest recall in history. It can be disconcerting to learn that your vehicle is being recalled. The uneasiness of driving a potentially dangerous vehicle coupled with the prospect of being without a car can be daunting. Vehicle manufacturers must

notify consumers that a recall is in place. But sometimes a vehicle owner may not be aware that there is a recall. In the event of large recalls, like the recent ones involving Toyota and Bridgestone Tires, the story makes the national news. But there are other ways drivers can stay current on recall information to ensure their personal safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an arm of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is a source of information on vehicle re-

calls. Their database dates back to 1966. The NHTSA provides information on equipment recalls, entire vehicle recalls, child safety seat recalls, and tire recalls. There also is information on school bus recalls.

Individuals can visit www. Recalls.gov and select the categories they want to check. To check recalls on a particular motor vehicle, select that category, enter the make and model as well as the year, and the information about any recalls will appear.

Bow Empties for Animals

Wow!

Keep Them Coming!!

Goldstein Auto Group Partners With Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for “Empties For Animals” Campaign Donations up 33% at the end of 3rd Quarter

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group. The bottles can be Goldstein Buick/GMC, 1671 Central Avenue, Albany dropped off at any Goldstein Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 613 Loudon Rd, Latham of the four Goldstein Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue, Albany Auto Group locations: Goldstein Mitsubishi, 1673 Central Avenue, Albany

IF YOU HAVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF CANS OR BOTTLES TO DONATE, PLEASE CALL STEFANIE GOLDSTEIN AT (518) 869-1250 or EMAIL: SRGT@GOLDSTEIN AUTO.COM TO ARRANGE A PICK UP.

It’s always fun to drive through the town of Halfmoon. For all the talk of bulldozers, strip malls and apartment buildings it’s easy to forget that this is a large and beautiful community with rolling hills, country farms, waterfront attractions on two rivers, pretty parks, historic sites and buildings, and yes, a thriving business community. No wonder people are flocking to live there! Readers in other communities might be pleasantPete Bardunias, ly surprised to know what a contrasting experience President/CEO, the Chamber awaits them a short distance away. For example, try of Southern Saratoga County a walk on the old Champlain Canal trail, literally in the footsteps of the mules and canallers of a century ago. It’s one of the most preserved parts of the waterway within southern Saratoga County, and the Town of Halfmoon is working to keep it that way. Supervisor Mindy Wormuth announced improvements to the McDonald Creek Weir, an important spot on the trail, this fall. Many interesting roads also wind through Halfmoon, past cornfields, vegetables and cattle in their pasture. Many housing developments either built or building, such as Swatling Falls off Upper Newtown Rd and Adams Pointe, on Julia Circle, are alongside farmland or adjacent to land preservation areas, offering families a unique experience to connect with the land on which their communities are built. During a recent visit to Adams Pointe I remarked that its proximity to a working farm means you can experience farm life without having to do any of the work! Halfmoon’s farm families do work hard, such as the Hayners who sell produce (and yummy ice cream too!), or Mary Taylor of Spring Brook Farm, who makes wool products, natural crafts, and textiles for local consumption. Mary has a passion for education too, and she’s a great citizen. So next time you drive through Halfmoon, pay attention to what’s going on outside your window – there’s more than you think!
