Grafton Summer Festival

CAPITAL DISTRICT/GRAFTON - The Town of Grafton’s Summer Festival is again scheduled to be held in the historic Grafton Town Park on Saturday, July 14, 2018. The park is located on NYS Route 2, one mile east of the State Park entrance. Again this year the Civil War reenactors called Crenshaw’s Battery will have an encampment with several soldiers in full garb with a display of “authentic” tents, equipment and personal firearms. Two cannons will be on display and the long rifles and cannons will be fired providing excitement and education for the large crowds that gather for these patriotic displays. Crenshaw’s Battery is sponsored by the Grafton Community Library. Sister Kennan McGowan’s Memorial Giant Raffle will have close to 100 prizes with a grand prize of $1,500.00. Tickets are available from most parishioners of Our Lady of the Snow Mission and Our Lady of Victory Church. Tickets will also be sold all day on Saturday, July 14, 2018. There will be a chicken BBQ to be served from 12:00 noon until 3pm, or when the meals are sold out. The dinners consist of ½ chicken, baked potato, coleslaw and dessert and can be enjoyed on site or for take-out. It is suggested that tickets for the dinner be obtained ahead of time and reserved by calling 518-421-5070. The local Boy Scouts will be providing hamburgers, hotdogs, sausage and peppers and cold soft drinks. In the morning they will be providing coffee, donuts and other breakfast items. We will be having music all day, with Wayne Russell and his band Skippy Dread. We will also have a band comprised of local musicians from Our Lady of the Snow and the Troy area playing for the festival-goers. Since the inception of the Grafton Festival over 25 years ago, we have had a craft fair and flea market with vendors selling a large selection of crafts and exotic items, including antiques, collectibles, hand-crafted jewelry and woodworking items. It is anticipated that 50-75 vendors will be participating. The Grafton Community Library and the Grafton Historical Society will have booths, as will several other community organizations. Our Lady of the Snow will offer homemade baked goods, including “mini” pies, cupcakes and numerous other sweets. The youth ministry of Our Lady of Victory will be providing popcorn, face painting and other youth-oriented activities. The festival provides the people and friends of Grafton the opportunity to meet their neighbors and the people who serve them in various volunteer capacities. To join in the festivities, call 518-466-8555 for more information and registration forms as a vendor or participant.

Loving Homes Needed For Wonderful Animals CAPITAL DISTRICT - Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all it’s dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month. Searching for that special dog? Come join us at an adoption clinic at Latham Farms PETSMART the first and second Saturday of each month and at Clifton Park PETSMART the fourth Saturday of each month. Questions? Contact Jennifer 664-3450. Our adoptable dogs include: Chihuahua Mixes, Terrier Mixes, and many other small dogs. New dogs join our rescue weekly.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Simone

What a beautiful 4-5 month old Rottie mix girl!!! We have heard that Simone is SUCH a sweetheart!! She has that friendly Rottie disposition that we know Rottie lovers adore! She became friends with little Garkfunkel while they were in Foster care, and now they are heading up North together so that they can find their furever homes! We know that she’s going to make a fantastic addition to a lucky family soon!

Rock & Dancer Meet Rock & Dancer!!! These two grew up in a home with their Momma, but now since they are around 10 weeks old and their Momma is getting spayed soon, it is time for them to find their own furever homes! We are not sure what their mix is, but we are told they are little Lab mixes! They are very well socialized and personable!

Wade Shepherd Duo These two are beautiful! If you are a lover of larger breeds like Shepherds and Hounds, we think you will really like these two! They are Shepherd/Hound mix babies who are around 3 months old and they are super sweet! They have been in foster care for a couple of weeks, where they have opened up and become incredibly friendly pups!

Books For Troops Asks For Additional Items To Include In Our Boxes Of Books

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops would like to include other small items of entertainment in our boxes of books. The troops always mention that boredom is one of their greatest enemies. We now include DVDs, Books on CD, comics and puzzle books, as well as the books. We can always use more of these, as they go very quickly when mailing to so many troops. For a complete list of other items the troops would enjoy, please go to our website at www. Booksfor Troopscp.webs.com and look under the new heading Newsletter, changed from “Nice Happenings.” Many of these items may be found in dollar stores or in Walmart for the best prices. Items can be left in our collection boxes at our office at 688 Rt. 9, Latham; Bella Napoli, Latham and Halfmoon Town Hall, or mailed to Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065. Please place your (items) in a bag with your name and phone number if you want to be entered into a raffle for your choice of $100 cash, or $100 gas card, grocery card or Amazon card. The drawing for these tickets will be on August 31st and the winner will be notified by phone on that day. Any questions can be sent to ekeegan3@nycap.rr.com. SUMMER SOWING

Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden... much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’. Beans are easy from seed. Let’s take a look at beans. According to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. The back of the seed pack has complete growing instructions. Following the instructions, make a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. Now just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. Once they sprout, you’ll need to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” Growing instructions are on the packet. spacing the seed pack indicated they need. It is tempting to let them all got but you’ll get better results if the plants are spaced so they get lots of light and air circulation. That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. “It’d too late to start a vegetable garden” is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July. Here’s a list of just some of our summer sowing possibilities: • Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Collards-Plant transplants until August 1st. • Dill-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. Sowing the bean seeds. • Kale-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks through September 1st. • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds until early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. Beans properly spaced. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August. Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out... you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

Heading for Home: Birdies and Brews Golf Event by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Joseph Battaglia has been a fan of both thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing his whole life. The president of Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, Battaglia realized when he became a standardbred racehorse owner in Saratoga Springs that there is a critical need for the aftercare of retired racehorses in the racing industry. Battaglia, along with other current members of the Heading for Home board, started the charity to help with addressing the “where do they go after racing” issue. “We thought the concept of Heading for Home would be an option for owners to consider,” he said. Volunteers of Heading Home have various backgrounds in the local equine industries and in the local business community. Heading for Home board member and practicing attorney, Sarah Burger, has represented clients in the horse industry. A native of Saratoga, she grew up around horses and believes in the mission of Heading for Home. “The organization’s focus on the aftercare of racehorses in conjunction with its focus on pairing horses with equine therapy services is so important in the horse industry,” Burger said. “I am a part of this organization because I believe in what it is doing.” The common denominator: offering the racing industry an option for horses at retirement. “A success story about a racehorse going on to a purposeful and fulfilling life after racing activity is something that should be celebrated as much as any successes they may have had on the racetrack,” Battaglia said. It is no secret that Saratoga Springs is a horse town. “The horses are the stars of the show when they are on the track and have much more to give after their racing days have ended. It is a responsibility that everyone associated with racing in any way should share,” he said. He thinks the community should be concerned for horses as they age off the track. “Saratoga being a racing community should take this responsibility very seriously since so much of our local economy is driven by its history of hosting horseracing. We owe a lot back to the horses. Just look at the walls of almost any Photo: Retired racehorses establishment you go into in the Saratoga area and you will likely Where’s Danny and Rock see images of horses.” Dj competed at Saratoga Heading for Home is one way Battaglia and the all-volunteer tracks and went through the board and staff are trying to save one horse at a time. The program Heading for Home program. Photos by Tracey Buyce accepts both thoroughbreds and standardbreds. “We help transition Horse Photography. them from the racetrack environment to a more relaxed setting and then evaluate each for potential options to adopters,” he said. “Our horses have participated in equine assisted counseling programs while in the care of Heading for Home. We are in the process of developing our connections in the community to use our horses and facilities for physical therapy programs as well. We are open to coordinating with other charities to expand the potential uses for our horses to create as many off the track options as possible for the horses,” he said. Heading for Home is a member of the Saratoga Racehorse Aftercare Charitable Endeavors collation (RACE). “RACE works together with other local charities in support of our common racehorses’ aftercare missions, including hosting the upcoming Run/Walk for the Horses on September 1st,” Battaglia said. The Run/Walk will be held at the Saratoga Spa State Park and will benefit participating local non-profits that rescue and provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Heading for Home is also participating in a joint program with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at its farm this summer. On Tuesday, July 17 Heading for Home is hosting its second annual charity golf event at Fairways of Halfmoon Golf Club, which includes local craft beer tastings at its award ceremony. The cost is $125 a player and includes lunch, dinner, golf, cart and craft beer samples. Raffles and prizes will round out the day. One hundred percent of proceeds raised at the tournament benefits local Heading for Home programs. “We rely heavily on donations and other support to keep our programs going and possibly expand them when feasible,” Battaglia said. Anyone interested in directly supporting the golf event can participate as players, sponsors or perhaps even by providing raffle items for the event. “The topic of racehorse aftercare becomes a hot topic during the local thoroughbred meet but the need goes on throughout the year. If someone shares that concern this is one way for them to step up and be an active participant in making a difference,” Battaglia said. For more information on how to register for the golf event or to volunteer please visit the organization’s website at www.headingforhomeadoptionhorses.org. Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. L.C.

Women Declining In Workforce

At its peak in 1999, the American workforce was dominated by female workers. At that time, 76 percent of women, including those who had children at home, worked outside of the home, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The tides have since shifted, and rates of female employment in the United States now fall well behind many European countries. Economic woes, a short supply of middleclass jobs and minimal family leave may have prompted the changes.

According to a study from researchers at Johns Hopkins University, single women without children have actually driven the turnaround. Technology and international outsourcing have removed many low-skill, well-paying jobs from the workforce. Wages for work in healthcare services, laundry and social assistance — jobs dominated by women — have remained relatively stagnant for years. Despite this, the cost of living has steadily crept up. Other households tout the high cost of childcare and the relatively small amount of maternity leave allowed in the United States as reasons why they haven’t returned to the workforce after having children. The economic analysis

resource The Upshot, powered by The New York Times, reports that many American companies give 12 weeks of maternity leave (largely unpaid), while most European countries give a year of paid leave and offer protections for part-time workers who want to return to the workforce. According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, and France now outrank the U.S. in prime-age women’s labor force participation. The role women play as caregivers, not only for their own children or spouses, but for aging parents, also may be contributing to females dropping out of the labor force. A chronic-needs family member, such as a parent with dementia, can take away focus from employment. This can quickly result in a loss of a job.
