LATHAM/COLONIE - “Who was Grace T. Watkins and What Happened on April 22, 1883?” Talk and readings from “The Inscription Add That Extra Comfort in the Window” - The Friends of Pruyn House welcome author, Sylvie 021518-1x2-DODGE-PCN-PCS-PLL-Penny.indd 2/12/18 1 11:03 AM To Your Home Briber on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 2 pm. When Sylvie and Bob Briber moved into their Schenectady Stockade home in 1995, they discovered an In 2018! inscription, in very tiny lettering, etched into their front parlor window. Schedule Early! A Grace T. Watkins inscribed her name there with the date of April 22, 1883. Living across the street from the Schenectady County Historical Society, Sylvie started researching, and uncovered so many coincidences about Grace, her house and her Stockade neighbors that she didn’t need CAPITAL the help of fiction! Writing it all down and then turning them into stories, DISTRICT it soon became a book. Please join us on Sunday, March 4, 2018 and Bernacki CONTRACTORS, W. DavidOwner hear Sylvie’s unfolding stories as she tries to solve the mystery of the INC. inscription in the window.

Community Events Board more inside… Men’s Garden Club Of Albany Meeting

ALBANY/COLONIE - The Men’s Garden Club of Albany will meet on Thursday, February 22, in the Lakeside Room at the Beltrone Living Center, 6 Winners Circle, Colonie. The program, which will start at 7:30 pm, will be presented by John McKenna, III. Mr. McKenna will relate how the death of his son Marine Captain John McKenna IV, who was killed in action, inspired him to retire and volunteer for projects to help others. His efforts led to the creation of the Albany Airport’s Military Courtesy Room for travelling military personnel. McKenna also chaired the committee for the Gold Star Family Monument in Lafayette Park in Albany. It seems appropriate to deviate from our usual garden topics to recognize these tributes on Washington’s Birthday. The program will be preceded by dinner at 6:30 pm ($25). Ladies and gentlemen are welcome at all meetings whether they come for dinner or just the program. Dinner reservations are needed by Monday, Feb. 19. At that time you can select from three menu choices. Reservations can be made by calling Russ Greenman at 518-477-8321.

We’re Thinking Sunshine! Volunteer As A Fresh Air Host Family CAPITAL DISTRICT - Fresh Air summers are filled with children running through the sprinklers in the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in the Albany area, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s lowincome communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. For more information about hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit www.freshair.org.

This winter has certainly brought plenty of crazy weather. As annoyingly frigid as recent weather has seemed, can you imagine if winter continued right on through summer? Well, that is exactly what happened in 1816; a year nearly two hundred years ago that produced snow and frost in June, frost in July and another killing frost in August. 1816 was known as “The Year There Was No Summer” and “Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death”. A volcano called Tambora explosively erupted in Indonesia in April of 1815. This eruption is regarded by many as the largest eruption in recorded history. The size and violence of this eruption forced an estimated 100 CUBIC MILES of dust, ash and sulfuric acid into the stratosphere. Many scientists feel that this dust and ash was responsible for “The Year There Was No Summer”. Let’s take a look at what they endured. The winter of 1815-1816 was a cold one that started early and lingered late. This was not uncommon and these northern farmers had endured many long winters and late spring cold. April and May were cold but most managed to get their crops planted. By early June, the leaves were out on the trees, the corn was up and vegetable gardens were in and growing. It looked like the long winter was over at last. Then things began to go terribly wrong. On June 5th in Williamstown, Mass., the temperature was a balmy 83 degrees, warm for that early in the season. By the next morning, the temperature was 45 degrees and still falling. This cold arctic air wasn’t isolated to Williamstown. From Canada to Virginia cold arctic air caused killing frosts to occur June 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Thousands of birds that had recently migrated into the area from the south froze to death. Sheep, recently shorn, froze to death even though they were brought inside. Farmers built bonfires around their fields to try to save the crops but all to no avail. Even the leaves on all the trees froze, blackened and fell to the ground. There was snow in New York and New England and on the June 6th 7th and 8th as far south as the Catskills. In Danville, Vermont the newspaper reports: “On the night of the 7th and morning of the 8th a kind of sleet or exceedingly cold snow fell, attended by high wind, and measured in places where it drifted 18 to 20 inches in depth. Saturday morning (8th of June) the weather was more severe than it generally is in the winter.” Standing water froze as far south as Philadelphia and in northern Vermont the ice was an inch thick. Even the ground started to freeze! By the 12th of June, the outbreak of cold ended. The hard work of planting was repeated. Farmers knew that, in spite of the late start, they still had enough time to get a decent crop of corn and beans and such….if the weather cooperated for the rest of the season. For four weeks the weather held. The second planting Frost on a rose. sprouted and was growing well. Folks felt a bit foolish about their earlier fears and chalked it up to their renowned New England weather. Their good cheer was not to last. At the end of the first week in July another, although less severe, outbreak of arctic air spilled over New England and eastern New York. All the crops in the valleys (where most of the farms were) were again killed or badly damaged. Most felt that a widespread famine was inevitable. Those who could procure seed again replanted and everyone prayed. It seemed that God himself had turned against them. After the first week of July, things returned to normal for a few more weeks. In addition to the cold in 1816, it was a dry year as well. In spite of their earlier failures, the farmers were optimistic that, if they got a break in September, things would be all right. Alas, another killing frost on August 20th visited much of New England and New York as far south as East Windsor, Conn. From Albany to Boston most of the crops again succumbed. Whatever survived that frost was finished off by an even colder spell during the last week of the month. As if that weren’t enough, temperatures dipped below freezing again September 11th and 12th. A more widespread frost at the end of September dashed any hope for crops that had managed to escape until then. The winter of 1816-1817 was indeed a winter of despair. Many tried to survive on milk and bread but bread was in short supply. It was a blessing that the ocean off New England’s coast was so bountiful. The task of feeding New England fell to the fishermen. Many landlubbers who had never eaten fish became very familiar with the taste of mackerel during 1817. When the snow and the cold get you down remember, it could be a lot worse. We may be sick and tired of winter weather but it’s nothing when compared to the trials the weather of 1816 put our ancestors through. Thanks for the read.

CAR CARE

The Best Ways To Prevent Car Theft

• Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only running into the house or a store for a few minutes. • Keep valuables hidden. Don’t leave purchases, cell phones, money (even loose change), expensive sunglasses, or electronics within sight in the vehicle. • Exercise caution with spare keys. Do not hide a spare key under the vehicle or in an obvious spot. Car thieves are wise to these tactics. Also, if you’ve lent a spare key to someone, ask for it back promptly. • Invest in a car alarm. Car alarms can deter thieves because they draw attention to the vehicle. Car alarms that also prevent the vehicle from being started or driven away (kill switch) can be helpful. • Use various locks. Manufacturers make steering wheel locks and brake locks that render cars undrivable unless they are removed. • Be visible when parking. Choose highly visible parking spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near security cameras and in well-lit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. • Don’t leave it running. According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions — such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the

Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. And it’s not just the expensive models that are targets of thieves.

• Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen, GPS tracking devices can help cops recover the vehicle more rapidly. Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

A couple of weeks ago we got a call that the Regional Humane Society in Alabama was overflowing with puppies and they were about to euthanize to clear the shelter. We immediately sent one of our rescue partners to the shelter to pick up as many as she could fit in her transport van. We rescued over 32 dogs that day. These pups are the ones that are ready for transport this week! We believe that they are Lab mixes that are around 7-9 weeks old and are very sweet. These good looking puppies are very thankful to have rescue!

This pretty Lady was found as a stray, roaming the street in Alabama and looking for safe haven. She was brought into a shelter and she had been sitting for a long time, waiting for someone to come and get her. Her time was running out and we couldn’t bear to see poor Lady not find a loving home! She is a Doxi mix who we believe is around 8 years old, and she weighs about 13 pounds. We think she would make an absolutely perfect companion for an older couple who is looking for a sweet, loving, and quiet little dog who likes to cuddle!

Did You Know? Cars and trucks can benefit greatly from clean air filters. Many drivers are aware of the need to change the oil in their vehicles according to the intervals designated in their owners’ manuals, but few may be aware of the many benefits of changing air filters. One such benefit pertains to fuel efficiency. The automotive website CarsDirect. com notes that studies have shown that changing clogged air filters can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent and save drivers as much as 15 cents per gallon of fuel. Clean air filters also can benefit the environment. When vehicle air filters are clogged, air flow to the engine is reduced, adversely affecting vehicle emissions. Clean filters increase air flow to the engine, reducing vehicle emissions as a result. Clean air filters also can help drivers get more out of their vehicle investments. Designed to trap dirt and debris, clean air filters prolong engine life by preventing such particles from damaging engine components. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals for air filter replacement guidelines, but manufacturers generally advise drivers change their air filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Such a repair is inexpensive but can go a long way toward ensuring vehicles operate as efficiently as possible.

Books For Troops Asks You To “Adopt-A-Box”

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Books for Troops has just completed its most successful year. In 2017, BFT was able to send over 1100 boxes of books (40 books/box) to the American military deployed all over world and to 25 VA hospitals within the states. While we were thrilled to provide this source of escape to our very appreciative troops, it has been very costly and only your generous support made it happen. Now we wish to repeat out record year, but our funds are low and we need your support again. Books for Troops is now presenting a challenge to those who wish to show their gratitude to our troops. We are asking you to “Adopt-A- Box,” or in other words, pay its postage of $15.00 to send it overseas or to the VA hospitals. The challenge is to see if 100 boxes can be adopted by April 30th. If so, $1500 will be raised and 100 boxes of books can be sent.

Tips For A Successful Driving Vacation Driving vacations can be budget-friendly ways to get away from home for a few days. Such excursions can be customized according to families’ particular schedules and interests. To make the most of driving vacations, travelers can employ these tips. • Map the destination. Figure out the duration of the trip ahead of time, jotting down approximate times of travel. This will help you break up the ride so you can include stops for food, bathroom breaks and fill-ups. • Plan food and accommodations. Some people like to plan road trips as they go. Those who prefer to have greater control can decide where to stop in advance, researching hotels, attractions and dining establishments. • Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.

• Pack stuff for kids to do. Prevent or delay the “are we there yets” with movies, puzzles, books, and music for children. Pack headphones so their devices will not disturb others. • Schedule a tuneup beforehand. Before departing, ensure your

vehicle is in good working order to reduce the likelihood of a breakdown. Make sure you have a spare tire and tire-changing tools, just in case. • Don’t pack too much. Leave some room in the vehicle for souvenirs picked up along the way. Take advantage of hotel laundry facilities to keep clothes fresh and to avoid having to pack too many outfits. • Adjust as you go. Even the

best plans need to be modified on occasion. Keep an open mind and be flexible so you can enjoy any unexpected wonders that may pop up. Flexibility also can help you adapt to traffic or detours.
