THESE APHRODISIACS MAKE FOR GREAT GIFTS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY If ever there was a day to rev up the libido and enjoy amorous feelings, that day is Valentine’s Day. The official day for love and romance offers couples the chance to spend time together and express their feelings of affection for each other. People have enjoyed foods purported to be aphrodisiacs for centuries. Believed to boost the libido, aphrodisiacs were enjoyed by Cleopatra and Casanova, and they were commonly used among ancient Greeks. Aphrodisiacs are agents that work on the mind and body to increase sexual desire and arousal. Foods affect the body in different ways and

can have a positive impact on how a person feels. Certain foods can help promote feelings of intimacy, increase blood flow and create euphoria. With Valentine’s Day upon us once again, here are some purported aphrodisiacs that can be incorporated into special dinners with a sweetheart. * Almonds: This nut has been regarded as a fertility symbol through the years. While it has been said almond aroma can incite passion, there is no concrete proof. Still, almonds are a good source of essential fatty acids and important B vitamins that can help prevent coronary artery disease.

* Asparagus: This vegetable may inspire lust in men and women, but it also is a good source of various vitamins. Asparagus is a member of the lily family that is nutrientdense, containing folic acid, potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, and thiamin. * Avocados: This fruit has a shape that could put people in the mood. In fact, centuries ago Catholic priests from Spain who visited Mexico found commonly grown avocados to be obscene and prohibited their consumption. * Bananas: Potassium is a key nutrient for muscle strength. Muscle contractions will be more intense and the body will have greater endurance after consuming bananas. * Chocolate: Chocolate and romance have often gone hand-in-hand. Chocolate contains the chemical phenylethylamine, a stimulant that releases dopamine and produces feelings of well-being and excitement. * Figs: This sweet fruit has been revered as an aphrodisiac for thousands of years. In many cultures, figs are considered to be a symbol of fer-

Figs are very high in fiber and have a higher mineral profile than any other fruit or vegetable. * Hot peppers: Chili peppers and others that contain capsaicin help to increase circulation and stimulate nerve endings. A spicy meal may lead to a spicy ending to the night. * Oysters: This shellfish is one of the better-known aphrodisiacs. However, not every per-

son finds seafood palatable. Oysters are high in zinc, the mineral known to increase libido. Therefore, it stands to reason that other foods high in zinc might be just as effective at inspiring romantic notions. * Pomegranates: This fruit owes its power to the antioxidants within. Antioxidants help protect the lining of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow through and in-

creasing sensitivity around the body. * Salmon: This pink fish is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that aid in the production of key hormones in the body, including estrogen and testosterone. A variety of foods that are hailed as aphrodisiacs may add some spice to Valentine’s Day celebrations.

LOWER YOUR ENERGY BILLS AND LIVE MORE COMFORTABLY Are your home energy bills high? If the answer is yes, consider participating in Home Performance with Energy Star. This national program provides comprehensive home energy assessments, incentives and low-interest loans to help homeowners reduce their energy use and costs. According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), homes that go through the program are saving 20 percent, on average, in their energy use. Equally important, the homes are more comfortable and healthier to live in. Joe Morabito was the 50,000th homeowner in New York State to benefit from NYSERDA’s Home Performance with Energy Star program. After living for six years in his 1940s two-story house in Rochester, the family was eager to reduce its energy bills and fix the hot and cold areas they felt in several rooms.

Follow these steps to take advantage of the program: Step 1: Find a local participating Home Performance with Energy Star contractor to work with. Then apply online or download an application for a comprehensive home energy assessment, which is free for most New York homeowners. New York residents can access a list of contractors by zip code and get the application at nyserda.ny.gov/comfortable. Step 2: Use the assessment results to develop a plan with your contractor that meets the unique needs of your home. Then discuss options for paying for the energy upgrades. New Yorkers can access low-cost financing and pay for the upgrades on their utility bill using their energy savings. Step 3: Once the contractor completes the work, you sign off, and your contractor is paid. Step 4: Receive 10 percent cash back incentive on eligible energy efficiency measures.

A contractor performed a whole-house energy assessment to identify the energy improvements the Morabitos should make, including adding insulation, air sealing and a programmable thermostat. Since having the work done, the family has saved 23 percent on their energy bills and Morabito says, “the house holds the heat in a lot better than it used to.”

Found in rock, soil, water, natural gas, and some building materials, radon is a radioactive gas. Exposure to radon can cause cancer. Radon can seep in through the foundation of a home or building built on radon-contaminated soil. Inhabitants of homes contaminated with radon or those who work in buildings where radon has seeped in may be at a greater risk of developing cancer than those who do not live or work in such buildings. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon is responsible for about 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year in the United States alone, and roughly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. has unsafe levels of radon.Radon is most often found in basements because the gas sinks to the lowest points in buildings. However, even those homes or buildings without basements can have unsafe levels of radon. Property owners should have their homes or buildings tested for radon, as exposure to radon does not produce any symptoms, meaning those who live and work in buildings where they are being exposed to radon won’t know unless buildings are routinely tested. Kits to test radon levels can be purchased at many hardware stores, or property owners can hire professionals to conduct tests for them.

KITCHEN REMODELING TIPS (StatePoint) Kitchen remodeling can significantly increase home value. However this can get extremely expensive. But simple kitchen fix-ups can add both value and comfort to your space. With this in mind, consider sprucing up your kitchen without breaking the bank. Don’t know where to start? Try these tips from HomeAdvisor, a leading website offering resources for home repair and improvement projects: • Fix the countertops: Changing the material of kitchen countertops is a simple way to make an impact in the room. Materials such as ceramic, laminate, granite and siltstone are all great options. Laminate is the most cost effective and granite is the most popular. • Refinish the cabinets: Even though cabinet replacement can be pricey, giving your existing cabinets a new look can come at an affordable price tag. Remove the original finish and add a new stain coat. Or paint the cabinets a bold color. Combine the paint with a crackling glaze to give the cabinets a weathered appearance. • Redo lighting: Altering the lighting in your kitchen can give it a different look and feel. Track lighting is a good aesthetic choice with many different options. Add a few task lamps to improve the functionality of the work space area. Dimmers are easy to install and can make the atmosphere of the room more versatile. • Upgrade appliances: Buying even just one or two new appliances can significantly increase the kitchen’s value. Large appliances, such as the refrigerator, oven and stove, should be upgraded first.

THE NEW WORLD OF LIGHT SWITCHES, CONTROLS AND DIMMERS

If you have decided to em-

brace the energy-smart world that is LED or CFL lightbulbs, there is something that might be hindering your use of them: your traditional lighting controls. “Traditional lighting controls don’t work very well with the new bulbs,” says Erik Anderson, national sales manager, residential construction for Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. The reason is that the physics of the new bulbs is much

different than that of incandescent bulbs. “With LEDs and CFLs, the way the light is emitted is driven by a driver or a ballast, and those don’t naturally dim.” Say you have a fixture with four bulbs; one burns out, and you decide to replace it with an LED-equivalent version. The old traditional dimmer does not know how to control that mixed load of bulbs, but new specialized

dimmers are engineered and designed to work in that situation.Wireless Lighting Controls One thing that often stops homeowners from improving the efficiency of lighting controls is wiring. Older systems used to require wires from one control to another. Now, wireless controllers allow control from spots around the room or even another room. Apps, used on either a tablet or smartphone, are also an integral part of modern-day lighting control systems. The bonus is that they also can control window treatments and in-home temperature. “It’s just a matter of swapping out existing controls for wireless versions that can communicate with each other,” says Anderson. The Next Generation of Lightbulbs M a n y homeowners still see LED as

the wave of the future, and to a certain extent it is. But lightbulbs in development will integrate control technologies in new ways. “These are smart lightbulbs that can fit into any kind of a standard socket,” says Terry McGowan, director of engineering and technology for ALA. “They connect to the Internet, and you can adjust them so they dim up and down, come on at appropriate times, change color, even flash in time with music.” As these new bulbs and controls make their way into wider acceptance in the marketplace, consumers are going to have a shift in how they think about lighting. IS YOUR HOME READY FOR A POWER OUTAGE? (StatePoint) Being prepared for winter means more than just stocking up on Vitamin C. It also means making sure your home is ready for the onslaught of cooler weather and potential power outages. Whether it’s just windy and blustery, or there’s an ice storm or blizzard, wicked weather can cause all sorts of damage or power outages. One of the most important things you can do to ensure a safe, happy and healthy winter is equip your home with a portable generator, which can serve as a useful back up during an emergency or when a power source isn’t available. Don’t forget, with great power comes great responsibility. When using a generator, keep these tips in mind: • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s operating manual and instructions before running a generator.

• Engines emit carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless poisonous gas. Don’t run a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, basements, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Locate the unit outside and direct its exhaust away from doors, windows, vents and other openings to reduce the risk of CO from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces. Install a CO detector in your home. • Connect electrically powered items to the generator using heavy-duty extension cords specifically designed for outdoor use. Ensure the wattage rating for each cord

Coiled cords can get hot, so always uncoil cords and lay them in flat open locations. Connections for standby power to a home’s electrical system must use a listed transfer switch and be installed by an electrician. The connection must isolate the generator power from the utility power. • Get the right generator size for your needs. For example, a 5500 Watt Portable Generator is ideal for powering a small appliance and a few household items, whereas the Briggs & Stratton 6250 Watt Storm Responder, a quick response generator that comes with maintenance reminders and a 25 foot generator adapter cord, can handle even more. Use free online resources, such as a generator size and wattage calculators to determine how much power you need. • Don’t wait for an emergency to operate your generator. Perform a dry run to make sure you’re familiar with its operation. Run the machine occasionally to keep the engine lubricated. • Keep a flashlight handy to find your way to your generator. Store it conveniently, covered, to keep it free of dirt and debris. • Proper generator maintenance includes several

steps. For every eight hours of operation, check the oil. Change the air cleaner every 25 hours and the oil every 50 hours. Replace the spark plug every 100 hours.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. E.P.
