THE TENT OF ABRAHAM: AM I MY BROTHER’S OR SISTER’S KEEPER?

LATHAM - Storytellers of many religious faiths are invited to share stories addressing the question, Am I My Brother’s or Sister’s Keeper?, on Thursday, January 19, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Islamic Community Center of the Capital District, 21 North Lansing Road, Schenectady 12304. The annual “Tent of Abraham” program will begin at 6:00 pm with a vegetarian pot luck meal. You’re invited to bring a dish to share. Storytelling will run from 7:15 to 8:45 pm. Mussarat Chaudhry, Sandy Schuman and Anne Snyder will start the telling with stories from their respective Muslim, Jewish and Christian faith traditions, and others will be invited to add their own stories. Come share your own traditional or personal stories related to the theme or just come to listen. Either way, you will be warmly welcomed! The “Tent of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar” program was initiated in 2006 as a way to celebrate the confluence of holy days at that time, and continues to help build bridges. It is a popular program of the Interfaith Story Circle of the Tri-City Area [www.interfaithstory.org/tricity] that was founded in 1993 to promote understanding, respect and friendship among people of diverse cultures, ethical traditions and religions by facilitating the sharing of stories. SENEGALESE & FRENCH FILM

TROY - “Guelwaar” from Senegalese writer/director Ousmane Sembene: Saturday, January 21, 1 pm, free at the Troy Public Library, presented by La Fédération franco-américaine du New York. “Ousmane Sembene (1923-2007) was the first film director from an African country to achieve international recognition. His film Guelwaar is about Africans, by Africans, shot on location in modern Africa. Guelwaar is the name of a district leader in Senegal who is dead at the beginning of the film. His family gathers; but then there’s a problem: his body disappears from the morgue. Sembene uses the search for the body to showcase community discussions, ways people live, their values and religious views, and how their traditional ways interact with the newer forms of government” (sources: IMDb & Roger Ebert, 4/22/94). One reviewer called it a “beautifully observed human comedy.” (1992, 1hr55min, in Wolof and French with English subtitles) As a courtesy, please call the Troy Public Library at (518) 274-7071 to reserve a seat. Follow La Fédération franco-américaine du New York on Facebook and the Web.

LOVING HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL ANIMALS

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all it’s dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month. Searching for that special dog? Come join us at an adoption clinic at Latham Farms PETSMART the first and second Saturday of each month and at Clifton Park PETSMART the fourth Saturday of each month. Questions? Contact Jennifer 664-3450. Our adoptable dogs include: Adult Chihuahua Mixes, Basenji Mix, Beagles, Cockapoo, Corgi Mix, Dachshund Mix, Hound Mix, Jack Russell Terrier (Broken Coated), Long Haired Chihuahua Mix, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Cattle Dog Mix, Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Shih Poo, Shih Tzu, Spaniel Mix, Spitz Mix, Toy Manchester Terrier, Toy Poodle, and many other small dogs. New dogs join our rescue weekly.

SENIORS HELPING SENIORS

CAPITAL DISTRICT - For the past twenty years, Umbrella of the Capital District has been helping seniors and people with disabilities care for their homes. We recruit active retirees to provide a wide range of handy person services for others in the community who are less able. For elderly homeowners, routine tasks like housekeeping, grocery shopping, lawn care and minor repairs can present a real challenge. Umbrella’s mission is to address that need, and help people continue to live safely and independently in their homes and communities. Some workers earn $12.00/hr and some volunteer their time. All do what they like and are good at, and make a real difference in the lives of the people they help. Interested? Call 346-5249 or visit our web site at www.theumbrella.org.

CLIFTON PARK – Jewish Women’s Circle invites women to join together for Torah and Tea at 7:30pm on Wednesdays. The Five Books of Moses—the Torah—is quite simply the most widely read, most influential literary work in all of human history. Since its first appearance in a blaze of Divine revelation on Mount Sinai over 3300 years ago, the Torah and its teachings have provoked inspired inquiry to discover its infinitely-layered designs and meanings. This women’s Torah series brings you this tradition of classical Jewish learning in a series of clear and engaging weekly classes. Probing the ideas and issues presented in each week’s Torah portion, these lessons offer timely lessons for living-from the most timeless of all texts.

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS

Purchasing a house or property is about more than setting up a home. Although quite a number of people buy real estate to establish their future, long-term abodes, many others recognize the potentially lucrative investment that lies within a real estate purchase. Despite the ups and downs of the economy, real estate has become a common investment vehicle — one that has plenty of potential for making big gains for those who are willing to put in the effort. According to the experts at Entrepreneur, even in a bad economy, real estate investments will usually fare better than stocks. Real estate also continues to appreciate despite the occasional economical slowdown. Like any other endeavor, there is a right and a wrong way to go about investing in real estate. Novices may not know where to begin their first forays into the real estate market as investors, even if they already own their own homes. Buying a property as an investment is an entirely different animal than buying a home to establish a residence. However, with the right guidance, anyone can dabble in real estate.

for a fast profit may no longer be here. However, real estate can provide a steady stream of long-term income. Understand what you hope to achieve by investing. If it’s to become an overnight millionaire, you may be looking at the wrong investment vehicle in real estate.

• Establish a plan. New investors who do not have a plan in place will likely spend too much or have more setbacks than others who have planned accordingly. When investing in real estate, it’s more about the bottom line than the property itself. According to Springboard Academy, a real estate academy for investors, look for motivated sellers and stick to a set purchase price. Try to make offers on a variety of properties that work in your financial favor. And know what you want to do with the property (i.e., renovate and sell, remove and rebuild, or rehab and rent) before you buy. Fit the house to the plan, and not vice-versa.

• Start small. If this is your first time out there, stick with properties that will turnover quickly. Research areas in and around urban centers or close to transportation and shopping. A good starter property is a small

house or a condominium that can be refurbished and then rented. Rental properties offer steady sources of income when renters are properly vetted, offers Investopedia, an investment resource. • Look at many different properties. Become an expert by learning as much as you can about what is out there. Attend open houses; look for vacant/unattractive properties; scour the classifieds in your local paper; or put the word out there that you’re interested in buying a property. Only look at properties that have motivated sellers, because then you’ll get closest to the price you want to pay. And don’t forget to research the area and the home turnover rate for the specific area where you are looking. Don’t make assumptions that a property will appreciate without doing your homework. Real estate can be a worthy investment opportunity. With research, a plan and the right price, just about anyone can be a real estate investor.
