LATHAM - Community Resource Federal Credit Union’s employees presented Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (IPH) with a check for $3,850 on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Credit Union’s 20 Wade Road, Latham office. The employees previously distributed $750 to IPH by supporting its Taste of Albany event and Summer Youth Program. The employees raised the funds through events such as a bake sale, Haunted Asylum, donor card sale, and a calendar raffle. “Community Resource Federal Credit Union has been a strong community partner, working year-round to raise funds that directly support the Sheridan Hollow Drop-In Center,” said Eric Guzman, Marketing Coordinator for Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. “The employees have also volunteered their time working with the kids in the Summer Youth Program and serving the holiday meal,” he added. IPH’s Sheridan Hollow Drop-In Center has reached capacity. To keep up with the community need, IPH plans to purchase a new building in the same neighborhood in 2014. At the same time, the shelter will expand its programs, which encourage self-sufficiency, empowerment, and stability amongst homeless and low-income families.

EMPLOYEES RAISE $4,600 FOR MOHAWK HUDSON HUMANE SOCIETY

LATHAM - Community Resource Federal Credit Union’s employees presented the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society with a check for $4,600 on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Credit Union’s 20 Wade Road, Latham office. The employees raised the funds through events such as a bake sale, Haunted Asylum, donor card sale, calendar raffle, and Pet Photos with Santa. “The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society does not receive government funding. So, donations like ours are very important because the shelter needs financial support from individuals and businesses in order to stay in business,” said Wendy Meola, Director of Marketing at Community Resource Federal Credit Union. Community Resource’s employees also held an annual bottle drive on May 18 during which 8,000 bottles were collected for the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. In 2013, the shelter raised $100,000 from bottle redemption.

CDTA TEAMS UP WITH UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORY PROJECT RENSSELAER - CDTA, manager of the Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station, has teamed up with Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region in order to bring local Underground Railroad history to the public. Located in the main concourse of the Rensselaer Train Station, a seven foot tall, three sided kiosk contains information and visual images of people, places and events related to this significant chapter in the history of Albany, the Capital Region, and New York State. Based upon the research conducted by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, historians and co-founders of Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc., Albany and the Capital Region were hotbeds of abolitionist activity prior to the Civil War. According to Paul Stewart, “Letters, narratives, newspaper articles, and broadsides tell us a much more complex and comprehensive story of Underground Railroad activity than we routinely hear about. They provide us with a new interpretation of a very old story.” The Rensselaer Amtrak Train Station will host the kiosk through February 2014.

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 5 Year Old Female, Brown/Black

Scarlet

Domestic Medium Hair Mix, 2 Year Old Female, Brown/Orange Hi there, I’m Scarlet. I have a torbie coat - that means tiger with orange. My fur is medium length and real soft. My former family had young kids and a dog, and I got along fine with everybody. Then a new baby came along, and became allergic to me. So here I am, and I’m a little confused by this big change in my life. That’s why I seem a little shy. But I like to be petted and after I get to know you I get over my shyness. You can brush me and that will help us bond, and keep my coat looking its best. I’m still young and playful so we can have lots of fun together.

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costello, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which features historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BUILDER

(MS) -- Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same.

Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own.

* Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for istself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off.

* Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.

* Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be.

* Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home.

More information on selecting the right builder is available online at www.pace2000homes.com.
