Even the most serene streams or isolated rivers can contain harmful bacteria, so a portable water filter is a necessity. * Compass: Many of us have grown to rely on our smartphone apps to get us from point A to point B. Aging Can Impair Driving Ability The number of drivers 70 and over is predicted to triple in North America over the next 20 years. Research indicates that the older a person is, the higher the risk of driver accident or fatality. The risk posed by older drivers and the inevitable increase in older drivers on the road over the next two decades has sparked debate as to whether or not such drivers should be reexamined to ensure safety on the road?

In 2003, an 86-year-old man unintentionally killed 10 people and injured more than 70 when he drove his car through a crowded farmer’s market in Santa Monica, Calif. In 2010, a 72-year-old Connecticut man faced vehicular manslaughter charges for allegedly striking and killing a motorcyclist. In 2012, an elderly man in Buffalo, N.Y. caused an accident resulting in three fatalities when he traveled in the wrong direction on the New York State Thruway. Very frequently the local news is peppered with reports of elderly drivers causing serious accidents. Some wonder if more stringent requirements for elderly drivers would help the situation. Thirty-three states presently have legislation in place to ensure drivers can retain driving privileges once they reach a certain age. It’s important to note that, according to the National Safety Council, drivers over the age of 75 account for only 3.3 percent of accidents in the United States. Drivers age 25 to 34 account for the largest number of accidents, at nearly 20 percent. Some argue that these findings do not paint an accurate picture because senior drivers spend far less time behind the wheel and log fewer miles than younger drivers, reducing the chance for accidents. Though the debate about older drivers figures to remain a hot topic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that aging can affect drivers in a number of ways. The physical and mental changes that accompany aging can have a profound impact on a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Reaction times may be slower, hearing and vision loss may affect driver awareness, loss of muscle strength and flexibility can make steering more difficult and medication can impair focus and/or concentration. Many senior centers and organizations offer programs that allow elderly drivers to brush up on their skills behind the wheel. Drivers also can contact their insurance companies to see if there are any sponsored classes they can take to reassess their skills and possibly lower their insurance premiums. AAA offers a Driver Improvement course and suggests seniors find a car they can safely and comfortably operate. AAA also offers Roadwise Rx, a free online tool that provides confidential, individualized feedback about medication side effects and how these drugs may impact drivers on the road. AARP also offers a Driver Safety course. It also is important that senior drivers and their families familiarize themselves with local legislation to determine if driver refresher courses or retesting are necessary for older drivers to remain behind the wheel.

Sedans have long been a popular option among drivers. Sedans are popular family cars and are frequently seen as safer alternatives to compacts and coupes. Each year, Consumer Reports and Motor Trend rate the best vehicles in each class, and the 2014 list includes some surprising No Appointment sedans. Necessary For the first time in 20 years, an American car has topped the list of the best-rated sedans, acRoutes 4 & 32, Mechanicville (at Jack Byrne) cording to Consumer Reports. The Chevrolet Impala has seized the top-rated spot away from the OPEN: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm; Saturday 8am-Noon Japanese and European manufacturers who have dominated the list for two decades. The 2014 Impala scored a 95 on a scale of 100. Many car enthusiasts and trend forecasters say this rating is telling of General Motors’ efforts to improve consumers’ perception of the brand. In one year, the Impala went from one of the worst vehicles in the category to the best. The Consumer Reports ratings include road test results as well as safety information. Reliability and owner satisfaction ratings provided on older cars are based on surveys from millions of subscribers. When rating sedans, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, accident avoidance, overall MPG, and other qualities each factor into a vehicle’s overall score. Sedans are categorized based on size, with vehicles broken down into small, midsize and large categories. Sedans also are classified by their styles, such as upscale, luxury, sports, and even fuel-efficient. Overall, sedans remain a popular choice because they can provide a good balance of cost, comfort and efficiency. Many sedans are roomy, quiet and comfortable, making them ideal family vehicles for those who do not want the girth or potentially bumpy ride of a truck.

Holly And Mistletoe Are Symbols Of Christmas

“Oh, by gosh, by golly it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides covered in snow.” As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths. In addition, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss. While these elements of celebrations are now incorporated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have very different origins.

Holly

Holly has been used since the days of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinter festivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits away. The ancient Romans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place of honor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn. To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the tradition of hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses. Eventually as the number of Christians grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and more associated with Christians and Christmas. Some people have inferred that holly and its prickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with the red berries representing blood.

Mistletoe

Mistletoe was once held sacred by the Norse, Celtic Druids and North American Indians. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees. Heavy infestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees. In cultures across pre-Christian Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertility and vitality). The plant also was thought to be a symbol of peace, and anyone standing below it should receive tokens of affection. When enemies met beneath mistletoe, they had to lay down their weapons and observe a truce until the next day. This is how the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe likely began, and why a ball of mistletoe is now hung in homes during Christmas, a season of peace and affection. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week India Terrier, Pit Bull Mix, 3 Year Old Female, Grey/White

Max Terrier, Pit Bull Mix, 6 Year Old Male, White/Tan Hi Everyone, I’m Max. My owners were moving and couldn’t take me with them so now I’m here looking for a new family to love. My skin might look a little rough right now but it’s getting better every day! I’m good with other dogs and I even lived with a cat and older kids. I really love rawhides and bones and if you give me one I will settle down right next to you and entertain myself. With all those great qualities, I really am a catch!

Chocolate Initials - A Dutch Tradition SCHUYLERVILLE - Chocolate Initials - A Dutch Tradition! In the 16th and 17th centuries, according to old Germanic traditions, letters made from pastry were presented to children at birth as a symbol of good fortune and this became a part of the St Nicholas legend in the 19th century. A bread dough letter was used to identify whose gifts were hidden in a shoe or under a sheet. Then the children had to find their initial in order to see what else St Nicholas had left for them. When the Dutch, famous as traders, brought home cocoa beans along with coffee, tea and spices from exotic lands, their love affair with chocolate began. They learned to make some of the finest chocolate in the world. Soon, the St Nicholas’ letters were made from chocolate and the tradition continues to this day. The Dutch chocolate makers keep St Nicholas supplied with enough chocolate letters for every household in Holland – and even have plenty for us! The Dutch Tradition of Chocolate Initials continues! Orders for Chocolate Letters are now being taken for delivery in the first week of December and throughout the Holiday Season. Chocolate Letters, in either Dark, Milk Chocolate, 3 x 4 inches in size, come individually packaged in a festive box. The cost is $6.00 each and can be ordered by calling or emailing, Chamber Pres., Dave Roberts, 518-695- 6923 or drobert1@nycap. rr.com, also Marie Foster, 518-695-5609, fostermr@verizon. net Please make checks payable to the Schuylerville Area Chamber of Commerce. Good fortune to all who receive the first letter of their first name in Chocolate! Delicious!

Hello my name is Oki. I am a 5 year old neutered Boxer. I am housebroken, good with older kids, and other dogs. I have never been around cats. I am very cautious of young children, as I had been teased by them and poked in the eye. I am a very sweet boy. Hello my name is Izzy. I am a 3 year old spayed Catahoula Leopard Mix. I am housebroken and good with kids. I am not good with other animals, so I need to be the only animal in the home. I am a very active girl, so I need daily exercise. I was brought to the shelter because my owners didn't have the time to walk me. This is Snoopy. She is a 5 year old declawed spayed female. Snoopy is a special girl who needs a special home. She is litter box trained and likes other cats. She is a lap cat and likes to lick/groom your hand or hair. If she does this, then she really likes you. She also does not like loud noises and would do best in a quiet home. Snoopy would like to go to a senior house where she can be the queen and love you forever. She is nervous until she gets to know you. Hello my name is Lily. I am a 4 year old spayed female. I am litter box trained, good with kids, other cats, and dogs. I was brought to the shelter because I was left behind by my former owner. I was staying with a new family, but their cat didn't get along with me.
