(NAPSI)—For hundreds of years, the Christmas tree has been a popular symbol of the holidays. Most people celebrated with a real tree until the early 2000s, when artificial trees began to gain in popularity for their practicality. Advances in technology let designers make artificial trees that are both incredibly realistic and durable.

1569 Halfmoon Parkway Rt. 9, Clifton Park (Next To Walmart)

In 2015, 81 percent of the more than 99 million households that displayed a Christmas tree used an artificial tree, according to the survey from the American Christmas Tree Association, conducted by Nielsen. Only 19 percent of American homes displaying Christmas trees last year used real trees. Artificial trees don’t need water, they don’t shed and they can last for years, saving you money over time. If you’re looking for an artificial tree this year, go online to find the widest selection and best quality for your budget, then consider these tips. • Size: Artificial trees are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit just about any home. Even lower-priced brands offer full (traditional), narrow and “pencil” trees in sizes ranging from 4 to 10 feet. Measure carefully and I IENA AINT ARDWARE consider a “flatback” or corner tree if space is very tight. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Christmas carols and festive songs help make the holidays complete by setting the mood for the festivities to come. Songs resonate differently with people during the holiday season. For example, some celebrants find certain holiday tunes or lyrics especially poignant. Those who might be missing home or planning on visiting friends and relatives who live far away during the holiday season often find the words to “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays,” are an accurate portrayal of the sentiments of holiday traveling. Composed by Robert Allen, with lyrics by Al Stillman, “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” was published in 1954. The best-known recordings of the song are by Perry Como, who recorded it twice — once in 1954 and then again in 1959 with a different musical arrangement. The first version reached #8 on the Billboard magazine chart in the United States. The Carpenters recorded another popular version of the song for their 1984 album, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.” Nora Jones and Cyndi Lauper also recorded a duet version of the song in 2011.

Holiday Special

Like other Jewish holidays, Chanukah is shrouded in tradition. Chanukah means “dedication” or “induction” in Hebrew. The holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev and can occur in either November or December. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah includes menorah displays, traditional foods and games and songs. Chanukah rose to prominence thanks in part to the story of faith and miracle behind its inception. Antiochus IV was a Greek sovereign in control of the region of Syria, Egypt and Palestine, where many Jews resided. Antiochus began to oppress the Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion and desecrating the Jewish Temple. Opposition to Antiochus grew, and a group led by Mattathias the Hasmonean and his son, Judah Maccabee, took on the Syrian army. They were successful in their efforts to combat religious oppression, and the Temple was subsequently rededicated. The Talmud states that, at the time of the rededication, there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Greeks. This posed a problem because oil was needed to burn the Temple menorah throughout the night every night. However, there was only enough left for one night’s illumination. Miraculous-

miracle.

Because Chanukah is about the miracle of the oil and the lasting flame, oil and candles factor heavily in the holiday. A nine-armed menorah called the hanukiah is lit, and one candle is lit on each of the eight nights of the celebration. The last branch of the candelabra holds the shamash (servant) candle. The organization Reform Judaism says the traditional song “Ma’oz Tzur (Rock of Ages)” is sung after the lighting of the candles each night and at other times throughout the holiday. Foods fried in oil, including latkes and jelly doughnuts, are consumed as well. Celebrants play games with a dreidel, a German-based spinning top, and giving to charity is encouraged. Chanukah is one of the few times of the year when rabbis permit games of chance. The letters atop the dreidel stand for the first letter of each word in the Hebrew statement “Neis gadol hayah sham,” which translates to “A great miracle happened there,” and refers to the defeat of the Syrian army and the rededication of the Temple.

CELEBRATING MIDNIGHT MASS

Many families have their own unique holiday traditions, but one tradition that unites millions of Christians all over the world is the celebration of Midnight Mass. In many parishes, Midnight Mass is the first celebration of Christmas Mass. The origins of Midnight Mass are not exactly known. However, certain monks and nuns attended liturgical services at midnight every day in ancient times, and the Christmas Midnight Mass very well may have been adopted from these practices. Regardless of the basis behind the celebration, it can be a breathtaking and emotional service thanks to the memorable passages read and the inclusion of church choirs. Many Midnight Mass celebrants feel the Mass serves as an impressive reminder as to the true meaning of Christmas.

HELP HOLIDAY GIFTS ARRIVE ON TIME

The end of December is prime shopping and shipping time for holiday gifts. Shipping giant UPS calls this time of the year its peak season, and FedEx and the United States Postal Service also cite the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day as some of their busiest weeks. Jingling bells and Christmas carols once were the foremost sounds of the season, but now those noises have been replaced by the sounds of conveyor belts, trucks and airplanes rushing to get packages to their destinations. According to research firm Forrester, online sales now account for 10 percent of all shopping and 15 percent of holiday shopping. USPS expects to deliver roughly 15 billion letters, cards and packages during the holiday season. While the postal service and the major pack-and-ship companies are incredibly reliable, shoppers can take the following steps to further ensure their gifts arrive on time. • Shop in-store. Choose off-peak hours, such as early morning and late evening, to visit

brick-and-mortar stores. The crowds will not be too large, and you will have the added peace of mind knowing that you don’t need to wait for gifts to arrive via the mail. If you like the convenience of online shopping, shop online but take advantage of in-store pick-up when available. If items are in stock, this can save you the hassle of making your way through crowded stores. • Follow cut-off dates. Many online retailers will post

“purchase by” dates to ensure specific delivery times. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these dates so your items will arrive on time. If time is ticking away, you may have to pay more for expedited shipping.

• Avoid backordered items. Popular gifts may sell out quickly, and retailers could put you on backorder lists. Research similar products as potential backups should your primary choice be on backorder.

• Shop well in advance. Shopping early is the best way to ensure gifts arrive on time. Shopping early also gives shoppers time to make exchanges in the event an item is not up to par or is damaged. Thanks to the popularity and prevalence of online shopping, it has become very important for shoppers to take shipping concerns into consideration before making purchases.

DID YOU KNOW?

Pets are cherished members of the family, and many pet parents choose to purchase gifts for their animal companions. According to a survey conducted by Rover.com, 95 percent of pet owners have purchased Christmas gifts for their pets. While Christmas is the most popular holiday to buy presents for pets, pet owners also buy presents for their pets’ birthdays and for Valentine’s Day.

REINDEER AND CARIBOU ARE SIMILAR, BUT NOT THE SAME

Reindeer are symbols of the holiday season. Legend states these antlered animals have a busy evening come December 24 — helping Santa Claus pull a sleigh weighed down by toys for the world’s children. Why does Santa choose reindeer when caribou may be equally qualified for the job? It may be due to their greater history of domestication. Although the terms “reindeer” and “caribou” are frequently used interchangeably, leading many people to assume they are the same creature, recent genetic mapping published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows caribou and reindeer are actually different animals. The journal determined that these mammals are quite similar and actually share the same scientific name, Rangifer tarandus, but they are only closely related cousins. Reindeer may be slightly smaller and are generally more domesticated than caribou. Some people of the Nenet group in Russia keep reindeer for pets. The following are some other similarities and differences, courtesy of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. • Reindeer are shorter, stouter and more sedentary than the long-legged caribou. • Caribou migrate longer distances than reindeer between wintering grounds and calving areas. • Reindeer have thicker, denser fur than caribou. Both have unique hair in their fur that trap air and provide extra insulation. • Both male and female reindeer and caribou grow antlers. However, female reindeer antlers grow larger than those of female caribou. • Reindeer calves are born at the end of April and caribou calves at the end of May. • Both animals have hooves that can be used as snowshoes for walking on the snow and for digging. • Only in North America are wild Rangifer referred to as cari-

• Reindeer have been herded for years throughout Alaska and some parts of Canada for their meat. However, caribou are largely wild animals that roam freely. As a result, caribou are hunted in the wild. Reindeer may get all the glory come the holiday season, but caribou are equally impressive animals. These large mammals provide food and other materials for survival to those who live in cold climates across the world.

KWANZAA DECORATING TIPS

Kwanzaa is celebrated by millions of people every year. Individuals of all ages take part in the festivities, which were established in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Karenga, prompted by the Watts riots in Los Angeles, sought ways to bring African Americans together as a community, and Kwanzaa was born. Kwanzaa can be a fun opportunity to gather with friends and family in the heart of the holiday season. Kwanzaa, which celebrates the symbolism and traditions of African American culture, begins on December 26 and lasts through January 1. There are many components of Kwanzaa celebrations, and decorating for the holiday remains an important way to demonstrate spirit. Celebrants can start by decorating with the traditional colors of

red, green and black. These can be displayed in fabrics used in the home, clothing, linens, and other decor. The Bendera Ya Taifa, or the traditional Kwanzaa flag, can be hung and serve as the holiday’s centerpiece.

Celebrants also will want to decorate with the seven symbols of the holiday, or Nguzo Saba: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). Posters, crafts or photographs can be used to symbolize these seven principles.

Another component of Kwanzaa is a seven-branched candleholder known as the “kinara.” The kinara represents African ancestors and should be displayed on a table or in another prominent area of the home. Light seven candles to represent the seven principles.

Articles of African culture, such as masks or artwork, can complete Kwanzaa decor. Cultural artifacts can be tied into the creative aspect of the holiday. Celebrants might want to craft their own masks or African-inspired artwork to use throughout the holiday.

Families come together during Kwanzaa to celebrate African American culture and unity. Decorating for the holiday is a great way for African Americans to exhibit pride in their heritage.

feel pressured to overindulge with alcohol on New Year’s Eve, but men and women should be responsible with regard to their alcohol consumption. Overconsumption of alcohol makes it difficult for men and women to stay alert, and that loss of alertness can be difficult to manage on nights as hectic as New Year’s Eve. While it’s acceptable for men and women of legal drinking age to raise a glass of champagne at midnight, it’s best to limit alcohol consumption throughout the festivities so the party is memorable for all the right reasons.

• Be a responsible host. When hosting a New Year’s Eve party, hosts must prioritize the safety of their guests. Make sure guests don’t drink too much, which can leave hosts open to criminal or civil action should guests leave their home and cause an accident. Serve plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages so guests who are drinking have something in their systems other than alcohol. Schedule things to do throughout the night so guests have more to do than drink alcohol. In addition, make room for potential overnight guests should someone be incapable of driving home at the end of the night. Keep contact information for local taxis or shuttle services readily available so guests know they don’t have to drive themselves home. New Year’s Eve is a festive night, but one where safety needs to be as big a priority as having a good time.

NEW YEAR’S EVE SAFETY TIPS

New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Many people spend the final moments of the year celebrating with family and friends. As joyous as such celebrations tend to be, it’s important that New Year’s revelers keep certain safety precautions in mind when celebrating the end of one year and the dawn of the next. • Arrange for transportation in advance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. • Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career. • Use your contacts to your advantage. Even if much of your experience won’t transfer to your new career, your professional network might still be valuable to a prospective employer. The longer you have been working the larger your professional network likely is, so highlight those contacts in your interview and illustrate how you can put them to good use should you be hired. • Showcase how you have adapted in the past. Much of the business world moves at a breakneck pace. That pace has become even faster thanks to advancements in technology that routinely affect how businesses operate. Even if you have never before changed careers, that does not mean you have not adapted to change. Make a

list of the changes your employers have instituted throughout your career, highlighting how you adapted to those changes and benefitted from them in their aftermath. • Remain positive throughout the interview. Even if you are changing careers because you’re unhappy and/or unfulfilled in your present line of work, avoid badmouthing that industry and your past employers. Doing so will only reflect negatively on you and raise a red flag with prospective employers. Instead, explain your reasons for pursuing a new career path in terms that excite potential employers about your candidate.

ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY

Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion.

Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.

Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractor-trailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles.
