The Gift of Life Burnt Hills Oratorio Society

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Combine the vocal arts with the visual arts and you have an inspiring performance that captures the promise of springtime. The Burnt Hills Oratorio Society, a 60-voice choir, offers three dramatic musical presentations that explore “The Gift of Life.” The musical text, which spans a spectrum of moods, will be enriched by projected artwork from local artists. The main choral work will be John Rutter’s “The Gift of Life,” a celebration of Life and the Living Earth. Also offered is a one-act chamber opera that spins a tale of Death and Rebirth, with guest soloists from Auriel Camerata, and an Olde English tale of infidelity and revenge scored for an all-male chorus. The performance is Friday, June 15, 2018, 7:30 pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville NY 12302. Tickets can be purchased at bhos.us or at the door the day of the performance. Call 518-416-4060 for more information.

Destroyer Escort Day At USS SLATER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The third Saturday in June is recognized and celebrated nationwide as Destroyer Escort Day. On Saturday, June 16th, we will pay homage to the Destroyer Escort sailors killed in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War years and to the fifteen Destroyer Escorts lost in action. There will be a ceremony to honor and remember Destroyer Escorts and their sailors at 9:00 a.m. at USS SLATER. Over 150,000 men served in destroyer escorts during World War II and through the Vietnam War. Their numbers are dwindling each year, but several of these veterans will be present to remember their lost shipmates. USS SLATER, a National Historic Landmark, is the last DE afloat in America. She is a fitting tribute to so many sailors who gave so much for their country in its time of need. The first Destroyer Escort Day was held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on June 16, 1990. Destroyer Escort Day is celebrated by the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum and all of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association Chapters nationwide. Each Chapter prepares and conducts its own program to honor the ships and crews. The Albany ceremony is sponsored by USS SLATER Volunteers. USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Regular public hours for the ship are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is charged. Call 518-431-1943 for more information or visit the website at www.ussslater.org.

SUMMER LAWN CARE

All spring long we’ve had to mow our lawns at least once a week to keep up with its rapid growth. Like most of you, I’ve been mowing it low to try and gain some time between mowing. When the heat and dryness of summer arrive, we need to adjust our attitude and our mowing height. To help your lawn survive dry summer weather let it get taller… as tall as your lawn mower will adjust…4” to 5”. If you continue with the low mow, the sun Stop the low mow during hot summer will heat the soil to temperatures that will kill weather. the roots of your grass. A lawn left long shades the soil. You may like the look of a shorter lawn, but if the soil temperature goes above 85° to 90° for three consecutive days, the root system dies. Once that happens, you’re looking at a lot of grass seed and a lot of watering in late summer and early fall to repair the lawn There comes a time when you just must water. Traditional wisdom tells us that, for a lawn to remain healthy, it needs an inch of water Raise your mower blade to its highest setting. a week. What you need to know, though, is that the lawn needs that inch of water all at once to get any real benefit from it. Water your lawn heavily then not at all for a week. With a limited amount of water available to most of us, we try and move the sprinkler around the yard to make sure that we get the whole lawn watered at one time without any regard to whether it is getting enough water for more than temporary relief. If you have watering restrictions that only allow you to water every other day for two An inch of water once a week. hours, let your lawn sprinkler soak one area for the full two hours. When your next watering opportunity arrives, move the lawn sprinkler to the next section and soak it with at least an inch of water. Folks with underground sprinkling systems need to follow the same advice. Set them up to soak one zone each day with an inch of water then do a different zone the next day. By putting an inch of water on the lawn, you’ll be soaking the soil to a depth of 6”. Water at this depth in the soil will not evaporate quickly, and it’s where the roots of the grass are located so it can be absorbed. Quickly spraying the lawn might perk it up briefly but most of that moisture is lost to evaporation and can never penetrate deep into the soil to get to the roots. At this point folks will ask, “How long do I need to leave the sprinkler on to put on an inch of water?” Since we all have different lawn sprinklers and water pressure, I can’t answer that question. This is something we must all determine on our own. You simply need to take a small, empty tuna fish can and place it in the area you’re watering. Don’t shut it off until it is full. Make a mental note of how long it took, and you’ll always know how long your setup takes to put out an inch of water. That’s it. Water deeply then take a break for a week. Thanks for the read.

7 Steps To Leave A Job Gracefully

Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.

People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivataccucarehomehealthservices.com ing a job change, leaving a place of employment can F/T Carpentry helper $14/hr. elicit various emotions, inMust have experience, relicluding some that may conable, trustworthy. Must have tribute to negative thoughts transportation (518) 461-8358 about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road. The following are seven strategies people can employ as they leave their jobs to ensure those exits go as smoothly as possible. 1. Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-beformer employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network. 2. Play by the rules. Your employer may have a plan in place for how the company prefers resignations to be handled. The standard two- to three-week’s notice is a guideline. Visit with human resources if you need more information, such as whether or not a resignation letter or other documentation is required. 3. Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal

chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-to-face communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter. 4. Announce your departure. Work collectively with your manager and other higher-ups to decide how to best handle the announcement to other employees. 5. Train your replacement and prepare final assignments. Volunteer to train or assist with getting your replacement set up. If you have any outstanding projects or documents, be sure to tie up any loose ends before leaving. Leave behind instructions or a guidebook if you think it will help your replacement perform their duties more effectively. 6. Keep the momentum. It can be tempting to phone it in as you near departure day, but this is inadvisable. Do your job to the best of your ability up until you say your goodbyes. 7. Pack on your own time. Cause as little disruption as possible by packing belongings before or after office hours. Respect the working environment, recognizing that your coworkers still need to get their jobs done. Quitting a job can be full of mixed emotions. Just be sure to time it correctly and leave in as positive a way as possible to maintain a strong professional network.
