Did You Know?

Toyota has long dominated the North American automotive market. With more than 40 million sold across the globe, the Toyota Corolla, introduced in 1966, has been dubbed the best-selling car of all time, according to Autoblog. By 1974, the Corolla became the best-selling car in the world. Car and Driver says that other Toyota models, including the RAV4 and Camry, also are consumer favorites.

Did You Know?

Cars and trucks can benefit greatly from clean air filters. Many drivers are aware of the need to change the oil in their vehicles according to the intervals designated in their owners’ manuals, but few may be aware of the many benefits of changing air filters. One such benefit pertains to fuel efficiency. The automotive website CarsDirect.com notes that studies have shown that changing clogged air filters can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent and save drivers as much as 15 cents per gallon of fuel. Clean air filters also can benefit the environment. When vehicle air filters are clogged, air flow to the engine is reduced, adversely affecting vehicle emissions. Clean filters increase air flow to the engine, reducing vehicle emissions as a result. Clean air filters also can help drivers get more out of their vehicle investments. Designed to trap dirt and debris, clean air filters prolong engine life by preventing such particles from damaging engine components. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals for air filter replacement guidelines, but manufacturers generally advise drivers change their air filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Such a repair is inexpensive but can go a long way toward ensuring vehicles operate as efficiently as possible.

Opera Saratoga delights audiences every summer with beautiful music and dazzling sets. An internationally recognized opera festival, Opera Saratoga has been delighting audiences since July 5, 1962 when it first performed at the Diamond Point Theater in Lake George as the Lake George Opera. Larry Edelson, the artistic and general director of Opera Saratoga since July 2014, hopes Capital District residents know there is world class opera in their backyard. “Opera Saratoga is a real treasure,” he says. Opera Saratoga kicks off its summer festival opera performances on June 29, 2018 at the intimate Spa Little Theater nestled within the Saratoga Spa State Park. Edelson promises that each of the festival’s shows will be exciting for audiences. “Each performance is an up close and personal experience with opera,” he said. This season, each opera is sung in English – the productions will have something for everyone. “The Merry Widow” is one of the most popular operettas in the world. Despite its popularity, Opera Saratoga hasn’t performed it in more than 30 years. The operetta is a beautiful marriage of comedy and dancing. “This is a really fun show and is perfect for families and first time opera-goers,” Edelson said. “Rocking Horse Winner” and “Vinkensport” (The Finch Opera) is advertised as being a double bill. “Rocking Horse Winner” will have its American premiere at the summer festival. It is also Opera Saratoga’s first horseracing themed opera. “Opera Saratoga calls Saratoga home and having an opera with horseracing theme makes perfect sense,” Edelson said. “The opera is all about luck and chance.” The second half of the performance will be the world premiere of “Vinkensport.” According to Edelson, “Vinkesport” combats the elitist connotation of opera, especially for first-time audience members. The opera explores the nature of competition and the need to win through the frame of an obscure Flemish folk sport, Finch-Sitting. “How far will someone go to win a competition? This is a piece that will really resonate with audiences,” he said. “It will also entertain them!” Almost 70 years ago, “The Consul” premiered on Broadway to rave reviews and won both the Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. It is a riveting opera that still delivers a punch as powerful and timely as its subject matter: the struggle for freedom against oppression, and the maddening nature of unrelenting bureaucracy. “It is a very topical performance that speak to our humanity,” Edelson said. “It shines light on the people who are suffering, including immigrants and refugees, and their challenges.” Edelson believes audiences will be moved by this opera not only because of its beautiful music but because the story is so haunting. In addition to the opera productions, Opera Saratoga also offers a robust local concert series during the Summer Festival. “It is important for us to be connected to the community we serve,” Edelson said. The Stars of Tomorrow, hosted by Skidmore College on May 26 at 7:30 p.m., is a free show kicking off the summer season. The concert will feature 24 singers from around the country who have been selected from almost 1,000 applicants to be members of Opera Saratoga’s prestigious Young Artist Program.  Presented in partnership with the Mansion Inn in Rock City Falls, on June 10 Opera Saratoga will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial birthday in two concerts, at 2pm and 7:30pm. Members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program will celebrate the legacy of one of America’s most beloved composers, who brought us masterpieces including “West Side Story,” “Candide,” and “Wonderful Town.” General admission is $60 per ticket. Seating is cabaret style tables, and is strictly limited for these two concerts. Tapas and drinks, inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s theatrical works and specially concocted by The Mansion Inn’s Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Rick Bieber, will be available for purchase.  On June 17 at 7 p.m., join Opera Saratoga at the Massry Center for the Arts at College of St. Rose in Albany for a free concert titled Refugee Voices. Building on themes explored in this summer’s production of “The Consul,” Opera Saratoga presents a special concert featuring music by refugee composers - artists who had to flee from their home countries due to religious or political persecution. Opera and song by Gaetano Donizetti, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Darius Milhaud, Paul Hindemith, Erich Koorngold, Irving Berlin, Béla Bartók, and Kurt Weill will be highlighted during this free event. The finale of the summer concert series, Vienna, City of My Dreams, happens on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at The Spa Little Theater. Tickets range from $40 to $80 as members of Opera Saratoga’s acclaimed Young Artist Program will be featured in this evening of Viennese operetta favorites, including arias and ensembles by Oscar Strauss, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Franz von Suppé, Leo Fall and more. Edelson hopes Capital District residents will give opera a try, and experience one of the many Opera Saratoga events happening this summer. “There are as many different kinds of opera as there are movies – and we have something for everyone this summer,” Edelson said. He encourages newcomers to opera to choose the show with the story that sounds the most interesting to them. “Operas are really just stories told through song – great stories told through music, theater, dance and the wonderful visuals. It’s all encompassing! We have performers coming to Saratoga from around the world. The result is magical - and everyone can find a story in opera that will appeal to them!” For more information about the upcoming Opera Saratoga events please visit its website: http://www.operasaratoga.org/ Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Minimize Dust While Renovating

Even though dust is ever-present both inside and outside of a home, when renovations are in full swing, dusty conditions are often exacerbated. Whether a home is new or old, numerous substances can be stirred up when removing walls, refinishing floors, removing tile, or expanding living spaces. These include silica from drywall, lead, asbestos, paint particles, and even waste from bugs or rodents. Homeowners who want to remodel with minimal construction debris floating through the air — both for health purposes and general cleanliness — may find these proactive steps helpful. • Prepare dust-containment plans. If a contractor is involved, it is often his or her responsibility to minimize dust. Do-it-yourselfers must make dust containment a priority. Protecting the floor and keeping the dust confined only to work areas can be achieved with plastic sheeting and other barriers. • Designate an entrance and exit. The experts at This Old House say it is best to choose one doorway as the only means in and out of a work area. Ideally, this doorway should lead to the outdoors. All other doorways should be sealed on both sides. • Remove extraneous items. It’s best to remove clutter from the room, including any furniture that can be taken out of the space. This helps items from becoming dirty and hazardous particles from settling into nooks and crannies. • Close vents and registers. If forced air systems are part of the home, it’s best to divert air away from the work area. Block vents and intake registers so that dust does not clog the system or transfer to other rooms. • Cut items outside. Design advice site Houzz says that some power tools have vacuum extractors to suck up dust at the point of contact, removing 90 percent of dust where it is generated. For those who do not have access to these tools, cutting and sanding can be done outdoors to keep dust outside. • Open a window. If weather permits, an open window can provide ventilation. Another idea is to create an air vacuum in the work area. Picking a window at the far end of the work area and mounting a window fan blowing outward can suck dust out and away from other areas of the house. • Clean up daily. By keeping on top of dust, including sweeping and vacuuming the work area frequently, dust will not accumulate and migrate elsewhere.

When To Tackle Weeds In Your Lawn

Weeds are the bane of lawn and garden enthusiasts. Weeds can spread rapidly and overrun pristine grass, choking lawns and robbing them of their lush green look. In garden beds, weeds can steal water from thirsty plants, threatening their survival. A proactive approach that prevents weed growth is easier and less frustrating than dealing with weeds after they have sprouted. That means addressing weeds before they release seeds, and not waiting so long that the damage is already done. According to the home and landscape experts with This Old House, spraying herbicide for weeds in June and July can address weeds before seeds are set. Tilling and installing a new lawn in late August or the beginning of September can help the lawn establish itself before the first frosts arrive, all the while avoiding weed growth. The weed control experts at Roundup also suggest a springtime application of weed killer

Early treatment can prevent weed roots from spreading too far in the soil, which can reduce the chances that weed remnants will be left behind to grow at a later time. Homeowners with small lawns or gardens or those who prefer hand-weeding or using nonchemical ways to treat weeds must take steps to address the weeds early. Gardeners can try suffocating weeds by placing wood, blocks or plastic over them. Wet newspaper used as mulch can block weed formation and also clear patches of unwanted grass so that garden beds can be mapped out. Pouring boiling water on weeds or pulling them by hand is more effective when roots are young and have not yet spread. The UK-based company Lawnsmith also suggests a mid-spring weed killer application. This ensures that all weeds that have surfaced are addressed and that none are missed by weeding too early. The Idaho-based Town & Country Gardens suggests lawn and garden enthusiasts wait to tackle weeds. By waiting and applying weed treatments in the fall, when dandelions and other weeds are absorbing food and nutrients in larger quantities to survive winter, homeowners can rid their lawns and gardens of weeds efficiently. Weeds are a nuisance and an eyesore in lawns and gardens. Choosing the right time to treat them can ensure they don’t adversely affect lush landscapes and thriving gardens.

Choosing Materials For Decking

Warm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spending time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand outdoor living spaces, making them popular home additions. However, when it comes time to map out a deck building plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck material will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are among the most popular choices today, and the popularity of aluminum is growing steadily. Wood Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value.

Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gapfree, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material.

Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties. For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable. Various decking materials can meet the look, price point and maintenance level homeowners desire.

Rather than soil, all you may need for a hydroponic garden is water to grow a variety of healthy, strong plants. Although it seems like a futuristic concept, hydroponics — or growing plants without soil — actually dates back many centuries. The hanging Gardens of Babylon and The Floating Gardens of China are two of the earliest examples of hydroponics. According to Fullbloom Hydroponics, hydroponic gardening is a method of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution. Instead of soil, roots are supported by an inert material, such as pellets, perlite, or vermiculite. Some people use coconut fiber, sand or gravel as well. The key is that the substance not supply any additional nutrition to the plant. In some instances, the roots grow in water alone. Hydroponics works so well because the person doing the gardening can directly control the nutrients, oxygen and light according to what the plant needs. A nutrition-based water deliv-

This method of no-soil growth can be used just about anywhere. Although it has not yet edged out traditional farming methods, hydroponics is gaining popularity among entrepre- s neurs and hobbyists. An added attraction to hydroponics is its efficiency. The gardening e resource Maximum Yield says hydroponics is ideal where traditional farming is not an opa tion, such as in large cities where there is little to no access to agriculturally amenable land. Safety Renovations For Seniors’ Homes

Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women. Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger. As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times. The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer. Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year. In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors get stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping. Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary. A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits. Physical limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools. Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots. Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals. Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible. Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can seniors allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

Reduce Injuries During DIY Projects

Accomplishing a do-it-yourself home repair or renovation can elicit feelings of pride. DIY projects can be cost-effective and completed on homeowners’ unique time schedules. Although people can do many repairs themselves, using the wrong tools or equipment, or having insufficient knowledge of the task at hand can increase the risk of injury. The home security resource A Secure Life says that more than 18,000 Americans die every year from injuries that take place in the home. Unintentional injuries can be traced to many factors, but making repairs around the house can contribute to accident risk. Falls, electrical shocks, broken glass, carpentry tools, and carrying overly heavy loads repeatedly result in injury, says The Home Depot. Recognizing these potential hazards and always employing safe tactics can help keep DIYers stay healthy.

• Ladder safety: A fall from even a few feet can cause severe injuries and even death. Ladders should always be put on a level, stable surface. Individuals should not climb higher than the second rung on a step ladder or the third rung on an extension ladder. • Tools: Every tool has the potential to cause injury. This injury risk increases when tools are not used properly. Before a tool is used, it’s important to read the instructions. • Wear protective gloves. Gloves can help protect against burns, electrocution, slippery grip, and even deep cuts or finger amputation when using sharp tools. Gloves also are essential when handling broken glass. • Power tools: Power tools have momentum and torque behind them to make fast work of various jobs. If using power tools, DIYers should ensure they are the right tools for the job, not something that is handy or a quick fix. Power tools should only be used if a person can devote attention to the task and stay focused. That means never consuming alcohol, drugs or medications that can impair function when using power tools. • Working with electricity: An electric shock occurs when a person is exposed to

a source of electricity and the charge runs through the body. It can cause burns, cardiac arrest, changes to heartbeat, and even neurological injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. DIYers should take precautions anytime they are working with electricity, including turning off the supply of electricity to the outlet or fixture being worked on. • Heavy loads: It is important to exercise caution when moving around heavy loads. A friend or family member can help with the transfer of building materials or to relocate furniture. • Distractions: Avoiding distractions is essential when doing home renovations. Keep pets and children away from work areas to focus entirely on the job at hand.

Ways To Reduce Household Trash

Homeowners may feel like they’re always taking out the trash. Active families tend to generate a lot of garbage, and it’s not uncommon to find the kitchen trash pail overflowing each day. A report from SaveOnEnergy found that garbage production numbers are staggering. The average American produces 4.4 pounds of trash each day. That means the average family of four can generate 17.6 pounds of trash a day. Every year, Americans produce 254 million tons of trash. The Conference Board of Canada found Canadians produce more garbage per capita than any other country. Thanks to modern sanitation systems, which remove garbage in a timely manner, it’s difficult to get a good handle on just how much trash families generate. But one look at the statistics — and the size of landfills — clearly illustrates that garbage is a concern. Thankfully, there are ways to cut down on personal waste. • Recycle as much as you can. Post a list of all items that can be recycled where you live. Make sure to separate these items from the regular trash. Seek out facilities that will recycle items that are not collected in curbside pickup. • Avoid buying disposable products. Reusing items over and over saves money and resources. Many disposable products are packaged in plastic, which may be produced with toxic substances that can leach into the environment. • Use old rags for cleaning. When scouring the house, opt for old rags made from towels and T-shirts that are past their prime. These rags can be washed and reused again and again. • Mend broken items if possible. Before tossing something into the trash, figure out if it can be repaired. A simple fix may breathe a few more years of utility into the product. • Cook only what you can eat. The UN Environmental Program estimates that one-third of the food produced for human consumption across the globe is wasted. Store and use

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com leftovers efficiently. Stick to portion sizes when cooking, and find uses for foods (farms may take food scraps for pigs) before tossing them in the trash. • Compost usable items. Another way to repurpose certain food items is to turn them into fertilizer. Egg shells, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, and more can be placed in a compost heap instead of the garbage. • Donate used items. Books, magazines, toys, clothing, household items — all of these things can be donated or traded. • Use reusable tote bags when shopping. Keep plastic shopping bags out of landfills by recycling them or bringing along your own cloth bags to the stores. • Stop junk mail. Contact companies to remove your name from lists of junk mail. Invest in a shredder and turn junk mail into packing materials or bedding for pet cages. Reducing trash generated at home can greatly benefit the environment.

How To Control Common Spring Pests

Just when winter thaws out and people are anxious to enjoy the blooming flowers and luscious lawns of spring, pesky pests can appear and impact comfort levels and safety. Many pests resume their levels of activity as spring draws closer and temperatures warm up. The presence of these insects and rodents may cause problems in and around a home, which makes it essential to recognize them and avoid issues. The following are some of the more common spring pests and how to remedy infestations. Pavement ants Pavement ants are some of the most common pests residents encounter inside and outside of their homes. These ants are light brown to black with appendages that are lighter than the rest of their bodies. Small in stature, pavement ants have parallel lines on their heads and thorax, according to pest extermination company Orkin. Although pavement ants nest outdoors, they can enter homes through small crevices in search of food scraps. Their large colonies may not disappear until treatment is introduced. Keep foods in tightly sealed containers, clear counters and floors of crumbs, and address water sources, such as leaks. Pesticides may be needed in extreme conditions. Fleas Fleas are tiny, jumping, biting pests that must find a host upon which to live. As ectoparasites, they feed on blood while living on the body of living hosts. Pets can bring fleas inside the yard and home in warm weather. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, flea larvae develop more quickly at higher tempera-

tures. At normal room temperatures, the entire life cycle of a flea is about 18 days. Several flea control products are available to control fleas on cats and dogs. There also may be powders and sprays to alleviate flea infestations in the home. Vacuuming is also very effective in killing larvae in the carpet and at picking up adults. Wasps An errant wasp, hornet or yellow jacket may have survived winter and ridden out the colder temperatures within a home. Once the weather warms, queens will begin to look for places to lay eggs and establish colonies. Treating areas where wasps are seen entering and leaving the home is key. Seal holes as soon as possible. Although wasps help control other insect populations, their painful stings and potentially aggressive nature can make them challenging to have around a home. If a nest is found, hire a professional to remove it. Spiders Many spiders are not harmful enough to humans and pets to be much of a problem. In fact, spiders can be helpful to have around to control the populations of other insects. Still, many homeowners would prefer these web-slinging friends remain outdoors. Therefore, sealing cracks in a home’s foundation and repairing small openings around windows and doors can help keep spiders out. Also, alleviating moisture issues in basements, garages or attics may keep out other bugs that would be prey to spiders. Homeowners can take the steps necessary to cut down on pests in and around their homes.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

The DDR 3

These 3 were an unwanted litter of 9 week old Boxer mix puppies in Alabama who were brought to a high kill shelter once they could be taken from their Mother. Our rescue coordinator saw them at the shelter and knew she had to save them! She soon was able to place them in a foster home that took very good care of them and got them all prepared to head up North so that they could be adopted! They are certainly friendly, well socialized puppies that can’t wait to get a home!

Christian

Meet Christian!! He’s approximately 13 weeks old and he is in foster care with a family we have taken several dogs from! They do a great job in giving them much TLC and having them ready for transport! He is VERY very sweet, a Hound/Lab mix who is around 16 pounds! Christian is good with other animals, kids, and more, and he’s ready to be in his furever home! Can that be you??

Nori & Neva

These white, 11 week old Pittie mix sisters are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Unfortunately in the South if Pitbull puppies enter a high kill shelter, they are often put at the top of the list to be euthanized since Pitbulls are considered a “dangerous breed” due to all of the dogfighting that occurs in the South. We know the truth, that Pitties are the most loving gentle giants! They are incredibly sweet and we can’t wait for them to find a furever home

Books for Troops Clarification Needed

May 17, 2018

CAPITAL DISTRICT - In several articles that the Pennysaver has so diligently printed for us concerning the collection of books, there seems to be a huge misunderstanding of donating Hard-Covered books. The article clearly states that THE ONLY BOOKS THAT WE WILL ACCEPT IN HARD-COVER ARE BOOKS DEALING WITH HISTORY BECAUSE WE FIND HISTORY BOOKS ARE OFTEN HARD TO FIND IN SOFTCOVER. While we have received a great number of great history books in both soft and hard-covers, we have also been inundated with hundreds of hard-covered books and bestsellers that are not history and that are readily available in paperback. We don’t want them, the troops don’t want them. If you do donate hard-covered history books, do not donate coffee-table size books. They are a fortune to mail and the troops have limited space. With all other book donations, as in the past, we only accept soft-covered books in excellent condition. Please NO romances at all. We appreciate your generosity, but please consider the considerable extra energy and time these books entail which instead could be spent sending books that the troops want. Please be thoughtful before you donate. Thank you for those who make our jobs so much easier by donating only what we ask for. You are truly offering a gift of “escape. Ellen Keegan, Director.

Step 6 - Enjoy a weed free bed.

Over the years I’ve shared my method of using cardboard under mulch for weed control. Every year people will come up and thank me for saving them so much time once they tried it. Here it is, easy edging and mulching; a quick way to conquer weeds for great looking beds. I have an area that is difficult to mow around so I decided to turn it into a mulched bed to make mowing easier. I used the hose to outline the edge I want. It will be a nice rounded bed that will be easy to mow around. Then I finish edging the new bed. I use a straight bladed shovel for a nice neat edge. Simply slice into the grass at the edge of the bed at a steep angle 4” deep. Grass can’t cross that barrier of air so it won’t make it into the bed on the other side of the trench. I just toss the clumps I dig out into the bed...why waste good soil I say. “But what about all the grass and weeds in the bed...and all the clumps of grass you tossed in?” you’re asking. I suppose that I could spend a couple of hours digging out all the grass and weeds, but I have a much quicker and easier way to deal with that...cardboard! A layer of cardboard will smother the grass and it will die. All the clumps of sod that I tossed in will compost into the soil. I’m always on the prowl for large pieces of cardboard. Here’s the bed all covered with cardboard. I used a razor knife to slice the cardboard along the edge of the bed. Make sure that the cardboard overlaps heavily so the grass and weeds can’t get through...8” of overlap will stop them. I also used the razor knife to cut the cardboard so it fits around the trunks of the pines and hydrangea. Now all that’s left is putting mulch on the cardboard. This is the fun part, and it goes down quickly. I put a 4” to 5” layer of cedar mulch down. There are many types of mulch, but I like cedar because it’s cheap and smells nice too. Now the mulch is down, the area looks great and mowing will be simple. It looks a little sparse now but more plants can be added to the bed easily. Just brush the mulch aside, cut a hole in the cardboard and plant....easy peasy and it looks so much better now. In all, this took less than an hour, and I used 7 bags of cedar mulch. In the vegetable garden, I use the same method except that I’ll use straw on top of the cardboard instead of cedar mulch. During a wet year like this one, I’ll wait until later in the season to cover the soil to give it a chance to dry out and warm up. Seed beds and other areas can’t get covered and still need to be weeded but at least the aisles remain weed free. By fall earthworms will have eaten most of the cardboard and any that is left can be turned into the soil along with the straw adding organic matter and feeding the soil. Thanks for the read.
