HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer, NY is in their second year of their international student program. The school recently announced it will be bringing in even more students in the fall. So the school is looking for host families within a 30-minute radius of the school. Most of the current students plan to graduate from Doane Stuart and hopefully get into an American college or university. The schools have noted that being so far from home and doing something so important can be a lot of pressure on these students, and that a good host family can make all of the difference to these students. The students look to their hosts and peers to learn about American culture. For instance, many of the students who have never seen snow have taken an interest in snowboarding and also snow tubing. The students are from various parts of China and have very diverse interests. Some of the students have become very interested in basketball and play on the high school team and others have formed bonds based on a mutual appreciation of video games. The students have even created a Chinese Club at the school to teach American students about Chinese customs and traditions. To learn more about the program visit www. gphomestay.com or e-mail info@gphomestay.com

My name is Dexter. I am a sweet, gentle soul who wants a home of my own. I have had a somewhat tough, stressful life previous to coming to the shelter. I was found as a stray, and the folks around here think I’m about 7 years old. I do have alopecia, as you may notice, but I will probably get my coat back once I’m given a good stable home and healthy diet. Please visit with me and give me some chin rubs!

CALLING ALL MENTORS! CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffinsurance.com.

The public has become inOPEN: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm; Saturday 8am-Noon 664-7346 creasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker’s body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic. Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What’s more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off-gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car. The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk. Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. But those who continue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehicle, especially when children are present.

ATTENTION

Nancy Laribee, from Mohawk Hudson Humane Society with Brad Shear and Stefanie Goldstein

To celebrate the record-setting year for the "Empties for Animals" recycling program, the Society also presented a special award to the Goldstein Auto Group for their  program partnership, which began in 2011.  The "Empties for Animals" bottle and can recycling income was a little over $109,000 for 2013, an increase over  2012 total of  $99,000. In 2011, the program totaled close to $74,000. MHHS volunteers sort  the bottles and cans by distributor and  as a result, the Society receives 8 cents per can and bottle instead of the typical 5 cents.  The Goldstein Auto Group encourages people to drop bottle and can donations at each of their dealerships and their special "Empties for Animals" van delivers them to the Society and will even pick up large donations.  For every new Subaru purchased or leased from Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue in Albany, from November 21, 2013 and through January 2, 2014, Subaru of America donated $250.00 to the owner’s choice of participating charities.  Goldstein Subaru partnered with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for the annual year-end campaign and kicked-off the program on Saturday, November 23rd with a Share the Love Pet Adoption Event. The Society, located at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands, is open for adoptions seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 10AM to 6PM, Saturday from 10AM to 5PM and Sunday 1PM to 4PM.  In addition, cats are available for adoption at the Society’s satellite locations at the PetSmart stores in Glenmont and Latham as well as the Petco store in Clifton Park.
